People often ask me how I write with four children.
More often than not, my stories are pieced together, written, and edited in a series
of 36 moments. If I’m working while the kids are home, I have the added 37 of tuning out their chaos. I’ll write and write until I fall under a spell(着迷), and just when I was getting 38 , it happens—Camille will 39 into my office wearing a big smile—and a smelling diaper (尿布).
I wish I had a daily 40 , a solid time no one can interrupt, but I don’t. I may
go days or even weeks without writing. I hate these 41 , but much as I like to believe the world needs my writing, my daughters need me much more. So for now I write when I can. While this arrangement works, I sometimes 42 how productive I’d be if my life wasn’t stop-and-go. With time on my side, I could be a writing machine, 43 at once what would normally take me months.
This leads me to a question I find 44 to all parents: Do kids hold back or 45 our dreams? Children are needy by nature, and regardless of how much 46 we show them, they want m ore. By the time we tend to them, we’re tired out—and 47 in the mood
to follow our dream. They push our personal pleasures 48 and slow us down, making tortoises out of hares.
On the other hand, children add a richness to our lives that I believe inspires better work, thus 49 for time we lose. As a writer, I don’t find inspiration sitting at my computer. 50 , I find it when I’m out living, and the 51 I take because of my children—going to the ballpark, birthday parties, even doctor visits—put me in 52 with people who constantly set off new ideas. Many ideas arise through 53 conversation, which can 54 me like thunder. Immediately, I’ll make a mental note, knowing that someday I’ll use that 55 in a story.

Healthy knees aren’t the main consideration i n choosing high heels, but new research says chunky heels are just as bad for the knees as spindly stilettos (细高跟鞋). “It takes a long time to feel the effects of knee osteoarthritis (骨关节炎) --- and once you do, it
is too late,” said Dr. Casey Kerrigan, leading researcher of the study and associate professor at Harvard Medical School’s department of physical medicine. “I compare it to smoking --- one cigarette is not painful, but over a lifetime it is. Wide-heeled shoes feel comfortable, so women wear them all day long, “Kerrigan said. “They are better for your feet than stiletto heels, but just as bad fo r your knees.”
In the study, researchers had twenty women wear two pairs of shoes with three-inch heels, one with a narrow heel and the other with a thick one. The scientists compared how much pressure was put on the women’s knees by both types of shoes. T he women also walked barefoot to test normal pressure. The scientists found that both types of shoes applied equal amounts of pressure to the knees. Compared with walking barefoot, the heels increased pressure on the inside of the knee by 26 percent. Increased pressure on the knee eventually leads to arthritis(关节炎), experts say.
The idea that high heels are bad for your health isn’t new --- scientists have warned women for years that they contribute to problems ranging from corns to hammer toes, tendonitis, knee pain, sprained (扭伤) ankles and back problems. But in 1998, Kerdgan and a team of Harvard researchers were the first to link high heels and knee osteoarthritis, a painful joint disease that destroys cartilage (软骨) surrounding the knee. The first study looked only at stiletto heels, and Kerrigan said she wanted to study the chunky high-heeled shoes she noticed many women wearing. “This study confirms what we all intuitively (直觉地) know that high-heeled shoes of any kind are not good for our health,” said Dr. Glenn Pfeifer, a San Francisco doctor and member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons who was not connected to the study.
60. We learn from the passage that women choose chunky heels because _______.
A. chunky heels do less harm to knees
B. chunky heeled shoes are cheaper than stiletto heeled pairs
C. they want to walk comfortably
D. chunky heels are not painful at all
61. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.
A. people have known the high heels are bad for health for years
B. people got to know the high heels are bad for health recently
C. people haven’t known the high heels are bad for health yet
D. people will be warned that the high heels are bad for health soon
62. The best title for the passage may be ________.
A. Taking Healthy Knees into Consideration
B. High-heels Do Harm to Knees
C. Chunky Heels and Stiletto Heels
D. When Wearing High-heels

