1. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.,

句中deeply rooted in the American dream为过去分词作定语,相当于一个定语从句that is deeply rooted in the American dream。
其中a dream 与root之间存在被动关系,并且动作已经完成。
过去分词作定语表示一个被动的和完成的动作。
例句:
The meeting held yesterday was of great importance.
昨天召开的会议很重要。
2. With this faith we will be able to work together,to pray together,to struggle together,to go to jail together,to stand up for freedom together,knowing that we will be free one day.

表示按计划或安排要做的事这种结构也可用于过去。
was/were to do sth.表示曾经计划要
做的事,但不表明计划是否被执行,或表示“命运(即命中注定要发生的事)”,而非计划;was/were to have done sth.表示未曾实现的计划。
例句:
The Queen is to visit Japan in a week’s time.
女王将于一周后访问日本。
4. So long as there is life,the force will show itself.

so long as表示条件,意思是“只要”。

名词性从句
一、主语从句
1.定义:在主从复合句中,充当主语的从句叫主语从句。
2.引导主语从句的关联词有:that(不充当句子成分,仅起引导作用,通常用it作形式主语,一般不可省略),whether,who,whom,whose,what,which,whoever,whatever,whichever,where,when,how,why。
①Where we shall have the meeting makes no difference.
我们在哪儿开会都无所谓。
②That we are invited to a concert this evening is good news to us.
我们被邀请去参加今晚的音乐会,这对我们来说是个好消息。
注意:that引导主语从句时,不能省略。
③Whether we go by train or by boat makes no difference.
我们乘坐火车还是乘船没差别。
④Who will host the meeting hasn’t been decided.
谁来主持会议还没决定。
⑤Whose car runs faster should be tested.
应该测试谁的车跑得更快。
⑥Whatever he likes will be given to him.(whatever=anything that)他喜欢的所有东西都会给他。
⑦Why Chen Lin committed suicide hasn’t been clear yet.
陈琳为何自杀仍不清楚。
3.主语从句能用it作形式主语
由于主语从句太长,为了避免头重脚轻,常常用it作形式主语,而把主语从句放在句
末。
主要用于下面四种句型:
(1)It+be+形容词(obvious,natural,surprising,wonderful,possible,likely,certain,
probable,etc.)+that从句
(2)It+be+名词词组(no wonder,an honor,a good thing,a pity,no surprise,etc.)+that 从句
(3)It+be+过去分词(said,reported,thought,expected,decided,announced,arranged,etc.)+that从句
(4)It+seems,happens等不及物动词及短语+that从句
(5)It doesn’t matter(makes no difference etc.)+连接代词或连接副词引导的主语从句
①It is certain that she will do well in her exam.
她在考试中会做得好,这是确定无疑的。
②It’s no surprise that our team has won the game.
我们队赢得了比赛,没什么惊讶的。
③It is decided that the meeting will be put off till next Monday.已决定会议将推迟到下周一。
4.主语从句中应注意的问题:
(1)主语从句的语序总是用陈述语序。
How he managed to survive in the forest interested everyone present.
令在场的每个人感兴趣的是他是怎样设法在森林中活下来的。
(2)时态与谓语动词的单复数。
①如果主句是过去的时态(包括一般过去时和过去进行时),那么从句的时态一般要用相应的过去的某种时态。
一个主语从句作主语,谓语动词一般用单数,但what引导的主语从句的谓语动词要看后面的名词的单复数而确
定。
a.When we shall have our sports meeting has not been decided.
什么时候开运动会还没定下来。
b.What I need is money.
我所需要的是钱。
c.What I need are books.
我所需要的是书。
②如果由and连接两个或两个以上的主语从句作主语时,谓语动词用复数;由两个或多个连接词引导一个主语从句时,谓语动词用单数。
a.When they will start and where they will go have not been decided yet.
他们将在什么时候动身以及要去哪里还没定下来。
b.When and where the meeting will be held has not been decided.
会议将在什么时候以及在哪里举行还没定下
来。
二、宾语从句
1.定义:在主从复合句中,充当宾语的从句叫宾语从句。
2.引导宾语从句的关联词有:that(在宾语从句中常可省略);从属连词if/whether;连接代词who,whom,whose,what,which,whoever,whatever,whichever;连接副词where,when,how,why。
①He told me (that)he visited his friend the other day.
他告诉我前几天他拜访了他的朋友。
②We don’t know who will be our headma ster.
我们不知道谁将是我们的校长。
③Do you know which building they live in?
你知道他们住在哪一幢楼里吗?
④I can’t imagine how he did it.
我不能想象他是怎么做出这事的。
3.宾语从句需要注意以下几点:
(1)主句的主语是第一人称时,谓语为
think,believe,suppose,expect等动词引导宾语从句时,有时谓语尽管是否定意思,却不用否定形式,而将think等动词变为否定形
式,这一现象称为否定前移。
I don’t think he cares,does he?
我认为他不会在意,他会吗?
(2)有些动词带宾语从句时习惯上需要在宾语从句前加it,这类动词有:hate,enjoy,like, love,dislike,appreciate,see to(负责)等。
I hate it when they talk with their mouth full of food.
我不喜欢当他们讲话时他们满嘴食物。
(3)动词find,feel,think,consider,
make,believe等后有宾语补足语时,需要用it作形式宾语而将that宾语从句后置。
I think it necessary that we take plenty of boiled water every day.
我认为每天饮用大量的开水是必须的。
(4)在demand/desire/insist/order/ propose/ recommend/require/suggest等表示决定、要
求、愿望、命令、建议等动词后,that从句中常用“(should+)动词原形”。
The teacher suggested that we (should)call off the plan.
老师建议我们取消计划。
(5)在由doubt,doubtful引导的宾语从句中,如果主句是肯定句,宾语从句的连接词用whether/if,在否定句或疑问句中,宾语从句的连接词用that。
I don’t doubt that he will pass the exam.
我相信他会通过考试的。
4.宾语从句中的时态
宾语从句的时态必须与主句呼应。
(1)如果主句中谓语动词是现在时态或将来时态,那么从句中谓语动词不受主句中谓语动词时态的影响,可以根据需要使用任何时态。
①She says(that)she works from Monday to Friday.
她说她从周一至周五上班。
②I know he didn’t tell you the truth.
我知道他没有告诉你真相。
Mr. Smith says (that)she has never been to Mount Tai.
史密斯先生说他从来没去过泰山。
(2)如果主句谓语动词是过去时态,那么从句中的时态为表示过去的某种时态(如过去时,过去进行时,过去完成时,过去将来时)。
①The judge said there was no witness when the accident happened.
法官说当事故发生时现场没有目击者。
②The boy told us that he had been to New York.
小男孩说他曾去过纽约。
【注意】如果宾语从句表示的是客观事实、自然现象或真理时,即使主句是过去时,从句也用一般现在时。
Our teacher told us that light travels faster than sound.
老师说光比声音传播得快。

