In a recent email to an old friend, I mentioned that our family planned on taking our four-week road trip in our motor home. My friend emailed back and said he thought I was very “brave” to set out on such an adventure with two young children (aged two and five). I laughed when I read his email and wondered if he knew how much he was missing out on by giving up the idea of such a fun RV trip(房车旅)with oneˈs family.
My husband and I have been “RVing” for over ten years. When we first started traveling, we certainly had some troubles that were not so funny at the time but seem to be funny now. We forgot our pillows and failed to cook dinner on an outdoor grill(烤架)for lack of a flashlight. Then we decided to make our dinner in the motor home but could not get the oven lit! So we went to bed a little hungrier than we had planned!
However, thatˈs nothing compared with the amazing geological and natural wonders we experienced during our RV trips. In addition, we have discovered a new world of family fun and family bonding. We saw the Grand Canyon when our son was only six months old. We play games inside and out, walk together, talk together, read, solve puzzles, and enjoy music and movies. We have got used to doing things with one another. Our kids love to pick out good, old-fashioned postcards to send off via “snail mail” to different family members on every trip.
As our world gets more and more overloaded with cell phones, texting, emails and video games, our family sticks more and more tightly to the wonderfully simple idea of unplugging (拔掉插头)for a while and jumping into the seat to take a trip in our motor home. Then we come home with fun pictures of our wanderings, and weˈre able to build special memories for our kids. Now we want to spread the word and tell families of all kinds what enjoyment can be had from packing the family up for a trip in the RV.
4.What did the authorˈs friend think of her travel plan?
A.A family trip should not last four weeks.
B.It was wise of her to take children on RV trips.

A.They learnt how to solve problems.
B.They fell in love with adventure travels.
C.They began to have affection for nature.
D.They developed a closer family relationship.
7.What is the authorˈs purpose in writing the text?
A.To urge families to take RV trips together.
B.To show how to make RV trips interesting.
C.To encourage kids to take part in RV trips.
D.To share an unforgettable traveling experience.
Jeremiah Letting learned about coffee from his father. As a child in the late 1980s, he worked on his family’s coffee farm in the hills of Nandi county, western Kenya. The cycle ran like clockwork: cultivate, plant, ripen, harvest and sell. “Every year was the same,” he says. “It was timely.” No longer. As the chairman of a cooperative, he now represents 303 smallholder coffee farmers who are suffering from droughts, unpredictable rains and rising temperatures that bring pests and disease.
Some of the world’s best Coffea arabica is grown on the rich slopes(山坡) of Mount
Kenya. This variety of the plant produces beans that are tastier and more valuable than those from its poor cousin, Coffea canephora, which often ends up in instant coffee granules(颗粒).
Arabica plants grow at altitudes(海拔) of 1,000-2,000 meters in equatorial regions and at temperatures between 18℃ and 21℃. However, over the past 60 years average temperatures in some of Kenya’s coffee regions have already risen by 1.1°C, reaching daytime highs of 25℃. Global warming may reduce the total area that is most suited to growing arabica beans by about half by 2050, according to a recent paper.
Rising temperatures may make some new places suitable for growing coffee, because they will raise the maximum altitude at which the crop can be grown, but such spots are relatively small and generally given over to other crops already such as tea, Kenya’s biggest export that supports about 10% of Kenya’s population.
Although coffee is only Kenya’s fourth largest export, it provides a lifeline in the countryside. The industry directly or indirectly provides an income for about 6m people, according to data from the Kenyan government. Now, many farmers barely scrape by(勉强生活) as it is.
Kenya’s Coffee Research Institute is trying to find ways to help farmers adapt, such as encouraging them to plant trees to shade their coffee bushes, or to change to growing more resilient(适应能力强的) coffee plants. Another option may be entirely new varieties. Researchers are investigating a wild type of coffee called Coffea stenophylla, which is delicious and can also take the heat. But it produces lower yields(产量) than existing commercial varieties and it may be years before it is widely grown.
8.What can we learn from Jeremiah Letting’s example?
A.He has a passion for coffee.
B.The coffee farming is in bad shape.
C.Coffee sales are declining year by year.
D.He devoted his life to the local coffee industry.
9.How do overheating coffee bushes threaten the tea crop?
A.By occupying tea-growing areas.
B.By driving down the price of tea.
C.By capturing the export market for tea.
D.By shifting the locals’ attention from tea to coffee.
10.What might solve the problem of coffee?
A.Promoting the growth of Coffee canephora.
B.Improving the taste of other varieties of coffee.
C.Enhancing the resilience of current coffee plants.
D.Giving the coffee plants shade by planting trees.
11.What is the best title for the text?
A.The global coffee industry is facing a serious crisis
B.Climate change will hurt coffee growth in Kenya
C.Farmers in Africa are deeply affected by climate change
D.The Kenya’s government is promoting the coffee industry
Based on a trial of a 35-hour workweek without a drop in pay among 2,500 workers in Iceland, the report, conducted by Autonomy, and the Association for Sustainability and Democracy, found that negative marker (标志) like burnout, stress, necessary overtime, and disconnection with friends and family all went down, but that productivity often improved in those shorter working hours.
