2015 saw things heat up and get out of hand, and not just in politics.
A record warm December raised average temperatures enough to make 2015 the second hottest year on record in the contiguous United States, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Climate Monitoring Annual Report.
The United Nations had previously reported that 2015 was shaping up to be the warmest year on record for the whole planet.
Last year was also the third wettest on record in the U.S. and saw ten weather- or climate-related disasters that each caused at least $1 billion in damage in the U.S. and killed a total
of 155 people. These include a drought, two floods, five severe storms, a wildfire, and a winter storm.
The average U.S. temperature was 54.4°F, 2.4°F above the 20th century average, and second only to 2012's record warmth. This was also the 19th consecutive year with average temperatures above the average for the century.
Every state reported above-average annual temperatures. The warming was particularly pronounced across most of the eastern half of the country in December, when many places saw temperatures 30 degrees above normal and many records were set.
This mirrored changes seen in the Arctic that month, when temperatures spiked to 50 degrees above normal. Part of this warming was driven by a strong El Niño, or periodic warming in the Pacific Ocean, but some of it can also be attributed to global warming, says meteorologist Eric Holthaus, who was not involved with the federal report.
The analysis comes less than a month after the U.S. and 194 other countries signed an agreement in Paris to more aggressively counter the effects of climate change.
“Even if all the initial targets in Paris are met, we’ll only be part of the way there when it comes to reducing carbon from the atmosphere,” said President Barack Obama at the time. Still, the agreement represented “a turning point” by setting up “the architecture" for doing so, he said. NOAA's climate monitoring center doesn't issue predictions for future weather, but the agency's Climate Prediction Center does. That team's forecast for the next three months calls for warmer-than-average temperatures in much of the country, although parts of Texas and the Southeast may be a little cooler than usual.
As Lancaster University Professor Gail Whiteman told the Weather Channel, "climate change means extreme weather is the new normal."
41. The following descriptions of 2015 are correct EXCEPT________.
A. It was the second hottest and the third wettest on record.
B. Ten disasters associated with climate occurred.
C. The average temperature broke the record for the century.
D. Disasters contributed to financial loss and casualties.
42. The passage reported the climate changes by using _____.
A. data
B. examples
C. contrasts
D. graphs
43. What is the closest meaning of El Niño?
A. Global warming.
B. Periodic warming in the Pacific Ocean.
C. Constant temperature rise.
D. Annual warming in the Pacific Ocean.
44. What is the point of the agreement signed in Paris?
A. It meant that all countries would be involved in countering climate problems.
B. It represented that initial targets of climate problems had been achieved.
C. It showed that many countries would positively deal with climate problems.
D. It indicated that “the architecture” of the whole world would change a lot.

With fuel costs rising and airlines finding more fees to impose on travelers every day, airfare isn’t getting any cheaper. Since you can’t drive to all your dream destinations, flying is the only way to go sometimes and the fastest. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to find the most affordable fares and also avoid paying as many extra charges as possible when you plan ahead.
Fly during the least popular times.Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday are the slowest days to fly, which means cheaper deals than the rest of the week. You can also find reduced rates on early morning flights, since many people don’t like to get up before the sun to get to the airport. Earlier boarding times can also considerably cut down your chances of getting bumped on an overbooked flight or delayed because of other delayed flights or mechanical issues.
Choose your seat later. Some airlines charge you to pick your seat when you book online, adding even more to the bottom line of your ticket cost. If you show up early on your travel day, you can still get suitable seats. Some of the best seats get held back until flight day, unless others are willing to pay extra for them ahead of time, so you still have the chance at one of those.
Fly on holidays. You already know that summer is the most expensive time to fly, and even though most other times are more affordable, the days surrounding holidays can be crazy. Save big if you’re willing to travel on major holidays, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Don’t wait until the last-minute to book. Many travelers don’t know that there’s a sweet spot for booking and getting the best price on your tickets. Book too early or too late and you could end up paying more than you need to. The best time to book is between three months and six weeks from when you want to travel.
Avoid extra fees.Airlines will charge for just about anything these days. Some have even toyed around with charging customers for using the restroom. All those extra fees can certainly add up, but there’s no reason to pay them if you don’t have to. Here are some tips to keep money in your wallet once you get to the airport.
Avoid the upgrade it's not necessary.Sometimes upgrades are free, but mostly you will be charged for seeking a last-minute bump to first class, and the cost can be hefty.
________________________. Fly carry-on only. Baggage fees vary wildly, but almost all airlines charge them and charge big. Why pay for your clothes to fly with you? If everyone in your travel party checks a bag, your bill can be astronomical before you ever even get to your destination. Make sure all your clothing coordinates, so you can take less and still make more outfit combinations, take only two pair of shoes, plan to do a bit of laundry on your trip and bring only travel-sized toiletries.
Pack your own snacks.Unless you’re flying internationally, it’s rare your flight comes with a free meal. Snacks on th e plane are not cheap and almost never healthy. Don’t rely on what’s on the small menu and instead tuck some of your own snacks – granola bars, homemade muffins, fruit and trail mix all make fantastic travel foods – into your bag and eat a lot better, and cheaper, than other passengers.
45. The passage is intended for people__________.
A. who care little about traveling fares and expenses

