Four students at the University of Hefei, in eastern China, recently proved that you don’t have to spend a small fortune on a designer dress to look amazing. You can make it yourself, for free, using only plant leaves. Photos of the amazing leaf dress have been doing the rounds on Chinese social media for about a week, and people still can’t stop praising them.
The team behind the unique dress — two girls and two boys — got the idea for it over six months ago, while trying to come up with an interesting project for the annual “Animal and Plant Specimen Contest” at the University of Hefei. During that time, the girls couldn’t stop talking about how gorgeous the dress worn by Chinese actress at the Cannes Festival looked, and one of them suggested they try to recreate it out of plant leaves. They ran the idea by their teacher, and even though he considered it difficult to pull off, they went with it anyway.
After researching the best way to use plant leaves as fabric(织物), and coming up with a design for their dress, the four students started collecting the leaves. Some species were readily available on campus, but others were not, so they had to travel to Tianzhu Mountain to collect them.
To ensure that the collected leaves didn’t rot, the students removed the flesh (叶肉) by boiling them in specially prepared mixtures for about two hours. This made the flesh easier peeled away, leaving only the “skeleton” of the leaf.
This was much harder than it sounds, as the four students struggled to get the proper amount of the mixtures and the boiling time just right, to ensure that the flesh could be easily removed without damaging the skeleton of the leaf. Through trial and error, and with their teacher’s guidance they were able to come up with a perfect formula(配方).
The four science and biotechnology students could only work on their special dress after classes and on weekends, so it took them nearly four months to complete. That’s a pretty long time, but it all paid off when one of the girls got to finally put on the leaf dress and show it off to everyone. They posted photos of it, at various stages, online, and it became popular almost instantly.
24.What can be inferred from the first paragraph about the leaf dress?
A.It was highly spoken of.B.It was sold at a high price.

C.From people online.D.From “Animal and Plant Specimen
Contest”.
26.How was the process of making the dress?
A.Hard but rewarding.B.Complex and painful.
C.Smooth and successful.D.Easy but time-consuming.
27.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.What can dresses be made of?
B.A perfect formula for dresses
C.A dress made of leaves got popular
D.Four university students’ road to success
When I was a teenager, I had a love for buying vinyl LPs (黑胶唱片). I saved money from my part-time jobs and spent hours in record stores for many years. Thus, I kept a large collection of records.
In my high school days, when the days of record stores were over, my friend Beaner, my brother and I would visit pawnshops and other possible places to see if there were any albums (唱片), doing what is called record digging.
Record digging means spending hours searching through warehouses, church basements and yard sales. When you’re digging for records, you’re surrounded by music you don’t know. Therefore, you imagine the thousands of artists who were destined to be legends but for various reasons, were just ignored. Many of these records only exist in a handful of copies. Some have never even been found or heard.
Once a friend told me about a band called Black Citron from Switzerland in the late 80s, and then I started looking out for their albums. And then a couple of months later, I managed to score a copy. It was really love at first sight when I put the needle on. Now I am still wondering who were in this band and what their names were.
I assume most people who go digging for records hope that they’re going to find something, pay two dollars for it, and then turn around and sell it for $ 100. But I want to connect with the artist, if the artist is still alive, and to find out more about the context. When
I hold a record in my hands, I can kind of have a feeling of who were the people behind it. 28.What did the author, his friend and his brother look for together?
A.Old music albums.
B.Part-time job opportunities.
C.Second-hand goods for daily use.
D.Recorded information of legend bands.
29.What can be learned from paragraph 3?
A.What record digging is like.
B.Why many artists are ignored.
C.Where the author usually played.
D.How one’s imagination is inspired.
30.What does the underlined word “score“ in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Produce.B.Sell.C.Print.D.Obtain. 31.What does the author think of record digging?
A.It’s confusing.
B.It satisfies his curiosity.
C.It’s a means to make money.
D.It gives him inspiration about life.
I don’t remember when my love of the protected Great Bear Rainforest began — it’s something that’s always been there, even though I haven’t spent longer than a month there in one go. I grew up in a small village by the sea and planned to study marine biology and live
in my writing.
The Great Bear Rainforest is vast, splendid and wild but also friendly, fun and diverse. I travelled there by myself at the age of 20, planning to spend my 21st birthday camping, and hiking in the forests.
I woke up on my birthday in a tent on the edge of the water. Behind me, the trees of this largely untouched wilderness emerged. Endless carpets of pointed trees reached right down to a thin rocky shore. It seemed there was no way in. This wilderness held its secrets close. Stepping from the beach into the forest, I immediately sensed the history of the area — it felt
ancient, and it was impossible not to be humbled.
With a guide for safety, I hiked a few miles through the wilderness. The sounds of the forest were everywhere. Birds sang. Insects buzzed. Something bigger moved through the undergrowth and my guide stopped dead. Listened. My heart was in my mouth. Then, after some invisible signal, my guide relaxed, and we went on.
We continued the hike and emerged onto a cliff with the most breath-taking view I’ve ever seen. From terror to wonder in only a few hundred steps. It was that sense of unsettled ground — of shifting emotion, secrets and awe, beauty and fear — that’s fed my writing across four books, none more so than Children of the Sun, and implanted in me a lifelong love of the wild.
32.What does the underlined phrase “put paid to” in paragraph 1 mean?
A.Stimulated.B.Ended.C.Supported.D.Proved. 33.What does “it was impossible not to be humbled” convey in paragraph 3?
A.I was awed by the powerful nature.B.I became modest after my 21st birthday.
C.I was attracted by the history of the area.D.I got curious about the secrets of the forest.
34.Which word can best describe the guide?
A.Conservative.B.Considerate.C.Practiced.D.Indecisive. 35.What is the text mainly about?
A.The passion for nature.B.The feature of 4 books.
C.An unforgettable travel experience.D.A vivid description of mixed emotions.
How to lower costs and improve the living quality?
There are numerous products posted on social media, and you might believe an electric toothbrush, Luna facial cleaning massager, a flight ticket to Phuket and so on will bring you a better life. But for many graduates or those who have worked for only one or two years, your income cannot keep pace with expense. 36 Here’s how:
Keep running or doing yoga
It seems to be a challenge to afford a fitness center costing over 10,000 yuan in annual fees or for a personal trainer. But you can buy a pair of sneakers or a yoga mat instead. Running in a park regularly or doing yoga at home using free online resources is definitely a type of quality life. 37 .
Go to museums or libraries
Chasing young good-looking stars, watching their films and buying expensive tickets for their concerts are popular with many young people. 38 You seem to fail to take into account a variety of exhibitions and resources updated frequently in major cities. Why not have a try? What you need to do is to choose themes that you are interested in, make an online appointment in advance and then enjoy your weekend.
39
For some young people, the easy and instant access and the discount codes of online shopping make it an addictive draw. Sometimes what you buy online is not what you really need and the demands are created by the producers. For example, many buy new clothing and they don’t wear.
40 Money is not the only thing that can drive your quality of living, but your optimistic attitude towards life and self-disciplined way of life are.
A.Stop over-spending online
B.Limit your shopping spending
C.So, how can we save some money and improve quality of life?
D.Making money and saving money are not the final goal of life.
E.To live a quality life requires more self-discipline than money.
F.However, this would do little to enrich your spiritual life and add to economic burdens.
G.Exercise is more rewarding than holding a membership card at an expensive fitness club.