I’m afraid we have to accept the fact that criminals are getting younger all the time, but unfortunately the crimes are becoming more serious. I only wish we didn’t have to admit this but, in doing so, we must first ask ourselves what’s wrong with our society, or else our children clearly couldn’t care less about law and order.
The days of the sneak thief who stole a couple of apples or a packet of sweets from a chain store are actually over. I had a chance to say this to a young offender the other day, “Sweets from a chain store?” He said, “You must be joking. That’s what kids do.”
I may add that he was aged 11. In other words, today’s young criminals would find it laughable to risk being caught for petty theft of this description. They’ve got enough money in their pockets to buy the sweets they want, anyway. I think it’s all too easy to put the blame on anyone but ourselves.
Faced as they are with a society that frequently gives them up on the grounds of color, race or low learning ability, these children turn to crime as a means of showing off their self-respect. Nurtured on films and TV glamorizing (美化) the role of the criminal, they are quick to copy these anti-heroes. It is a matter of increasing concern to the police and government that the Children and Young Persons Act, 1969, is becoming improper to deal with the rise in young criminals. Because the emphasis has been placed on the cause and gentle treatment of their crimes, rather than on old-fashioned methods of punishment, the children themselves know well that there is very little that can be done to prevent them continuing to steal, damage and in some case even cause the death of those they choose to terrorize (恐吓). I don’t like the look of this situation any more than you do. In our own interests and in those of our children and grandchildren, we cannot continue to take
the “it’s nothing to do with me” attitude we hav e used for so long. We must unite in
a common demand for harder and stricter methods against these young criminals.
63. By raising the question “Sweets from the chain store?”, the writer was asking the boy whether _ _______.
A. he wanted some sweets from a chain store
B. he was caught while stealing from a chain store
C. stealing sweets from a chain store was illegal
D. the days of stealing sweets from a chain store were over
64. Psychologically speaking, the reason why some youngsters commit crimes is that _______.
A. they think it a way of showing their self-respect
B. they want to take revenge on society
C. they are good at imitating the criminals in the films
D. they don’t know what they are doing is against the law
65. In dealing with young criminals, the writer is obviously in favor of _______.
A. more patient methods in educating young criminals
B. showing great concern about our children
C. severe punishment once used in the past
D. treating every young criminal as our own child
66. In the writer’s opinion, who should be blamed most?
A. TV and films.
B. Young criminals.
C. Police.
D. Society.

It was eleven o'clock that night when Mr. Pontellier returned from his night out. He was in an excellent humor, in high spirits, and very talkative. His entrance awoke his wife, who was in bed and fast asleep when he came in. He talked to her while he undressed, telling her anecdotes and bits of news and gossip that he had gathered during the day. She was overcome with sleep, and answered him with little half utterances.
He thought it very discouraging that his wife, who was the sole object of his existence, showed so little interest in things which concerned him and valued so little his conversation.
Mr. Pontellier had forgotten the candies and peanuts that he had promised the boys.
Still, he loved them very much and went into the room where they slept to take a look at them and make sure that they were resting comfortably. The result of his investigation was far from satisfactory. He turned and shifted the youngsters about in bed. One of them began to kick and talk about a basket full of crabs.
Mr. Pontellier returned to his wife with the information that Raoul had a high fever and needed looking after. Then he lit his cigar and went and sat near the open door to smoke it.
Mrs. Pontellier was quite sure Raoul had no fever. He had gone to bed perfectly well, she said, and nothing had made him sick. Mr. Pontellier was too well familiar with fever symptoms to be mistaken. He assured her the child was burning with fever at that moment in the next room.
He reproached his wife with her inattention, her habitual neglect of the children. If it was not a mother's place to look after children, whose on earth was it? He himself had his hands full with his business. He could not be in two places at once; making a living for his family on the street, and staying home to see that no harm done to them. He talked in a dull, repeated and insistent way.
Mrs. Pontellier sprang out of bed and went into the next room. She soon came back and sat on the edge of the bed, leaning her head down on the pillow. She said nothing, and refused to answer her husband when he questioned her. When his cigar was smoked out, he went to bed, and in half a minute was fast asleep.
Mrs. Pontellier was by that time thoroughly awake. She began to cry a little, and wiped her eyes on the sleeve of her nightdress. She went out on the porch, where she sat down and began to rock herself in the chair.
It was then past midnight. The cottages were all dark. There was no sound except the hooting of an old owl and the everlasting voice of the sea, which broke like a mournful lullaby (催眠曲) upon the night.
The tears came so fast to Mrs. Pontellier's eyes that the damp sleeve of her nightdress no longer served to dry them. She went on crying there, not caring any longer to dry her face, her eyes, her arms.
She could not have told why she was crying. Such experiences as had just happened were
not uncommon in her married life. They seemed never before to have weighed much against the abundance (充足) of her husband's kindness and a uniform devotion which had come to be self-understood.
An indescribable oppression, which seemed to generate in some unfamiliar part of her consciousness, filled her whole being with vague pain. It was like a shadow, like a mist passing across her soul's summer day. It was strange and unfamiliar; it was a mood. She did not sit there inwardly scolding her husband, expressing sadness about Fate, which had directed her footsteps to the path which they had taken. She was just having a good cry all to herself.
The mosquitoes succeeded in driving away a mood which might have held her there in the darkness half a night longer.
The following morning Mr. Pontellier was up in good time to take the carriage which was to convey him to the ship. He was returning to the city to his business, and they would not see him again at the Island till the coming Saturday. He had regained his calmness, which seemed to have been somewhat weakened the night before. He was eager to be gone, as he looked forward to a lively week in the financial center.
67. Why didn’t Mr. Pontellier’s wife showed much interest in his conversation?
A. She was tired of her husband’s anecdotes and gossip.
B. She disliked it that her husband came home once a week.
C. She was sleepy when he returned home.
D. Her husband contributed little to the family.
68. How do you understand the sentence “Mrs. Pontellier sprang out of bed and went into
the next room”?
A. She reacted rudely against her husband’s dull, insistent talking.
B. She feared that her child should have developed a fever.
C. She couldn’t put up with her husband’s smoking any longer.
D. Her child was talking about a basket full of crabs.
69. What does the underlined word “they” refer to?
A. The husband and wife
B. Her face, eyes, arms
C. Tears
D. Experiences
70. Which of the following concerning the husband is right?
A. He lay the burden of child care altogether on his wife.
B. The husband cared much about his wife’s feelings.
C. He felt grateful to his wife for her attendance to the family.
D. The wife blamed her unfortunate fate on her husband.

