A new study shows that fat people in the United States suffer direct economic(经济)and social effects because of their size. The findings are from an 8-year study of about100,000 people. The people studied were between the ages of16 and 25 when the research began.

A small piece of fish each day may help keep the heart doctor away. That’s
the finding of a wide study of Dutchmen in which deaths from heart disease
were more than 50 percent lower among those who consumed at least an
ounce(盎司) of saltwater fish per day than those who never ate fish..
The Dutch research is one of the three human studies that give strong scientific backing to the longheld belief that eating fish can provide health benefits, particularly
to the heart.
Heart disease is the number-one killer in the US, with more than 550,000 deaths occurring from heart attacks each year. But researchers have previously noticed that
the incidence(发生率)of heart disease is lower in cultures that consume more fish than Americans do .There are fewer heart disease deaths, for example, among the Eskimos of Greenland, who consume about 14 ounces of fish a day, and among the Japanese,
whose daily fish consumption average more than 3 ounces.
For 20 years, the Dutch study followed 852 middle-aged men, 20 percent of whom
ate no fish. At the start of the study, the average fish consumption was about two-thirds
of an ounce each day with more men eating lean fish than fatty fish. During the next two decades,78 percent of men died from heart disease. The fewest deaths were among the group who regularly ate fish, even at levels far lower than those of the Japanese.
1..What is this passage mainly about?
A.The high incidence of heart disease in some counties.
B.The great changes in people’s diet.
C.The daily fish consumption of people in different cultures.
D.The effect of fish eating on people’s health.
2.According to the Dutch study, how many lives could probably be saved each year
in the US by eating fish?
A.852
B.110,000
C.275,000
D.550,000
3.Which of the following statement is TRUE according to the passage?
A.If you consume some saltwater fish per day, you won’t need a heart doctor
B.According to the Dutch research, eating fish gives no benefits to certain people
C.More than 550,000 people suffered from heart attacks each year in the US
D.Besides the Dutch research, another two human studies proved the health benefits
of eating fish
B
First, the good news: The Great Wall of China can, indeed, be seen from outer
space with the naked eye.
So education officials, who felt worried about changing the textbooks---which
have long held that the Great Wall and the dykes in the Netherlands are the only
man-made structure visible from space, can breathe easily again.
Yang Liwei, the nation’s first spaceman, disappointed a lot of Chinese when he
said he did not see the Wall during his orbit (轨道)of the less than 24 hours in October
2003,giving rise to calls for revisions to the textbooks.
But there is a rider: there are many, many structures which can also be seen, such as the Pyramids of Egypt, airports, highways—and even Beijing’s Third
Ring Road.
Apparently, it requires an atmospheric “perfect storm” in outer space, defined as an altitude(海拔)of about 350 kilometers. And you have to be in the right place, at the right time and under the right conditions to spot a particular structure.
Chinese-American astronaut Leroy Chiao, who has been on three space fights and is currently coming to the end of his six-month stint(期限)on the Joint US-Russian
Space Station, has provided the first photographic evidence of sections of the Great
Wall using commercially available equipment.
The reality of the photos has been proved by Professor Wei Chengjie of the Institute
of Remote Sensing Applications at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
According to Chiao, the chances of shooting the Great Wall area are “maybe once every few days and on ly during daylight every three months.”
4 Now the education officials “can breathe easily again” because______.
A.They overpraised the Great Wall
B.They needn’t change the textbooks
C.What Yang Liwei said was not true
D.They can revise the textbooks as wished
5.. The underlined word “rider” in the 4th paragraph possibly means “______”.
A.an added statement
B.an imagined conclusion
C. a person in a spaceship
D. a strange thing
6. One can get a chance to see the Great Wall from the space station______
A.within every few days
B.once every three months
C.only when it’s in daylight
D.only when it is sunny
7.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Textbooks : change or not
B.Yang Liwei﹠Leroy Chiao
cation officials needn’t worry
D.The Great Wall can be seen from outer space
