substitute for single-use plastic packaging.Although some of Notpla’s products are suitable to be eaten, they are designed to be dissolved(溶解) after usage. The company’s film wrap is made of seaweed lining instead of a conventional plastic-based coating. This makes the film fully biodegradable and ideal for use as packaging for cupboard and bathroom supplies like coffee and toilet paper.According to the United Nations,331 million kilograms of plastic garbage is produced annually around the world.Roughly 60% of the estimated 9.15 billion tons of plastic produced since the early 1950s has been taken to landfills or abandoned outdoors.Plastics harm the water, the air,and our bodies. Many experts agree that single-use plastics are unnecessary and dangerous. Some governments and towns in the United States have taken action.New York has banned most plastic shopping bags, while plastic straws(吸管) have been banned in Miami Beach.Overseas,India stated in August that it plans to put a wide ban on single-use plastics this upcoming summer, with the European Union already implementing this ban.Seaweed comes in a variety of species and can be harvested or farmed.Notpla uses plants that have been farmed.Rodrigo Garcia Gonzalez and Pierre Paslie, the inventors of Notpla, initially considered seaweed as a solution to the world’s plastic problem for several reasons.Seaweed is abundant and grows quickly.Additionally,it doesn’t compete with land crops and is highly favored for its ability to remove some waste products like carbon from the atmosphere. In cooperation with the online food ordering service Just Eat,Notpla recently tested its st year, the two companies handed out 30,000 takeaway boxes at various UK restaurants.Plans are in the works to offer the boxes across Europe in will be a little tough.D.It will be rather successful.D(2022山东临沂二模)When evaluating people on various psychological tests, psychologists often distinguish between markers of absolute performance and relative performance.Absolute performance reflects the raw measurement of something, like the time it takes to run a mile.Relative performance is how a person rates in relation to their peers,as in what place a runner gets in a race. The standards we use to evaluate ourselves are almost always relative,as we compare ourselves to our peers and the standards that are most familiar to us.For instance,in my private practice,I have one patient I will call “Omar” who is dependent on social services and makes less than $30,000 per year at hisjob. While this level of poverty would lead most people to wake up depressed each day,Omar is one of the most optimistic and appreciative individuals I know. Why?Because most of his closest peers—his siblings and friends from childhood—have lives far worse than his.In contrast to Omar,I have another patient,an adolescent I’ll call “Lena”,whose family has property over $5 million.Lena, however, lives in an upper-class neighborhood where her family is at the lower end of the income level.Though Lena’s family allows her to enjoy possessions and experiences that less than 1 percent of her peers across the world can share, she consistently feels “less than”.Why?Because Lena doesn’t compare herself to the rest of the world. This is too abstract an exercise for her,as it would be for most of us.Accordingly, whether a psychologist is psychodynamic or cognitive-behavioral,the therapy(疗法) with individuals struggling with situational or psychological depression aims to solve the problems associatedwith basing one’s self-worth on comparisons with others.Psychologists try to help people focus on personal growth around the achievement of concrete goals in line with their values independent of the achievement of others. For all of us,defining these goals, especially during periods of emotional calm, can go a long way in helping us to avoid the trap of relativity that often leads to situational and psychological depression.12.What is the function of paragraph 1?A.To show the significance of evaluating people.B.To motivate readers to study psychological tests.C.To help people perform well in psychological tests.D.To provide some background information on evaluating people.13.Why does the author mention his two patients?A.To measure different achievements.B.To introduce the standards to evaluate people.C.To explain relative performance with examples.D.To contrast relative performance and absolute performance.14.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?A.Setting goals in life is essential for everyone.B.It’s important to avoid unhealthy comparisons.C.A sense of achievement can affect one’s happiness.D.Improving self-worth can help get rid of depression.15.What is the best title for the text?A.Happiness:Is It All Relative?B.Self-worth:Is It Measurable?C.Self-worth:Is It Based on Efforts?D.Happiness:Is It Associated with Achievement?Ⅱ.

