In his 402nd anniversary year, Shakespeare is still rightly celebrated as a great language master and writer. But he was not the only great master of play writing to die in 1616, and he is certainly not the only writer to have left a lasting influence on theater.
While less known worldwide, Tang Xianzu is considered one of Chinas greatest playwrights and is highly spoken of in that country of ancient literary and dramatic traditions.
Tang was born in 1550 inLinchuan,Jiangxiprovince. Unlike Shakespeare's large body of plays, poems and sonnets (十四行诗), Tang wrote only four major plays: The Purple Hairpin, Peony Pavilion (《牡丹亭》), A Dream under the Southern bough, and Dream of Handan. The latter three were constructed around a dream narrative, a way through which Tang unlocked the emotional dimension of human desires and ambitions and explored human nature beyond the social and political limits of that time.
Similar to Shakespeare, Tang's success rode the wave of a renaissance (复兴) in theater as an artistic practice. As in Shakespeare'sEngland, Tang's works became hugely popular inChinatoo. During Tang'sChina, his plays were enjoyed performed, and changed. Kunqu Opera, a form of musical drama, spread from southernChinato the whole nation and became a symbol of Chinese culture. Combining northern tune and southern music, kunqu Opera was known for its poetic language, music, dance movements and gestures. Tang's works benefited greatly from the popularity of kunqu Opera, and his plays are considered classics of kunqu Opera.
While Tang and Shakespeare lived in a world away from each other, there are many things they share in common, such e humanity of their drama, their heroic figures, their love for poetic language, a lasting popularity and the anniversary during which we still celebrate them.

A Singaporean company will feed airport food waste to mealworms before turning them into fish feed, aiming to cut the country's use of imported feed and offer a continuous alternative.
Blue Aqua Internationalwill partner with Dnata, an air and travel services provider, to change organic waste at Singapore's Changi Airport into insect protein for aquacultural use, according to a statement Tuesday.
The project looks to replace traditional fish and soybean meal as the main sources of protein for aquafeed. The insects will eat the food waste and change it into part of the body containing about 60 per cent protein. The dried baby worms will then be made into feed.
These mealworms can be a continuous solution to several problems. Using a small land and giving out less carbon, they turn food waste into feed and offer an alternative source of protein. Ynsect SAS, a small French business that keeps mealworms to feed fish and pets, attracted money from investors includingIron Manmovie actor Robert Downey Jr. in a round of fund-raising last year.
The deal will give Singapore's farmers access to domestically produced animal feed, which is traditionally bought from abroad. The Southeast Asian nation imports more than 90 percent of its food and has set a goal to produce a third of its food locally by 2030. It also aims to achieve a general recycling rate of 70 per cent by then. Presently, less than 20 per cent of Singapore's food waste is recycled.
As part of the partnership, Dubai-based Dnata will add Blue Aqua to its list of suppliers to buy locally farmed seafood for its catering service.
4. What is the function of mealworms?
A. To cut the use of imported fish feed.
B. To eat food waste and make fish feed.
C. To domestically produce animal feed.
D. To replace traditional fish and soybean meal.
5. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. The producers of the feed.
B. The purpose of the project
C. The advantages of the project.
D. The composition of the feed.
6. What can we infer about Singapore from Paragraph 5?
A. It is a rich country.
B. It is short of self-produced food.
C. Its recycling rate is very high now.
D. Its farmers don't support the deal.
7. What is the text mainly about?
A. A new way to produce fish feed.
B.An introduction to a company.
C. A plan to reduce food waste.
D. A deal to protect farmers.

Earthquake can disrupt whales’ hunting for food for up to a year, according to a new study.
On November 14, 2016, the Kaikoura earthquake struck New Zealand’s South Island, causing a destructive tsunami. Under the surface, the earthquake caused strong currents that swept away and mostly killed off diverse ecosystems of creatures living along the Kaikoura underwater canyon.
As a result, whales had to dive deeper and longer to find food—“a major shift” in their behavior, says co-author Liz Slooten, a marine biologist at the University of Otago in New Zealand.
The impact earthquakes have on land animals has been well documented, but scientists know ly little about what happens underwater. Such research is important for government agencies, which may need to take recent earthquakes into consideration when considering fishing quotas(限额), notes Rochelle Constantine, a marine mammal ecologist at the University of Auckland.
The canyon’s upper reaches are rich in creatures, supplying food for the fish that make up the whales’ diet. So when these smaller life forms were washed away, it had “severe consequences for the community around there”, says study co-author Will Rayment. “That effect flowed all the way through the food chain.”
As part of their ongoing study, the scientists were tracking 42 individual whales. After the earthquake, in all, the team managed to record data on 40 whales, showing that the abundance of whales in the general area didn’t change after the earthquake. However, the whales changed how they used their habitat.
A year after the earthquake, the researchers observed the whales returning to their previous surface-breathing intervals. This could have been because the communities of animals that make up the whales’ food began to recover. “It gives you an idea of how resilient(有复原力的)these deep-sea communities are,” says Rayment.
But he and his colleagues will continue long-term monitoring to see if there are effects they missed. Whale activity in the area had already been declining, though it’s unknown whether it is due to natural changes in food
abundance, whale-watching tourism, fishing, or warming ocean temperatures. “There is something going on in Kaikoura,” says Rayment.
8. What happened after the Kaikoura earthquake in the Kaikoura canyon?
A. Several destructive tsunamis struck the area.
B. Whales had to swim to other oceans to find food.
C. Nearly all marine creatures in Kaikoura were killed off.
D. Strong currents washed away many smaller creatures.
9. Which is one of the findings of the study?
A. Earthquakes can make it easier for whales to find food.
B. The whales changed their habitat after the earthquake.
C. It usually takes whales a year to adapt to their new diet.
D. The number of whales in the area dropped sharply after the quake.
10. What does Rochelle Constantine think of the study?
A. It can help government agencies to make some decisions about fishing.
B. It can help government agencies to solve problems in the fishing industry.
C. It is a breakthrough in research on what happens underwater after an earthquake.
D. It offers a detailed description of the impact earthquake have on marine mammals.
11. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Something is affecting the whale activity in Kaikoura.
B. Fishing quotas have been increasing in recent years.
C. The team missed some effects in the research process.
D. The scientists will continue studying earthquakes.

