A
On the first day of the 11th grade, our new math teacher Mr. Washington asked me to go to the blackboard to do a math problem. I told him that I couldn't do it. He asked, “Why not?”I paused, and then I said, “Because I'm educable mentally retarded (可教育智能迟滞).”
He came from behind his desk and looked at me. “Don't ever say that again. Someone's_opinion_of_you_does_not_have_to_
become_your_reality,”he said.
It was a very special moment for me. Doctors said that I was educable mentally retarded in the fifth grade, and I was put back into the fourth grade. When I was in the eighth grade, I failed again.
But Mr. Washington changed my life. This person always gave students the feeling that he had high expectations of them, and then all of the students did their best to live up to what those expectations were. He often said, “Y ou have greatness within you.”
One day, I caught up with him in the parking place and said, “Mr. Washington, is there greatness within me, sir?”
He said, “Yes, Mr. Brown.”
“But what about the fact that I failed in English, math and history? What about that, sir? I'm slower than most kids.”
“It doesn't matter. It just means that you have to wor k harder. Your grades don't determine who you are or what you can produce in your life.”
“I want to buy my mother a house.”
“It is possible, Mr. Brown. You can do that.” And he turned to walk away.
“Mr. Washington?”
“What do you want now?”
“Uh, I'm the one, sir. One day you're going to hear my name. I'm the one, sir.”
School was a real struggle for me. Mr. Washington put many demands on me. He made me believe that I could do it. At the end of that year, I was on the honor roll for the first time in my life.
Years later, I produced five programs on public television. When one of my programs was shown on the educational television channel, I had some friends call him. I was sitting by the phone waiting when he called me. He said, “May I speak to Mr. Brown, please?”
“Oh, Mr. Washington, is that you?”
“Yes, it's me. You were the one, weren't you?”
“Yes, sir, I was.”

21.What does Mr. Washington mean by saying “Someone's opinion of you does not have to become your reality”?
A.You needn't have the same opinion as others.
B.You should believe what other people say.
C.What other people say about you may not be correct.
D.The doctor made a mistake.

22. What happened to the author at last?
A.He entered a good university.
B.He earned much honor.
C.He got a good job.
D.He made television programs.

由文中“Y ears later, I produced five programs on public television ”可知,作者最终成为了一名制作电视节目的人。

23.In the passage, the author implies that____________.
A.people shouldn't believe what doctors say
B.no one can be successful with hard work and confidence
C.no one is really educable mentally retarded
D.a good teacher can change a student's life

24.The best title for the passage would be“__________”.
A.Don't believe others B.I succeeded at last
C.My best teacher D.I am the one

文中反复出现I'm the one.

B
No one has enough, but everyone has all there is. We each have just twentyfour hours in a day. Time is not our problems, but what we do with the limited time we have is the issue. Many people spend their days on dozens of activities, but achieve very little because they aren't concentrating on right things. The Pareto Principle, also known as the 80:20 Rule shows us that typically eighty percent of unfocused effort generates only twenty percent of the results. The remaining eighty percent of the results are achieved with only twenty percent of the effort. To effectively manage your time, you need to change where you are spending your time. We all have the same amount of time every day. How you spend your time is how you
spend your life. Here are time management strategies, which may be helpful.
Learn to say no
Politely say no should become a habit. Saying no frees up time for the things that are most important.
Make a “todo”list
List the tasks that need to be done in order of their importance. Save other less important things for when you have time.
Minimize interruption(打扰)
Plan ahead. Think through projects. Look for ways to_“block”interruptions. For example, close your door, don't answer the phone or work in a different space.
Combine several activities
Try to do several activities at one time. While going to school, listen to taped notes. This allows up to an hour or two a day of good study review. While showering, make a mental list of the things. Above all, be creative, and let it work for you.

