*MILAN, Italy (AP)-------A. U. N. conference on climate change opened Monday, with organizers stressing there was “ unquestionable” scientific proof that human caused global warning. The meet-ing was clouded by new doubts that the U.S. rejected Kyoto agreement on controlling greenhouse gas e-missions would ever go into effect.

Most episodes of absent – mindedness –forgetting where you left something or wondering why you just entered a room------are saused by a simple lack of attention, says Schacter. “You’re supposed to remember something, but you haven’t encoded it deeply.”
Encoding, Schacter explains, is a special way of paying attention to an event that had a major impact(影响) on recalling it later. Failure to encode properly can ancoying situations. If you put your mobile phone in a pocket, for example, and don’t pay attention, you’ll probably forget that the phone is in the jacket now hanging in your wardrobe. “Your memory itself isn’t failing you,” says Schacter. “Rather, you didn’t give your memory system the information it needed.”
Lack of interest can also lead to absent – mindedness. “A man who can recite sports statistics from 30 years ago,” says Zelinski, “may not remember to drop a letter in the mailbox.” Women have slightly better memories than men, possibly because they pay more attention to their environment, and memory relies on just that.
Visual cues (提示) can help prevent absent – mindedness, says Schacter. “But be sure the cue is clear and available,” he reminds. If you want to remember to take medicine with lunch, put the pill bot-tle on the kitchen table—don’t leave it in the medicine chest and writer yourself a note that you keep in a pocket.
Another common episode of absent – mindedness: walking into a room and wondering why you’re there. Most likely, you were thinking about something else. “Everyone does his from time to time,” say Zelinski. The best thing to do is to return to where you were before entering the room, and you’ll likely remember.

68. A note in the pocket can hardly serve as a reminder because .
A. it will easily get lost
B. it’s not clear enough for you to read
C. it’s out of your sight

(Test 10)
I'm working in the Green Park Zoo in southeast London, I am an animal keeper. One morning I
went to work as usual. When I got to the zoo, my fellow told me that a young lion escaped from
the zoo because of the hurricane the night before. Mr. Charles the manager told us to get ready to
search for the lion at any time when needed.
At about 2 o'clock in the afternoon, we were told to set out at once, for it was reported that the lion
had appeared in the bushes in a lady's garden. We drove our car as fast as we could. When we got
there we found the garden had already been surrounded by the police. And the lion could be seen
in the bushes, eating something. We walked quietly towards the bushes. As we got near, I 2
pointed my pipe at the lion and fired. The lion made a sudden angry noise and struggled to its
feet, but failed. It fell over and lady still. In this way we caught the lion and took it to the zoo.
