The victims were carried in one by one, their paws(爪子)and fur burnt, suffering from thirst and fear. Their caretakers bandaged their wounds, hugged them and laid them in baskets with the only thing that was familiar—the leaves of a eucalyptus tree (桉树)
As catastrophic fires have burned more than 2 million acres in Australia, dozens of koalas have been rescued from burning trees and grey ground.
“They are terrified," said Cheyne Flanagan, clinical director of the Koala Hospital in Port Macquarie, the only hospital of its kind in the world.
Koalas, unlike kangaroos, birds or snakes, do not flee from fires but instead climb trees to the top, where they can curl themselves into a ball for protection and wait for the danger to pass”
But during very serious fires, such as those that have burned in recent weeks, the animals, conservationists said, are far less likely to survive. Even if the fire itself does not reach the top of the tree, the animal may overheat and fall to the ground, where they can be burned to death.
The difficulty of the koala—a national symbol of Australia—has raised questions among conservationists and scientists about what it will take to preserve biodiversity in a country where there is more serious fire, extreme heat and lack of water.
While koalas have to get used to existing alongside wildfires, the animals are facing new danger not just from climate change but also from human activities, which has disturbed local populations, weakening their ability to survive fires.
“We have these unique animals not found anywhere else on this planet, and w e're killing them.” Flanagan said. "This is a big wake-up call.”
24. What will koalas do when facing the wildfire?
A. Flee to other places.
B. Hide under the ground.
C. Climb to the top of the tree.
D. Wait -for the rescue to come.
25. Besides wildfire, wh at else threatens koalas’ existence?
A.More human activities.
B. Less water to drink.
C. Bigger local population.
D. Weaker ability to climb. 26. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. Koalas' living habits should be studied more carefully. B. More measures should be taken for koalas' protection. C. Wake-up calls should be made when wildfire happens. D. Killing unique animals should be banned in a strict way. 27. What does the passage mainly talk about? A. Looking for unique animals in Australia. B. Protecting Australia's animals who cannot climb. C. Facing new threats which cause koalas' deaths. D. Saving the fire victims : Australia's koalas. 24. Half of the world's beaches could disappear by 2100, a study published in the journal Nature Climate Change suggests.
Michalis Vousdoukas, of the European Union's Joint Research Center in Ispra, Italy, was the lead researchist. "Tourist areas which have sandy beaches as their main selling point will probably face strong consequences," he said. Aside from economic value, beaches play an important
environmental role. "Sandy beaches are important habitats supporting a wide range of species. They also protect the coast from the effects of storms, so without sandy beaches other inland environments can be affected by the effects of waves and saltwater entering," Vousdoukas added.
The main causes are rising sea-level and erosion (侵蚀)from storms, the study says, which warned of the near-disappearance of almost half of the world's sandy beaches by the end of the century. Beaches in the United States will be “greatly affected”,as will shorelines in Canada, Mexico, China and Chile. In the U. S. , beaches along the East Coast and the Gulf Coast will experience the most erosion.
Michalis V ousdoukas and other researchers used satellite images to track the way beaches have changed over the past 30 years and patterned how global warming might affect them in the future. They found that West Africa will see some of the worst losses, where more than 60% of sandy coastline may be lost in countries such as The Gambia and Guinea-Bissau. Australia will also take a hit:when the total length of sandy beach projected to be lost is analyzed, Australia would be hit the hardest, with more than 7,000 miles at risk.
28. What mainly caused the disappearance of half of the world's beaches?
A. Over population and more tourism.
B. Severe erosion and coastline losses.
C. Global warming and climate change.
D. Sea-level rise and storm destruction.
29. Which country possibly loses more than half of sandy coastline according to the study?
A. Chile.
B. The Gambia.
C. Australia.
D. The United States.
30. Why are beaches important to wildlife?
A. They can provide habitats for species.
B. They can block out waves and storms.
C. They can be popular tourist attractions.
D. They can stop erosion from happening.
31. What is the author's purpose in writing this text?
A. To introduce beaches.
B. To make a comparison.
C. To protect environment.
D. To explain a study.

