第三部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
阅读理解(共15小题,每小题2分,满分30分)

A
I suppose that the most basic and powerful way to connect to a nother person is to listen. Just listen. Perhaps the most importa nt thing we ever give each other is our attention. And especially if it’s given from the heart. When people are talking, there’s no need to do anything but receive them. Listen to what they’re sa ying. Care about it. Most times caring about it is even more imp ortant than understanding it. Most of us don’t value ourselves or our love enough to know this. It has taken me a long time to be lieve in the power of simple saying “I’m so s orry,” when someon
e is in pain.
One of my patients told me that when she tried to tell her story people often interrupted to tell her that they once had somethin g just like that happening to them. Her pain became a story abo ut them. Eventually, she stopped talking to most people. We co nnect through listening. When we interrupt what someone is sa ying to let them know that we understand, we move the focus of attention to ourselves. When we listen, they know we care.
I have even learned to respond to someone crying by just listeni ng. In the old days I used to reach for the handkerchiefs, until I r ealized that passing a person a handkerchief may be just anoth er way to shut him down, to take them out of their experience of sadness. Now I just listen. When they have cried all they need to cry, they find me there with them.
This simple thing has not been that easy to learn. It certainly we nt against everything I had been taught since I was very young.
I thought people listened only because they were too shy to spe ak or did not know the answer. But now I know that a loving sile nce often has far more power to heal than the kindest words. 56. What does the author value most in the communication with each other?
A. Deep understanding
B. Saying “I’m Sorry”.
C. Attention from heart.
D. Doing nothing.
57. The woman patient stopped telling her story to most people because ______.
A. She didn’t get enough respect from others
B. she was discouraged by being often interrupted
C. people often told her their own opinions
D. people couldn’t understand her sad situation
58. If you hand a handkerchief to someone crying, you may ___ ___.
A. hurt his feelings
B. make him embarrassed
C. encourage him to continue to cry
D. stop him from letting out his sorrow
59. It can be inferred from the passage that while communicatin g, ______.
A. listening is a perfect way to respond to others
B. people keep silent because they don’t know the answer
C. keeping silent means being too shy to speak
D. it is easy to form the habit of listening silently

From the beginning of human history, wild animals provided foo d, clothing and sometimes medicine. We may not depend so m uch on wild animals now. But we hear about them every day. A mericans use the names of animals in many ways. Automobile manufacturers (制造
商) and gasoline companies especially like to use big cats to sel l their products. They like lions, tigers and wildcats. When Amer icans say wildcat, they usually mean a lynx, an ocelot or a bobc at. All these cats attack quickly and fiercely. So wildcats repres ent something fast and fierce.
An early American use of the word wildcat was quite different. It was used to describe members of Congress who declared war on in 1812. A magazine of that year said the wildcat congress men went home. It said they were unable to face the responsibil ity of having involved their country in an unnecessary war. Wildcat also has been used as a name for money. At that time, some states permitted banks to make their own money. One ba nk in the state of offered paper money with a picture of a wildc at on it. Some banks, however, did not have enough gold to sup port all the paper money they offered. So the money had little or no value. It was called a wildcat bill or a wildcat bank note.
The banks which offered this money were called wildcat banks.
A newspaper of the time said those were the days of wildcat mo
ney. It said a man might be rich in the morning and poor by nigh t.
Wildcat then was used for an oil well or gold mine that had almo st no oil or gold in it. Dishonest developers would buy such prop erty. Then they would sell it and leave town with the money. Th e buyers were left with worthless holes in the ground. Today, wi ldcat oil wells are in areas that are not known to have oil.