C. Book early morning flights.
D. Book flights four months ahead.

A. eating your own snacks
B. sitting on vacant seats
C. upgrading to first class
D. carrying hand-baggage

The relationship between exercise and cancer has long both intrigued and puzzled oncologists and exercise physiologists.
In epidemiological studies, people who regularly exercise generally prove to be much less likely to develop or die from the disease than people who do not. At the same time, exercise involves biological stress, which leads to a short-term increase in inflammation(炎症) throughout the body.
To try to better understand how exercise can both elevate inflammation and simultaneously protect the body against cancer, scientists decided to closely examine what happens inside mice.
The scientists implanted melanoma (黑色素) skin cancer cells into the mice before providing half of them with running wheels in their cages while the other animals remained sedentary. After four weeks, far fewer of the runners had developed full-blown melanoma than the sedentary mice and those that had been diagnosed with the disease showed fewer and smaller lesions(病变).
Next, the scientists undertook the far more challenging task of reverse-engineering the process by which exercise might be helping to fight off the tumors. To start, they drew blood from both the exercising and sedentary animals and cells from any tumors in both groups. Then they looked microscopically at how the various samples were different.
As expected, they found much higher levels of the hormone adrenaline in the blood of the exercising animals, especially right after they had been working out on the wheels but also at other times of the day. The body releases adrenaline in response to almost any type of stressful experience, including exercise.
They also found higher levels of interleukin-6 in the blood of the runners. This is a substance that is released by working muscles and is believed to both increase and decrease inflammation in the body capriciously, depending on where and how it goes to work.
Perhaps most important, they found much higher numbers in the bloodstreams of runners than in the sedentary mice of a type of immune cell named natural killer cells that are known to be potent cancer fighters.
Somehow, the scientists speculated, these elements in the runners —their elevated adrenaline, IL-6, and natural killer immune cells and their lower cancer risk — must be entwined, but it wasn’t clear how.
So the scientists repeated their original experiment multiple times, inducing cancer while allowing some mice to run and others to sit. But in some of these follow-up experiments, they injected the runners with a substance that blocked the production of adrenaline and gave sedentary
animals large doses of added adrenaline.
What they now saw was that when running mice could not produce adrenaline, they developed cancer at the same rate as the sedentary animals, while the sedentary animals that had been injected with extra adrenaline fought off their tumors better than other sitting mice.
More remarkably, by studying the action of various genes within the cells of the mice, the scientists determined that adrenaline seemed to be sending biochemical signals to some of the animals’ IL-6 cells, making them physiologically more alert, so that when a tumor began to develop in the affected animal, those IL-6 cells in turn activated the natural killer cells in the bloodstream and actually directed them to the tumors, like minute guide fish.
Because the runners’ blood generally contained more adrenaline, more IL-6, and more natural killer cells than did the blood of the sedentary mice, this process was intensified. A larger number of natural killer cells were directed to tumors in the runners, allowing their immune systems, it seems, to more effectively combat the malignancy.
But mice, obviously, are not people, and it is impossible to know from this study whether a similar process occurs in humans, although exercise, particularly moderately intense exercise such as jogging, has been shown to increase adrenaline and the production of natural killer immune cells in people, Dr. Hojman said.

