The Harm of Smoking
Smoking, which may be a pleasure for some people, is a series of discomforts for their fellows. Medicai scientists have expressed their concern about the effect of smoking on the health not only of
those who are smoking but also of those who live in the air polluted by tobacco smoke. And studies show that non-smokers suffer more than the smokers themselves.
A great number of students have joined in trying to persuade the university to forbid smoking. Smoking is not allowed in theatres, cinemas and in other public places. Therefore,smoking must be forbidden in our classrooms.
Although many people have passed away for having smoked a lot and we call on people to give up smoking, yet many more will turn down what we say every day. I think it more important to call on the smoker to use good judgment and to show concern for others.
吸烟的危害
吸烟可能对某些⼈来说是⼀件愉快的事情，但却为他们的伙伴带来⼀系列的不适。

Every day, it is easy to see advertisements all around us. Look around. How many different advertisements can you see? Often products show the name of the company that made them. This is a popular form of adver-
rising. The special picture or symbol, i.e. logo, appears on many different products. When you see a logo, it is hard to forget that product or company.
Many people buy a product because it is made by a certain company. In fact, some people only buy a product of a famous company. They think it proves that they are fashionable and have good taste.
It is common to find advertisements on TV or radio. Most advertisements are very short for people to remember. Nike,for example, has a simple slogan used all around the world:”Just do it”. Advertisements often use funny situations as well. It is easy to remember an entertaining ad.
All advertisements are designed to make people buy a product. An advertisement for a soft drink, for example,might show a group of trendy young people who are having fun. The young people are all drinking the soft drink. Adverr isers are saying to you, “Why don’t you buy it and be like these people? You can be young, modern and trendy, too.”
You might think that advertisements do not affect you, but the next time you buy a soft drink,
ask yourself: Why am I buying this particular product?

How to Become a Successful Speaker of English
Some students often say “My spoken English is poor.”Others say “Speaking English is verst harcl for me; so no need to try.”This is what we call “negative thinking.” In fact, a lot of Chinese students can speak good English, but they don’t. Their problem is a linguistic inferiority complex, in other words, they worry that they won’t be able to speak as well as other people, so they feel inferior in their presence.This sickness has a cure, that is, building self-confidence to get rid of shyness.
Here are some suggestions for you.
The first thing you can do is to speak English with good friends, with whom you can speak freely without feeling shy.
Then, try your ability with teachers and foreigners if possible. Don’t be afraid of mistakes and don’t be afraid to ask questions about things you don’t know, as this is the way to acq uire knowledge.
Thirdly, try to think in English and leave out mindtranslation. Not until you have done so can you be said to have a better command of spoken English.
Fourthly, do more reading to expand vocabulary and learn to use the new words in your speech as much as possible.
Lastly, don’t get angry with yourself when you come across something you cannot express in English or the words you want to use suddenly escape your memory. This is unavoidable in the learning process. Just keep constant practice.For example, in CET-SET, a number of candidates failed the first time and after half a year’s practice, they succeeded in the second round.
