One sunny Monday, I decided to go for a walk with my husband. I was wearing a special diamond (钻石) ring that day. It was my 20th birthday gift from my mother.
As we were walking in the park, I looked down at my hand and found the diamond on my
ring was missing. I was really worried, so I went back to look for it. I knew how small the chances were of finding it, but I still wanted to give it a try.
As I was fixing my eyes on the ground, I ran into an old gentleman by accident.
“What’s the matter?” he asked nicely.
“Sorry that I ran into you,” I said. “But I lost something. I’m really worried.”
I talked to him about the missing diamond and showed him the hole in my ring.
“That’s not going to be easy to find it,” he said. “Tell you what, love, I take a walk here every day. I’ll keep my eyes open for it.”
I thanked him, expecting nothing. A few days later, my husband and I met the old man again in the park.
“Guess what,” he said. “I found your diamond!”
I couldn’t believe what I saw when the gentleman handed the diamond back to me. Then my husband offered him money for his help, but he refused (拒绝) .
The old man could have easily kept the diamond or sold it, as it’s worth several thousand dollars. But he didn’t.
Now thanks to this man, I’ll spend more time trying to do something equally nice for other people. All I have to do is to look at my ring and remind myself that there are still kind and generous souls (心灵) out there.

42. What did the writer learn from this experience?
A. Believe someone will do what he says.
B. Keep an eye on her things.
C. Look at the ring all the time.
D. Do nice and kind things for others.

Getting around
A hundred years ago, it was quite difficult for anyone to travel far from where they lived. But fast, modern ways of getting around mean that people are doing much more travelling-so much, in fact, that transport (交通方式) is now the fastest-growing source of CO2 and air pollution (污染).
Planes are the most polluting kind of transport for each passenger (乘客) mile travelled, with cars the next worst polluters. Car fumes (废气) include a lot of dirt and gases other than CO2. These fumes cause even more deaths than traffic accidents. Scientists believe it isn’t even healthy inside a car.
Some governments are trying to make plane travel more expensive, so that people would choose other transports like trains. And they’re encouraging people to change the cars they drive by taxing (向……征税) big cars more than smaller ones. They can also improve public transport and make it easier for people to walk or cycle. Some cities now have trams (电车), which produce no fumes and little noise.
Here are some tips of what we should do:
➢Take the train, if you can. Trains use only about a third of energy of a plane for each mile travelled per passenger and cause only about a fifth of the pollution.
➢Buses and coaches do pollute, but because they carry lots of people at once, the amount of pollution per person will be much less than if everyone goes by car.
➢Cycling causes no pollution at all, and is good exercise. Don’t forget to ride on safe cycle routes.
➢If you have to go to school by car, see if you can have a shared school run with friends or neighbors so the car is full. Walking to school can be quicker than sitting in a traffic jam. And cars use more energy and cause more pollution in busy areas, because they are always stopping and starting.
43. Which transport pollutes the air most?
A. The car.
B. The plane.
C. The train.
D. The bus.
44. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. There is a lot of dirt in car fumes, but there is no CO2.
B. Cars create more pollution in busy areas and heavy traffic.
C. The bus creates less pollution when it carries a lot of people.
D. Governments should make people pay less tax when they buy cars.
45. The passage mainly talks about __________.
A. most transports using energy and causing pollution
B. trains, trams and bikes producing no pollution
C. the problems of modern transports and what we should do
D. the importance of taking better care of the environment
D
Think back to when you were in a classroom, maybe a maths classroom, and the teacher set a difficult problem. Which of the two following answers is closer to the way you reacted?
A: Oh no, this is too hard for me. I’m not even going to seriously try and work it out.
B: Ah, this is quite tricky but I like to push myself. Even if I don’t get the answer right, maybe I’ll learn something if I try.
Early in her career, the psychologist (心理学家) Carol Dweck of Stanford University gave a group of ten-year-olds problems that were a little too hard for them. One group reacted positively (积极正向地) , said they loved challenge and understood that their abilities could be developed. She says they had a ’growth mindset’and are focused on what they can achieve (成就) in the future. But another group of children felt that their intelligence(智力) was being judged and they had failed. They had a ’fixed mindset’and were unable to imagine improving. Some of these children said they might cheat in the future; others looked for someone who had done worse than them to increase their self-confidence.
Professor Dweck believes that there is a problem in education at the moment. For years, children have been praised for their intelligence or talent, but this makes them vulnerable to failure. They become performance-oriented (i.e. interested in the result), wanting to please by getting high grades, but they are not necessarily interested in learning for its own sake. The solution, according to Dweck, is to praise the process that children are involved in: making an effort, using learning strategies and improving. This way they will become mastery-oriented (i.e. interested in getting better at something) and will achieve more. She says that effort over time is the key to outstanding achievement.
Psychologists have been testing these theories. Students were taught that if they left their comfort zone and learned something new and difficult, the neurons (神经元) in their brains would form stronger connections, making them more intelligent. These students made faster progress than a control group. In another study, underperforming school children on a Native American reservation (保护区) were using growth mindset techniques for a year. The results were extremely successful. They came top in regional tests, beating children from much more advanced backgrounds. These children had felt that making an effort was a sign of stupidity in the past, but they came to see it as the key to learning.
So, back to our original question. If you answered B, well done-you already have a growth mindset. If A, don’t worry; everyone is able of becoming mastery-oriented with a little effort and self-awareness.
46. The students with a “growth mindset” will __________.
A. cheat in the future
B. like to take on challenges
C. get high grades to please others
D. look for someone who had done worse than them
47. What does the underlined sentence “this makes them vulnerable to failure” mean?
A. It’s easy for them to succeed.
B. It’s difficult for them to give up.
C. They’re proud of their talent.
D. They’re afraid of failure.
48. Which of the following statement is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Everyone will become mastery-oriented.
B. The key to learning is to make efforts over time.
C. Your brain will form stronger connections if you’re intelligent enough.
D. The test results of school children on a Native American reservation were worse than others.
49. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Do you have the right mindset?
B. What’s the growth mindset?
C. How to be a best learner?
D. What’s the key to success?