Green is said to be the most restful color. It has the ability to reduce pain and relax people both mentally and physically. People who work in green environment have been found to have fewer stomach aches.Red can cause a person’s blood pressure to rise and increase people’s appetites (食欲). Many decorators will include different shades of red in the restaurant. People drive straight into their garages, hire lawn services, hang out in their backyards instead of their front porches(前走廊). These days, neighbors don't even know each other's names.Good neighbors and good friends are a lot like electricity or running water: We don't know how much we depend on them until we don't have them. In fact, the authors of a recent book, Refrigerator Rights, claim that refrigerators are signs of close relationships--after all, you wouldn't snatch a drumstick(鸡腿)from the refrigerator of a stranger. The surprising thing is that all it takes to strengthen your relationship with friends and neighbors is respect for their feelings, concern for their property, and a helping hand when it's needed. Here's how to develop your relationships with two types of vitally important people in your life._________________. A true friend doesn't flee when changes occur. The sign of a good friend is one who stays true through it all--marriage, parenthood, new jobs, new homes, the losses. Just because situations change doesn't mean the person has to.Friendships fade away if there isn't a balance between the give and the take. So make sure you aren't being a burden to your friends. Be sensitive to how much your friend can and can't offer you--be it time, energy, or help -- and don't step over the line. Meanwhile, friendships that drain(耗尽)you will not last. If a friendship is out of balance in this way, you'll need to talk the situation through. 1. Which sentence in the passage is the closest in meaning to the following one?A true friend will stay the same even when the situations change.2. Fill in the blank in Paragraph 4 with a proper sentence.(Within 10 words)_______________________________________________________________3. What advice is given in the last paragraph?(Within 10 words)_______________________________________________________________4. They have inbreeding (近亲繁殖) problems, and at the end these species may disappear,” he added.Other examples of affected animals include elephants in Mali, lions in Serengeti and crocodiles in Malawi. The report says about 20~30 percent of plant and animal species will be at higher risk of extinction due to global warming and a significant number of local species may disappear by 2050 as a consequence. Other consequences could include the spread of invasive species and infectious diseases, it said. The report urges more focus on restoration of damaged ecosystems, especially those key to dealing with climate change such as inland waters, forests and grasslands. The UNFAO also called for the creation of movement channels for animals in areas where their movement was affected. The organization said while more resources (资源) were flowing to biodiversity conservation, more action at the government and policy level was needed. It also urges local communities to developprojects that ease the effect of climate change on wildlife, naming ecotourism activities as an example.1. What does the author tell us in Paragraph 2?A. As beautiful as this place is, its name provides evidence of very real danger. Death Valley is a land of beautiful yet dangerous extremes. There are mountains that reach more than 3,000 meters into the sky. There is a place called Badwater that is the lowest area of land in the Western Hemisphere. If there were water there, it would be 86 meters below the level of the ocean.Death Valley can be dangerously cold during the winter months. Storms in the mountains can produce sudden flooding on the floor of the Valley. The air temperature during the summer has been as high as 57℃. The sun can heat the ground so that the temperature of the rocks and soil can be as high as 74℃. The extreme heat of Death Valley has killed people in the past. It will continue to kill those who do not honor this extreme climate. Death Valley does not forgive those who are not careful.Death Valley is a good example of the violence of nature. It contains evidence of several ancient volcanoes that caused huge explosions. Evidence of one of these explosions is called Ubehebe Crater. The explosion left a huge hole in the ground almost a kilometer and a half wide.In many areas of Death Valley it is easy to see where the ground has been pushed up violently by movement deep in the Earth. This movement has created unusual and beautiful rock formations. Some are red. Others are dark brown, gray, yellow or black. Other areas of rock look as if some huge creature violently broke and twisted the Earth to create unusual, sometimes frightening shapes. In other parts of Death Valley there are lines in the rock that show clearly that this area was deep under an ocean for many thousands of years. Much of the Valley is flat and extremely dry. In fact, scientists believe it is the driest place in the United States.Death Valley, part of the Great Mojave Desert, is a huge place. It extends more than 225 kilometers across the southern part of California, and across the border with Nevada.1.