James was particularly devoted to the cat, and when he had to leave town for several days, he left Herbert careful instructions about the pet’s care. At the end of his first da y away, James telephoned his brother, “How is Edgar?”“Edgar is dead.” Herbert answered. There was a pause. Then James said, “Herbert, you’re insensitive (漠然的). You know how close I was to Edgar. You should have broken the news to me slowly. When I asked about Edgar tonight, you should have said, ‘Edgar’s on the roof , but I have called the fire department to get him down.’ And tomorrow when I called, you could have said the firemen were having trouble getting Edgar down, but you were hopeful they would succeed. Then when I called the third time, you could have told me that the firemen have done their best, but unfortunately Edgar had fallen off the roof and was at the veterinarian’s (兽医站). Then when I called the last time, you could have said that although everything possible had been done for Edgar, he had died. That’s the way a sensitive man would have told me about Edgar. The only thing youhave to do is to follow his advice.Speaking about doctor’s advice, I can’t help telling you a funn y story. An old gentleman came to see the doctor. The man was very ill.He told the doctor abouthis weakness, memory loss and serious problems with his heart and lungs. The doctor examined himand said there was no medicine for his disease. He told his patient to go to a quiet place for a month and have a good rest. That’s what all doctors thought , until they heard about Herpin. Herpin, it was said , never slept. Could this be true? The doctors decided to see this strange man themselves.Herpin was 90 years old when the doctors came to his home in New Jersey. They thought for sure that he got some sleep of some kind. So they stayed with him and watched every movement he made. But they were surprised. Though they watched him hour after hour and day after day, they never saw him sleeping. In fact, he did not even own a bed. He never needed one.The only rest that Herpin sometimes got was sitting in a comfortable chair and reading newspapers. The doctors were puzzled by this strange continuous sleeplessness. They asked him many questions, hoping to find an answer. They found only one answer that might explain his condition. Herpin remembered some talk about his mother having been injured several days before he was born. But that was all. Was this the real reason? No one could be sure. Herpin died at the age of 94.8. In the past, only people with a good deal of money could travel on holidays to other countries. More people travel today than in the past because there is a growing middle class in many parts of the world; that is to say, people now have more money for travel. Special plane fares(费用) for tourists make travel less expensive and more attractive than ever before. One person doesn’t travel for the same reason as another. But most people enjoy seeing countries that are different from their own. They also like to meet new people and to taste new food.Tourism causes many changes in a country and in people’s lives. That sounds like good news—but do we really need more people to go to university? For that matter, does the world need more universities? The answer feels like it should be yes.Education is good, is it not? But everything has a cost.Education takes time. We could insist that everyone study full-time until the age of 45 but that would surely be too much. And perhaps half the population studying until they’r e 21 is also too much. As for universities, they consume financial and intellectual resources—perhaps those resources might be better spent elsewhere. My own personal opinion is strongly in favor both of going to university, and of simply having universities around. The main skill I learnt at university was to write about economics, and I use that skill every day of my professional life, even an abstract education seems practical to me. And I now live in Oxford, one of the world’s most celebrated (著名的) university cities. Oxford’s experience certainly suggests that universities have much to offer. The city’s architecture and green spaces have been shaped—greatly for the better, on balance —by the 900-year-old institution at its heart. The beauty attracts tourists and locals too.But these are samples of one. Many people do not find themselves using the skills and knowledge they accumulated at university. And Oxford’s dreaming spires (尖顶) aren’t terribly representative of global universities as a whole.28. Which of the following is the most proper title?A. Does the world need more universities?B. Is education really necessary?C. Is British university system the best?D. Do you prefer universities abroad?29. Which of the following about the writer is TRUE?A. He is an economist now.B. He likes Oxford’s architecture and green spaces most.C. The skill he learnt at university is practical in his career.D. He holds the view that going to univeristy is a waste of resources.30. The writer develops the passage by ______.A. comparing his experience with others’B. persuading us with his own experience and opinionC. describing and sharing his own university experienceD. informing us of the advantages of universities31. In the following part, the writer is likely to ______.A. list more supporting details about his opinionB. show more disadvantages about going to universitiesC. present some opposite opinions about universitiesD. draw a conclusion about the topicDMore than 10 million Chinese cultural relics have been lost overseas, most of which were stolen and illegally shipped out of China during the times of war before 1949. About 1. 