二、阅读理解
Many of the world’s best known and culturally significant landmarks are disappearing. And many of these are so much more than just tourist attractions. The Taj Mahal
It’s hard to imagine this structure, located in Agra, India, being in danger. The structure itself is in some danger from the elements. The Indian Supreme Court could potentially close the attraction, claiming that unless the government does a better job of preserving it, they’ll have to shut it down. Pollution is visibly changing the Taj’s surface. It has also experienced insect damage.Old City of Jerusalem
One of the world’s most spiritual places, the Old City of Jerusalem, is in danger of disappearing. The Western Wall, also known as the Wailing Wall, is a valuable site that dates back to around20 BCE. The city was actually listed on UNESCO’s list of endangered cultural sites in the 1980s. Widespread urbanization has been found to pose a significant threat to the city.Hatra
These grand ruins stand in Iraq. As the capital of the first Arab Kingdom, Araba, Hatra is a site of massive historical significance. It withstood (抵住) Roman military force. The ruins went undiscovered until the 1830s; German archaeologists only began excavating (挖掘) it in the early 1900s. Sadly, it became a target of the guns in 2015. Soldiers destroyed the structures with bullets and destroyed statues. It was after this that UNESCO gave it an endangered status. The Portobelo-San Lorenzo forts
While not as ancient as other sites, these fortifications (防御工程) on the Panama coast are considered historically significant. The Lorenzo forts were constructed in efforts to protect trade routes; they were built over two centuries, starting in the 1590s. The forts face several challenges, including widespread urbanization.
21.Why does the Indian Supreme Court intend to close the Taj Mahal?
A.It fails to be well protected.B.It works for a political reason.

Growing up in Nigeria, Sunday Agbonika raised a pet dog, which was unusual in the 2000s, let alone having a trained dog in the countryside. But he did everything with his dog and trained it regularly, which inspired him to learn more about how animals could help people.
One day, he came across a video by Nathan Selove, who gave talks about living with autism (自闭症). In the video, Selove explained how he struggled with school and was often bullied (欺负). But after getting a service dog, his grades and relationships improved.
The idea that his background with animals could help support children like Selove struck Agbonika. So he planned to visit the US to take a dog- learning course, but he was denied a visa. He turned to another way to learn. He read as many books as he could and watched a lot of videos. By the time he learned enough knowledge about how animals could help a person’s well- being, he was qualified to work as a dog trainer. When he worked in a pet store, he also took in dogs from clients and trained them in person.
The first challenge he met was reaching children who could benefit from animal- assisted therapy. He tried connecting with centers that worked with these children, but only two loved the idea. They gave him the chance to run a trial to see if it would work. He ended up getting remarkable results, which let him get the message out there. Many centers started showing interest.
Later Agbonika ran the Dogalov HumAn Support Initiative. In 2019 Agbonika received the Fellowship for Young African Leaders, a program which selects 700 Africans to go to various universities in the US to learn leadership and team-building skills each year. The fellowship helped him build a relationship with the international community. And more and more people are now getting to see the work he’s doing and are more willing to hear what he has to say. 24.What phenomenon was described in Nigeria in the 2000s?
A.Having a trained dog was rare in a family.B.Pets were seen as people’s companions.
C.Raising animals in the family was strange.D.Pet dogs were common in the country. 25.What did the video by Nathan Selove show?
A.He struggled to make ends meet.B.He was cured of autism successfully.
C.He owed his improvement to a service dog.D.He inspired people to use pets to treat autism.
26.How did Agbonika get the qualification of working as a dog trainer?
A.He took dog- learning courses in the US.B.He adopted dogs from clients to train them.
C.He taught himself through books and videos.D.He received training from some animal centers.
27.How did the Fellowship for Young African Leaders help Agbonika?
A.It helped him become a leader.B.It raised funds for his program.
C.It allowed him to do research abroad.D.It exposed his idea to more people.
In life, there are times when we lose our way, both literally and figuratively (比喻意义上地). We might get lost walking in the woods or sailing at sea, which are examples of being literally lost. We could also lose our way while on our career path, which is an example of being figuratively lost. If you are physically lost and do not have a compass, you could use the stars in the night sky to know which way to go, especially the North Star. The North Star can also help if you get lost figuratively.
Some people may say their North Star is something very important to them. It can include principles and guiding beliefs. It can give life meaning and direction. For some people, their North Star may be a religion. For others, it might be a purpose, like teaching people to read. Or a North Star can be a mix of important things.
There is a term that is linked to the North Star. A lodestar is also a star which is used to find one’s way. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary explains that both meanings of “lodestar” date back to the1300s. The English poet Geoffrey Chaucer used both meanings of the word in his poems. However, by the 1600s, the literal meaning fell out of common use. After the term “lodestar” was used commonly, people used it in a figurative way meaning something or someone who guides them.