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A.The water in Badwater is 86 meters below the level of the ocean.B.The highest air temperature of Death Valley in summer can reach as high as 74℃.C.The ground has been pushed up violently by explosions of volcanoes.D.There might have been marine lives living in Death Valley.2.Why were some people killed by Death Valley?A.Because they didn't respect Death Valley and thus they were punished.B.Because it is extremely hot in summer and dangerously cold in winter.C.Because they were not careful enough to take with them what they needed.D.Because several volcanoes erupted and caused huge explosions.3.The underlined word “twisted” in Paragraph 4 most possibly means “________”.A.bent and turnedB.created and developedC.built and shapedD.changed and ruined4.The purpose of the article is to ________.A.encourage people to visit Death Valley, a beautiful national park in America B.warn people not to visit Death Valley because it is quite dangerous there C.introduce to us readers a special national park in America, Death Valley D.raise money for the protection of Death Valley because it is in danger now(三)Michele, a filmmaker, dives into an eerie (怪诞的) world. The usually colorful corals are a ghostly white. Most of the fish, crabs, and other animals have disappeared. The reef is sick and dying.Coral reefs are often called “the rainforests of the sea” because of their abundance of life forms. A great diversity of animals find food and shelter in every crack and crevice.Today's reefs are about 10,000 years old. Found in sunny, shallow water in warm seas all over the world, reefs are made up of the hard shells of millions of corals. As corals live and die, they create a giant, rocky honeycomb. Only a thin top layer is living coral.A reef grows only about as fast as your fingernails—threequarters of an inch a year. But coral reefs are huge, and in time a healthy reef can be thousands of miles long.Millions of people around the world rely on reef fish and other animals for food. And reefs provide protection from storms at sea. Without thousands of miles of reefssurrounding coastal areas, many beaches and even whole islands could be destroyed by the pounding of powerful ocean waves.“Let's say a grazing animal like t he parrot fish is overfished,” Michele explains. “Without them, the kind of algae (海藻) that the fish feed on could grow like weeds and take over the reef. The competition for space and sunlight could then starve the coral.”Nearly 27 percent of the world's coral reefs have been lost or damaged. But there is hope. Many reefs around the world—including the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the reefs off the Florida Keys in the United States—are now protected areas where scientists study how to keep reefs healthy. They determine how many and which kinds of fish can be taken for food without hurting the reef's delicate balance. There is hope, too, that people will learn to be good partners to the reefs. “We want our film to inspire people to help coral reefs,”says Michele. “For me, even though I may not go back to the South Pacific, just knowing the reefs are there and thriving brings a sense of contentment (满足) to my spirit.”1.What is the main purpose of the author in writing the passage?A.To describe what coral reefs are.B.To tell people to protect coral reefs.C.To introduce a film to people.D.To ask people to visit coral reefs.2.From the passage we can infer that ________.[A.coral reefs grow very fast[B.there are few huge coral reefsC.coral reefs appear mostly in deep waterD.it takes a long time to make a coral reef3.By mentioning the parrot fish, Michele wants to tell us ________.A.coral reefs need sunlight to surviveB.the biggest enemies of reefs are weedsC.the parrot fish feed on a kind of algaeD.it is easy to destroy coral reefs4.What is the author's attitude towards the protection of reefs? A.OptimisticB.Disappointed.C.Uncertain.D.Pessimistic (悲观的).。

However, for Liam Hannon, the summer of 2017 was a bit different. That year, Liam did not want to go to summer camp, so he made a deal with his dad to stay busy and active. He joined a program to give back to the community. Specifically, he was given a task to help homeless people.Liam pointed out to his dad that there were a lot of homeless people just outside their home in Cambridge, Massachusetts. These people were hungry and Liam thought he could do something to lift their spirits. Liam and his clad began making sandwiches. Together, they made 20 lunches that first week, which they then handed out to the homeless people. When the week was over, Liam realized he was not ready to put away his bread knife just yet, so Liam’s Lunches of Love was born.“No one should be hungry,” Liam wrote on his GoFundMe page. On the big day, there will be the graduation ceremony. Students will wear graduation costumes and hats that day. Parents, relatives, and friends may also be invited to the ceremony. When students enter the hall of the ceremony, they will see lots of other schoolmates. They will see that all of them are wearing some costumes and hats. This makes them feel that it is a very important and extraordinary day. This kind of feeling is rather hard to describe. It would be better to understand if one can personally experience this.As soon as the ceremony starts, the schoolmaster will give a speech. After the speech, the students will be called to go on stage(舞台) to receive their certificates (证书).This should be the most important part of the whole ceremony. During this moment, most students start to feel nervous, since hundreds of people are watching them. However, this is also the most wonderful moment for them. A five-year-old child may easily find and use apps on a smart phone. A ten-year-old child can move up through the levels of a video game easily. Their parents may think their children were born geniuses!Natural geniuses, however, are not common. But your parents are right if they think you are smarter than them. Most children are born smarter than their parents. This has been proved on IQ tests around the world recently. These tests have shown that over the last 100years, each new generation has become smarter than the older one. In other words, you are smarter than your parents and your parents are smarter than your grandparents. This increase in intelligence is called the "Flynn Effect". It was named after James Flynn. Flynn is a university professor in New Zealand. He first noticed this in 1980. According to his research, with each new generation, average IQ scores would increase by twenty percent. But why are people getting smarter? Flynn and many other researchers believe this has something to do with technology. New technologies have further developed our brains. They have made us think better. So we may be better at completing the missing parts of a puzzle than our parents. However, being smart doesn't make you wise. Wisdom comes with age and experience. A killer score on a computer game will not help you solve the everyday problems of life. For that, a smart kid will turn to the wisdom of his parents and grandparents.

