I've loved my mother's desk since I was just tall enough to see above the top of it as mother sat writing letters. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens, and white paper, I thought that the act of writing is the coolest thing in the world.
Years later, during her final illness, my mother kept different things for my sister and my brother.“ But the desk,” She said, “it's for Helen.”
Although I knew she loved me and she only showed it in action, I wanted heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter. But they never happened. And a gulf opened between us. I was “too emotional (易动感情的)”,but she lived “on the surface”.
I had my own family later. I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way she chose that she forgave me. I posted the letter and waited for her answer. It didn't come.
My hope turned to disappointment, then little interest and finally, peace—it seemed that nothing happened. I wasn't even sure if the letter had got to mother. I only knew that I had written it, and I never heard from her!
Now the present of her desk told, as she'd never been able to, that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work. I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside—a photo of my father and a one-page letter, folded and refolded many times.
Give me an answer, my letter asks, in any way you choose. Mother, you always chose the act that speaks louder than words.

“Kaizen”, a Japanese word, is used to mean to change behavior and attitudes. During World WarⅡ, American factory managers were able to increase productivity by trying small, continuous improvements instead of sudden changes. 4.
Life is full of miracles. They surround us every day. One of these miracles happened to me recently. I was filling my car's tank at a local gas station. It was only 10 A.M. but I already felt tired. It was a cloudy, gloomy and rainy day and I hadn't slept well the night before. After I paid for the gas I turned my car towards the main road. I looked right and left then my brain sent the signal for my foot to push on the gas pedal but nothing happened. Shocked, I shook my head to clear it and gazed down at my foot.
Just as I did, though, a truck rushed past my car doing 60 mph. My weary eyes hadn't seen it when I had looked just 2 seconds earlier. If I had been pulling out when I should have been, my little green car would have been smashed and I would have most likely been killed. I sat there for a long time quietly thanking God for sparing my life before pulling out on the road and heading home. This time both my brain and foot worked perfectly.
As I looked back on that moment later I still couldn't understand it. Did God prevent my brain's signal from reaching my foot? Did an angel hold my toes to keep them from pressing on the gas? One question kept coming back into my mind as well: why? Why did I get this miracle? Why did God spare my life this day? Finally, I felt the answer forming deep within my heart and mind. I heard the words coming from my soul saying: “You still have more to do. Your work is not done yet!”
Richard Bach wrote: “Here is the test to find if your mission on Earth is finished: if you are ali ve it isn't.” Wake up each day then knowing that your mission isn't done yet. You have more love to share, more people to help, more kindness to give. You have one more day to be the miracle God meant for you to be.
(1)The underlined word “gloomy” probably means_________.
A. windy.
B. sunny.
C. overcast.
D. cool.
(2)After the writer paid for the gas, he planned to________.
A. sat in the car for a rest.
B. look right and left.
C. shake his head to clear it.
D. push on the gas pedal to turn his car towards the main road.(3)Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. The writer's green car was smashed by a truck.
B. There is something wrong with writer's gas pedal.
C. An angel holds the writer's toes to keep them from pressing on the gas.
D. The writer's foot didn't push on the gas pedal.
(4)What's the writer's attitude towards life?
A. The writer is positive towards life.

After I paid for the gas I turned my car towards the main road可知他要上主路,故选D。
I looked right and left then my brain sent the signal for my foot to push on the gas pedal but nothing happened可知我的大脑发出信号,让脚踩油门踏板,但是什么都没发生。
This time both my brain and foot worked perfectly.
Wake up each day then knowing that your mission isn't done yet. You have more love to share, more people to help, more kindness to give. You have one more day to be the miracle God meant for you to be.

A few months ago, a friend of mine told me something about a woman named Virginia Feigles. Virginia Feigles had always planned to go to college. She couldn't make her dream come true when she was young because her parents were poor. She got married early, and soon became a
mother. Year after year, time passed quickly. But Feigles never forgot her dream. After working as a hairdresser (理发师) for twenty years, she finally decided to change her life, when she was already forty-four.
Feigles first went to a night school to learn high school lessons. After a few months, she applied (申请)to Bucknell University. It was hard for her to study in the university. She couldn't understand what the teacher taught in class. She also had to work at night. After work, she kept learning until very late. She thought about giving up many times, but she never really did that. After a lot of such hard days, Feigles graduated (毕业)successfully and soon became an engineer!
I heard this story when I was at the bottom of my life. I was no longer young and I lost my job. Feigles' story inspired (激励)me a lot! "If Virginia can do it, I can too!" I decided to make some change to my life, too!
(1)How old was Virginia Feigles when she started working as a hairdresser?

D. Feigles' story made a difference to the writer's life.
(4)From the passage we can learn that___________________.

B. it's never too late to learn
C. anyone can be an engineer
D. parents are the best teachers

After working as a hairdresser (理发师) for twenty years, she finally decided to change her life, when she was already forty-four.
She
couldn't make her dream come true when she was young because her parents were poor.
She got married early, and soon became a mother.
根据第三段she applied (申请) to Bucknell University. It was hard for her to study in the university.

