阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

A
Dear Michelle,
My Dad hates my Mom. He tells me that she is a liar and that I should not trust her. Of course, they are divorced but they have “joint custody” (共同监护). What a joke! I am 15, my brother is nine, and we have a life of hell, frankly.
We live one week on and one week off. This was the brilliant idea of both of my parents, which was fair to them but ruining my life. I cannot get away from his voice and his putting my mom down. Sometimes I think about running away.
A Hopeless Ant
Dear Hopeless Ant,
First, thank you for trusting me with your problem. If all you said is correct, then there are several things that you can and should do to help yourself, your brother and your parents.
You need a family counselor (指导老师). Such a person could listen to each family member alone and then meet together to talk about the situation.
If refused, you need to talk to a counselor in your school. You need to be heard, and you need an adult who will listen. A school counselor can organize a meeting with your parents.
Perhaps you need to write to your mother. Writing things down allows people to go over it more than one time.
I cannot imagine that she will stand passively by and do nothing at all to help once she reads how you feel. Your father needs a letter as well. He may not realize the destructive effect that it has on his children.
Lastly, have a plan in mind when all else fails that is not self-destructive. Life passes very quickly, sweetheart, and you will grow up and have your own life.
Until then, you need to keep yourself safe. Never doubt that it will get better. Write back and let me know how everything is going.
Michelle

A pet has become known throughout his neighborhood as “Denis the Evil”, after stealing more than one hundred garments (衣服) from his nearby homes and gardens. The real-life cat burglar has a weakness for stealing and has taken all kinds of things, which he takes home to his embarrassed owner Lesley Newman, aged 49. Over a crime record of 18 months Denis’s stolen goods include a bath towel, a belt, a football, five paintbrushes, a pair of slippers, a shirt, a doll and a pair of gloves. Victims of the two-year-old black and white cat often turn up at Mrs. Newman’s home in Luton, when their belongings go missing.
The first theft was recorded just a week after he was let out of the house for the first time. His largest prize is a bath towel which he dragged through the streets and his most expensive is a Fred Perry polo short. On one occasion he stole a woman’s shoes from a garden in a neighboring road and returned a week later to take the other one. Many of the things have fallen off washing lines as they often have clothes pegs (挂钩) still attached.
Mrs. Newman,an accounts assistant, has built up two large boxes filled with Denis’ stolen things which she keeps in case anyone arrives to get them. She said, “We have had him since he was six weeks old. I would say he has taken well over 100 things now,so I have started collecting them up and if people are looking for something, I tell them to knock on my door. I have never tried to stop his behavior, I would much rather he brought objects into the house than dead animals. He normally leaves them outside the front door but some of the time he will bring them up to my bed while I am asleep.”
Vicky Halls, a cat behaviorist, said, “There are so many different theories on why cats steal, but I think it’s a basic hunting instinct (本能). Cats steal all sorts of things and bring them in and carry items as if they were prey (猎物). It could be the feel of certain items in their mouths that they like, which could be why certain things are taken time and time again.”
59.Why do Mrs. Newman’s neighbors often go to her house in Luton?
A. Because they want to play with Denis.
B. Because they are Mrs. Newman’s good friends.
C. Because they want to make a crime record of Denis.
D. Because they want to find their lost belongings.
60.What is Mrs. Newman’s attitude towards the cat?
A. Ashamed.
B. Calm.
C. Negative.
D. Worried.
61.What can be learned from the passage?
A. The cat burglar is only two years old.
B. The cat’s stolen goods are mostly foods.
C. Mrs. Newman encourages the cat to steal things.
D. Vicky Halls has no patience with the cat.
62.What is the purpose of writing the passage?
A. To call on people to protect animals.
B. To accuse Mrs. Newman.
C. To introduce a funny cat.
D. To promote cat behavior research.