Teens who have recently gotten their driver's licenses may be taking the wheel to drive to school this fall. However, parents fear when their teen starts driving. And it turns out that such parental fears are justified — so i t's worth reviewing how to keep your teen safe while he or she is behind the wheel.Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death in U. S. teens. Drivers 16 to 19 years old are at the greatest risk for crashes. In fact, their risk is 4 times greater than for older drivers. The teens at the greatest risk are those who are male, those carrying other teenage passengers in the car, and those still in their first year of driving. Nearly 50 percent of teen deaths related to automobile crashes happen on Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays between the hours of 3 p.m. and midnight. Why are teens at higher risk for motor vehicle crashes?Development. Teens haven‘t completely matured mentally and have greater risk-taking behaviors, possibly because they tend to underestimate the risk associated with a particular behavior. Teens also have a greater tendency to speed and to drive too close to the cars in front of them.No seatbelts. Teens have the lowest rate of seatbelt use among all driving groups.Alcohol. At least 25 percent of motor vehicle deaths in teens are related to alcohol use.Technological distractions. Cell phones, texting,MP3 players, and the like can all distract drivers greatly— and who more than teenagers?Be aware of your teen‘s driving practices and discuss safe driving habits when opportunities present themselves. Check out the applications and devices now available for restricting your teen‘s use of technology while driving. Some applications alert you to when your teen is texting while the vehicle is moving. Another device blocks incoming and outgoing texts when the car is running—incoming messages get an automatic reply (e. g, " I‘ m driving right now"),and phone calls go directly to voicemail. Light skin may be seen as a mark of beauty, intelligence and success. These beliefs can lead to social pressure even within the same racial group, if some members are darker skinned than others. The result is that skin lightening has become a common activity across Africa, Asia and other areas of the world. More and more people with dark skin are using skin lightening products, even if they may face health risks. They believe that having whiter skin will improve their lives. Many people think they will have a better chance of getting a job or marrying into a better family. Or they want to look like what their society generally considers beautiful. Some beauty care products and soaps contain chemicals that make skin lighter. This process is also called bleaching. But some of the chemicals are extremely dangerous. One of the most dangerous is hydroquinone.Hydroquinone has been banned in several countries. This chemical has been linked to kidney damage and some kinds of cancer. It also causes low birth weight in babies when mothers use it during pregnancy. At first, bleaching products make the skin color lighter. But after long term use they can cause problems. They can even make some skin darker. The chemicals in the products block and break down the natural process that gives color to skin. The skin loses its natural barrier to protect against sunlight. Then the skin can become thick and discolored. Usually the person will use more of the product in an effort to correct the problem, but this only makes it worse.Fatimata Ly treats skin conditions in the Senegalese capital. Dakar. Doctor Ly says skin bleaching has become a problem throughout Senegal. She says the chemicals are now more dangerous because they are stronger. Some cases have resulted in blackened fingernails, infections and permanent skin damage. And these are not the only risks. Experts say some people who change their skin color suffer emotional damage. They feel regret and sadness. They feel that instead of risking their health, theyshould have learned to love and accept their skin color as it was.55. These reforms included allowing foreign banks to offer credit cards to Chinese citizens. Now, researchers at the University of Missouri(MU) have found about 30% of Chinese urban households now own at least one credit card and the growth rate of credit adoption has been an average of 40% per year between 2004 and 2009.Rui Yao, an assistant professor of personal financial planning at MU, says that this large growth in such a small amount of time has positive and negative implications for the Chinese economy.―With more and more people taking advantage of credit cards in China, it certainly increases potential consumer buying power,‖ Yao said. ―However, we found that more than 90% of credit card users were unaware of safety issues existing in credit card use and more than 60% had little knowledge of the consequences of credit card debt. This lack of knowledge could create problems as credit c ard ownership is expected to grow at a rate of 11% a year.