What makes a gift special? Is it the price you see on the gift receipt? Or is it the look on the recipient's face when they receive it that determines the true value? What gift is worth the most?
This Christmas I was debating what to give my father. My dad is a hard person to buy for because he never wants anything. I pulled out my phone to read a text message from my mom saying that we were leaving for Christmas shopping for him when I came across a message on my phone that I had locked. The message was from my father. My eyes fell on a photo of a flower taken in Wyoming. and underneath a poem by William Blake. The flower, a lone dandelion standing against the bright blue sky, inspired me. My
dad had been reciting those words to me since I was a kid. That may even be the reason why I love writing.
I decided that those words would be my gift to my father.
I called back. I told my mom to go without me and that I already created my gift. I sent the photo of the cream-colored flower to my computer and typed the poem on top of it. As I was arranging the details another poem came to mind. The poem was written by Edgar Allan Poe; my dad recited it as much as he did the other. I typed that out as well and searched online for a background to the words of it. The poem was focused around dreaming, and after searching I found the perfect picture. The image was painted with blues and greens and purples, twisting together to create the theme and wonder of a dream. As I watched both poems passing through the printer, the white paper coloring with words that shaped my childhood. I felt that this was a gift that my father would truly appreciate.
Christmas soon arrived. The minute I saw the look on my dad's face as he unwrapped those swirling black letters carefully placed in a cheap frame, I knew I had given the perfect gift.

C. Edgar Allan Poe

44. The author made the gift by_____.
A. drawing the background by hand
B. matching the words with pictures
C. painting the letters in three colors
D. searching for the poems online
45. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To describe the gifts the author has received
B. To show how to design images for gifts.
C. To explain how computers help create gifts.
D. To suggest making gifts from one's heart.

Still seeking a destination for your weekend break? There are some places which are probably a mere walk away from your college.
King's Art Centre
A day at the Centre could mean a visit to an exhibition of the work of one of the most interesting contemporary artists on show anywhere. This weekend sees the opening of an exhibition of four local artists.
You could attend a class teaching you how to 'learn from the masters' or get more creative with paint ---- free of charge. The Centre also runs two life drawing classes for which there is a small fee.
The Botanic Garden
The Garden has over 8,000 plant species; it holds the research and teaching collection of living plants for Cambridge University.
The multi-branched Torch Aloe here is impressive. The African plant produces red flowers above blue-green leaves, and is not one to miss.
Get to the display house to see Dionaea muscipula, a plant more commonly known as the Venus Flytrap that feeds on insects and other small animals.
The Garden is also a place for wildlife-enthusiasts. Look for grass snakes in the lake. A snake called 'Hissing Sid' is regularly seen lying in the heat of the warm sun.
Byron's Pool
Many stories surround Lord Byron's time as a student of Cambridge University, Arriving in 1805, he wrote a letter complaining that it was a place of "mess and drunkenness". However, it seems as though Byron did manage to pass the time pleasantly enough. I'm not just talking about the pet bear he kept in his roans. He spent a great deal of time walking in the village.
It is also said that on occasion Byron swam naked by moonlight in the lake, which is now known as Byron's Pool. A couple of miles past Grantchester in the south Cambridgeshire countryside, the pool is surrounded by beautiful circular paths around the fields. The cries of invisible birds make the trip a lovely experience and on the way home you can drop into the village for afternoon tea. If you don't trust me, then perhaps yo u’ll take it from Virginia Woolf- ----over a century after Byron, she reportedly took a trip to swim in the same pool.
46. As mentioned in the passage, there is a small charge for_____.
A. attending the masters' class
B. working with local artists
C. seeing an exhibition
D. learning life drawing
47. "Torch Aloe" and "Venus Flytrap" are_____.
A. wildlife-enthusiasts
B. rarely-seen snakes
C. impressive plants
D. common insects
48. We can infer from the passage that Byron seemed_____.
A. to like walking
B. to fear pet bears
C. to finish university in 1805
D. to be a heavy drinker
49. In the passage Byron's Pool is described as a lake_____.
A. discovered by Virginia Woolf
B. owned by Lord Byron
C. located in Grantchester
D. surrounded by fields
50. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Unknown stories of Cambridge University.
B. Some places for weekend break
C. A way to become creative in art.
D. The colorful life in the countryside.