25.According to the Pareto Principle, we can know that ____________.
A.people can't achieve a lot even though they concentrate on right things
B.people should focus more effort on right and important things and finish them first
C.people are certain to succeed if they spend twenty percent of their time
D.eighty percent of effort spent on one matter is useless

26.According to the passage, if you want to do several things on Sunday, you should____________.
A.do them while listening to the music
B.do all of them at one time
C.do the most important one first
D.put some of them off till next Monday

27.The underlined word “block” in the passage means “____________ ”.
A.accept B.prevent
C.arrange D.defend

28.What would be the best title of the passage?
A.Time Management
B.The Pareto Principle
C.How to Make a “Todo”List
D.Time and Habits

C
Many people say dolphins are very intelligent. They seem to be able to think, understand, and learn things quickly. But are they smart like humans or more than cats or dogs? Dolphins use their brains differently from people. But scientists say dolphin intelligence and human intelligence are similar in some ways. How?
•Fact 1: Talk to me
Like humans, every dolphin has its own “name”. The name is a special whistle.
Each dolphin chooses a specific whistle for itself, usually by its first birthday. Actu ally, scientists think dolphins, like people, “talk” to each other about a lot of things, such as their age, their feelings, or finding food. And, like humans, dolphins use a system of sounds and body language to communicate. But understanding their conve rsations is not easy for humans. No one speaks “dolphin” yet, but some scientists are trying to learn.
•Fact 2: Let's play
Dolphins are also social animals. They live in groups, and they often join others from different groups to play games and have fun—just like people. In fact, playing together is something only intelligent animals do.
•Fact 3: Fishermen's helper
Dolphins and humans are similar in another way: both make plans to get something they want. In the seas of southern Brazil, for example, dolphins use an interesting strategy to get food. When fish are near a boat, dolphins show signs to the fishermen to put their nets in the water. Using this method, the men can catch a lot of fish. What is the advantage for the dolphins in doing so? They get to eat some of the fish.

29.What does a dolphin often use as its “name”?
A.A body language. B.A special whistle.
C.Its feeling. D.Its age.

30.Why do dolphins join others from different groups?
A.To learn to “talk”.
B.To meet their families.
C.To play games.
D.To find food.

31.How do dolphins help fishermen catch fish?
A.By showing signs to the fishermen.
B.By leading the fish into the net.
C.By following fishing boats.
D.By playing with other fish.

32.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Dolphins are smarter than humans.
B.Dolphins make friends with humans.
C.Dolphins teach humans to speak “dolphin”.
D.Dolphins and humans are similar in some ways.

D
Facial expressions carry meaning that is determined by situations and relationships. For example, in American culture (文化) the smile is in general an expression of pleasure. Yet it also has other uses. A woman's smile at a police officer does not carry the same meaning as the smile she gives to a young child. A smile may show love or politeness. It can also hide true feelings. It often causes confusion (困惑) across cultures. For example, many people in Russia consider smiling at strangers in public to be unusual and even improper. Yet many Americans smile freely at strangers in public places (although this is less common in big cities). Some Russians believe that Americans smile in the wrong places; some Americans believe that Russians don't smile enough. In Southeast Asian cultures, a smile is frequently used to cover painful feelings. Vietnamese people may tell a sad story but end the story with a smile.
Our faces show emotions (情感), but we should not attempt to “read” people from another culture as we would “read” someone from our own culture. The fact that members of one culture do not express their emotions as openly as do members of another does not mean that they do not experience emotions. Rather, there are cultural differences in the amount of facial expressiveness permitted. For example, in public and in formal situations many Japanese do not show their emotions as freely as Americans do. When with friends, Japanese and Americans seem to show their emotions similarly.
It is difficult to generalize about Americans and facial expressiveness because of personal and cultural differences in the United States. People from certain cultural backgrounds in the United States seem to be more facially expressive than others. The key is to try not to judge people whose ways of showing emotion are different. If we judge according to our own cultural habits, we may make the mistake of “reading” the other pers on incorrectly.

33.The author mentions the smile of the Vietnamese to prove that smile can____________.
A.show friendliness to strangers
B.be used to hide true feelings
C.be used in the wrong places
D.show personal habits

根据文章第一段中的“It can also hide true feelings. It often causes confusion across culture.”

34.What should we do before attempting to “read” people?
A.Learn about their relations with others.
B.Understand their cultural backgrounds.
C.Find out about their past experience.
D.Figure out what they will do next.

根据文章最后一段中的“The key is to try not to judge people whose ways of showing emotion are different. If we judge according to our own cultural habits, we may make the mistake of ‘reading’the other person incorrectly.”

35.What would be the best title for the text?
A.Cultural Differences
B.Smiles and Relationship
C.Facial Expressiveness
D.Habits and Emotions