When he was two years old, Ben stopped seeing out of his left eye. His mother took him to the doctor and soon discovered he had cancer in both eyes. After possible treatments failed, doctors removed both his eyes. For Ben, vision was gone forever.
But by the time he was seven years old, he had developed a technique for feeling the world around him: he clicked with his mouth and listened for the returning echoes. This method enabled
Ben to determine the locations of open doorways, people, parked cars, garbage cans, and so on. He was echolocating: bouncing his sound waves off objects in the environment and catching the reflections to build a mental model of his surroundings.
Echolocation may sound like an improbable feat for a human, but thousands of blind people have perfected this skill, just like Ben did. The event has been written about since at least the 1940s, when the word ''echolocation" was first invented in a science article titled “Echolocation by Blind Me n , Bats, and Radar.”
How could blindness give rise to the amazing ability to understand the surroundings with one's ears? The answer lies in a gift on the brain; huge adaptability.
Mother Nature filled our brains with flexibility to adapt to circumstances. Just as sharp teeth and fast legs are useful for survival, so is the brain's ability to reset, which allows for learning, memory, and die ability to develop new skills.
In Ben's case, his brain's flexible wiring repurposed his visual cortex for processing sound. As a result, Ben had more neurons available to deal with listening information, and this increased processing power allowed Ben to interpret soundwaves in shocking detail. Ben's super-hearing proves a more general rule: the more brain area a particular sense has, the better it performs.
32. How did Ben “see” after he had his eyes removed?
A. By using a walking stick.
B. By asking others for help.
C. By inventing a new system.
D. By echolocating surroundings.
33. What does the underlined word “feat” in Paragraph 3 probabl y mean?
A. Skill.
B. Task.
C. Sense.
D. Invention.
34. What can we learn from Ben's case?
A. He laughs best who laughs last.
B. Actions speak louder than words.
C. God shuts one door but he opens another.
D. Man becomes learned by asking questions.
35. In which column of a magazine can we read this passage?
A. Culture Shock.
B. Human Biology.
C. Scientific Technology.
D. Environmental Protection.

根据第二段中“But by the time he was seven years old, he had developed a technique for feeling the world around him: he clicked with his mouth and listened for the returning echoes.(但在他七岁的时候,他已经发展出了一种感受周围世界的技术:他用嘴发出咔哒咔哒的声音,听着声音的回音)”可知,Ben的眼睛被摘除后,他通过回声定位周围环境。
根据画线词后文“but thousands of blind people have perfected this skill, just like Ben did”可知,回声定位对人类来说可能听起来是一项不太可能的技能,但成千上万的盲人已经完善了这项技能,就像Ben一样。
A. Skill.技能;
B. Task.任务;
C. Sense.感觉;
D. Invention.发明。
故选A。
根据第一段的“For Ben, vision was gone forever”(对于Ben来说视觉永远失去了)和最后一段中“In Ben's case, his brain's flexible wiring repurposed his visual cortex for processing sound. As a result, Ben had more neurons available to deal with listening information, and this increased processing power allowed Ben to interpret soundwaves in shocking detail.(在Ben的例子中,他大脑的灵活线路改变了他的视觉皮层处理声音的功能。

空格前“we hear fitness influencers say that 30 minutes of exercise each day is all you need to get healthy and achieve your dream physique(体质).( 我们听到有影响力的健身者说,每天30分钟的锻炼是你所需要的一切来保持健康和实现你的梦想体型)”与空格后“Lots of factors (因素)contribute to someone's overall health, and the most important one has nothing to do with exercise. ( 有很多因素影响一个人的整体健康,而最重要的一个因素与锻炼无关)”在句意上是明显的转折关系,故空格处应是一个表达转折过渡的句子,结合选项可知选项B. Sadly, this advice isn't entirely true.( 遗憾的是,这个建议并不完全正确。
)与上述分析一致,“Sadly”一词体现了下文句意的转折。
故选B。
【37题详解】
空格前“I played sports from middle school all the way through college.( 我从中学一直到大学都参加体育运动。
)”可知作者一直坚持运动,但空格后的“However, I didn't truly get healthy until college because my diet in high school was filled with processed food and sugar in the form of cereal, brownies, cookies, candy bars, and much. more.( 然而,我直到大学才真正变得健康,因为我在高中的饮食充满了加工食品和糖,比如麦片、布朗尼、饼干、糖果等等很多。
A. I exercised over 30 minutes a day.( 我每天锻炼30分钟以上。
故选A。
空格处是一个小标题,故空格处是下述段落的总括,根据空格后的段落首句“We've all been told that a prolonged sitting lifestyle can negatively (否定地)affect your health.( 我们都知道,久坐的生活方式会对你的健康产生负面影响。
E. Prolonged sitting has been proven dangerous.( 长期坐着已经被证明是危险的。
根据小标题“It will give your heart a promotion.( 它会提升你的心脏)可知空格处与“提升心脏功能”话题一致。
F. One of the deadliest killers in the world is heart disease.( 心脏病是世界上最致命的杀手之一。
)”中的“heart disease”与本段小标题中的“give your heart a promotion”相对应且话题一致。
故选F。
空格前文“People often worry that if they exercise in the morning, they will wear themselves out for the day ahead.( 人们经常担心,如果他们在早上锻炼,他们会在接下来的一天疲惫不堪。
)”与空格下文“When I get a 30-minute sweat session done in the morning, I feel accomplished and energized for the day ahead.( 早上出30分钟汗后,我就会觉得很有成就感,充满活力。
C. I have actually found the opposite true.( 我发现事实恰恰相反。
