Is Aquaponics the Future of Food?
Welcome to the future of food! Aquaponics responds to the growing need for sustainable methods of food production by taking two practices, pairing the production of fish and plants together and connecting them through an eco-system to create environmental efficiency; Aquaponics uses only 10 percent of water compared to traditional agriculture and yields 2-3 times the amount of food, without the use of chemicals and pesticides(农药). The U.S. and China use roughly half of all chemical fertilizer in the world for food production. Imagine the possibilities.

[1]“Maybe when I’m 90 years old, I’ll get used to having everything I do taken for granted,” a young homemaker told a secret to her neighbor, “If Bill would compliment me once in a while, he’d make my life much happier.”
[2] Few of us realize how much we need encouragement. Yet we must bask(沐浴于) in the warmth of approval now and then or lose our self-confidence.
[3] All of us need to feel needed and admired. But unless we hear words of praise from someone else, how can we know that we are valued friends or co-workers?
[4] Anyone who wants to improve his relationships with others need only show a sympathetic understanding. The way to express this understanding and to give others the feeling of importance and worthiness boils down to this: always look for something in the other person you can admire and praise and tell him about it.
[5] We each have a mental picture of ourselves, a self-image. To find life reasonably satisfying, that self-image must be one we can live with, one we can like. When we are proud of our self-image, we feel confident and free to be ourselves. We function at our best. When we are ashamed of our self-image, we attempt to hide it rather than express it. We become hard to get along with.
[6] A miracle happens to the person whose self-pride has been raised. He suddenly likes other people better. He is kinder and more cooperative with those around him. Praise is the polish that helps keep his self-image bright and sparkling.
[7] What has this to do with your giving praise? A lot. You have the ability to perform that kind of miracle in another person. When you add to his self-pride, you make him want to like you and to cooperate with you.
[8] In a classic bit of advice, Lord Chesterfield suggested to his son that he should follow the example of the Duke de Nivernoise: “You will recognize that he makes people pleased with him by making them first pleased with themselves.”
[9] The effects of Praise can be great indeed. A new minister who was called to a church whose members were jokingly referred to as “a refrigerator”by other ministers decided against criticizing(批评)his people for their coolness toward strangers. Instead, he began welcoming visitors and telling them how friendly the members of the church were. Things gradually changed. “Praise transformed the
ice-cube members into warmhearted human beings,” he said.
59. From paragraph [1] and paragraph [2] we can learn that .
A. the young homemaker had a thirst for Bill’s praise
B. the neighbor reminded Bill to compliment the homemaker
C. it is well-known that we all need encouragement very much
D. getting other people’s approval leads to losing self-confidence
60. According to the passage, we become difficult to get on with probably
because .
A. we want to show our self-image
B. a miracle happens to other people
C. we are ashamed of being praised
D. we are not satisfied with our self-image
61. The example in paragraph [8] tells us that .
A. Lord Chesterfield advised his son to praise the Duke de Nivernois
B. praising other people will help win other people’s compliment
C. the Duke de Nivernois made Lord Chesterfield pleased with his son
D. receiving words of praise should go before praising other people
62. In paragraph [9], “a refrigerator” was quoted probably because .
A. it was always freezing cold in the church
B. the new minister criticized his people coolly
C. the church took the shape of a refrigerator
D. the members of the church were unfriendly to strangers

American researchers say drinking tea may help strengthen the body’s defense system against infection(感染). Doctors at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, did the study. The team studied a chemical found in black, green, oolong and pekoe tea. This chemical is an amino acid(氨基酸)called L-theanine. The scientists say it may increase the strength of gamma de lta T cells. That’s the letter T, not the drink. Gamma delta T cells are part of the body’s defense.
First, the researchers mixed some of these cells with antigens found in the amino acid. Antigens help the body react to infection. Then the scientists added some bacteria. Within twenty-four hours, the cells produced a lot of interferon, a substance(物质) that fights infection. Cells not mixed with the antigens did not produce interferon.