Up in the Sky
Take a trip up a hill on a windy day. What is flying high in the sky? It isn’t a bird or a plane. It is a kite!
Kids and adults like flying kites. Long ago, the first kites were made by Chinese people. Then, people around the world began flying kites.
One story tells a man’s hat got lifted off by wind. He had fun chasing (追赶)his hat, so he did it again! His hat became the first kite. Other stories tell that people liked watching leaves on windy days. They tied leaves to strings (线) and watched them fly.
Long ago, kites became important in keeping China protected. A man might be lifted up by a kite while he spied (监视) on an enemy. He could use the kite to fly high like a plane. He could also fight from the air!
Kites come in many shapes, sizes, and styles. They are usually made of cloth or paper. A kite might be shaped like a bird, a fish, or just a box. Kites are also painted with colors.
You can use a kite to catch fish. First you tie a fishing line to a kite. Then you put bait (鱼饵) on the line. You watch the kite with hopes as it flies over the water. When you pull the kite down, you might find a fish on your line! Some people think this is more fun than using a fishing pole (杆).
Many countries have special days to honor kites. People make, sell and fly many types of kites. There are several kite festivals in China. The Beijing International Kite Festival is usually held in April every year. People spend all days flying kites. You might see famous fighter kites. People fly these kites quite fast and try to cut other flyer’s lines.
There is much to learn about kites. Kites have many uses, such as spying, fighting and fishing. But the best way to use a kite is to fly it high for fun!

十二、阅读理解。
(共8分,每小题2分)
When Kentucky Fried Chicken announced several weeks ago that it would be introducing grilled chicken (烧鸡) , I’m ashamed to admit (承认) how excited I felt.
I became a Kentucky Fried fan back in the 1980s when I was a teen. But over the next 20 years I cut back for health reasons. Why, then, did I want KFC’s new, healthier product so badly?
For one thing, I wasn’t alone in my interest in the chicken. Thanks to Internet coupons (优惠券) for free meals, crowds went running to restaurants across the country. After accepting more than 10 million coupons, the chain (连锁店) had to stop the free food give-away. CEO Roger Eaton later apologized. But his “apology” was more a sign of celebration than regret. “Not in our wildest imagination could we believe the response we’ve gotten,” Eaton said.
After all, the whole point of the coupon was to draw attention to the new product.
But Eaton’s real aim, I think, was far more dangerous. Like every other fast food CEO, he faces a serious challenge in this age, in which consumers (消费者) pay too much attention to nutrition (营养) and health: how to get folks to eat food that is bad for them.
Companies have found ways to make money from consumer concerns (关注) over nutrition by introducing “healthy” menu.
A recent study of fast food eating habits showed that people who even consider a healthy menu feel they have a right to the high-fat item (菜品). This may be kept secret from public, but I think the fast food bosses have known about it for years. They understand how their customers think.
I tried KFC grilled chicken a few days ago. It is much healthier than the chain’s Original Recipe (配方). The problem is that when I was ordering my food, I felt I could go ahead and order some unhealthy food too. I allowed myself to order two sides, and in the end, my meal was more than 800 calories. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) considers 2,000 calories to be a normal daily amount.
KFC’s grilled chicken may go on to be a great success. But like every “healthy”menu offered by fast food chains, it’s a trick. KFC couldn’t care less whether you lose weight, as long as you keep making him money.
68. When the writer first heard about KFC’s new product—grilled chicken, how did he feel?
A. Ashamed.
B. Excited.
C. Hateful.
D. Surprised.
69. In the writer’s opinion, KFC aimed to __________ by providing Internet coupons for free meals.
A. make business run better
B. help us live more healthily
C. draw attention to the new product
D. change people’s view about fast food

A. you should always say no to high-fat food
B. you need to watch out for the calories you eat at each meal
C. the writer enjoyed grilled chicken a lot more than fried chicken
D. the writer felt like he had the right to buy high-fat food along with a healthier menu
