Several weeks ago, I pulled an old road map out of the glove box and passed it to my children. They had never seen the province of Ontario laid out like that before. They stared at the map, asking about all the towns, parks, and other landmarks we’d visited, and I pointed them out on the map.
Digital maps and GPS are modern wonders that have gotten me out of many confusing places, but paper maps still have a role to play in our lives. Most of us adults learned to read them out of necessity, but it’s up to us to pass on that skill to children whose need may not be so obvious, but who still will benefit from it.
As Trevor Muir wrote in an article on this topic, “When kids learn how to create and use paper maps, they are doing more than just learning how to get around. They are actually developing a fundamental skill that they will use for the rest of their lives. Map skill still belong in today’s classroom.”
As a child, I had National Geographic Maps taped to my bedroom walls. This aroused my curiosity and imagination about those places and thus made me eager to remember my geography and history lessons because they were tied to places I’d “seen”. Even now as a
mother of four, I’ve also spared time to travel to many of the countries whose maps I studied as a child.
Additionally, in this fast-changing world, unexpected events can rapidly influence one’s usual way of life. When GPS satellites or Internet connections are affected, this old-fashioned skill can get you out of a mess without requiring a smartphone. Last but not least, paper maps arouse big picture thinking, showing kids that there’s a much bigger world out there and helping to direct them within it.
So, now is a good time to pull out those dusty old maps and lay them on the kitchen table.
4.How did the children react when they were given the paper map?
A.They showed great curiosity.
B.They seemed totally confused.
C.They found it less convenient than GPS.
D.They refused to read it without hesitation.
5.What is Trevor Muir’s attitude towards teaching paper map skill for kids? A.Neutral.B.Negative.C.Supportive.D.Doubtful. 6.Which of the following will the author agree with?
A.Paper maps are already out of date.
B.Internet connections are always reliable.
C.Paper maps provide kids with a grand vision.
D.GPS will sooner or later replace paper maps.
7.Which would be the best title for the text?
A.Time to Encourage Kids to Explore a Real World
B.How to Teach Kids to Survive in the Wild
C.How to Teach Kids to Recognize Strange Places
D.Time to Teach Kids to Read Paper Maps
Radio stations, TV stations, and online video and livestreaming platforms are forbidden to make, broadcast or spread programs that feature overeating, according to a new work plan issued by the National Development and Reform Commission, together with three other departments.
That's a positive move. It is easy to see from even a glimpse at any of the "big stomach"
videos or livestreams, in which the hosts may eat a dozen hamburgers for lunch, for example, that their eating obviously exceeds a normal appetite. According to reports, such "big stomach" eaters can attract large audiences and more followers for commercial advertisements.
A good appetite can be healthy. Yet to promote such distorted eating is dangerous, not only to those doing the eating on the shows but also any who may be tempted to emulate or compete with them, it can cause eating disorders such as bulimia and can prove fatal.
In August 2020, a "big stomach" surnamed Wang in Shenyang city, Northeast China's Liaoning province died when preparing for his job, before which his weight rose from 100 kilos to 140 kilos. In the same month, a 3-year-old girl called "Peppa" was found to weigh 35 kilos, far exceeding the normal weight, which aroused nationwide worries about her health.
Those appearing in such videos or livestreamings are usually hired by companies with whole teams to finish the job, and even then they often throw up during ad breaks so they continue their performance. And as well as by encouraging people to eat so much it may harm their health, by creating the impression that it is ok to eat to excess, such "big stomach" shows may lead to people wasting food.
Of course, that does not mean food videos or livestreamings should be curbed. A good food program can teach people how to cook delicious dishes or showcase local specialties from around the country. It could also spread the millenniums-long traditional food culture of China, which has made a deep impression on the whole world and got many followers. 8.What can we know about “big stomachs”?
A.They are a positive move.
B.They can see videos or livestreams easily.
C.They can draw many audiences and followers.
D.They often advertise their non-profit food.
9.The underlined word “distorted” in Paragraph 3 can be replaced by
A.abnormal B.casual C.exceptional D.rigid 10.Which of the following is NOT the effects of “big stomach” video or livestreaming for the eaters?
A.They may arouse eating disorders and even death.
B.They may trigger some health problems such as overweight.
C.They may mislead people into wasting food or overeating.
D.They may keep the eaters from throwing up.
11.What is the best title of the passage?
A.Food livestreamings should be banned
B.Love food, love life; don't envy “big stomachs”
C.Good appetite, good health
D.Food culture of China
Mirko Kovac, using collective building methods inspired by natural builders like bees and wasps, has developed a way to improve the flexibility of 3D printing. A typical 3D printer is limited by the range of its nozzle (喷头), and can only make objects smaller than itself. Dr Kovac’s team has removed these restrictions by giving the printer nozzle wings.
Writing in the latest edition of Nature, Dr Kovac describes a system of flying robots that is composed of two types of drones (无人机): builders and scanners. The builders carry the
3D-printing nozzle. The scanners are robots equipped with cameras that are responsible for monitoring the progress of the builders.
The building process alternates between builders and scanners, layer by layer; Printing and adjusting, until a structure is complete. First,a builder hovers(盘旋)over its area of operation and begins to release a jet of the building material as it moves along its flight path. The choice of material is important — it must be lightweight enough for the drones to carry but powerful enough to hold the subsequent layers that will be built on top.
Once the builder robot has sprayed a layer of material, the scanner robot flies over and inspects the progress. The system then computes the next layer that the builder should make, while also correcting for any errors that might have been discovered in what has already been built. These could be errors made by the builder-drones or imperfections in the expansion of the building material.
While these robots have been shown to be capable of manufacturing by passing some tests with flying co-lours, Dr Kovac says their bread and butter will probably be, initially, in repair, fixing building parts in dangerous or otherwise inaccessible places. Nevertheless, thinking more long term, Dr Kovac even sees a potential future for his construction robots, building on the surfaces of the Moon or Mars.
12.What is the key problem of a typical 3D printer?
A.It is too small.
B.It is not flexible enough.
C.It can’t be moved.
D.It doesn’t draw inspiration from nature.
13.What can we infer about Kovac’s printer from paragraph 4?
A.The process of spraying material works out exactly as planned.
B.It is the scanner robots that decide what the next player should be like.
C.Adaptation is necessary in the building process.
D.Expansion of the building material should be prevented.
14.Where may Kovac’s 3D builders be first used?
A.In repairing buildings.
B.In painting high-rise buildings.
C.In testing the security of buildings.
D.In constructing on the Moon or Mars.
15.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Building Robots
B.Flying 3D Builders
C.Occupying Mars
D.Natural Builders

Many pet owners desire to talk with their animals. After all, if pets were able to talk, people could take care of them more easily and have closer emotional connections to them, so a number of companies are working on devices and apps that could help understand what animals have to say.
