Harper Lee (1926—2016) was an American novelist widely known for To Kill a Mockingbird (published in 1960), which won the 1961 Pulitzer Prize and has become a classic of modern American literature. The 1962 film adaptation starring Gregory Peck won three Academy Awards.
For decades, the book was Lee’s only major work of published fiction, but it was hugely influential for generations of U. S. readers. It has sold more than 10 million copies, and is one of the most widely taught novels in the U. S. schools. In 2007 she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her contributions to literature.
Lee wanted to live a simple life and was never comfortable with the attention the novel won her, and she practically disappeared from public life after it appeared. The world, however, continued waiting for a new novel from her, and on occasion she suggested that she was working on another story.
In 2015, a book did come out. Go Set a Watchman was more of a first draft, featuring Scout, the young girl who was the main character of To Kill a Mockingbird. Go Set a Watchman tells a story of Scout as an adult.
Though Lee moved to New York in 1949, she spent many years guarding her privacy in Monroeville, which served as the clear inspiration for the setting in To Kill a Mockingbird.
In 2007, Lee suffered a stroke (中风), but recovered and later settled in Monroeville permanently to care for her sister. Alice, who died in 2014. In a new study, researchers have discovered bottled water sold in stores can contain 10 to 100 times more hits of plastic than previously estimated—nanoplastics(纳米塑料) so tiny that they cannot be seen under a microscope.
At one-thousandth the average width of a human hair, nanoplastics are so small that they can move through the tissues of the digestive tract (道) or lungs into the bloodstream, spreading potentially noxious man-made chemicals throughout the body and into cells. One liter of water contains an average of 240,000 plastic particles from seven types of plastics, of which 90% are identified as nanoplastics and the rest are microplastics, according to the new study.
According to Sherri Mason, a researcher, the new finding strengthens long-held expert advice to drink tap water from glass or stainless steel containers to reduce exposure. That advice extends to other foods and drinks packaged in plastic.
Nanoplastics arc the most worrying type of plastic pollution for human health. “The chemicals can be carried to your liver, kidney, and brain and even make their way to an unborn child,” said Mason.
“Based on other studies, we expected most of the microplastics in bottled water would come from outflow of the plastic bottle itself, which is typically made of PET plastic,” said Qian, a doctoral student at Columbia University. Studies have found that particles of this plastic can be broken off by repeatedly opening and closing the cap of the bottle, crushing the bottle or subjecting it to heat, such as in a car.
“We can avoid consuming foods and drinks in plastic containers. We can wear clothing made from, natural fabrics and buy consumer products made from natural materials,” said Jane Houlihan, an expert in environmental
health. “We can estimate the plastic in our daily lives and find other choices whenever possible.” Several studies have also reported lower microplastic levels in tap water.
14.What does the underlined word “noxious” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Harmful.B.Beneficial.C.Harmless.D.Dynamic. 15.What does Jane Houlihan suggest doing to reduce plastic consumption in daily life?
A.Increasing the use of water containers.
B.Purchasing products made from man-made materials.
C.Choosing natural fabrics and materials whenever possible.
D.Avoiding products packaged in glass or stainless steel containers.
16.Which can be the best title for the text?
A.The Health Risks of Nanoplastics B.The Benefits of Drinking Tap Water
C.New Study on Bottled Water Pollution D.How to Reduce Plastic Use in Daily Life