‖Yao found that while 72% of Chinese credit card holders were never late on their payment, only 55% were able to pay the full balance. She also found that 70% of Chinese credit card holders said that credit cards contributed to overspending.Yao believe that Chinese could benefit from financial education designed to help them plan for their financial future and encouraging the Chinese to take advantage of debt in a responsible fashion is impor tant for the Chinese economy. ―Appropriate use of debt can help households improve their quality of life as well as spur economic growth through an increase in market purchases,‖ Yao said.59. Why did China allow foreign banks to offer credit cards to Chinese citizens?A. To increase Chinese citizen‘s confidence in economyB. To respond to the urgent demand for financial reformsC. To persuade more Chinese citizens to accept credit cardsD. To improve competitiveness in the international market60. A lot of figures are used in the text in order to ______.A. provide concrete evidenceB. record the valuable dateC. give a detailed descriptionD. introduce a research method61. It can be inferred from the text that _____.A. education is the only solutions to future financial issuesB. overspending is mainly brought about by credit cardsC. some Chinese citizens lack knowledge of credit risksD. most Chinese credit card holders can‘t pay the balance62. The underlined word ―spur‖ in the last paragraph is closest in the meaning to_____A. promoteB. delayC. controlD. discourageDYears ago, when I started looking for my first job, wise advisers urged, ―Barbara, be enthusiastic! Enthusiasm will take you further t han any amount of experience.‖ How right they were! Enthusiastic people can turn a boring drive into an adventure, extra work into opportunity and strangers into friends.―Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm,‖ wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson. It is the paste that helps you hang in there when the thing gets tough. It is the inner voice that whispers, ―I can do it!‖ when others shout, ―No, you can‘t!‖ It took years and years for the early work of Barbara McClintock, a geneticist(遗传学家)who won the 1983 Nobel Prize in medicine, to be generally accepted. Yet she didn‘t let up on her experiments. Work was such a deep pleasure for her that she never thought of stopping. We are all born with wide-eyed, enthusiastic wonder and it is this childlike wonder that gives enthusiastic people such a youthful air, whatever their age. At 90, cellist Pablo Casals would start his day by playing Bach(巴赫). As the music flowed through his fingers, his bent shoulders would straighten and joy would reappear in his eyes. A s author and poet Samuel once wrote, ―Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.‖Enthusiastic people also love what they do, regardless of money, title or power. Patricia Mallrath, retired director of the Missouri Repertory Theater in Kansas City, was once asked where she got her enthusiasm. She replied, ―My father, a lawyer, long ago told me, I never made a penny until I stopped working for money.‖If we cannot do what we love as a full-time career, we can do it as a hobby. Elizabeth Layton of Wellsville, Kan, was 68 before she began to draw. This activity ended her depression that had troubled her for at least 30 years, and the quality of her work led one critic to say, ―I am persuaded to call Layton a genius.‖We can‘t afford to waste tears on ―might-have-beens‖. We need to turn the tears into sweat as we go after ―what-can-be.‖ We need to live each moment whole-heartedly, with all our senses—finding pleasure in the sweet smell of a backyard garden, the simple picture of a six-year-old, and the beauty of a rainbow.63. But the biggest factor holding most of us back is actually our own selves. The Huffington Post released a list of seven mistakes we need to let go of in order to become happier people. Let‘s take a look.1. Placing too much emphasis on fulfillment (成就感)Those who put a lot of pressure on themselves to be happy feel more lonely on a daily basis than those who do not, according to research conducted at the University of Denver, US.2. Not movingIt‘s no secret that a healthy lifest yle is a big part of happiness. Something as simple as a walk can help you increase your creativity and expose you to essential vitamins.5. Not reflecting on the pastIn a 2012 study on nostalgia (怀旧) and emotion, participants reported a higher sense of physiological (生理的) comfort when they looked back on the past. Still, I felt energetic; despite the hills it was g oing to be a fine run.Just ahead of me was Peggy Mimno, a teacher from Mount Kisco, New York. She too was running easily, moving along at my speed. The pac e(步速) felt comfortable, so 1 decided to stay where I was; why pay attention to pace when she was setting such a nice one? I'd overtake (追上) her later on when she tired. So I ran behind her. The course headed north for five miles, wandered west for a hilly mile, then turned south again along a winding road. The race was getting harder. We had four miles left and already it was beginning to be real work.Peggy overtook a young runner. She seemed to know him, for they exchanged a few cheerful words as she passed him. Their exchange worried me. You don't chat during a race unless you are feeling good, and Peggy plainly was.Still, I was close enough to overtake her if she tired, so I didn't give up hope completely. We were getting nearer to a long punishing hill now and it would be the test. We were a mile from the finish line, so whatever happened on the hill would almost certainly determine who crossed it first. As I moved up the hill, my attention wandered for a few minutes. When I looked up, Peggy was moving away--first five yards, then ten, then more. Finally it was clear that there was no hope of catching her. She beat me soundly. There is an important lesson in that race. Women are thought to be weaker, slower and not nearly as skilled in sport. Yet as Peggy Mimno so clearly showed, the similarities between men and women runners are more important than the differences. I have run with a number of women, andI can say that it is often hard work.1. What did the writer think of the race in the beginning?A. It would be hard work.C. It would be an easy race.C. It would be a test of his strength.D. It would be a good learning experience.
