13、Before I even started school, people felt that I was not going to________At the age of four, I started speech lessons because even I could not speak well enough to be understood.
First grade was a struggle. I not only had difficulty speaking, but I was expected to learn to read and I just couldn't do it. My parents grew more and more frustrated. They bought books and offered great rewards if I could read one of them from start to finish to them. Well, with my speech problems and now my reading problems, I did not like to do reading and so refused to do it whenever possible.
Second grade was not much better. It was in the second grade that the teacher decided that I needed special education. I remember the days of taking the physical exams. However, after all that, they decided that I did not qualify for special education.
It was in third grade that a new school was built close to where I lived. I remember going there with my parents and helping to get the school ready so that we could transfer(转学). It was a happy day that we started school at Vandalia. However, things did not get better as my parent expected.
It was now time for fifth grade. Mrs. Wakefield was my teacher, and if ever there was a teacher that deserved a gold star, it was her. She did not make me feel upset. Instead, she helped me in so many ways and built my self-confidence so that I actually did believe that I could do something special. And that is just what I did.
For the past 2 years, I have been a fifth grade teacher. Because of Mrs. Wakefield's influence in my life, I am now encouraging students who have had difficulties in their lives to believe that they can overcome and become someone. I have won a large number of awards but I know that all of them belong to one fifth grade teacher who believed in me and challenged me to be all that I could be.
I still have a class picture of her with her fifth grade class hanging on the wall of my office, encouraging other teachers to reach out to their students.

I went to the rock gym and climbed all the time, and everyone kept telling me “just climb more and you’ll get better.” “Well, however, nothing I did was working. It felt like the harder I worked at it, the less progress I w as actually making. In fact, I felt so comfortable with them that one afternoon I just came out and simply asked for help. There is a saying, “If you want a shortcut to success, find someone who is successful and ask them to show you how to get there.” It is true in just a few short months. I learned far more from these climbing professionals than what I had learned during the previous(之前的) years of struggle on my own. My climbing changed…my strength, skills, mental toughness, formwork, confidence, everything.
I was no longer the average climber that no one knew. I discovered that climbing like the experts is more about working smarter, not harder(no training 7 days a week). What I discovered is so simple that, looking back now, I realized the
bi ggest thing holding me back from being a better climber and having more fun doing it…was Me!

17、A gift card is a card that is issued(发行) by a store. These cards are big money makers for stores. One reason is that when gift-card holders go to the store, they often see other things to buy,and they spend more money than the gift card is worth.Unused cards are another reason.Stores make millions of dollars because large numbers of people never use their cards. They either lose them, forget about them,or decide that it's not worth the effort.
Gift card are becoming very popular in many countries around the world. In the US,they are one of the most popular kinds of gifts. Why?People love the convenience—gift cards are easy to buy and easy to use, either in the store or online. The recipient can choose his or her own gift, and the giver does not have to worry about finding just the right thing.
Receiving a gift card, however,is not the same as receiving a gift.A real gift is a better reminder of the person who gave
it.The message of a real gift is more likely to be,"I spend some time trying to find the right gift for you because I care about you."Often a gift card does not send the same message as a real gift.It may seem to say,"I was in a hurry.I didn't have time to think about what you would really like."
In today's world, gift cards are certainly convenient. However, they can make us forget the real purpose of giving
gifts, which is to build a closer connection between the gift-giver and the gift-recipient.

C.I couldn’t find the right gift for you.D.I didn’t have time to buy you a real gift.

Last Friday afternoon, all the teachers and students in the school watched the video about
Huang Xuhua –the father of China’s nukes.
He was born in a rich family. In order to make our country stronger, he gave up the chance to be a doctor, but tried to
learn how to make/build the nukes. Although the conditions were very hard at that time., he concentrated on studying the knowledge of making/ building the nukes.
To protect the national security, he used to conceal/concealed his identity. For about 30 years, he was unknown for others. And now he still keeps working hard even if he is over 90 years old.(And now he doesn’t stop working/struggling even if he is over90 years old)