No one knows for sure when advertising first started. It is possible that it grew out of the discovery that some people did certain kinds of work better than others did them. That led to the concept of specialization, which means that people would specialize, or focus, on doing one specific job.
Let’s take a man we’ll call Mr. Fielder, for example. He did everything connected with farming. He planted seeds, tended the fields, and harvested and sold his crops. At the same time, he did many other jobs on the farm. However, he did n’t make the bricks for his house, cut his trees into boards, make the plows (犁), or any of other hundreds of things a farm needs. Instead, he got them from people who specialized in doing each of those things.
Suppose there was another man we shall call Mr. Plowright. Using what he knew about farming and working with iron, Mr. Plowright invented a plow that made farming easier. Mr. Plowright did not really like farming himself and wanted to specialize in making really good plows. Perhaps, he thought, other farmers will trade what they grow for one of my plows.
How did Mr. Plowright let people know what he was doing? Why, he advertised, of course. First he opened a shop and then he put up a sign outside the shop to attract customers. That sign may have been no more than a plow carved into a piece of wood and a simple arrow pointing to the shop door. It was probably all the information people needed to find Mr. Plowright and his really good plows.
Many historians believe that the first outdoor signs were used about five thousand years ago. Even before most people could read, they understood such signs. Shopkeepers would carve into stone, clay, or wood symbols for the products they had for sale.
A medium, in advertising talk, is the way you communicate your message. You might say that the first medium used in advertising was signs with symbols. The second medium was audio, or sound, although that term is not used exactly in the way we use it today. Originally, just the human voice and maybe some kind of simple in strument, such as a bell, were used to get people’s attention.
A crier, in the historical sense, is not someone who weeps easily. It is someone, probably a man, with a voice loud enough to be heard over the other noises of a city. In ancient Egypt, shopkeepers might hire such a person to spread the news about their products. Often this earliest form of advertising involved a newly arrived ship loaded with goods. Perhaps the crier described the goods, explained where they came from, and praised their quality. His job was, in other words, not too different from a TV or radio commercial in today’s world. (478 words)
51. What probably led to the start of advertisement?
A. The discovery of iron.
B. The development of farming techniques.
C. The appearance of new jobs.
D. The specialization of labor.
52. To advertise his plows, Mr. Plowright __________.
A. h ung an arrow pointing to the shop
B. praised his plows in public
C. placed a sign outside the shop
D. showed his products to the customers
53. The writer makes up the two stories of Mr. Fielder and Mr. Plowright in order to __________.
A. p redict the future of advertising
B. explain the origin of advertising
C. provide suggestions for advertising
D. expose problems in advertising
54. In ancient Egypt, a crier was probably someone who __________.
A. owned a ship
B. functioned like today’s TV or radio commercial
C. h ad the loudest voice
D. ran a shop selling goods to farmers
55. The last two paragraphs are mainly about __________.
A. the early forms of advertising
B. the basic design of advertising
C. the benefits of advertising
D. the history of advertising
D
Holidays are really important. Many of us will have childhood memories of summer holidays where we were taken away from home to experience new environments and learn in different ways.
But holidays are expensive and, for those on low wages or living on benefits, they are often unobtainable. Even the cheapest holidays require travel and other additional costs that are difficult for many families to meet.
For working parents, the long summer break can be a very difficult problem for childcare. When an annual leave allowance amounts to only five weeks, there is a need to spread this across the year. Couples can find themselves taking leave in turn in order to care for children who are on holiday. For some, this makes even an affordable family holiday difficult.
The schools that I visit in Nottingham are full of experienced staff committed to giving our children a caring and inspiring learning environment. The number of children receiving free school meals is quite large in Nottingham and many schools have breakfast clubs to make sure that children get a healthy start to the day. Most schools undertake programs of group or individual educational support. Schools also have an important role in safeguarding children’s welfare through the ongoing touch and support with their pupils. During the long summer holidays, much of this is missed.
While teachers are holidaying in the UK, many of their pupils spend the whole six weeks on the street
where they live. The lack of free school meals for six weeks can result in pressure on a family budget and an inability to afford the inspiring experiences that help children to continue their learning.
In setting out its plans for a five-term year, Nottingham City Council (委员会)is seeking to reduce the summer holiday down to four and a half weeks, with a. more balanced five terms of roughly eight weeks, each followed by a two-week break. We believe this will give real “down time" for school staff and pupils alike but will be short enough not to cause a real break in learning.
We acknowledge that this change may be difficult for some school staff, particularly whose own children are educated in other authorities. However, this must be weighed against the benefits for city children for whom we all have the greatest duty of care.
56. The passage is probably written by _____.
A. a city council member
B. a working parent
C. an inspired student
D. an experienced teacher
57. The underlined word “they" in the second paragraph refers to “____”.
A. benefits
B. environments
C. holidays
D. wages
58. It is suggested in the passage that the summer break be reduced to _____.
A. 4.5 weeks
B. 5 weeks
C. 6 weeks
D. 2 weeks
59. The plans for a shorter summer holiday will help students _____.
A. school have more school days to receive free school meals
B. benefit more from the caring and inspiring learning environment
C. obtain the cheapest holidays without additional costs
D. get a chance to spend, six weeks a term with teachers in
60. It can be inferred from the passage that _____.
A. working parents can enjoy a five-week break to care for their children
B. the suggested plans for a five-term school year can hardly be carried out
C. some school staff will say “ No" to the plans for a shorter summer holiday
D. the long summer holiday gives teachers and students real “ down time"

I read your letter yesterday. It's good that you have a high aim for yourself and you know what has prevented you from achieving high scores in exams. But you should remember that even the very best student can make mistakes sometimes. So don't put too much pressure on yourself.
As far as I am concerned, learning from your mistakes in past exams is a quick way to stop making the same mistakes next time. To begin with, if there are questions that can't be solved by yourself, you should turn to your teachers or classmates for help. What's more, during the exams you'd better make a good plan to distribute your time according to the
questions. Besides, try to leave a few minutes at the end to check your answers.
Enjoy the challenge that each new exam brings to you. I believe a good learning habit will finally help you gain success.
Best wishes。
