1. He is always working in his lab, trying to figure out all the mysteries that make him puzzled. (p49)
(1) figure out :to finally understand something or someone, or find the solution to a problem after a lot of thought:
[+ question word] I can't figure out why he did it.
I find him really odd --- I can't figure him out at all.
Can you figure out the answer to question 5?
(2) puzzle :verb [I + adverb or preposition; T]
to cause someone to feel confused and slightly worried because they cannot understand something, or to think hard about something in order to understand it: The findings of the survey puzzle me - they're not at all what I would have expected. [+ question word] It puzzles me why she said that.
They are still puzzling about/over how the accident could have happened.

1 [S] a situation which is difficult to understand:
Scientists have been trying to solve this puzzle for years.
2 [C] a game or toy in which you have to fit separate pieces together, or a problem or question which you have to answer by using your skill or knowledge:
a jigsaw puzzle

confused because you do not understand something:
He had a puzzled look on his face.
I'm still puzzled as to why she said that.
I'm a bit puzzled that I haven't heard from Liz for so long.
puzzlement noun [U] FORMAL
a state of confusion because you do not understand something
puzzler noun [C] INFORMAL
something that is difficult to explain or understand:
I don't know what happened to the money - it's a real puzzler.
puzzling adjective
difficult to explain or understand:
It's a rather puzzling film.
a puzzling situation

the other day :a few days ago:
Didn't I see you in the post office the other day?
3. I think we should be cautious and use good judgement when making decisions about cloning.
(1) cautious :adjective
1) describes someone who avoids risks:
He was cautious when he was riding the bicycle.
The schoolboys are more cautious not to make any mistakes in spelling than ever before.
2) describes something which is careful, well considered and sometimes slow or uncertain:
a cautious approach cautious criticism
cautiously adverb in a cautious way
caution (CARE)noun [U]great care and attention:
We need to proceed with/exercise caution (= be careful in taking action, making decisions, etc.)
They treated the story of his escape with (some/great/extreme) caution (= thought that it might not be true).
(2) judgement :

worth:adjective
having a particular value, especially in money:
Our house is worth about £200 000.
Heroin worth about $5 million was seized.
adjective
1) be worth sth to be important or interesting enough to receive a particular action:
I think this matter is worth our attention.
When you're in Reykjavik, the National Museum is worth a visit.
2) be worth having/doing sth to be important or useful to have or do:
There's nothing worth reading in this newspaper.
If you are a young, inexperienced driver, it is worth having comprehensive insurance. It's worth remembering that prices go up on February 1st.
worthless:adjective
having no value in money/valueless/unimportant or useless::
The company's shares are now virtually worthless shares.
He said the jewels were worthless fakes.She was criticized so much by her employers that she began to feel worthless.
NOTE: The opposite is invaluable/priceless.。