名词性从句包括主语从句、宾语从句、表语从句和同位语从句。
因为它是从句,因此具有句子的结构特点(即有一套主谓成份);同时又具有名词性特点,所以可以在复合句中作主语、宾语、表语或同位语。
一、连接词what与that的用法区别
引导主、宾、表语从句时,what要充当主语、宾语或表语等句子成分,that不作任何成分,只在语法上起连接的作用。
二、连接词whether和if的用法区别
通常,引导主语从句、表语从句和引导同位语从句时,要用连词whether,不用if;习惯上也只能说whether or not,而不说if …or not。
三、名词性从句的语序
与别的从句一样,名词性从句必须用陈述语序。
四、形式主语、形式宾语
当主语从句较长,而谓语较短时,常常将从句后置,而用it作为形式主语,置于句首。
动词后接复合宾语,也可用it作形式宾语。
五、Who / whoever, what / whatever等的用法区别
一般说来,what/who等含特指意义,而whatever/whoever等含泛指意义,意为“无论什么/无论谁”。
六、Where, when, why等连接副词引导的名词性从句
Where, when, why等连接副词也可以引导名词性从句,使用的关键是:这个词必须符合句子的逻辑意义要求。
七、“介词+who(m)引导的宾语从句”与“介词+ whom”引导的定语从句的区别
介词后面的引导词用主格还是宾格,决定于它在宾语从句中作主语还是宾语。
八、连接词that的省略
引导宾语从句时,that通常可以省略,但引导主语、表语和同位语从句时,that不能省。
九、同位语从句引导词where, when的用法特点
说明先行词内容的同位语从句的引导词where, when与被说明的名词在概念上不一致。
但引导定语从句的引导词却必须保持一致。