In the second part of the study, eleven people drank five to six cups of black tea every day. Ten other people drank the same amount of instant coffee. That is dried coffee mixed with hot water.
Two weeks later, and again two weeks after that, the researchers tested the blood of all twenty-one people. They also looked at what happened when they added bacteria to the blood cells. They found that the tea drinkers produced five times more interferon after they started drinking tea. The coffee drinkers did not produce interferon.
Doctor Jack Bukowski led the study. He says the antigens added to the gamma delta T cells were responsible for the increased reaction to the bacteria. He says that
the study also showed that the cells were able to remember the bacteria and fight them again the next time.
Earlier research already has found that tea can help prevent heart disease and cancer. Doctor Bukowski says the new study must be repeated by more people. “If the findings prove to be true,” he says, “then tea drinking might also help protect against bacte rial infections.” He says the amino acid L-theanine could be removed from the tea and used as a drug to strengthen the body’s defenses.
63. Tea may help strengthen the body’s defense system because it helps ______.
A. the body to produce more interferon
B. to add some bacteria to the blood cells
C. the body to produce more gamma delta T cells
D. to mix antigens with some of the cells in the body
64. According to Dr Bukowski, ______.
A. the findings of the study have already proved to be true
B. further study is needed to prove the findings true
C. he has taken some amino acid L-theanine from tea and made a drug with it
D. he is not sure whether tea helps prevent heart disease and cancer
65. What would be the best title for this text?
A. Tea May Help Fight Infection
B. Tea Is Better than Coffee
C. Our Body Needs Tea
D. Tea Can Help Prevent Cancer

The term “Industry 4.0” refers to the fourth industrial revolution(革命). The first industrial revolution was the production of goods with machines like steam engines, which was followed by the second industrial revolution that introduced mass production with the help of electric power, followed by the digital revolution —the use of electronics and IT in production.
Industry 4.0 is a high-tech project, which promotes the computerization of manufacturing (制造业). The basic principle of Industry 4.0 is that by connecting machines, work pieces and systems, we are creating intelligent networks along the entire value chain that can control each other automatically. The goal is the Smart Factory, which adapts well and uses resources efficiently as well as linking customers and business partners with great intelligence. Technological basis are the Internet systems and advanced factories. Experts believe that Industry 4.0 could be a reality
in about 10 to 20 years.
So, what effects does this change have on the classic manufacturing? According
to an expert, “it is highly likely t hat the world of production will become more and more networked until everything is connected with everything else.” Networks and processes have so far been limited to one factory. But in the time of Industry 4.0, the boundaries (界限) of individual factories will most likely no longer exist. Instead, they will be lifted in order to inter-connect multiple factories or even geographical regions.
How is an Industry 4.0 factory different from a today’s factory? In current industry environment, providing high-end quality service or product with the least
cost is the key to success. Factories are trying to increase their profit as much as possible. In the time of Industry 4.0, various data sources are available to provide worthwhile information about different aspects of the factory. Using data for understanding the current condition and checking faults and failures is a natural thing. The sharing of information around the clock and around the globe will enable these connected systems to manage themselves independently, work more efficiently and identify any errors quickly.
The good news is that Europe is much better prepared for the Industry 4.0 revolution than one might think. Europe will position itself as a pioneer in the fourth revolution. Industry 4.0 is a project in the high-tech strategy of the German government. Meanwhile, in the U.S., some companies are also working hard on it. But the success of industry depends on whether business and politics can work together. It’s not only politics that needs to help open the door for Industry 4.0. Every company is advised to seize the new digital opportunities.