阅读理解A(2019·洛阳第二次统考)There is more of a connection between foodand culture than you may think. On an individual level, we grow up eatingthe food of our culture. It becomes a part of who we are. Many associatefood from our childhood with warm feelings and good memories and it tiesus to our families, holding a special and personal value for us. Food fromour family often becomes the comfort food we seek as adults in times of frustration and stress. On a large scale, traditional food is an important part of culture. It also operates as an expression of culture identity. Immigrants bring it wherever they go, and it is a symbol of pride for their culture and means of coping with homesickness. Many immigrants open their own restaurants and serve traditional dishes. However, the food does not remain exactly the same. Some materials needed to make traditional dishes may not be readily available, so the taste and flavor can be different from what they would prepare in their home countries. Additionally, immigrants do not only sell dishes to people from the same countries as them, but to people from different countries. Therefore, they have to make small changes about the original dishes to cater to a wider range of customers. Those changes can create new flavors that still keep the cultural significance of the dishes. We should embrace our heritage(传统) through our culture’s food but also become more informed about other cultures by trying their food. It is important to remember that each dish has a special place in the culture to which it belongs, and is special to those who prepare it. But unnecessarypurchasing, and the mass production of clothing, aren’t just hard on our wallets—they are hard on the environment. One of the first steps in getting unwanted clothes out of your cupboard is to sell or consign(寄送) them. But because popular resale shops like Buffalo Exchange and Crossroads don’t accept fast fashion brands because they don’t profit enough from them, people often turn to throwing their old clothing in the dustbins. Many consumers don’t realize that clothing and textiles(纺织品) are recyclable or how to recycle them. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the United States generated 16.22 million tons of waste textiles in 2017 and recycled only 2.62 million tons. Ten and a half million tons of textiles were finally buried under the ground that year.Vetements, a Parisian fashion brand worn by celebrities like Kanye West and Rihanna, aimed to bring awareness to the problem of fast fashion brands and clothing waste with a recent window display at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York. The window contained a giant pile of clothes. The pile, which grew daily, was made up of old clothes donated by Saks employees and outofseason items from the store. On Aug.10, the clothing from the display was donated to RewearAble, a Long Island recycling program that collects old clothes and textiles, and prepares them for resale or repurposes the textiles.5.What keeps customers coming back to fast fashion brands like Forever 21, H&M and Zara?A.Good shopping environment.B.Discounts and promotional activities.C.Warm and thoughtful service of the salesmen.D.Low prices and a continuous supply of new looks.6.Where can you find the data that best supports “fast fashion is hard on the environment”?A.In paragraph 2.B.In paragraph 3.C.In paragraph 4.D.In paragraph 5.7.What can be learned about the window display created by Vetements?A.It can help the environment.B.It does good to people’s health.C.It can help change people’s lives.D.It will take the lead in the latest fashion.8.What is the best title for the text?A.How to Stop Buying Unnecessary ClothesB.Fast Fashion Brands Spread Around the WorldC.The Advantages and Disadvantages of Fast FashionD.Fast Fashion Can Kill Your Wallet and the EnvironmentⅡ.七选五Many people struggle with saying “No”. 1.________ Remember, just because you can do something does not mean it is required.