If you travel inAthens, against popular belief, I would highly recommend saving the Acropolis for your secondday. As attractive as it is to head straight to the most famous building in the city, there are several reasons why you should hold off until later.Sunriseis the best time to see the ruins, and who wants to spend their first day in anew citywaking up at6 a.m.? On top of that, the Acropolis is going to make every other site inAthensless important in comparison, so I recommend not hitting it on your first day.
We got to the southeast gate at 7:30, half an hour before it opened at 8. When the gate opened, we rushed to the hill. Our plan paid off because we had the whole complex to ourselves for five minutes. In this age of
overtourism, getting to the greatness of the Acropolis with nobody else around felt special and excited.
The Acropolis is the name given to the complex on top of the hill, and it’s made up of several buildings. There’s theTempleofAthena Nike, the Parthenon, the Old Temple of Athena, the Legendary Olive Tree of the Pandroseion, the Porch of the Caryatids at the Erechtheion... and on your way down, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus.
Something that sounds boring but isn’t is theAcropolisMuseum, and I recommend spending a couple of hours there. As someone who is a museum-avoider, I listened to the recommendations of everyone who had been, and made myself go inside. And I loved it. The museum houses tons of sculptures unearthed from the Acropolis, and it was interesting to check them out.
Head toSyntagma Squarenext to watch the changing of the guard. This takes place every hour on the hour, so try to time your visit perfectly. The guards wear fun clothes and make for interesting photos.
12. The author suggests visiting the Acropolis on the second day so that ___________.
A. it can save visitors a lot of time
B. it can save visitors from getting up early
C. it can make for a better travel experience
D. it can give visitors a better understanding ofAthens
13. How did the author feel when he ran to the top of the hill?
A. Bored.
B. Worried.
C. Relaxed.
D. Amazed.
14. With what may the author agree about theAcropolisMuseum?
A. It is so great that it should be visited last.
B. It is enjoyable and worth visiting.
C. It wastes a lot of time.
D. It should be avoided.
15. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To provide some advice on visiting the Acropolis.
B. To introduce the history of the Acropolis.
C. To call on people to protect historic sites.
D. To encourage people to travel around.

One evening last fall, while Marcos Brown was doing his homework and his father, Johnson, a teacher, was preparing his lesson plans, they heard yelling outside. Johnson, 47, and Marcos, 15, opened the door, and saw chaos (混乱) four doors down, outside the home of one of their neighbors, the Ma family. “I didn't think anything was wrong,” Johnson recalls. “I told Marcos we should give them some privacy.” He headed back inside, but Marcos's eye was caught by a glow of fire from the Mas' house.
“Dad, the house is on fire!” Marcos cried. Only in shorts, the teen rushed toward the Mas' home with his dad. Grandmother Liz, mother Susan, and son Nathan were gathered on the front lawn yelling for help. When the Browns got there, they saw through the open front door that father Alex Ma was stumbling (跌跌撞撞) down the stairs, coughing, his face black with soot (煤灰).
“Is anyone else in the house?” Johnson asked.
“My son!” Alex managed to say, pointing to the second floor.
Johnson started up the stairs, but thick, black smoke, swirling ash, and intense heat forced him to his knees. He climbed upstairs and down the hall where Alex said he'd find Cody, eight, who had locked himself in a bedroom. “P'd never seen smoke like that,” says Johnson. “My glasses immediately turned black from the ash.”
As the fire spread across the hall, Johnson banged on the bedroom door and tried to turn the doorknob (球形门把手). But Cody didn't respond, and Johnson made his way back downstairs. At the same time, Marcos saw Liz and Susan pulling a ladder (梯子) out of the garage. “Cody was standing at the window, screaming for help,” says Marcos.