66. What marks the coming of Industry 4.0?
A. Steam engines.
B. Mass production.
C. Intelligent networks.
D. Use of electronics.
67. Industry 4.0 will probably result in ________ in the world of manufacturing.
A. production limited to an individual factory
B. everything connected with everything else
C. networks and processes no longer existing
D. classic factories stopping their competition
68. What’s the meaning of the underlined part in Para. 4?
A. Sharing information of the world time.
B. Global news broadcast at any time.
C. Spreading news widely on the hour.
D. Instant worldwide information exchange.
69. According to the last paragraph, who is the most active in pushing Industry 4.0?
A. The German government.
B. The European companies.
C. The American government.
D. The American companies.
70. The writer’s attitude toward Industry 4.0 can best be described as ________.
A. negative
B. doubtful
C. supportive
D. cautious
第二卷(共35分)
第四局部:任务型阅读(共10小题,每题1分, 总分值10分)
根据所读内容在文章后图表中的空格里填入最恰当的单词。
注意:每空1个单词。
High School Activities & Good Grades
Grades really begin to have meaning to students when high school arrives. A student’s grades can help determine scholarship money for college and even help or hurt the chances of getting into the best post-secondary schools. For students who wish to improve their grades as much as possible, it’s a good idea to make a habit out of activities that tend to increase the grade point average(GPA平均分)in high
school. Some students may not know about the benefits of these activities, and should be encouraged by parents and friends.
Note Taking Habits
Taking notes is invaluable for students who are trying to raise their grades. There are several reasons why note taking is important. First, teachers tend to talk about what they plan to test on. This is whether the information is in the textbook or not. Of course it is important to read the texts, but pay special attention to what the teacher says in class and you’ll have a greater idea of what he thinks is important in the lecture—wh ich is likely what he’ll expect you to know on test day. Keeping notes also keeps your mind busy on the subject and discourages daydreaming during important lectures.
Sports
Forget about the “dumb jock(四肢兴旺)”stereotype(老一套). It’s simply not true in most cases. According to the California Interscholastic Federation website, multiple studies showed that students who participate in high school athletics tend to have a higher overall GPA than non-athletes and miss fewer days of school. One study on the site reveals nearly a full point higher GPA, half as many absences, 10 percent fewer disciplinary actions, nearly eight times lower dropout rate and five percent higher graduation rate for student athletes.
Study Groups
Study groups are an excellent activity for students who wish to better their grades. Getting a small group of students together regularly to discuss and work on a particularly difficult subject will help all the students involved better understand the concepts. The activity helps the students learn the material, but it also teaches them to work cooperatively, learn different ways to approach problems and alternative thinking processes and builds self-confidence. There is a big relief for kids who realize they aren’t the only ones who don’t understa nd a concept in class.
Seek Extra Credit(额外学分)
Extra credit can mean the difference in Bs and As for a student. The problem is, not every teacher will allow extra credit—but many do. Sometimes all it takes is a request. If a student shows that he is really interested in learning, wants desperately to make higher grades and is willing to work for it, then often a teacher is more than happy to send extra assignments along to help increase grades. Make a habit out of asking for extra credit any time your grades can possibly be higher. Your final GPA won’t reflect whether it required extra credit work, and that number could get you into a college you wouldn’t have otherwise been accepted into.

写作:
Dear Headmaster,
I’m Li Hua in Senior Two. I’ m writing to tell you something bad among us students.
Recently, it’s very common for some students to copy others’ homework. Asking around, I find several reasons responsible for this phenomenon. Firstly, we have to do too much homework, some of which is too difficult for us. Secondly, some students copy othe rs’ homework both to finish the tasks and please their teachers. Thirdly, some other students do so because they are too lazy to think on their own and show no interest in studying.
As students, we should attach great importance to doing homework. In fact, homework is left for students to make what we learn clearer and better. And also it’s important for teachers to know whether their students learn a lot in class. Therefore, those students should make full use of their time to work hard and do their homework honestly. My suggestion for our school is that strict rules should be made to punish those copying others’ homework.
Personally, copying is a bad behavior. Students should be educated to hold a correct attitude towards homework. Honesty is the most important quality of a person. We should keep in mind that “No pains, no gains”. Only by doing homework carefully can we make progress in our studies.
I’m looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua。