Growers around the world are using new methods to grow grapes to make wine. They use natural and organic methods to control harmful insects and weeds instead of using chemicals. Now, a winery in Canada has adopted a natural way to control its grapevines (葡萄藤). The Featherstone Winery is in southern Ontario. The grapevines, like other plants, need to be cut every year.
Cutting grapevines must be done very carefully. Only a targeted area of leaves is removed from the lower part of the vines to help the grapes grow better. But at the Featherstone Winery, no man or machine does the cutting. Instead, the job is done by 40 little wooly lambs.
David Johnson owns the vineyard (葡萄园). He says he learned about using lambs while visiting wineries in New Zealand. The young lambs are perfectly designed to do the job. They eat the grape leaves on the lower parts of the vine. But they are not tall enough to reach the grapes. They only weigh about 22 kilograms, so they do not beat down the soil. And their waste makes good organic fertilizer. In addition, using the lambs costs much less than hiring workers to cut the vines for seven weeks in summer. And when the cutting is done in August, the lambs become tasty dishes.
Mr. Johnson says he had a difficult time finding enough lambs to do the job. There are about 50 million lambs in New Zealand. But there are not nearly as many in Ontario. Also, some organic pesticides (杀虫剂) are harmful to lambs. And the lambs must be watched to make sure they do not eat too much of the grapevines.
David Johnson says the lambs help him carry out his environmental ideas about farming. They are lovely and peaceful and he likes having them in his vineyard. People visiting the vineyard also enjoy watching the lambs do their job.
63.Farmers who grow grapes with natural and organic methods _________.
A. don't cut grapevines every year
B. don't use chemicals to control harmful insects and weeds

64.In order to help the grapes grow better, growers _________.
A. only have to remove the dead leaves
B. need to remove a specific area of leaves
C. shouldn't remove any part of the plants
D. should let little lambs do the cutting
65.Paragraph 4 is mainly about _________.
A. the future of getting lambs to do the cutting
B. the worries about using organic pesticides
C. the ways to get lambs to do the cutting
D. the problems related to lambs doing the cutting
66.We can infer from the passage that David Johnson _________.
A. owns several wineries in Canada
B. buys lambs from New Zealand
C. is concerned about protecting the environment
D. loves keeping lambs instead of farming

In her new book, “The Smartest Kids in the World”, Amanda Ripley, an investigative journalist, tells the story of Tom, a high-school student from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, who decides to spend his senior year in Wroclaw, Poland. Poland is a surprising educational success story in the past decade, the country raised students’ test scores from significantly below average to well above it. Polish kids have now outscored American kids in math and science, even though Poland spends, on average, less than half as much per student as the United States does. One of the most striking differences between the high school Tom attended in Gettysburg and the one he ends up at in Wroclaw is that the latter has no football team or teams of any kind.
That American high schools spend more time and money on sports than on math is an old complaint. In December, when the latest Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) results are announced, it’s safe to predict that American high-school students will once again show their limited skills in math and reading, outscored not just by students in Poland but also by students in places like China, Finland, Singapore, and Japan. Meanwhile, they will have played some very exciting football games, which will have been breathlessly written up in their hometown papers.
Why does this situation continue? Well, for one thing, kids like it. And for another, according to Ripley, parents seem to like the arrangement, too. She describes a tour she took of a school in Washington D.C., which costs thirty thousand dollars a year. The tour leader —a mother with three children in the school —was asked about the school’s flaws (瑕疵). When she said that the math program was weak, none of the parents taking the tour reacted. When she said that the football program was weak, the parents suddenly became concerned. “Really?” one of them asked worriedly, “What do you mean?”
One of the ironies of the situation is that sports show what is possible. American kids’performance on the field shows just how well they can do when expectations are high. It’s too bad that their test scores show the same thing.
67.Tom decides to spend his senior year in Poland because _________.
A. he intends to improve his scores
B. Polish kids are better at learning
C. sports are not supported at schools in Gettysburg
D. he wants to be the smartest kid in the world
68.According to Paragraph 2, we know that _________.
A. PISA plays a very important role in America
B. little time is spent on sports in Japanese schools
C. American students do better in both math and sports
D. too much importance is placed on sports in America
69.The underlined sentence in the last paragraph means _________.
A. low expectations result in American students’ poor PISA performance
B. high expectations push up American students’ academic performance
C. American students’ academic performance worries their parents a lot
D. lacking practice contributes to American students’ average performance
70.The purpose of this article is to _________.
A. compare Polish schools with those in America
B. call on American schools to learn from the Polish model
C. draw public attention to a weakness in American school tradition
D. explain what is wrong with American schools and provide solutions

Dear students,
With the purpose of enriching our life during the winter holiday, we will have a singing competition for pop songs on January 28th in the hall of our school.
There’s no limit to the pop songs, no matter what kind of language it is. What’s more, we will give adequate rewards to the best singers and there will be a ceremony for the winners. Each of you is warmly welcomed and you should have a full preparation for it. Why not try your best and show us your talent and difference?
We hope that all the students can cherish this good opportunity and don’t forget to sign up before January 10th at the Students’ Union.