The principal theory is that “burnout” damages the ability of workers to be productive. The lack of production will occasionally necessitate overtime, especially by managers, further increasing burnout and decreasing productivity. In those who cannot afford to be less productive, like nurses for example, burnout simply results in negative health outcomes.
Hoping to see if they could copy the productivity gains in other countries, the Reykjavik City Council launched this trial, mostly at public offices, but also in private firms, to measure performance and worker well-being for four years.
Compared with firms or offices that werenˈt involved in the trial, productivity was improved in those participating, but it wasnˈt free. Instead, a sort of mass re-imagining of operations was needed to achieve production or service goals with the reduced hours. This involved the shortening or ending of meetings, reorganization of shifts, and often a total reevaluation of work processes to find where inefficiencies could be removed.
A manager of one office said, “We changed our shift plans. This changed the way of thinking in the workplace somewhat automatically; you know, you start to rethink and become more flexible. Instead of doing things the same, usual routine as before, people reevaluated how to do things and suddenly people are doing things very differently.”
The reward of shorter working hours without loss of pay was a unifying force of
collective desire. Besides, along with increased personal time and chances to exercise, participating working parents noted being able to spend more time with their kids, for men to be able to take on home-related tasks, and for both parents to do more chores and be less stressed out by doing them. Since the dawn of time, humans have been figuring out how to do more with less. Cloud storage, file sharing, instantaneous communication (瞬时通信), the Internet—these have all reduced the amount of time it takes to complete tasks in the workplace.
12.Why is shorter working hours good for productivity?
A.It encourages workers to cooperate.
B.It makes workers work actively.
C.It improves workersˈ creativity.
D.It helps workers keep energetic.
13.Why are the words of a manager of one office mentioned in Paragraph 5?
A.To explain a rule.B.To define a concept.
C.To make a prediction.D.To support a conclusion.
14.What is the positive effect of shorter working hours on employees?
A.More positive qualities.B.Increased life satisfaction.
C.More positive attitudes to life.D.Improved working relationships. 15.What makes shorter working hours possible?
A.The advances in technology.
B.The progress of the social system.
C.The promoted policies on science.
D.The increasing demand for well-being.
二、七选五
between them, I will tell you a famous story.
In 1953, in the Boston Marathon, one Japanese athlete Yamada unexpectedly won the world championship. When reporters asked what made him achieve such surprising success, he said, “Use wisdom to defeat others.” Many people didn’t believe him. Marathon is a sport which requires both physical strength and endurance (耐力). 17
Three years later, in the Fukuoka Marathon, Yamada won the championship again. A reporter asked him, “You have won the championship again. Can you talk about your experience?” 18 Everyone was puzzled by his so-called wisdom.
19 Yamada explained, “Before each race, I will check the whole route carefully. I will mark some important signs along the road. For example, the first mark is a bank, the second mark is a tree, and the third mark is a red house, thus marking to the end. When the race begins, I run as fast as I can towards the first goal, the bank. When I arrive at the bank, I will struggle for the second goal, the tree. 20 At first I didn’t know this method and set my goal at the end of the 40-kilometer marathon. Usually I got exhausted in the first 10 kilometers because I was frightened by the remote distance.”
Now we know the relationship. We will start from the long-term goal and break the long-term goal into several small goals, and these small goals are our short-term goals.
A.Later, the mystery was finally solved.
B.Yamada answered him the same as the last time.
C.And we need both wisdom and physical strength.
D.And we have both short-term goals and long-term goals.
E.That he said wisdom led to his success seemed reluctant.
F.Yamada said that he was full of wisdom to be the champion.
G.I break the marathon route into many small goals and finish them one by one.

Once, there was a villager called Rajkumar, who was very greedy and loved to take risks.
One sunny summer morning, Rajkumar decided to walk his sheep out of his village for grass. After leaving his village, Rajkumar led his sheep to a small hill, which was close to a big forest and far away from his village.
When reaching the hill, Rajkumar looked for green grass. And he found it in the northern hillside. Then he let his sheep stay there to eat grass. One hour later, suddenly it started to rain heavily. To let his sheep escape the rain, Rajkumar led them to a cave nearby. And he tied them there, preventing them from running away.
When the rain became less heavy, feeling bored, Rajkumar left the cave and walked around. Soon he came to the western hillside. He found another cave there. And to his amazement, he saw many big wild goats inside the cave, which were also taking shelter from rain. Rajkumar thought if he could have these goats, he’d be the richest man in his village. So, he decided to use grass to attract them to his village. He knew there was little chance of success because the local wild goats feared humans and didn’t have much trust in humans. But he still wanted to have a try.
Since there was no fresh grass nearby, he came back to the previous hillside and started collecting grass. Soon Rajkumar managed to find a lot of grass. However, he found he didn’t have a rope to tie it. Looking at his sheep he had tied with a rope, he decided to untie them and use the rope to tie the grass. Although that meant the sheep would later probably run away, thinking about so many goats, he thought it was a risk worth taking. So Rajkumar untied his sheep. He tied the grass using the rope.
Carrying the grass, he came to the cave where the wild goats stayed.
