I worked in a small drug store when I was very small. I worked long and hard because that was my father’s store. I treasured my lunch breaks, not for the food or the rest, but for reading comic books about superheroes. And I could read comic books only during my lunch breaks.
Now I close my eyes and think back, I know what I wanted to be when I was a small kid—a superhero! Superman, Batman, Spider-Man and Iron Man were some of my heroes. In all of the comic books that I read, there were two patterns.
First, there was always a battle between good and evil. The battle was always tough. No matter how strong or how many powers the superhero had, evil could almost defeat him. Second, the superhero was never paid for his contribution to society. Superman made money as Clark Kent, a newspaper reporter. Batman made money as Bruce Wayne, a rich businessman. Spider-Man made money as Peter Parker, a photographer. Iron Man made money as Tony Stark, a rich scientist. None of them was paid for keeping peace or helping others.
The real superheroes don’t get paid for what they do for society!
I clean the local park with my friends every weekend. I help cheer up kids in the hospital. I send food to disabled people. I don’t get paid for doing these in my free time. It’s correct to be fairly compensated but I simply choose not to. I feel my dream has come true!
Volunteering and helping people without getting paid is what superheroes do. You can be a superhero, too.

D .By choosing the right job.
52.What’s the best title for the text?( ) A .V olunteering is fun. B .Comic books and my childhood. C .Be a superhero.
D .Do superheroes get paid?
In 1957, Max Vernon Mathews wrote the first computer program called Music, which enabled a computer to create sound and play it back. He was then working as an engineer at Bell Laboratories in New Jersey. It enabled a large IBM computer to play a seventeen
second piece of music he had written.
The computer was so slow that it took an hour to play the seventeen second piece of music. So Mathews moved the work to a tape player to play the music at a normal speed. He later said that the sound quality of the musical notes was not great, but the technical importance of the music was huge.
The science fiction writer Arthur C .Clarke visited Bell Laboratories in the 1960s. He heard a computer “sing” the song Daisy Bell on devices (设备) and learned about the programs developed by Mathews and other engineers. Clarke noted this technology in his book 2001: A Space Odyssey, which was later made into a movie.
Mathews continued creating other versions of the Music program. He became interested in how computers could help musicians outside recording studios. The Groove program he developed was the first computer program made for live performances.
He also developed an electronic device he called the Radio Baton, which looks like two drum sticks. It enables the user to control the speed and sound levels of orchestral music (管弦乐) played on a computer by moving the two sticks on a special electronic surface.
Mathews said he believed modern musicians were not making full use of the power of computer music. He said a violin always sounds like a violin. But with his Music, the way a violin sounds is unlimited. He did not want computer sounds to replace live music, but he hoped computers would one day be considered serious instruments.
53.Why did Clarke visit Bell Laboratories?( ) A .To make his book into a movie. B .To help Mathews develop Music. C .To satisfy his own curiosity about music. D .To gather materials for his literary creation.
54.What electronic music tools did Mathews create?( ) A .Something used to record live music. B .Something used to create special sound. C .Something used to improve computer music. D .Something used to create computer music. 55.What does Mathews think of his Music?( ) A .It is more pleasant to the ear. B .It can help make more sounds. C .It will finally replace the violin. D .It is more popular than live music.
56.What can we learn about Mathews?(
) A .He is the father of computer music. B .His creation succeeded on the first try. C .He wrote Music to replace instruments. D .He changed the functions of computers.
You often can choose a private setting when you browse(浏览) the internet. But be forewarned: It may not afford nearly as much privacy as you expect. That’s the finding of a new study.
Major web browsers, such as Google’s Chrome and Apple’s Safari, often a private-browsing option. It’s sometimes referred to as “incognito.” This option lets you surf the Internet browser and saves a record into its history of each page that you visited. And what sites you visit won’t affect the suggestions your browser makes the next time you’re filling out an online form.
Many people believe----incorrectly--- that the incognito setting protects them more broadly. Most believe it even after reading a web browser’s explanation of the incognito mode.
For instance, a new study had 460 people read web browsers’ descriptions of private browsing. Each person read one of 13 descriptions. Then the participants answered questions about how private they thought their browsing would be while using this tool. The volunteers didn’t understand the incognito mode. This was true no matter which browser explanation they had read. The researchers reported their findings on April 26 at the 2018 World Wide Web Conference in Lyon, France.
More than half of the volunteers thought that if they logged into a Google account through a private window, Google wouldn’t keep a record of their search history. Not true. And about one in every four participants thought private browsing hid their device’s IP address. That’s wrong, too.
Blase Ur was one of the study’s authors. He’s an expert in computer security and privacy in Illinois at the University of Chicago. Companies could clear up this confusion by giving better explanations of the incognito mode, his team says. For example, the browsers should avoid vague (模糊).The web browser Opera, for instance, promises users that “your secrets are safe.” Nope Firefox encourages users to “browse like no one’s watching.” In fact, someone might be. (If you’d like to know more about the research information, please click here .)
57.The researchers did the study with the aim of ______.( ) A .checking the safety of browsers of leading companies B .finding users’ knowledge about private browsing policy C .tracking young web users’ browsing habits D .testing a new tool to judge the Internet
58.The “incognito” mode is believed to be able to ______.( ) A .record one’s passwords B .give a warning of insecure links C .help hide one’s past browsing history D .access one’s favorite websites quickly
59.Where is the article probably from ______.( ) A .a text book B .a newspaper C .a magazine
D .the Internet
60.The last paragraph is written to ______.( ) A .report a new finding B .put forward a suggestion C .introduce a web browser D .correct a misunderstanding
