Soon, there was a terrible smell in the air and I thought something was wrong. I went out and saw fire coming out of my neighbor’s kitchen. So I shouted “Fire! Fire!” But no one heard or came out.
I ran quickly to my house to call 119, and then I rang my neighbor’s doorbell, knocked at the door, but there was no response. I got into the house through the window and found my neighbor sleeping in his bedroom. I woke him up and we rushed out of the house together.
We tried our best to pour water through the kitchen window, but the fire was too heavy. Luckily, the firemen came and put out the fire quickly. When my parents came back, they found I was dirty and tired. After my neighbor told them the whole story, they were happy and said I was a brave boy.

Animals, including insects, do not have a language like ours. They do not talk to
each other in words or sentences. But if we watch them, we can see that they do have ways to communicate.
Can you see the rabbit’s tail which is moving up and down? When rabbits see this white tail moving up and down, they are warning each other to run. They know that there is danger. The rabbit has told them something without making a sound. Many other animals use this kind of language. When a cobra(眼镜蛇) is angry, it raises its sound. It has given them a signal and makes itself look fierce. This warns other animals. When a bee has found some food, it goes back to its home. It cannot tell the other bees where the food is by speaking to them, but it does a little dance in the air. This tells the bees where the food is. Some animals say things by making a sound. A dog barks, for example when a stranger comes near. A cat purrs when pleased. Some birds make several different sounds, each with its own meaning.
Sometimes we human beings speak in the same way. For example, we make sounds like “Oh” or “Ah!” when we are frightened or pleased or when we drop something on our toes. But we have something that no animals have—a large number of words which have the meanings, information in words and sentences, which no other animals can do. No other animals have so wonderful a language as we have. ( )25. A rabbit uses its tail to _______.

One of China’s four great inventions was gunpowder(火药). In one old story, a Chinese inventor was looking for a medicine to give him a longer life, but found gunpowder instead. An inventor later put the gunpowder into a piece of bamboo. Then fireworks were born.
At first, fireworks were often used for their noise more than for their light. People thought the noise would drive away bad luck, and so fireworks were used during important festivals to bring good luck. Later, people began to like fireworks for their beautiful light. Until the 19th century, the light from fireworks was usually white or yellow. However, inventors began adding different chemicals(化学物质) to the gunpowder to produce different colours.
Today, most fireworks in the world are still made by hand with gunpowder, paper and glue. This is very dangerous work, for the gunpowder is very easy to set off. However, if the workers take care, they will be safe.
