More than £5,500 has been raised after a plea(请愿)last Monday by a vet Dr Scott Miller. Scott said: "I would like to say a massive thank-you to Express readers from myself, from Australia and from the koalas. It's amazing that people from across the world can see how significant the catastrophe has been. I do appreciate that people are being very supportive and reaching into their pockets." An area, a third of the size of Britain is estimated to have been ravaged(毁坏)since the blazes(火灾)began in September.
On Friday a state of emergency was declared in the capital Canberra, with residents told to prepare to evacuate as fires on the outskirts(市郊)threatened to spread. A billion animals are feared to have died, including 25,000 koalas.
Last week Scott told how he had visited his homeland, helping to save wildlife on Kangaroo Island off the coast of Adelaide. While there he rescued a mother and a baby koala who were stuck in a tree. The pair were rushed to a field hospital on the island to be treated. The mum had severe burns to her paws and was badly dehydrated(脱水的), while her baby son had an eye injury and was underweight.
Scott, who has appeared on ITV's This Morning and BBC's Blue Peter, said the mother is showing "great signs of improvement" and her wounds are starting to heal. The baby has undergone surgery to his eye and is "recovering from the anesthetic(麻药)and doing well".
But he added: "The mother remains dehydrated so it isn't producing enough milk to feed the baby. At the moment they're being housed severally but there is the hope that when the baby is a little stronger he will be able to be returned to his mother."
Even after they recover, the pair will probably spend their lives in an enclosure while the bush takes years to recover. Scott said: "Sadly patients are still coming in thick and fast. Each of these animals is requiring to be housed and fed, and regular medical treatment to their injuries."
(1)What can be inferred from the first two paragraphs?

The National Center for Health Statistics has carried out a research, which is viewed as an important evidence of the "Hispanic mortality paradox(西班牙裔死亡率悖论)."
On average, Hispanics live longer than whites and blacks. Their life expectancy at birth in 2006 was 80.6 years, compared with 78.1 for whites, 72.9 for blacks and 77.7 years for the total population.
The report shows that although Hispanic socioeconomic status(社会经济地位)are lower than that of whites, they have higher life expectancy at birth and at almost every age. "Mortality(死亡率)is closely connected with income, education and health care access," says Elizabeth Arias, author of the report. "According to these, the Hispanic population should have a higher mortality than whites, the same as the black population." But in fact, they don't.
The Hispanic paradox has been recorded for more than two decades, but this is the first time the government has had enough data to issue national numbers. Researchers are struggling to explain why Hispanics live longer.
"We don't know," says David Hayes-Bautista, director of the Center for the Study of Hispanic Health and Culture at UCLA's David Geffen School of Medicine. "We thought there was a problem in the data, but we can pretty much say this is real."
Potential factors:
• Culture and lifestyle. Due to the support from extended family and lower rates of smoking and drinking, Hispanic groups in particular have very strong family and social ties and healthy lifestyle.
• Migration. The "healthy migrant eff ect" argues that healthy people are more likely to migrate. And when immigrants become ill, they might return home and die there.
"Solving the puzzle may help the nation deal with health care issues because Hispanics use health services less—they make fewer doctors visits and spend less time in hospitals," Hayes Bautista says. "It's clearly something in the Hispanic culture," he says.
(1)In 2006, Hispanics' life expectancy is ________ years longer than the average of whites.
A.2.9
B.2.5
C.80.6
D.7.7
(2)What is the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A.Even experts can't explain the phenomenon.
B.Morality is closely related with health care access.
C.Whites should have longer life expectancy.
D.Hispanics were born better than whites.
(3)What's Mr. Hayes Bautista's opinion about the paradox?
A.He supports the healthy migrant effect is the most important factor.
B.He thinks there is a problem with the data.
C.He believes health care has much effect on the paradox.
D.He holds the view that the cultural factor influences the paradox.
(4)Which of the following conclusions is true according to the passage?
A.Hispanics might have healthier ways of life.
B.Black people suffered the lowest social status in America.
C.White people don't have strong family ties.
D.Only healthy people can immigrate into America.