Thanks to technology development, healthcare services are more accessible than ever Hospitals have been committed to digitally enabled care going mainstream and more health services have gone online than ever before. But are older people who don’t use the Internet being left behind?
A study by Lancaster University found that lots of older people still avoid online life completely or use the Internet only on occasion. There are various reasons why older people don’t use the Internet. For many, a lack of confidence in their own ability to use technology raised fears about security particularly with online banking.
Whatever the reasons are, one of the biggest concerns about an offline older generation is the likelihood that they will miss out on big developments in health accessibility, especially as many useful health services move online. Madeleine Starr MBE, director of business development and innovation at Carers UK, said, “Though many of us use technology in our everyday lives, seven out of ten people don’t yet think of technology when it comes to caring. So, many are not yet realizing the benefits of this technology. Accessing appointments, ordering prescriptions(处方) or having consultations online can all help reduce visits to doctors and unplanned hospital visits.”
In an aging society, the Internet can make a huge amount of difference to older people requiring a bit of extra support and those caring for them. “Advice from specialist websites or symptom checkers is great for those who are unsure it their symptoms are cause for concern or find it difficult to get to a doctor’s appointment. Technology is making it easier to offer remote care and support for older people, helping them remain independent. The information on the Internet can prevent older people from taking their health into their own hands,” adds Caroline Abrahams, charity director at Age UK.
However, services need to remain accessible to those who aren’t online. While it’s fine to support older people getting online, those who choose not to or cannot do so, for whatever reason, should not be treated like second-class citizens. They must still be able to access services in other ways that suit them.
17.What is the main purpose of paragraph 1?
A.To introduce a topic.B.To list some important facts.
C.To express the main idea of the text.D.To introduce new advances in science.
18.What might be the big concern about offline older people?
A.They will suffer from terrible loneliness.
B.They will face risks from online banking.
C.They will fail to benefit from advanced online healthcare.
D.They will underestimate the role of modern technology in healthcare.
19.Why does the author mention Caroline Abrahams’ words in paragraph 4?
A.To stress the popularity of the Internet.
B.To reveal technology is developing very fast now.
C.To indicate the big challenges an aging society faces.
D.To show the Internet is of great importance to older people.
20.What is the message the author wants to convey in the last paragraph?
A.Health services should get support from professionals.
B.Older people should be encouraged to place their health first.
C.Older people should receive some training in using the Internet.
D.Health services should be offered in ways that suit different people.

Dancing is natural and almost any child can dance. However, why do so many people find it hard to dance when they reach their teens or adulthood? 26
Most people have heard the words “Dance like nobody is watching”. 27 When we’re learning something new, we hate having an audience watching our silly mistakes. Actually everyone else is too busy worrying about their own mistakes. Chances are that you’re not the only one struggling with the steps!
We all have patterns of muscle memory. Your body likes doing repetitive movements that it doesn’t have to think about. 28 Your brain may understand, but it can take a while to direct your limbs to interpret these new and unfamiliar movements. Be patient with yourself and understand it’s the way your body works.
29 If you’ve never danced before, the complex rhythms and fast footwork of flamenco would be a big challenge as the first dance style. If you’re inflexible, I wouldn’t recommend starting cold with ballet, either. Instead, do some yoga first to get your body used to the new demands ballet will place on it.
A lack of rhythm is the biggest obstacle to learning to dance. However, it can be overcome with enough practice. 30 Then learn to dance when you begin to feel the beat. Dance can be a very rewarding and enjoyable hobby. Just be patient with yourself and learn to dance.
A.It’s human nature to dislike looking foolish
B.You’ll be able to do them almost without thinking.
C.If you have no rhythm, try to master dance steps first.
D.Learning a musical instrument is a good way to learn rhythm.
E.Dance requires you to move your arms and legs in unusual ways.
F.The other possibility is that you picked a style of dance that doesn’t suit you.
G.There are many things that can hold people back when they try to learn dancing.

A Meaningful Clean-up
Last Saturday, our class went to the riverside of Fenjiang River to collect garbage with the aim of preserving the beauty of this river.
We arrived early in the morning with cleaning tools. On arriving there, we split ourselves into smaller groups and started working. Some cleaned the riverbanks, and some focused on the streets and parks. We worked hard for several hours and the riverside became clean and tidy once again.
This experience was tiring but rewarding. I felt a deep sense of accomplishment and pride as we made a great difference. It was a day well spent, not just for the city, but for our collective spirit.
A Meaningful Clean-up
Last Saturday, our entire class embarked on a meaningful community service activity-cleaning up the trash along the Fenjing River. Our aim was to protect the environment and raise awareness about the importance of keeping our city clean.
Armed with gloves and trash bags, we set out early in the morning. We are divided into groups, picking up litter, separating the recyclable, and ensuring no trace of waste remained. Despite the heat, everyone worked diligently, determined to make a difference.
Personally, I felt a sense of accomplishment and pride. It was a reminder of how even small actions can make
a big difference. I hope more students will join us in future environmental initiatives.