第一节任务型读写(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)

Zebras have their own bug repellent(驱虫剂)?
Eww bugs! They are so annoying! We humans are lucky that we can apply repellents to avoid nasty bites. But what’s an animal to do? They have no choice but to spend their days shooing (赶走)them off with their tails, unless, of course, they are zebras, who apparently have their own automatic repellent--- their striped skin!
Scientists had originally thought that the reason why the animal had developed the black and white lines was to help protect itself from predators (食肉动物)in the African savannah(大草原), because the stripes make it difficult to single out one zebra that is traveling with a herd. While that may be true, the theory has never been tested or proven. Now the experts have another---that the stripes have evolved to repel the annoying horse flies that not only feed off their blood, but also, transmit dangerous germs into the bodies of these innocent animals.
The study was performed by a team of Swedish scientists. One of the clues that got them
thinking along these lines was the fact that darker horses got bitten more often than light-colored or white ones.
The fact that zebras are born black and only develop stripes as they grow older made the scientists theorize that the stripes may be something the animals have developed to make themselves less attractive to flies.
To test if this may be the case, they painted some boards at a horse-infested(寄生的) horse farm in Budapest with patterns of black and white stripes of varying widths and applied a layer of glue on them. What they noticed was that the places where the black and white stripes were at their narrowest (similar to what zebras have) attracted the fewest flies. They achieved similar results when they painted horses with black and white zebra-like stripes.
While the research are not sure why this may be the case, they believe it may be something to do with the way insects operate---horseflies are attracted to horizontally polarized light(偏振光); since white does not reflect it, white horses are luckier than black ones. But zebras seem to be the luckiest of all. When the researchers measured the polarized light reflected from real zebra skins, they found that it matched light patterns that were the least attractive to horseflies.
While this theory does make logical sense, nobody is 100 percent sure that it is really true, given that it has never been tested on a real zebra. If it is true, it does raise the question of why a horse, a close relative of the zebra has failed to develop stripes. The researchers believe that this could be because there are more horseflies in Africa, where zebras reside(居住), than anywhere else in the world.

第三节书面表达(20分)
请根据下面提示,写一篇短文。
词数150左右。
An old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and four-year-old grandson. The family ate together at the table, but his shaky hands and failing sight made eating difficult. Peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor. When he grasped the glass, milk spilled on the tablecloth. The son and daughter-in-law became angry with the mess. So they set a small table in the corner. There Grandfather ate alone while they enjoyed dinner.
Since Grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl. Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp when he dropped a fork or spilled food. The grandson watched silently. One evening, the father noticed the son playing with wood scraps(碎块)and asked the child sweetly, “What are you making?” The boy responded, “Oh, I am making a bowl for you and mum to eat your food in when I grow up.”
The words struck the parents so hard that they were speechless. Then tears started to stream down their cheeks. The son gently led Grandfather back to their table. From then on, he ate every meal with them. Neither of them seemed to care any longer when a fork was dropped, milk spilled, or the tablecloth soiled.