Many parents worry that showing negative emotions in front of their children will cause them to suffer. For example, children may end up thinking it's their fault or simply "catch" the emotion. Indeed, this worry has a sound basis—the phenomenon of "emotional contagion"(情绪感染)is real, and one recent study found that parents can transfer their fear of going to the dentist, for example, to their children.
On the other hand, there is the natural idea that we should "be real" with our children, and that they will benefit from watching a parent who struggles and eventually deals with their negative emotions like any other human being.
There are three concepts to consider when it comes to emotional display in front of children: suppression(压抑), "uncontained" expression, and talking about emotions. Suppression of emotion is when you hide the outward signs of an emotion. Unfortunately, it doesn't work
very well—the act of suppressing your emotion actually increases your blood pressure. Observers can pick up on your distress despite your efforts to hide it, making them feel stressed. The recent research has also found that when parents feel negative emotions and keep them from their children, they experience lower relationship. quality and decreased responsiveness to their child's needs.
On the other hand, "uncontained" expression of anger and sadness by the parent is also not salutary for the child. Uncontained means high intensity emotion, with no attempts to regulate or take ownership of it. Shouting, smashing(摔)things and blaming someone else for "making you angry" are all example of this.
So, what is the middle ground? That would be talking about emotion taking ownership of them and showing your child that you are trying to deal with them. Classic research found that six-year-old kids had better emotional understanding and perspective-taking skills if their mothers bad talked to them about their emotions at the age of three. In fact, the more the mothers had talked, the better the outcome would be.
So next time you feel sad, angry or frustrated and your child is watching you expressing emotion, do explain what's going on in terms they can understand.
(1)The author uses the example of going to the dentist mainly to ________.
A.explain parents' common fear
B.introduce the topic of negative emotions
C.show children may catch parents' emotions
D.present the consequences of transferring negative emotions
(2)If a mother suppresses(压抑)her emotions, ________.
A.she will not make her kids feel stressed
B.she can hide her emotions from her kids
C.she will often shout at her kids for no reasons
D.she can't respond effectively to her kids' needs
(3)What is the author's intention of writing this text?
A.To encourage parents to "be real" with our children.
B.To call on parents to develop a positive attitude to life.
C.To inform parents of the consequences of negative emotions.
D.To recommend parents to talk about negative emotions with children.
(4)What's the structure of the text?
A.
B.

Growing up, we didn't have much money. Actually, we had very little. We lived in a small house with holes in the floor. We wore old clothes and had little food. With three little mouths to feed, my daddy worked as a gatekeeper in a middle school and then farmed our own small field until dark. Daddy provided the best he could for us and mama made our clothes on her old sewing machine. We could have easily applied for welfare, but my parents wouldn't think of it. Our family was full of love and proud of hard work.
Then I was in the third grade, in Mrs. Harper's class. One day, Mrs. Harper brought a huge
box of toys to school to give to "poor" children. Everyone was invited to bring some of his or her own toys from home to put in the box. Needless to say. I had hardly any toys of my own to offer.
My eyes got big the next day when I looked into that box. It was like a dream world to me—so many colorful toys! Clearly, Mrs. Harper saw the curious look on my face, and although I never asked with a smile, she let me pick out two toys for myself from the box. I was so thankful and thought that I was the luckiest girl in the whole world!
When I got home. I couldn't wait to show mama what I brought from the school. She admired the toys and asked where I got them. I told her about the box for the poor children and that Mrs. Harper had let me pick two toys from the box! Mama thought for a few seconds and said in a very sweet way, "No...no, you can't keep these two toys."
Paragraph 1:
Mama explained to me that those toys were for "poor" children. ________
Paragraph 2:
Mrs. Harper said she understood what mama meant. ________

(1)to practice
5 vs 5 battles
故填to practice。
(3)heroes
(4)mostly
(5)known
(6)historical
The real Jing Ke was a man.以及空后的in the
game he(8)________(turn)into a sexy girl with barely any clothes on可知,前后句之间为转折关系,又因为设空处后有逗号隔开,副词however符合语境,且空处位于句
故填However。
(8)turns
(9)who/which 考查定语从句。
故填who/which。
不定冠词a表示泛指,have a bad influence on...“对……有不良影响”为固定短语,故填a。
