Ladies and gentlemen,
Good morning/afternoon/evening! It is with great pleasure and a mix of nerves that I stand before you today to share my experiences as a freshman at university, particularly focusing on my journey with the English language. As the saying goes, "Language is the road to thinking," and I have found this to be profoundly true in my own life.
Allow me to take you back to the day I first stepped onto the campus of my university. It was a day filled with excitement, apprehension, and, above all, a sense of uncertainty. Like many of my fellow freshers, I was leaving the comfort of my home and the familiarity of my high school to embark on a new chapter in my life. One of the most daunting aspects of this new chapter was the expectation to communicate effectively in English, a language that, while I had studied it for years, I had never truly mastered.
The first challenge I encountered was the simple act of understanding
and being understood. The first few weeks were a whirlwind of new faces, new accents, and a constant effort to piece together what was being said.
I remember sitting in my first English class, listening to the professor speak at a pace that seemed almost impossible to keep up with. My classmates, on the other hand, seemed to glide through the conversation, their voices filled with confidence and fluency.
I soon realized that I had a long road ahead of me. I began to attend additional English language workshops, seeking out conversation partners, and immersing myself in English as much as possible. I started reading books, watching movies, and listening to podcasts in English. I even made it a point to switch my phone's language to English, a small but significant step that forced me to engage with the language on a daily basis.
As I delved deeper into my studies, I found that the English language was not just a tool for communication; it was a gateway to understanding different cultures and perspectives. Through my courses, I was exposed
to a variety of texts, from classic literature to contemporary novels, each offering a unique lens through which to view the world. The authors
I encountered spoke of love, war, inequality, and the human condition,
all in a language that I was slowly but surely learning to appreciate.
One of the most memorable experiences was when I participated in an international debate club. It was here that I truly tested my English-speaking skills. Each debate required me to research a topic, construct arguments, and engage in a spirited exchange with my opponents. It was challenging, to say the least, but it was also incredibly rewarding. I learned to think on my feet, articulate my thoughts clearly, and respect the viewpoints of others.
Moreover, the English language became a bridge that connected me to a global community of students. I made friends from all corners of the world, each bringing their own unique background and perspective. We shared our stories, our dreams, and our challenges, all in a language
that was not our mother tongue. It was a humbling experience that taught me the importance of empathy and understanding.
However, my journey with the English language was not without its difficulties. There were moments when I felt overwhelmed, when I struggled to express myself, and when I was hesitant to speak up. But I learned that persistence is key. Each time I stumbled over a word or
lost my train of thought, I reminded myself that I was learning, growing, and becoming more confident in my abilities.
Today, as I stand before you, I am grateful for the journey that has brought me to this point. I have learned that language is not just about grammar and vocabulary; it is about connection, understanding, and the ability to share one's story with the world. My experiences as a freshman have shown me that the English language is a powerful tool, one that can open doors to new opportunities and enrich our lives in countless ways.
In conclusion, my journey as a freshman at university has been a transformative one, particularly in terms of my relationship with the English language. I have learned that language is not just a means of communication, but a window into the world, a tool for personal growth, and a bridge to new friendships and understanding. As I continue to
embrace the English language, I look forward to the many opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.
Thank you for listening to my story. I encourage each and every one of you to embark on your own journey with the English language, for it is a journey that promises to be both rewarding and enlightening.
Thank you.。