One day, after I had given him his dinner, he started crying for mum. He was so young and really needed mum. So I dressed him, put on his shoes, carried him on my back and walked out. Soon he fell asleep. About half an hour later, I found that he had lost a shoe while sleeping. I took him off my back and put him down. I knew we needed to find that shoe, for our mother couldn't afford new shoes. We had to go back to find it, so I told my brother to wait right there. Sometimes I really doubt whether there is love between my parents. Every day they don't act in the romantic ways that I read in books or I see on TV. In their opinion, "I love you" is too luxurious for them to say. Sending flowers on Valentine's Day is even more out of the question.
One day, my mother was sewing a quilt(被子)."Mom, I have a question to ask you." "What?" she replied, still doing her work. "Is there love between you and Dad?"
My mother stopped her work and raised her head with surprise in her eyes. Then she said, "Susan, look at this thread. Sometimes it appears, but most of it disappears in the quilt. The thread really makes the quilt strong and durable. If life is a quilt, then love should be a thread. Love is inside."
I listened carefully but I couldn't understand until the next spring. At that time, my father suddenly got sick seriously. After they were back from the hospital, my mother helped him walk slowly on the beautiful country road every morning. My father had never been so gentle. But after two months he still couldn't walk by himself. All of us were worried about him." Dad, how are you feeling now?" I asked him one day. "Susan, don't worry about me," he said gently. "To tell you the truth, I just like walking with your mom. "Reading his eyes, I know he loves my mother deeply.
Once I thought love meant flowers, gifts and sweet kisses. But from this experience, I understand that love is just a thread in the quilt of our life. Love is inside, making life strong and warm.

When the great library of Alexandria burned, the story goes, one book was saved. But it was not a valuable book, and a poor man got it.
The book wasn't very interesting, but between its pages there was something very interesting indeed. It was a thin strip of vellum(羊皮纸)on which was written the secret of the "Touchstone".
The touchstone was a small pebble(鹅卵石)that could turn any common metal into pure gold.
The writing explained that it was lying among thousands and thousands of other pebbles that looked exactly like it. But the secret was this. The real stone would feel warn, while ordinary pebbles are cold.
So the man sold his house, bought a tent, camped on the seashore, and began testing pebbles. He knew that if he picked up normal pebbles and threw them down again because they were cold, he might pick up the same pebbles hundreds of times. So, when he felt one that was cold, he threw it into the sea. He spent a whole day doing this but none of them was the touchstone. Yet he went on and on this way. Pick up a pebble. Cold—throw it into sea. Pick up another. Throw it into the sea. The days stretched into months and the months into years.
One day, however, about midafternoon, he picked up a pebble and it was warm. He threw it into the sea before he realized what he had done. He was used to throwing each pebble into the sea as soon as he picked it up. So when the one he wanted came along, he still threw it away.
So it is with opportunity(机会). Unless we are vigilant, it's easy to fail to realize an opportunity when it is in hand and it's just as easy to throw it away.

C. Interested.

The touchstone was a small pebble(鹅卵石)that could turn any common metal into pure gold.
He was used to throwing each pebble into the sea as soon as he picked it up.
What can we learn from the special, very successful people in the world who make the impossible possible?
Lesson 1: Ways of creative thinking are needed
Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg both dropped out of college. They prefer to teach themselves
because they like to develop their own ways of thinking. They think standard ways of teaching might stop people from being creative and having new ideas.
Lesson 2: The answer might not be what you expect
Find your answers from facts-not start with an expectation of what you will find. Stephen Jacobsen from Northwestern University believed what he was taught: that water on the Earth came from icy comets(封星)or planets which hit into the Earth.
However, by studying a special rock, he discovered that it acts like a sponge. This suggests that the Earth's water may have come from inside, driven to the surface to form the oceans, by geological activities.
"I had a pretty hard time making others believe it," he said." But think about the fact that you may be the first person to see something for the first time that doesn't happen very often. When it does, it's amazing."
Lesson 3: A little luck goes a long way
Years of planning went into a recent achievement in space travel. The European Space Agency's "Philae", a robot landing craft, met up with Comet 67P, which is 480 million kilometres away. The trip from the Earth by "Philae" had taken ten years!
The scientists had no idea what the surface of the comet would be like. If the landing failed, it would be impossible to get information from the spacecraft. Twenty years of work would have been wasted.
When "Philae" tried to land, it bounced(弹起)away from the comet's icy surface twice. Luckily, however, "Philae" landed successfully and began sending information back to the Earth.(1)Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg didn't finish college because .
A. they preferred to learn by themselves
B. they needed standard ways of teaching
C. their teachers didn't like their new ideas
D. their teachers weren't able to teach them
(2)In Lesson 2, the writer mainly wants to tell us that .
A. we should get answers from facts
B. we can believe what we are taught
C. it's hard to make others believe something
D. an expectation can help get an answer in research
(3)The example "Philae" in Lesson 3 shows that .
A. Comet 67P is not far away from the Earth
B. it took"Philae"20 years to reach Comet 67P
C. "Philae" landed on Comet 67P with a little luck
D. scientists knew nothing about the surface of Comet 67P
(4)The best title for this passage is " ".
A. Ways of discovering
B. Lessons for success
C. Ways of being special
D. Lessons for experiments。