AEat nuts, live longer. Researchers have found that those who eat a handful of peanuts every day significantly decrease their risk of dying from all causes compared to those who do not eat nuts. A new study concludes that all types of nuts seem to be protective.Researcher Ying Bao is with the Department of Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard University Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. She and her colleagues looked at the impact of nut consumption by analyzing two huge studies that began in 1980 - the Nurses’ Health Study, which tracks the well-being of more than 76,000 women, and 42,000 men enrolled in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study.Among the questions asked at the beginning of the studies was, 'how frequently do you eat nuts?' The information was updated every two to four years. Bao says the participants were followed for three decades.―What we observed is that people wh o eat more nuts are less likely to die over the next 30 years," said Bao. "So, for example, if a person eat(s) nuts once per day, that person has a 20 percent lower risk of dying.‖Bao says eating a handful of nuts five or more times per week was associated with a 29 percent reduced risk of dying from heart disease and an 11 percent lower risk of cancer death. A serving size is 28 grams.Nuts contain nutrients, including high quality proteins, vitamins and minerals, all of which have anti-cancer effects and may help protect the heart.Bao says researchers are planning studies to find out how nuts are beneficial to human health. The study on the health benefits of nuts was funded by the International Tree Nut Council Research and Education Foundation.26. From a very young age, Artie Shaw wanted to play his clarinet better than anyone. He wanted his sound and music to be perfect. He worked at this task much of his life.He began working as a professional musician when he was fifteen. He left home and began playing in bands across the United States. In 1928, young Artie Shaw traveled to Chicago, Illinois to hear the great trumpet player, Louis Armstrong. Poachers(偷猎者) and hunters have killed off hundreds of thousands of elephants to obtain this precious material. Now, affected areas are taking action. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) announced on Wednesday that key states where poaching takes place have promised to stop the ivory trade and protect Africa’s elephants. In the 1980s, as many as 1 million elephants across Africa were killed for their ivory tusks. This continued until 1989, when the Convention on International Trade in Species (CITES) voted to ban all trade in ivory. With trade choked off, demand for ivory fell. Elephant populations slowly began to increase. However, this progress was short-lived.According to the IUCN, 2011 saw the highest levels of poaching and illegal ivory trading in at least 16 years. Around 25,000 elephants were killed in Africa that year. Preliminary data from the IUCN shows even higher levels of illegal trade may have b een reached in 2013. ―With about 22,000 elephants illegally killed in 2012, we continue to face a critical situation,‖ said John E. Scanlon, CITES Secretary-General. ―Current elephant poaching in Africa remains far too high, and could soon lead to local extinctions if the present killing rate continues.‖At the African Elephant Summit, key African states where elephants make their home agreed to develop a ―zero-tolerance attitude‖ towards poaching. The deal calls for maximum sentences for poachers and hunters, and increased cooperation between affected states. Officials are determined to classifying wildlife trading as a serious crime — and to making sure that the people who commit it are punished. All participants at the conference agreed to sign the deal. With these states coming together, there may yet be hope for elephants. (293 words)36. What’s the best title for this passage?A. A. But researchers say combining different farming methods may help.Since the world food crisis several years ago, researchers have directed more of their attention to small farms. Most farms in areas south of the Sahara Desert are only about one or two hectares. One of the goals is to increase production without necessarily clearing more land to grow additional crops.American researchers say that can happen with greater use of an agricultural system called perennation. It mixes food crops with trees and perennial plants – those that return year after year.Mr. Reganold, who is with Washington State University, says poor soil may have resulted from years of weathering that washed away many nutrients. He says some farmers may have done more harm than good.He estimates that up to two billion dollars worth of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium is lost from African soil each year. The scientist says the word perennation defines three systems that are already used in Africa. The oldest of the three is called evergreen agriculture. This is where farmers plant trees with their crops. John Reganold says farmers in Africa have been doing this for sixty years, but it seems to be growing in popularity. The method is gaining widespread use in countries such as Niger, Burkina Faso, Malawi and Zambia. The trees are planted among maize, millet or sorghum crops. They not only add nitrogen to the soil through their roots, but also through their leaves when they fall off and break down. At other times of the year, the trees can protect plants from strong sunlight.Mr. Reganold was one of three researchers who wrote a report about perennation. It was published in the journal Nature.41. Farmland in Africa ________.A. A. is often small in sizeB. can produce more than enough crops for AfricansB.