As the world changes around you and grows more complex, you can look to your North Star to help guide you. Your North Star can help keep you focused on the important things and stay on track. During a difficult or important time, many things can act as your North Star or lodestar. For example, when a woman went through a difficult time, her close friend was her lodestar and helped her surmount it.
28.How does the author bring out the topic?
A.By asking some questions.B.By making a comparison.
C.By putting forward a problem.D.By stating natural phenomena.
29.What can we infer about the North Star from the second paragraph?
A.It takes people off track.B.It stops people getting lost.
C.It varies from person to person.D.It shapes people’s mindset.
30.What happened to the term “lodestar” by the 1600s?
A.The word was given new meanings.B.People were confused by its meanings.
C.Many poems only used its literal meaning.D.Its literal meaning was abandoned commonly.
31.What does the underlined word “surmount” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Oppose.B.Overcome.C.Analyze.D.Combine.
Have you ever struggled with a task because having two arms just wasn’t enough? If so, you might appreciate a new device that could lend a helping hand. You are equipped with this robotic arm and then control it with the muscle you use to breathe.
In the past, robotic parts have been designed to replace missing limbs (肢). In those cases, signals could be sent straight from a user’s brain to the device. The nerves and muscles that would have moved their natural arm would then control the robotic one. With the new device, the challenge was to create a bonus limb that someone could control while still using both of their real arms. That’s why engineer Dominijanni’s team designed it to be breath- controlled.
Before building the new real arm, the team first made one in virtual reality, or VR. Over three days, some 10 to 20 volunteers did several sets of tests with this VR arm. Wearing the breath sensors, they learned to control the virtual third arm. At the same time, the breath sensors in their headsets (头戴式耳机) measured their eye movements. This confirmed people could look around and talk while controlling the bonus arm.
Breath control of the virtual arm seemed to come naturally to people. It took the volunteers almost no time to figure it out, Dominijanni says. And when tested on using the VR arm again, even a year later, all could still do it.
But it’s not yet completely clear how well people can control two natural arms plus a robotic one. “When you’ve lost an arm, there are very clear parts of your brain, nerves, muscles that are responsible for controlling that arm,” says Jacob George, a professor in robotics. “When
you’ re adding something new, it’s unclear how much the brain can do with that.” How well people can control a bonus arm without limiting use of their real limbs is an interesting question, says scientist Soheil Gholami. Answering it will require research in a host of fields, he says. But the new device meant a lot to scientists.
32.What’s the advantage of the new robotic arm compared with the past one?
A.It helps people talk and move freely.B.It only requires a user to use real arms.
C.It receives signals from the user’s brain.D.It works by the user’s breathing muscle. 33.What can we know about the breath sensors?
A.They evaluate the VR arm.B.They control users’ breath.
C.They check users’ eye movements.D.They instruct how to control the VR arm. 34.How does Soheil Gholami like the new device?
A.Its future is doubtful.B.It has a long way to go.
C.Its working principle is unclear.D.It is time- consuming to build it. 35.What is the text mainly about?
A.A new robotic arm is on the way.B.Advances have been made in VR.
C.The disabled are hopeful of moving.D.A device controlling breath is created.

The kids had been begging to visit the Disneyland theme park. Though we’d saved much but we still had difficulty affording the trip. Actually, it had already been a hard year when we were living on a tight budget. But we still agreed to take them to the Disneyland theme park.
Then a letter arrived saying our cousin was getting married in Southern California, where there is a Disneyland theme park. Anyway, we had to celebrate with her. So we made a plan that we could go on a trip to the theme park after her wedding. To reduce the cost, we’d stay in the car for the night and use discount tickets to go to the park the day the wedding was finished.
But after arriving there, we found Disneyland was out of reach financially for four children. Then I noticed outside its gates was a massive LEGO store. So I decided to take the children there and let them pick out LEGO sets to take home and build. They could spend as much time as they wanted exploring the store. And during the time, I must come up with a solution to entering the park. Upon entering the shop, the kids were excited to see all the life- sized things built to decorate the LEGO store. While the children were busy shopping, my phone rang. It was my mother who asked me about the trip. When I was telling my mother the trouble of entering the park, I felt a tap on my shoulder. A woman, a tourist, had overheard the conversation. “My name is Patty, and I have tickets to Disneyland,” the woman said. “We’re not going to use them. I think I can give you my extra tickets.” Hearing her words, I felt a wave of relief. My children could achieve their dream of entering the park. So after saying thanks, I followed Patty to her hotel to get the tickets.注意:
