There was a little boy named Sammy. He was good at his studies and kind to everyone. All the teachers and students in his school liked him very much. 61
Another boy, Timmy, was in the same class as Sammy. 62 He always liked to play during school hours. He always tried to put Sammy down (贬低) before other kids in the class. But no matter what he did, Sammy’s grades kept getting better and better.
On his eighth birthday, Sammy got a nice pen as a gift from his parents. This was a very beautiful pen and it could help him write very fast. 63 So when he saw the pen, he liked it very much. When everyone else was out, Timmy opened Sammy’s bag and took out the pen. Then he hid it inside his bag and went out to have lunch. When Sammy came back and could not find his pen, he told the teacher about it. 64 Soon it was found in Timmy’s bag and the angry teacher decided to teach him a good lesson. When Sammy saw Timmy cry, he took pity on the boy. He asked his teacher not to take any action against Timmy since his stolen pen was found. 65 He asked for forgiveness from his teacher and Sammy.
From that day on, he became friends with Sammy and gradually changed himself to be as good
18. The kids in this village wear dirty, ragged clothes. They sleep beside cows and sheep in huts made of sticks and mud. They have no school. Yet they all can chant the English alphabet, and some can make words.
The key to their success: 20 tablet computers(平板电脑) dropped off in their Ethiopian village in February by a U.S. group called One Laptop Per Child.
The goal is to find out whether kids using today’s new technology can teach themselves to read in places where no schools or teachers exist. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers analyzing the project data say they’re already amazed. “What I think has already happened is that the kids have already learned more than they would have in one year of kindergarten,” said Matt Keller, wh o runs the Ethiopia program.
The fastest learner—and the first to turn on one of the tablets—is 8-year-old Kelbesa Negusse. The device’s camera was disabled to save memory, yet within weeks Kelbesa had figured out its workings and made the camera work. He called himself a lion, a marker of accomplishment in Ethiopia.
With his tablet, Kelbasa rearranged the letters HSROE into one of the many English animal names he knows. Then he spelled words on his own. “Seven months ago he didn’t know any English. That’s unbelievable,” said Keller.
The project aims to get kids to a stage called “deep reading,” where they can read to learn. It won’t be in Amharic, Ethiopia’s first language, but in English, which is widely seen as the ticket to higher paying jobs.
27. How does the Ethiopia program benefit the kids in the village?
A. It trains teachers for them.
B. It contributes to their self-study.
C. It helps raise their living standards.
D. It provides funds for building schools.
28. What can we infer from Keller’s words in Paragraph 3?
A. They need more time to analyze data.
B. More children are needed for the research.
C. He is confident about the future of the project.
D. The research should be carried out in kindergartens.
29. It amazed Keller that with the tablet Kelbesa could _______.
A. learn English words quickly.
B. draw pictures of animals.
C. write letters to researchers.
D. make phone calls to his friends.
30. What is the aim of the project?
A. To offer Ethiopians higher paying jobs.
B. To make Amharic widely used in the world.
C. To help Ethiopian kids read to learn in English.
D. To assist Ethiopians in learning their first language.
27. B 28. C 29. A 30. C
根据第三段第一句“The goal is to find out whether kids using today’s new technolo gy can teach themselves to read in places where no schools or teachers exist.”
根据倒数第二段第二句“Then he spelled words on his own.”和其末尾凯勒所说的“Seven months ago he didn’t know any English. That’s unbelievable”可知,七个月前Kelbesa不懂英语,而现在可以重新排列字母HSROE,把它们重新组合成自己所知道的一种动物的名字,然后自己拼写单词,因此A项正确。
【30题详解】
根据最后一段可知这个项目旨在让埃塞俄比亚的孩子们通过深度阅读达到学习英语的目的,故选C项。
