You probably know who Marie Curie was, but you may not have heard of Rachel Carson. Of the outstanding ladies listed below, who do you think was the most important woman of the past 100 years?
Jane Addams (1860-1935)
Anyone who has ever been helped by a social worker has Jane Addams to thank. Addams helped the poor and worked for peace. She encouraged a sense of community (社区) by creating shelters and promoting education and services for people in need. In 1931, Addams became the first American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
Rachel Carson (1907-1964)
If it weren’t for Rachel Carson, the environmental movement might not exist today. Her popular 1962 book Silent Spring raised awareness of the dangers of pollution and the harmful effects of chemicals on humans and on the world’s lakes and oceans.
Sandra Day O’ Connor (1930-present)
When Sandra Day O’ Connor finished third in her class at Stanford Law School, in 1952, she could not find work at a law firm because she was a woman. She became an Arizona state senator
(参议员) and, in 1981, the f irst woman to join the U.S. Supreme Court. O’ Connor gave the deciding vote in many important cases during her 24 years on the top court.
Rosa Parks (1913-2005)
On December 1,1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks would not give up her seat on a bus to a passenger. Her simple act landed Parks in prison. But it also set off the Montgomery bus boycott. It lasted for more than a year, and kicked off the civil-rights movement. “The only tired I was, was tired of giving in,” said Parks.

I have dreamt of taking a trip to Hawaii since I graduated, but the best thing always needs waiting. I took a trip with my friends to Haleakala National Park, which lies in Hawaii.
When we arrived at Haleakala National Park, we were suggested to watch the early morning sunrise. I was lost in the sightseeing that afternoon, so I could hardly wait to meet the sunrise. In the next morning, we all jumped out of the bed very early at 3 o’clock and walked to the rocks by the seaside. In the first half an hour, we imagined how wonderful it would be when the first light came out through the thick clouds and how soft it would be when the light touched our skin, so we waited and waited. However, another half an hour later, I gradually lost my patience since there was nothing but the chilly darkness, and I felt that I was frozen to death. But my friends were still extremely cheerful.
Nearly another one hour later, “Amazing!”, a word burst out from Judy and we all shouted to welcome the light orange greatness, which is really unbelievable. Until today, I dare say that it is the most impressive sunrise in my life. However, waiting in the morning darkness is also the one I cannot wipe out forever.
Waiting sometimes is really a hard thing for most of us as it needs patience and strong-willed determination, but what about the result after that? It might turn out to be pleased, unbelievable and satisfied. So, it is really worthwhile to wait for the best.
25. What can we learn from the passage?
A. The trip to Hawaii was boring.
B. Hawaii is the best place to enjoy the most gorgeous sunrise.
C. Waiting doesn’t need patience or determination.
D. Sometimes, it is worthwhile to wait for the best.
26. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “chilly” in paragraph two?
A. Cold.
B. Calm.
C. Hopeful.
D. Peaceful.
27. Wh at’s the author’s attitude towards waiting for the sunrise?
A. Excited all the time. B disappointed all the time.
C. Firstly excited then impatient.
D. Firstly disappointed then patient.

Can dogs and cats get along well in the same home? People who are thinking about getting a dog as a friend for their cat are worried that they will fight. A recent research has found that if the cat is taken back home before the dog, and if they are introduced when still young (less than 6 months for cats, a year for dogs), it is highly probable that the two pets will get along swimmingly. In two-thirds of the homes cats and dogs have a good relationship.
However, it wasn’t all sweetness and light. There wa s a reported coldness between the cat and dog in 25% of the homes, while aggression (侵犯,攻击) and fighting were found in 10% of the homes. One reason for this is probably that some of their body languages are just different. For example, when a cat turns its head away it means aggression, while a dog doing the same means submission (顺从).
In homes with cats and dogs living peacefully, researchers found a surprising behavior. They are learning how to talk each other’s language. It is a surprise that cats can le arn how to talk “Dog”, and dogs can learn how to talk “Cat”.
What’s interesting is that both cats and dogs have appeared to become smarter. They can learn to read each other’s body languages, suggesting that the two may have more in common than was expecte d. Once familiar with each other’s body language, cats and dogs can play together, and enjoy sleeping together on the sofa.
The importance of this research on cats and dogs may go beyond pets —to people who don’t get along well, including neighbors, colleagues at work, and even countries. If cats and dogs can learn to get along, surely people have a good chance.
28. The underlined word “swimmingly” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to ________.
A. badly
B. hardly
C. poorly
D. smoothly
29. Some cats and dogs may fight when ________.
A. they are cold to each other
B. they look away from each other
C. they are introduced at an early age
D. they misunderstand each other’s body languages
30. It is suggested in Paragraph 4 that cats and dogs ________.
A. have common interests
B. have a common body language
C. are less different than was thought
D. are not so smart as was expected
31. What can we human beings learn from cats and dogs?
A. We should know more about animals.
B. We should live in peace with animals.
C. We should learn more body languages.
D. We should learn to get along well with others.

A new book called “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother” by Amy Chua has caused a debate (争论) about cultural differences in parenting. Amy Chua is a teacher in an American university and
both of her parents are Chinese. In the book, Ms. Chua writes about how she taught her daughters. She told NBC television that she had a clear list of what her daughters were not allowed to do, such as having a play date, watching TV or playing computer games and getting any grade less than an A.
Many people are against Amy Chua’s parenting style (风格), even her husband, who is American. They say it is rude and unfair to children. But she says her parents raised her and her three sisters in that way.
Ms. Chua says after her younger daughter shouted “I hate my life! I hate you!” she decided to retreat because she was afraid of losing her daughter. But she also says American parents often have low expectations of their children’s abilities.
“The debate is about what it means to be a successful parent and what it means to be a successful child,” said Stacy DeBroff, who has written four books on parenting. She says Amy Chua’s parenting style is not limited to Chinese families. It is a traditional way of pa renting among immigrants (移民). They hope to get a better future for their children.
She also sees a risk (风险). When children have no time to be social or to develop their own interests, they might not develop other skills that they need to succeed in life. DeBroff advises parents to develop their own style of parenting and not just repeat the way they were raised.
32. Which of the following words can best describe Amy Chua?
A. Polite.
B. Popular.
C. Cruel.
D. Strict.
33. Chinese and imm igrant families have Amy Chua’s parenting style to ______.
A. develop their children’s interests
B. develop their children’s skills
C. get a better future for their children
D. get their traditional lifestyle
34. According to Ms. DeBroff, _____.
A. Amy Chua’s parenting style should be forbidden
B. Americans should learn from Amy Chua
C. Amy Chua’s style is bad for children’s growth
D. parents should have their own parenting style
35. In which part of a newspaper can you read the passage?
A. Sports.
B. Culture.
C. Business.
D. Entertainment.