My mom only had one eye. She ran a small shop at a flea market. She collected little weeds and such to sell… anything for the money we needed. There was this one day during elementary school. I remember that it was field day, and my mom came. I was so embarrassed. How could she do this to me? I threw her a hateful look and ran out. The next day at school… “Your mom only has one eye?!” and they taunted me.
I wished that my mom would just disappear f rom this world so I said to my mom, “Mom, why don’t you have the other eye?! You’re only going to make me a laughingstock. Why don’t you just die?” My mom did not respond. I guess I felt a little bad, but at the same time, it felt good to think that I had said what I’d wanted to say all this time. Maybe it was because my mom hadn’t punished me, but I didn’t think that I had hurt her feelings very badly.
Then I studied really hard. I left my mother and came to Seoul and studied, and got accepted in the Seoul University with all the confidence I had. Then, I got married. I bought a house of my own. Then I had kids, too. Now I’m living happily as a successful man. I like it here because it’s a place that doesn’t remind me of my mom.
This happiness was getting bigger and bigger, when someone unexpected came to see me “What?! Who’s this?!” It was my mother… Still with her one eye. It felt as if the whole sky was falling apart on me. My little girl ran away, scared of my mom’s eye.
And I asked her, “Who are you? I don’t know you!!” as if I tried to make that real. I screamed at her “How dare you come to my house and scare my daughter! Get out of here now!!” And to this, my mother quietly answered, “oh, I’m so sorry. I may have gotten the wrong address,” and she disa ppeared. Thank goodness… she doesn’t recognize me. I was quite relieved. I told myself that I wasn’t going to care, or think about this for the rest of my life.
Then a wave of relief came upon me… one day, a letter regarding a school reunion came to my house. I lied to my wife saying that I was going on a business trip. After the reunion, I went down to the old shack, that I used to call a house…just out of curiosity there, I found my mother fallen on the cold ground. But I did not shed a single tear. She h ad a piece of paper in her hand…. it was a letter to me.
She wrote:
My son, I think my life has been long enough now. And… I won’t visit Seoul anymore… but would it be too much to ask if I wanted you to come visit me once in a while? I miss you so much. And I was so glad when I heard you were coming for the reunion. But I decided not to go to the school…. For you… I’m sorry that I only have one eye, and I was an embarrassment for you. You see, when you were very little, you got into an accident, and los t your eye. As a mother, I couldn’t stand watching you having to grow up with only one eye… so I gave you mine… I was so proud of my son that was seeing a whole new world for me, in my place, with that eye. I was never upset at you for anything you did. Th e couple times that you were angry with me. I thought to myself, ‘it’s because he loves me.’ I miss the times when you were still young around me. I miss you so much. I love you. You mean the world to me.
My World Shattered. I hated the person who only liv ed for me. I cried for My Mother, I didn’t know of any way that will make up for my worst deeds…

F. Try to be an attentive listener rather than a talker
If you want to make friends, you need put yourselves to do things that require time, energy, unselfishness and thoughtfulness. Here are five skills you can learn to use when you make friends or win respect from others.
61.___________________
At a dinner party in New York, one of the guests, a woman who had inherited money, was eager to make a pleasing impression on every one. She hadn’t done anything whatever about her face. It radiated sourness and selfishness. She didn’t realize what everyone knows: namely, that the expression one wears on one’s face is far more important than the clothes one wears on one’s back.
62.___________________
It wasn’t a new truth for a long time ago, a hundred years before Christ was born a famous poet remarked, “We are interested in others when they are interested in us.” A show of interest, as with every other principle of human relations, must be sincere. It must pay off not only for the person showing the interest, but for the person receiving the attention. It is a two-way street-both benefit.
63.___________________
What was the reason for Andrew Carnegie’s success? He was called the Steel King; yet he knew little about the manufacture of steel. He had hundreds of people working for him who knew far more about steel than he did. But he knew how to handle people. He discovered the astounding importance people place on their own name. People are so proud of it that they strive to perpetuate it at any cost.
64. ___________________
According to the former Harvard president Charles W. Eliot, “There is no mystery about successful business intercourse......Exclusive attention to the person who is speaking to you is very important. Nothing is so flatting as that. Many persons call a doctor when all they want is an audience. To be interesting, be interested. Encourage them to talk about themselves and their accomplishment.
65.___________________
If you know you are going to be rebuked anyhow, isn’t it far better to beat the other person to it and do it yourselves? Isn’t it much easier to listen to self-criticism than to bear condemnation from alien lips? Say about yourselves all the derogatory things you know the other person is thinking or wants to say or intends to say—and say them before that person has a chance to say them.
