Lost cities that have been found
The White City
In 2015, a team of explorers to Honduras in search of"the Lost City of the Monke God"led to the discovery of the White City. They found the ruins in the Mosquitia region of the Central American country which is known for poisonous snakes, vicious jaguars and deadly insects. It is believed that local people hid here when the Spanish conquerors(征服者) occupied their homeland in the16th century.
Canopus and Heracleion
Modern researchers were teased by the ancient writings about the Egyptian cities Canopus and Heracleion-where Queen Cleopatra often visited. But the cities weren’t found until 1992, when a search in Alexandria waters found that the two cities had been flooded for centuries. Artifacts(史前器物) showedthat the cities once highly developed as a trade network, which helped researchers piece together more about the last queen of Egypt. Machu Picchu
A Yale professor discovered "the Lost City in the Clouds"in 1911. A combination of palaces, plazas, temples and homes, Machu Picchu displays the Inca Empire at the height of its rule. The city, which was abandoned in the 16th century for unknown reasons, was hidden by the local people from the Spanish conquerors for centuries keeping it so well preserved.
Troy
The ancient city of Troy in homer's The Iliad was considered a fictional setting for his characters to run wild. But in 1871, explorations in northwestern Turkey exposed nine ancient cities layered (层叠) on top of each other, the earliest dating back to about5,000 years before. It was later determined that the sixth or seventh layer contained the lost city of Troy and that it was actually destroyed by an earthquake, not a wooden horse.

Birds also face extinction. The Arctic terns,a species evolved to fly across the world on4000kmannual journeys, are on their last migration (迁徙) to Antarctica.
The Last Migrationby the Sydney-based writer Charlotte McConaghy is a different sort of climate novel, one in which the heroine's(女主人公)damaged soul is as much a story as the damaged environment This is McConaghy's first work of literary fiction, after a history publishing in science fiction and a romantic fantasy series.

The book became a story of a double journey: the migration of the birds, and a broken woman's travelling to the end of the earth.
Much of the book is told in flashbacks, the action jumping between the south coast of New South Wales to the west coast of Ireland and to Greenland.
"I've always been fascinated with Ireland: the landscape, the people and the poetry and music.I was
fascinated with writing a character from there. It was a way to connect more with the place."
McConaghy says she also wanted to have a character who was"of two places"."I had lived in 21 houses by the time I was 21, as a result I definitely know how it feels to feel as if you are not sure where you belong and feeling as if you are between two worlds."

Is homeschooling good or bad? That is a question that many parents ask themselves. In my opinion, homeschooled kids can give reliable answers.
Kayla Murray, who lives inGreensboroNorth Carolina, started homeschooling almost eight years ago, after attending two local schools. “Homeschooling is school at home,” like the name says, but it’s not just that/ she says. “You're able to learn more and do more.”
Having experienced learning at both school and home, Kayla says that she prefers the latter. “With homeschooling, I can do schoolwork in my pajamas, and no one cares,” she says, “you also have more chances. Earlier this year, my family and I were able to take a short vacation and go to an air show. My siblings and I get to
take the day off for our birthdays. This year, I spent that time reading and playing the piano and guitar.”
There are, however, drawbacksof being homeschooled, Kayla says, especially “the lack of people”. While she doesn't miss homework, al school, she did enjoy getting to see my friends every day.”
Matthew Dimmette, also fromGreensboro, used to be a homeschooler. He now attends public high school. He says being homeschooled is quite different from going to public school. The differences depend on how you arc homeschooled and the things you do. “For me, it wasn't really different in terms of the classes but the school environment was a big change atter hearting at home. says Matthew.
Talking about his homeschooling experience, Matthew says the best part of it was being able to learn what he wanted to. Yet the main disadvantage was that he couldn't do many experiments in homeschooling unless taking classes at different places. “My interest in science has been growing quickly in recent years, so I chose to go to public school,” he says.

As a widespread instrument, it enjoyed an unmatching popularity in the Qin Dynasty. The guzheng has strings varied from 6 to 23. That is the most commonly used is the 21-string guzheng. However, some musicians still used the 16-string guzheng now, main in the coastal provinces of China.

第二节书面表达(满分25分)
52.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

The year I turned 30, my friend Erin and I decided to hike part of Newfoundland’s East Coast Trail—215 kilometres between Cappahayden and St. John’s where the wild scenery was very charming! The path there would bring us great fun.
Neither of us had gone on a hiking trip longer than five days and now we were in for 14, but we were excited. Nature! Strength! Character! Our hike would end up giving me all of those things in cruel abundance, but there was one take-home I didn’t expected: proof of the astonishing kindness of strangers.
As a shy woman schooled in the risk of stranger danger, I’m not one to open up to people I don’t know. In Toronto I don’t even chat with my seatmate on the subway or in a grocery line, and I certainly don’t ask for help unless I’m desperate. But on this hike I had to learn new ways to cope.
Over our first two days we covered less than 30 kilometres, most of it in the rain. What had been a gentle mist when we started evolved into a downpour by the second day. Nothing dried overnight, everything was wet. The roads were rugged, with muddy patches so deep that stepping in the wrong place meant mud to mid-calf—which is to say over and into your boots. We squelched(发出嘎吱声)with every step.
All that was very awful for me. On our second day, as we were still on a road looking like cats left in the rain, a woman and her parents making their way from car to house caught sight of us and took pity. “Would you like to come in for a cup of tea?” Jenny asked.
“Thank you!”
