Lingling:Did you likethe zoo?
玲玲：你以前喜欢动物园吗？
Sally:Yes! I was soexcited to see thepandas ... at last!

Lingling:But it's sad tothink about all thoseanimals in danger.It makes me mad!

Sally:The surprisingthing was to hear howmany animals are indanger. We need toprotect them better.
萨利：听到有多少动物身处险境是令人惊讶的事情。

Lingling:And it justisn't right to killwhales or elephantsfor their meat.

Sally:Absolutely,but it's hard to stopthe killing.

Lingling:And manyanimals have no placeto live in.

Our villages and farmsare growing bigger,and we're taking awaytheir lands and forests.

Sally:Also, often their water isn't good to drink because we've made it dirty.

Lingling:It's reallyawful! We need to helpthe animals live inpeace.

But many people decidenot to think about it.What on earth can we do?

Unit 2 The government isworking hard to save thepanda.

1. The panda is one ofthe animals most indanger. There are about1,000 pandas living innature reserves today.
1.熊猫是最濒临灭绝危险的动物中的一种，现在的自然保护区大约生活着1,000只大熊猫。

Zoos and researchcentres look after about160 pandas.
动物园和保护中心照料的熊猫大约有160只。

2 Pandas live in theforests and mountains ofSouthwest China.

They mainly live onbamboo, and each pandaneeds to eat a lot ofbamboo every day.
他们主要吃竹子为生，每只熊猫每天需要吃很多的竹子。

The area of bamboo isbecoming smaller formany different reasons,so pandas have less andless land to live on.
由于许多不同的原因，竹子的生长的范围变得更小了，所以能供熊猫生存的土地也越来越少了。

Pandas don't have manybabies, and baby pandasoften die. The situationis becoming veryserious.
熊猫产崽率底，小熊猫又经常死亡。

这种情形变得非常严重。

3 Our government isworking hard to savepandas.
为了挽救熊猫，我们的政府正在努力工作。

There are more than 30nature reserves toprotect pandas but theseare not enough.
有30多个用来保护熊猫的自然保护区，但这些还不够。

The government has madea new plan to helppandas.
政府已经制定了一项保护熊猫的新计划。

The nature reserves willbe bigger and the bamboowill grow better.
自然保护区将会更大，竹子会长得更好。

Then the pandas willhave enough food to eatand enough places tolive in.
熊猫将有足够的食物吃，有足够的空间生存。

Pandas born in the zoosmay go back to live inthe nature reserves.
出生在动物园的熊猫也可能回到自然保护区生活。

4 Most people lovepandas. The panda is oneof the best-knownanimals in the world.
4 大部分人喜欢熊猫。

熊猫是世界上最闻名的动物之一。

It is the symbol for theWorld Wide Fund forNature.
它是世界野生动物基金会的象征。

The WWF works to protectall animals in danger,so the panda has becomethe symbol of allanimals in danger.
世界野生动物基金会为保护所有的濒危动物而工作。

There is still a longway to go to save thepanda.
要挽救大熊猫，仍然还有很长的路要走。

Think of other animalsin danger such astigers, whales, turtlesand elephants－we needto save the panda,
考虑到其它的濒危动物比如老虎，鲸，海龟和大象－我们需要保护熊猫，
and we need to savethem, too.
我们也需要挽救它们。