67 million pieces are housed in more than 200 museums in 47 countries, which accounts for 10 percent of all lost Chinese cultural relics, and the rest are in the hands of private collectors. Most of these treasures are owned by museums or private collectors in the United States, Europe, Japan and Southeast Asian countries. There are more than 23,000 pieces in the British Museum, most of which were stolen or bought for pennies more than 100 years ago.The major method to recover these national treasures was to buy them back. In some cases, private collectors donated the relics to the government. Also the government can turn to official channels(渠道) to demand the return of relics. In 2003, a priceless bronze pig's head dating from the Qing Dynasty was returned to its home in Beijing after it was removed by the Anglo-French Allied Army over 140 years ago. Macao entrepreneur(企业家) Stanley Ho donated 6 million yuan to buy it back from a US art collector and then donated it to the Poly Art Museum in Beijing.Although buying-back is the most feasible way to recover the lost treasures, limited funding is always a big headache. In recent years, the Chinese government has improved efforts to recover the precious cultural relics lost overseas. It has started a national project on the recovery of the treasures and has set up a database(数据库) collecting relevantinformation. It has signed several international agreements with many countries onthis matter, and is also looking for international cooperation to recover the relics by working closely with several international organizations.32. What is the passage mainly about?A. How to recover cultural relics.B. The efforts to recover Chinese cultural relics.C. Stanley Ho donated a bronze pig's head to Beijing.D. Chinese cultural relics were stolen by the Anglo-French Allied Army.33. Most of lost Chinese cultural relics .A. have been recovered by the Chinese governmentB. were bought for little money by foreignersC. are owned by private collectorsD. are housed in foreign museums34. Which of the following statements about the bronze pig's head is NOT true?A. It was made in the Qing Dynasty.B. It is now in the Poly Art Museum in Beijing.C. It was donated by the French government to China.D. It was removed by the Anglo-French Allied Army over 140 years ago.35.

GLENEAGLES HOTELB. COMO HOTELC. CRUISES HOTELD. TREMEZZO HOTEL22. The purpose of this passage is to__________.A. explain how to enjoy holiday livesB. advertise for hotel serviceC. attract more people to travel thereD. introduce some winning worksBI first saw a crayfish (小龙虾) around 2001. A friend brought one into the office and told me itwas a female animal that was reproducing (繁殖) on its own. We realized the new type of animalwas reproducing itself by the millions. We think that in the 1990s, two crayfish got children either in a pet store or in the wild.Something went wrong and one of the daughters laid eggs without any males. It’s not unusual fo such a sudden change like this to happen, but normally, the children can’t live on or reproduce, the new type won’t spread. For some reason, this daughter and her children did.In some way, many of the new crayfish appeared in German pet stores. They would naturallyincrease, and their owners would often set the children free, which let the animals reproduce andspread farther. In 2003, scientists officially proved that animals like crayfish were, in fact, reproducing themselves. They’ve gone from that single female 25 years ago to millions, or maybebillions, of the same crayfish found throughout Europe and Madagascar. In 2018, we published a map of the clones’ genetic code (克隆类遗传密码图). This type isbecoming a really useful tool for researchers like me: We can use crayfish-like animals to studyeverything from cancer development to the effects of drugs on the brain. Now that we know thiscode, we can start to try it in the lab. For example, we might try to make these animals grow to largersizes so people can sell them for food. This is already happening in Madagascar. It turns out thatcrayfish are pretty tasty. It’s easy to get lots of them too because they grow up in about three monthsand lay hundreds of eggs. Just put one in a pool and wait.23. What do people think happened to crayfish in the 1990s?A. Crayfish’s children could not live on or reproduce .B. Crayfish got their lives in a scientific way in the lab.C. A daughter crayfish got a strange ability to reproduce.D. All animals like crayfish could reproduce themselves.24. What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us?A. The reason why crayfish became pets.B. The place wherecrayfish came from.C. The different ways to raise crayfish.D. The fact ofcrayfish’s self-reproduction.25. The research on the birth of crayfish will be helpful in __________.①diet ②medicine ③brain ④oceanA. ①②B. ③④C. ①③D. ②④26. Where could the passage be picked from?A. a cookbookB. a science magazineC. an advertisementD. a guide brochureCOn some Swedish trains, passengers carry their e-tickets in their hands. About 3,000 Swedes have chosen to put microchips (微芯片) beneath the skin between fingers. The chips, which cost around $150, can hold personal facts, credit-card numbers and medical records. They depend on Radio Frequency ID (RFID), a technology already used in payment cards, tickets and passports. There are 10,000 people with chip implants(植入) around the world. Sweden, home to several microchip companies, has the largest share. People can order do-it-yourself kits. And sometimes they get T-shirts that say “I got chipped”.Jowan ?sterlund, the founder of BioHax, a Swedish firm, argues that chips are safer than mobile phones because it is harder to steal information from them. But some people still have worries. RFID chips do not have GPS, but they leave a trail when