The zebra belongs to the horse family. One of nature’s great mysteries is why
the zebra has stripes . One theory is that the stripes help the zebra cool down.
On hot days the black stripes get a lot hotter than the white area of the zebra and
under the black stripes there are special layers of fat for protection. Hot air then
rises off the black stripes, forcing colder air down around the white areas, cooling
the zebra down. This, however, is just a kind of theory. The stripes can also confuse
predators(食肉动物,掠夺者)when zebras stay with other animals in great numbers.
Zebras have excellent hearing and eyesight and can run at speeds of up to 56 kilometers per hour. They also have a powerful kick that can cause serious injury to a predator, like a lion, or an African wild dog. Usually the lead male of the herd stays at the back of the group to defend against predators if necessary, while the females and youngsters escape danger.
Zebras are herbivores that feed only on plants and live mostly by eating grasses, although they also might eat a bit on the leaves and stems(茎) of bushes. They eat grasses for many hours each day, using their strong teeth. Spending so much time chewing wears the zebras’ teeth down, so their teeth keep growing all their lives. As the dry season arrives and the grasses die back, zebra herds travel to find more food and water holes for drinking. Most zebras have no specific territories. They travel from place to place, never staying in one area very long.

A Swedish man was dug out alive after being snowed in his car on a forest track for two months with no food, police and local media reported on Saturday.
The 45-year-old from southern Sweden was found on Friday, February17, too weak to say more than a few words.
He was found not far from the city of Umea in the north of Sweden by snowmobilers who thought they had come across a ruined car until they dug their way to a window and saw movement inside.
The man, who was lying in the back seat in a sleeping bag, said he had been in the car since December 19.
“Just incredible that he’s alive considering that he had no food, but also since it’s been really cold for some time after Christmas.” a rescue team member told regional daily Vasterbottens- Kuriren, which broke the news.
Ebbe Nyberg, duty officer at the Umea police, said police saw no reason to doubt that the man had been stuck in the car for a very long time.
“We would not make up something like this. The rescue services were on site too and saw the same as us.” he told Vasterbottens-Kuriren.
Umea University Hospital, where the man is recovering after being rescued by police and a rescue team, said in a statement he was doing well considering the circumstances.
Doctors at the hospital said humans would normally be able to survive for about four weeks without food. Besides eating snow, the man probably survived by going into a dormant-like(休眠似的) state, physician Stefan Branth told Vasterbottens-Kuriren.
“A bit like a bear that hibernates. Humans can do that.” he said. “He probably had a body temperature of around 31 degrees which the body adjusted to. Due to the low temperature, not much energy was used up.”
“Why the man ended up under the snow in the forest remains unknown,” police said.

An idea that started in Seattle's public library has spread throughout America
and beyond. The concept is simple: help to build a sense of community in a city by
getting everyone to read the same book at the same time.
In addition to encouraging reading as a pursuit (追求) to be enjoyed by all,
the program allows strangers to communicate by discussing the book on the bus, as
well as promoting reading as an experience to be shared in families and schools.
The idea came from Seattle librarian Nancy Pearl who launched (发起)the "If All
of Seattle Read the Same Book " project in 1998. Her original program used author
visits, study guides and book discussion groups to bring people together with a book,
but the idea has since expanded to many other American cities, and even to Hongkong.
In Chicago, the mayor(市长)appeared on television to announce the choice of
To Kill a Mockingbird as the first book in the "One Book, One Chicago" program. As
a result, reading clubs and neighbourhood groups sprang up around the city. Across
the US, stories emerged of parents and children reading to each other at night and
strangers chatting away on the bus about plot and character.
The only problem arose in New York , where local readers could not decide on
one book to represent the huge and diverse population. This may show that the idea
works best in medium-sized cities or large towns, where a greater sense of unity(一
致)can be achieved .Or it may show that New Yorkers rather missed the point ,putting
all their energy and passion into the choice of the book rather than discussion about
a book itself.
Ultimately, as Nancy points out, the level of success is not measured by how
many people read a book, but by how many people are enriched by the process, or have
enjoyed speaking to someone with whom they would not otherwise have shared a word.
41. What is the purpose of the project launched by Nancy?
A. To invite authors to guide readers.
B. To encourage people to read and share.
C. To involve people in community service.
D. To promote the friendship between cities.
42. Why was it difficult for New Yorkers to carry out the project?
A. They had little interest in reading.
B. They were too busy to read a book.
C. They came from many different backgrounds
D.T hey lacked support from the local government
43. According to the passage, where would the project be more easily carried out?
A. In large communities with little sense of unity
B. In large cities where libraries are far from home
C. In medium-sized cities with a diverse population
D .In large towns where agreement can be quickly reached
44. The underlined words “shared a word” in Paragraph 5 proba bly mean
A. exchanged ideas with each other
B. discussed the meaning of a word
C. gained life experience
D. used the same language
45. According to Nancy, the degree of students of the project is judged by________
A. the careful selection of a proper book
B. the growing popularity of the writers
C. the number of people who benefit from reading.
D. the number of books that each person reads.

“…Now, I remember the first real workout (训练) I had. Eight miles away from my home village in Austria there was a gymnasium, and I rode there on a bicycle and trained for half an hour, because they said that after half an hour you should stop, otherwise, your body would get really sore (疼痛). But after half an hour I looked at my body, and nothing had happened. So I said, ‘I’d better work out for another half an hour.’So I lifted some more. My strength didn’t improve; I didn’t see the muscles pop out or anything like that, so I trained for another half an hour. Then I left the gym and rode home, but after the first mile, I got numb (麻木)—I couldn’t feel the handle of the bicycle anymore—and I fell off the bike. I got up and tried it again. After another few yards. I fell off again. And I tried it three or four mo re times and couldn’t ride my bicycle because my body was so numb and my legs felt like noodles.
The next morning when I got up, my body was so sore that I couldn’t even lift my arms to comb my hair. But I learn a very important lesson—that pain means progress. Pain is progress. Each time my muscles were sore from a workout, I knew that they were growing and that they were getting stronger…”

III. 写作(共两节,满分40分)
第一节基础写作(共1小题,满分15分)
范文:
第二节读写任务(共1小题;满分25分)
范文:
Things that bring us pain make us grow
Arnold Schwarzenegger described his first training as a weightlifter and drew the conclusion that it is through pain that we strengthen ourselves and make progress.
From his story, we know that we shouldn’t be afraid of pain and that things that bring us pain make us grow. If he hadn’t exercised more than usual and had given up, his muscle would not have grown much stronger.
His experience reminds me of my first year in senior high school. I entered my name for the 3,000-metre race in the sports meet and started training for it. But a few days later, my legs were so sore that I wanted to quit. However, with my classmates’ encouragement, I picked up my courage again and went on training. As a result, I took the first place in the race and was highly praised by the school.
Many an example shows that we shouldn’t be afraid of painful experiences which will help us grow stronger both physically and mentally.。
