(8分)On a recent trip to the island of Newfoundland, Canada, my husband 22.
asked our talkative cab driver what made him most proud to be a native.
“Our generosity and hospitality(好客),” he replied in a strong local accent. “If your car breaks down in the middle of nowhere, someone will stop to help. People here are kind like that.” His answer rang in my mind during that ride with my husband and teenage kids, as we headed out to explore on the first day of our vacation.
Little did I know we were about to experience some of that remarkable Newfoundland kindness for ourselves. We met Alma that same morning at the start of a long hike. Our teenagers hurried ahead, and as we walked behind, admiring the scenery, two women in sunglasses and summer hiking equipment stopped. They’d heard us discussing dif ferent routes, and then asked if we’d like suggestions. They looked to be in their 40s, and were both enthusiastic to share their local expertise.
We listened eagerly, taking mental notes, until one of the women asked, “You have a car, right?” I explained that there were no cars available during our week on the island, so we had to rely on cabs instead.
“Oh no,” she said, “you need a car.” And then, as casually as if offering a piece of chewing gum (口香糖), she said, “Take mine!” My husband and I just smiled in disbelief, dumbfounded.
“Why not?” she insisted. “You need a car to get to know all these places.”
“But you don’t even know us,” I said.
“That doesn’t matter,” she continued with absolute determination.
Surprised, I looked over at her friend, who shrugged and said, “That’s Alma.”
Forty minutes of talking later, my family climbed into Alma’s car. We sp ent the rest
of our vacation discovering different areas of this beautiful island. But it wasn’t the groups of whales we saw, or the vast areas of woodland, that made this place so memorable. Instead, it was the act of kindness from a complete stranger that made us realize how special Newfoundland really was.

24.(8分)“Mom, what is that?” asked my son. “The Bride of Chucky?”
The old doll I was holding was pretty scary. Her glass eyes were especially horrible, closing when she stood upright and flying open when she lay flat. Once she had been loved, but she had been stored in an attic (阁楼) for decades, where the extremes of heat and cold can be hard on a girl’s looks. Throw her in the waste bin? Maybe. But first,
let’s check eBay.
I clicked, supplied the required information about condition, including defects (i.e., “Only a miracle could save this doll”), and uploaded its photos. I sold it for $5.
The buyer was happy: “As described!” he wrote on my feedback page.“Super seller!” The doll found a home and, I hope, a new life. Maybe she was used to repair other dolls. Perhaps those strange eyes got fixed and once again can inspire a child’s love. It’s a win-win, if you ask me.
I also sold lots of other stuff. None of them brought in a lot of money, though I have been surprised at the occasional bidding war, like, for example, the one over an old swimsuit that would have made Brigitte Bardot look bad. And some customers, let’s face it, are strange. Recently I had a hard time convincing an Australian would-be buyer of an Irish souvenir bell that I don’t shop internationally; it’s just too much trouble. He could have flown to Ireland and bought his own bell for the price he was willing to pay. Another time, a buyer complained that the electric wire on an old radio was dirty. Really? Dirty? The wire was black. But I aim to please, so I offered a refund.
So why bother with the dealing and small profits? Because I don’t like abandoning the past. All these treasures once had stories. They meant something. But the people who gave them that meaning are gone, and I simply cannot rescue everything. I can’t even sew. So I find it satisfying that a new owner, discovered via eBay, will continue the story in his or her own way.
1、What was the doll like?
A.It was lovely.
B.It was beautiful.
C.It looked frightening.
D.It was pretty ordinary.
2、Which can best replace the underlined word “defects” in Paragraph 3? A.Faults.
B.Virtues.
C.Pictures.
D.Requirements.
3、Why did the author refuse to sell the Australian the bell?
A.She thought he was strange.
B.His bid was not high enough.
C.Someone else had already bought it.
D.Delivering it to him was troublesome.
4、After receiving the complaint about the radio, the author ______.
A.felt deeply sorry
B.explained patiently
C.returned the money
D.apologized immediately
5、Why does the author sell used stuff via eBay?
A.She needs money badly.
B.She is an environmentalist.
C.She is interested in marketing.
D.She wants their stories to be continued.
25.(10分)The hemlock(铁杉) trees along the Wappinger Creek, New York, look healthy. However, scientist Gary Lovett says the white balls which provide protection for the bugs are created by a tiny insect. It’s hard to believe the tiny bug could kill a tree. However, trees can end up with millions and millions of the pests. When there are that many, it ends up killing the tree.
The bug from East Asia is slowly killing trees across the USA.The trouble-making bug is just one of many invasive(入侵的) pests that have slipped into the United States. They can hurt other living things in their new home.
Many invasive pests arrive on wooden pallets piled inside shipping containers. They support and separate goods, and keep them from sliding around. Invasive pests often tunnel into the pallets. How can we stop pests from riding on pallets? Lovett says new rules are needed. The companies that make pallets don’t want more rules. Congress has added an amendment(修正案) in the 2018 Farm Bill to try and prevent this problem. However, Lovett is not hopeful it will make much of a difference. Pallets are checked by inspectors. Many are sprayed with bug-killing pesticide. “I believe in the system,” said Brent McClendon, president of The National Wooden Pallet and Container Association. He also said shipping containers are checked very carefully.
Still, each year 13 million containers are shipped to the U.S. Each is full of wooden pallets. Lovett says: “Inspectors can’t possibly check everything. All it takes are a few
bad pallets; we shou ld get rid of wooden pallets.” He believes pallets should be made of plastic or eco-composite wood. Eco-composite wood is a mix of wood fiber and plastic. Insects cannot hide into it. One problem is that these choices cost more. They may be worth the extra money, though. Invasive pests cost the U.S. $5 billion a year. Trees don’t just die in forests. They also die in cities and our yards. Then, they need to be replaced. That costs money, too.
1、All the statements are TRUE except that ________.
A.pesticide has been applied to bug-killing
B.the companies making pallets don’t want more rules
C.invasive pests hide in pallets used in shipping
D.invasive pests are native to Wappinger Creek
2、What can we infer from the passage?
A.Bugs won’t bother the tree if just in few numbers.
B.Bugs ruin the shipping goods slowly.
C.Bugs can be easily spotted by eyes.
D.Bugs cover trees with white soft balls for protection.
3、Why does Gary Lovett want to get rid of wooden pallets?
A.Because insects mostly die in them.
B.Because they are the major pest carriers.
C.Because they are not worth extra money.
D.Because plastic pallets are eco-friendly.
4、What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.Congress contributes a lot to dealing with invasive pests.
B.Effective measures have stopped the pest invasion.
C.Invasive pests are harming plants in the USA.
D.Ecosystem in the USA is poorly damaged by invasive woods.

29、Dear Ada,
We haven't seen each other for a long time since we last parted. I miss you very much and thus I am writing this letter to tell you something about my high school life.
I entered senior high school in September. I feel that the new life is very exciting and full of challenges. Facing many excellent students, I have a lot of pressure to study, which urges me to study hard. I plan to set new study goals for me to work for and improve my way of learning. My teachers and classmates are all very kind and we help each other. Getting along well with them is an important part of my personal development. I have decided to try my best to learn a lot from them. In my spare time I will actively take part in different kinds of school activities, I think they can make me get fully developed.
Give my best regards to your parents and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Best wishes!
Yours sincerely,
Li Jin。