they are used to open doors, operate printers, etc. In 2004 a Mexican government official and his workmates had chips placed in their arms that tracked who had accessed important information. So why take the risk? Less trouble is one reason. The equipment for microchip implantssecond most exists wherever new payments are accepted. Sweden is well suited, as the world’scash-less country (after Canada). But the chips have little use unless all companies agree to work together. Few shops recognize this chip implants yet, even those organizations that do have had some troubles in themicrochips, they saw private beginning. W hen Swedish rail officials began scanning passengers’ information rather than evidence of ticket buying. For now the chips are used largely as business cards, keys or to store important information. So the desire to win notice or admiration is another explanation. Chip enthusiasts want to equip human bodies with technology. Elon Musk, an American businessman has spent money on this technology that connects machines with human brains, which caused fears from some Christians.27. What is special about the microchips mentioned in the passage?A. They have already become part of human bodies.B. They have offered access to personal information.C. They have become a symbol of modern society.D. They have used the latest technology in payment.28. Jowan failed to consider the fact that __________.A. the information is safer to keep on chips than phonesB. RFID chips can also have GPS as mobiles phones doC. information on chips is likely to be accessed and let outD. some microchips have already been equipped with GPS29. Why are people willing to risk putting chips into their bodies?A. Because developed countries are well prepared for chip implants.B. Because they want to save themselves the trouble of cash payment.C. Because they encourage more companies to recognize chip implants.D. Because it is an attention-catching technology that makes things easier.30. We can infer from Paragraph 5 that __________.A. There is a long way to go before the implanted chips are widely applied.B. Many companies take a wait-and-see attitude towards this technology.C. The chip implants have caused difficulty for both users and companies.D. Microchips always successfully offer information about ticket buying.DMe : Hello Dad! I’ve an exam today. He : All the best son! I’m getting a strong feeling. You’ll rock it today. May god bless you!Me : Thankyou dad. Bye!And I hang up the call.My friend standing beside me chuckles, “Do you do this before every exam?” Ianswer, “Yes, feel good and encouraged, and so do they.”It hardlytakes a minute to call up your parents, but itgives a lot of confidence and makes their day too.Not calling up parents is indeed a common mistake college students make. For me the mostcommonmistake is treating it like school. When I went to university, most of the people around mecame straight from school. They had the thought like children who were being forced to dosomething. Th ey skipped classes, sat at the back talking during lectures and even didn’t do thereading! They were still in “school”mode, thinking that the point was to get through it with the least effort. For my part, I was there after working in a beer factory for three years. I knew that I had gone touniversity because I wanted to learn. I wasn’t there because my teachers at school made me go, ormy parents made me go, or because my friends were all going. I had chosen to go. I think that thisput me in a different mind. I read all the set texts and I went to all the lectures and seminars. Donget me wrong. I had fun too, but I was there to learn and I learnt a lot. I enjoyed it and it wasrewarding to learn about the authors, their works, the critic's opinions etc.The kids around me thought that reading six novels for a module and going to a lecture for eachnovel was too much work. They would read one novel, go to the lecture for that one and write theiressay on that one book. They thought that they were really clever to work out an easier way ofdoing it. But they were tricking themselves out of an education! There are other mistakes that may cause future regrets for the college students. A large number ofthem focus too hard on getting good grades, showing no interest in out-of-class side projects. Somecomplain that they are too busy because of school. As a matter of fact, they do not seriously treat allthe free resources that universities have to offer.31. The writer begins the passage with a dialogue in order to __________.A. show off his writing skillsB. expect hisfriend to admire himC. lead in the topic naturallyD. show he likesmaking phone calls32. What do most university students usually do in the opinion of the writer?A. They attend every class for free chatting.B. They show little interest in active learning.C. They avoid reading books all the time.D. They highly praise independent learning.33. Why did the writer want to go to college?A. Because his parents forced him to.B. Because he learned from his friend.C. Because his teachers asked him to.D. Because he was dying for knowledge.34. What do the underlined sentences in Paragraph 5 mean?A. They lost their learning chances without noticing it.B. They made up excuses for their laziness in learning.C. They often pretended to be working hard at everything.D. They told lies about what they were doing in college.35. According to the passage, college students are supposed to __________.A. stop being hard on themselves academicallyB. make the most of the university they go to.C. have some relaxation after taking classesD. feel thankful for what they are doing now第二节(共5小题,每小题2分, 满分10分)根据黑布林文本阅读,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
