Honesty of American students
When I first arrived in America,I was surprised by the honesty of my classmates.Over my first month at school,I didn’t see or hear anyone cheating.I found two reasons for this.
First,if any student cheats,he or she will get punished. My school has a rule called the Honor Code.It asks students not to steal, lie or cheat. If someone goes against the code,he or she will have to leave the school.During my first year in the school, seven students left the school because of cheating.
Second,American students don’t care about scores as much as Chinese students do.They know that colleges will look at their all-round abilities instead of only scores. So they have fewer reasons to cheat.
1. The writer didn’t see or hear anyone cheating when she first arrived in America, did she?
2. What is the Honor Code about?
3. What will happen if students go against the code?

Two years ago, a small town in Changhua started to grow healthy rice. The healthy rice was not grown by farmers but by the students from a small primary school of only about fifty people.
The idea of growing rice came from the school teachers. When making teaching plans, the teachers decided to teach students how to grow healthy rice on school land. They wanted the students to get closer to the land when doing the rice farming outside the classroom.
What’s better, the school made money from selling the ri ce and giving farming classes to the public. With the money, the school could help the students who wished to go to foreign countries some day. Today the dream is becoming real — the students are flying to Japan to share their special farming experiences, and have fun over there, of course! “We all feel very proud that even students from a small town can make themselves seen in the world,” said one of the teachers.

Father told us that be wouldn’t let the neighbor’s rice rot(糜烂) in the field. He decided to harvest i t by hand without a machine. “If tonight’s weather is clear, I think I can do it.” added my father. In fact, he was rather tired after a day’s harvest work.
After dinner, Father had a short rest and made his way to the field. A full moon was glowing (发光) in the sky and the weather was cold but clear. He spent the whole night keeping his word.
I would never forget the image(画面):Father was cutting rice in the light of the harvest moon. Behi nd him, row after row of rice stocks(秸秆) stood at attention, showing respect for a man who kept his w ord.

【解析】根据题干中“return to work”可以定位到文中第二段第三行What’s worse, he had to return to work the next day because his partner was ill in hospital.得出答案。

4. How did Father help the neighbor harvest rice in the field?
【答案】By hand without a machine.
【解析】根据题干“help the neighbor harvest rice”定位到倒数第三段第二句“He decided to harvest it by ha nd without a machine.”需要注意的是题干中的问句是用how来提问表示用某种方式,因此直接用by回答。

Black Friday
Thanksgiving is always on a Thursday. The day after it has been known as Black Friday. It is the start of the holiday shopping season, and it has been the busiest shopping day of the year in the US since 2005.
Most stores offer big sales on Black Friday. They open their doors quite early in the morning. They try to attract shoppers with big discounts (打折). Some items (商品)like TVs and cloths are much cheaper than usual. Stores may even lose money on these items. They hope that shoppers will buy gifts for other people while they are in the store.
Black Friday is a great time to go shopping. However, there are problem. The biggest one is that there are not enough low-priced items. Each store may only have a few. These items are in great need, so people stand in long lines to get them. They may wait three to four hours before a store opens. They may be hoping to get a low price on a TV or computer, but not everybody can get one. Some people leave, disappointed.
The situation makes people worried. Some Black Friday events have been crazy. There have been fights over toys among shoppers. Some workers have even been hurt by large crowds. But most Black Friday events are safe and fun. Still, if you plan to go, you will expect large crowds and a bit of pushing.
So where does the name “Black Friday” come from? It was first used in Philadelphia in the 1950s. The police called this day Black Friday because of the heavy traffic it caused. In the 1960s, stores tried to rename the day “Big Friday”. It did not stick. The name “Black Friday” continued to spread across the country. It seems that it is here to stay.
Now people all over the country take part in Black Friday events. It is even spreading to other
parts of the world. Stores have held Black Friday events in the UK, Australia, and Brazil since 2012. In Mexico, stores offer a weekend of discounts every year. They call it “El Buen Fin”, which means “the good weekend” in Spani sh. I guess people everywhere like to buy things on sale.
1. Is Black Friday the start of the holiday shopping season?
2. What is the biggest problem with Black Friday?
3. How long may people have to wait before a store opens?
4. Where was the name “Black Friday” first used in the 1950s?
5. Why do people like going shopping on Black Friday?

Red squirrels used to be a common sight in British forests and
countryside. But there are fewer than 140,000 red squirrels left now and most of them are in Scotland. However, grey squirrels (introduced from North America) are now so common that many people dislike them. They can be legally(合法的)trapped and destroyed.
On first sight, the two types of squirrel are similar. They both have a long tail, which helps the squirrel to balance when jumping from tree to tree, and the same large eyes, small ears and powerful back legs. However, the grey squirrel has a clear physical advantage over the red. The red squirrel has a head-and-body length of 19 to 23 centimeters, a tail length of 15 to 20 centimeters and a body weight of 250 to 340 grams. Compared to this, the grey squirrel is a larger animal. The head and body measures between 23 and 30 centimeters long and the tail is between 19 and 25 centimeters long. Adult grey squirrels are heavier, weighing between 400 and 600 grams. This size allows them to store more fat and helps them to survive a hard winter, which would be fatal(致命的)to their smaller cousins .
So why are red squirrels losing out in competition with grey squirrels? Size is one factor, but there are others. Red squirrels live high up in trees, while grey squirrels spend more of their time on the ground. This means any loss of forests greatly influences the red squirrel population. Another reason for the grey squirrel’s success is its ability to use food provided by people. Like the fox, the grey squirrel can survive in towns and cities. The other problem for the red squirrel is disease. Both squirrels carry a certain virus. While this doesn’t seem to attack grey squirrels, it is fatal to red squirrels.
1.Which are introduced from North America, red squirrels or grey squirrels?
2.What helps the squirrel to balance when jumping from tree to tree?
3.How much do adult grey squirrels weigh at most?
4.Who are the “smaller cousins” mentioned in the second paragraph?
5.There are four reasons why red squirrels are losing out in competition with grey squirrels.
Please list TWO of them.(每条不得超过4个单词)

It seems that everybody tells lies—well, not big lies, but what we call“white lies”.Telling“white lies”isn’t really that bad. Most of the time, people do it because they want to protect a friendship.A survey shows that each person 1ies about seven times a day.The only real questions are about when we lie and who we tell lies to.Here are some reasons why people tell“white lies".
◆Lying to hide something:People often lie because they want to hide something from someone. For example,Paul doesn’t tell his parents that he’s going to play basketball because he doesn’t think they will agree. He tells a lie that he is going to the 1ibrary to study.
◆Lying to make someone feel good:Often we don’t tell the truth to make someone feel good. For example, your friend cooks dinner for you,but it tastes terrible.Do you say so? No!You probably say,“Mmm,this is delicious!"
◆Giving false(错误的)excuses:Sometimes people lie because they don’t want to do something. For example, someone invites you to a party. You think it will be boring,So you say you’re busy.
◆Lying to hide bad news:Sometimes we don’t want to tell someone bad news. For example, you have just had a very bad day at work, but you don’t feel like talking about it.
So if someone asks you about your day,you just say everything was fine.
