Metonymy借代
1. 定义：它不直接说出某人或某事物的名称，而是借用与其密切相关的名称或其本身的某些属性来称代。

2. 借代关系
1）a container for its content以容器代内容
The kettle is boiling. (kettle 代替壶中的水)
壶开了。

Sorry, my pocket can’t afford such a pair of shoes. (pocket 代替衣袋里的钱) 对不起，我的钱不够，买不起这双鞋。

2) a place for the people以处所代人
The minute Presley took the stage, the museum hall burst into cheers. (museum hall 指代大厅中的观众)
普雷斯利一登台，整个音乐厅爆发出一片欢呼声。

The whole town attended the funeral.( town 代替镇民)
所有镇民都去送葬了。

3) a location for the institution or organization以所在地代机构、组织
Downing Street----the British government
唐宁街----英国政府
The White House----the US government

（pen指代写文章的人，即文人；sword指代使用刀剑动武的人，即军人）
5) a striking feature for the person or thing以特征代特征所有者
A bald slipped out through the back door. 一个秃头从后门溜了出去。

(bald指代秃顶的人)
The crown should not yield to the cross. 皇权不应屈服于教会
（crown指代国王，君主；cross原意为十字架，指代教堂）
Bob was promoted from the grey-collar to the white-collar in the shortest time.
鲍勃在不长的时间内就从灰领提升为白领。

（grey-collar指代从事服务行业的职工；white-collar指代从事脑力劳动的教师、律师、公务员等）
6) an organ for its function以器官代作用
He has a rough tongue. (tongue代替说话方式、能力)
他言语粗鲁。

Sheila is such a cool girl that she is good at letting her mind rule her heart. (mind 指代理智;heart指代情感)

7) author for work 以作者代作品
To read a Shakespeare or a Mark Twain is to eat a food full of protein. (Shakespeare 和Mark Twain分别指代莎士比亚和马克吐温的作品)
读一部莎士比亚或马克吐温的作品就是吃一份富含蛋白质的作品。

Only billionaires are able to collect Picasso.（Picasso指代毕加索的美术作品）只有那些亿万富翁才有能力收集毕加索的画。

8) the concrete for the abstract, or the specific for the general一具体代抽象或以特定代泛指
Without sweat, without bread. (sweat指代辛勤努力; bread指代一切食物、生计) 不流汗就没面包吃。

不耕耘就没收获。

9) the abstract for the concrete , or the general for the specific以抽象代具体或泛指代特定
He was an authority on Shakespeare.(authority 指代具有权威的人)
他是沙学权威。

The work is a pleasure to me.( pleasure指代一件乐事)

Death fell in showers. (death 指代子弹)
