Cultural differences in business entertaining(招待,款待)include problems such as whom one entertains and where, and how one entertains. In countries where position is important, it is not advisable to invite people of different positions to the same dinner party. Americans will often invite people to their homes. However, in some societies the home is considered too personal, unworthy, or too small to serve as a proper place for business entertaining. In some countries there is a “help yourself” method of entertaining done in the home. This method does not work well when entertaining people whose culture teaches them to wait to be asked three times before accepting an offer of food. For example, a Chinese guest went hungry all the evening without eating though he was quite hungry because he was too shy to take food after only being asked to do so once. In another case, an American woman executive (负责人) was being entertained in London. After having the tea served, the American woman helped herself to cream and sugar rather than waiting to be served. The English hostess was upset by the thought that she was not serving quickly enough.
As a general rule, a small gift from your home country is OK. A gift that is tied to the particular interest of the person is especially good. Gifts for children are also well received. Be careful that the “hometown”gift you are bringing to Singapore was not made in Hong Kong. Because many gifts carry symbolic meanings, it is always best to seek the advice of a cultural information before selecting gifts. The giving of large gifts, or payments for special service, should only be carried out after talking with legal department in the home and host culture.

Table manners for children:
1. Swallow(吞) all of your food before you talk.
2. If you put something that is too hot in your month, don’t spit it out. Instead,
reach for your drink and take a quick sip (一小口).
3. Ask someone to pass food that is not right in front of you. Don’t reach for it.
4. Chew with your mouth closed.
5. Food is for eating not for playing.
6. Ask the server to replace dropped silverware (银餐具). Don’t go under the table
to get it.
7. Don’t stand by or on the chair.
8. Don’t play with hair at the table.
Tips for parents:
When dinning out, try to keep your meal time as close as possible to the usual time at home. You might try eating a little earlier to avoid the crowd. If you have younger children, let them sit facing a window so they will find something to keep them interested. If that’s not possible, let your children sit by a wall or away from other people.
Keep it in mind that all children need to be reminded often at home and in public.
Praise your children for using good manners. If you only tell your children what they’ve done wrong, they have no reason to behave well. After all, you’re only giving them attention when they misbehave.
Most importantly, model (模仿) good behavior, your children watch everything you do. Teaching them to use good manners is not about impressing anyone. Rather, you are building confidence, awareness, and consideration of others on your children.
With these tools, they will succeed wherever they choose to go.

I must have been about fourteen then, and I cleared away the incident from my mind
with the easy carelessness of youth. But the words, Carl Walter spoke that day, came back to me years later, and ever since have been of great value to me.
Carl Walter was my piano teacher. During one of my lessons he asked how much practicing I was doing. I said three or four hours a day.
“Do you practice in long periods, an hour at a time?”
“I try to.”
“Well, don’t,” he declared. “When you grow up, time won’t come in long periods.
Practice in minutes, whenever you can find them five or ten before school, after lunch, between household tasks. Spread the practice through the day, and piano-playing will become a part of your life.”
When I was teaching at Columbia, I wanted to write, but class periods, theme-reading, and committee meetings filled my days and evenings. For two years I got practically nothing down on paper, and my excuse was that I had no time. Then
I remembered what Carl Walter had said. During the next week I conducted an experiment.
Whenever I had five minutes unoccupied, I sat down and wrote a hundred words or so.
To my astonishment, at the end of the week, I had a rather large manuscript (手稿) ready for revision. Later on I wrote novels with the same piecemeal method. Though my teaching plan had become heavier than ever, every day there were spare moments which could be caught and put to use. I even took up piano-playing again, finding that the small breaks of the day provided enough time for both writing and piano
practice.
There is an important trick in this time-using formula (公式): you must get into your work quickly. If you have but five minutes for writing, you can’t afford to waste four chewing (咀嚼) your pencil. You must make your mental preparations beforehand, and concentrate on (集中) your task almost immediately when the time comes.
Fortunately, rapid concentration is easier than most of us realize.
I admit I have never learnt how to let go easily at the end of the five or ten
minutes. But life can be counted on to supply interruptions(打断). Carl Walter has had a deep influence on my life. To him I owe the discovery that even very short periods of time add up to all useful hours I need, if I put my heart into it without delay.

Have you ever felt your mind falling into disorder after a sleepless night? You couldn’t come up with an original thought no matter how hard you tried.
You were properly right if you thought that you needed enough sleep. Dr. Home,
a sleep researcher in England, studied 24 college students. One group got their normal
eight hours of sleep. The other group didn’t get the smallest amount of sleep—they stayed awake all night. The next day, Dr. Home tested the students. He asked them questions that required creative and original thinking. One of the questions was “How many uses can a cardboard box be put to?”
The result? The wide-awake students did well on the test. The tired students did poorly.
Research has already shown that tired people can do OK on tests of habitual thinking, like simple addition. But Dr. Home tested creative thinking only.
As part of his study, he offered an amount of money as a reward to the sleepy students if they did well. But even this encouragement was not enough to help the students conquer their tiredness. They did poorly. Dr. Home believes that the part of the brain where thinking takes place may become very tired during waking hours.
Sleep may help to repair the brain. “Without any sleep,” he emphasizes, “even if you pay closer attention, you can’t do better.” This study gives people something to think about, especially like doctors who must stay awake all night and then make quick decisions.
63. It can be known from the text that lack of sleep may ________________.
A. be a cause of some serious diseases
B. cause one to lose his ability
to calculate (计算)

66. Why couldn’t the reward offered in the study attract the sleepy students?
A. Because they were too tired and too sleepy.
B. Because they did not care for money at all.
C. Because they thought sleep might help to repair the brain.
D. Because they waited for bigger rewards.

With his standard Mandarin pronunciation, practiced skills on Chinese expressions and special humor with a Beijing accent, Dashan has become a household name across China. People have always wondered how the 40-year-old Canadian can be so skillful in the Chinese language even though it is considered as one of the most difficult languages in the world. But to Dashan, the great challenge was a piece of cake because of (由于) his deep interest, proper method and the excellent environment he created for himself.
Interest is the best teacher.” Even if the 20-year-old Mark Rowswell —Dashan’s real name—had n’t fully realized what attracted him to the Chinese department at the University of Toronto in Canada, he was already deeply interested in Chinese culture when he decided to have further studies in Beijing.
Entering the Chinese department of Beijing University in 1988, Dashan felt like a duck in water. Study is always a hard job, no matter how much interest you have. Therefore, effective ways are necessary to improvement. “Learn for life and learn in life” is Dashan’s belief.
As a freshman at the University of Toronto, Dashan studied the textbooks, which especially aimed on foreign Chinese learners. They did help him build a solid foundation.
However, that’s far from enough to grasp the Chinese language. Starting in his junior year, Dashan began to read original Chinese novels, Chinese newspapers and even the Selected Works of Deng Xiaoping. “Only the material for Chinese native readers could give me a proper sense of the language,” he said.
The language that is the daily means of communication is the principle that Dashan always keeps in his mind. To learn in daily life requires a favorable language environment, which is also necessary for improvement. Dashan admits it is hard for Chinese English learners to be brought into a good English speaking environment, but he insists, “To listen and speak as much as possible does help.”
To help Chinese English learners develop a favorable habit, Dashan took part in a VCD program—“Travel with Dashan”—to teach daily and up-to-date English in real-life situations.
