Once small farmers in Masii, a remote village in Kenya, have picked their crops, all they can do is wait until a buyer trucks through. The system works fairly well for beans and corn, but mangoes-the area’s other main crop-spoil (腐烂) more quickly. If the trader is late, they rot.
However, a simple coating could change that. A company, SmartTech, has created a product that doubles the shelf life of fresh produce, enabling farmers to access far-off, larger markets. More time forfresh produce on grocers’ shelves also means less food waste-a $2.6 trillion problem, according to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
James Rogers, CEO of SmartTech, wanted to solve the problem for food much in the same way that oxide barriers preventing rust (锈) have achieved for steel. Fortunately, researchers have found when plants made the jump from water to land, they developed cutin(蜡质), a barrier which is made of fatty acids that link together to form a seal around the plant, helping keep water in.
The cutin was such a grand strategy that today you’ll still find it across the plant kingdom. SmartTech discovered through researches that an orange can last longer than a strawberry not so much because of the thickness of its skin, but because of the difference in the arrangement of those cutin molecules (分子)on the surface. After extensive trials, Rogers and his team developed a natural and tasteless protective coating from plant material-stems, leaves and skins. The product extends the sweet spot between ripening and rot. And best of all, the treated produce doesn’t require refrigeration.
“SmartTech has huge potential to turn poor farmers in Africa into commercial farmers,” says Rogers. “That means more money in pockets, and more food in stomachs.” But whether the company can cost-effectively reach small farmers in far-off areas still remains a challenge.

For years, life went something like this: We’d grow up in one place, head off to college, and then find a city to get a job and live there for a few years. The final goal was to find somewhere to settle down, buy a house, start a family, and begin the whole cycle all over again. But now some people are increasingly choosing to move from city to city throughout their entire lives, sometimes as frequently as every month.
Just ask Alex Chatzieleftheriou, who has had a front-row seat watching this evolution unfold. Six years ago, he launched a startup called Blueground that rents out beautifully designed, fully furnished apartments for a month at a time, at rates that are cheaper than hotels. And it aims to make each one feel unique and comfortable, rather than standardized, like what you might find in a traditional hotel.
Today, the company has 3,000 properties(房地产) in six U.S. cities, along with Dubai, Istanbul, London, Paris, and Chatzieleftheriou’s native Athens, and a staff of 400. With the helpof the Series B round of funding, the company landed $ 50 million, plus its previous total of $ 28 million, to continue its rapid expansion. It hopes to have 50,000 properties in 50 cities over the next three years.
Chatzieleftheriou first came up with the idea for Blueground while he was working as a management consultant for McKinsey. “The accommodation of choice for consultants is the hotel,” he says. “I had to spend five
years in hotel rooms, living in 12 different cities. I loved seeing the world, but I didn’t love feeling like I didn’t have a home.” And what’s more, hotels aren’t a particularly cost-effective solution for companies either. In Chatzieleftheriou’s case, McKinsey sometimes paid $ 10,000 or more for him to stay in a major city for a month.
8. What does the author intend to tell in the first paragraph?
A. A new lifestyle is appearing.
B. Life is just like a circle for people.
C. Most people are used to an easy life.
D. People live in different places in life.
9. What is the goal of Blueground?
A. To compete with hotels.
B. To create standardized hotels.
C. To make renters feel at home.
D. To rent out long-term apartments.
10. What do we know about Blueground?
A. It got a total investment of $ 78 million.
B. Its business is anything but satisfying.
C. It expanded to every corner of the world.
D. It has 50,000 properties in 50 cities.
11. What does the last paragraph focus on?

Keeping curious kids from disrupting wildlife
Interacting with the wild, naturally curious kids tend to collect seashells at the beach or keep small wildlife as pets.____16____So how to help kids protect the wild while enjoying spending time outsides? Here are alternatives for some of the most common outdoor behavior no-nos.
Take an interest, not things. Kids show interest in picking flowers, rocks, or shells outdoors. They’re part of wildlife's habitat and play an important role.____17____Let kids explore with a magnifying glass (放大镜)instead of their curious fingers. Let whatever they find outside stay outside.
____18____It seems a fun idea to throw pieces of bread to ducks. Animals have unique dietary needs that are different from humans. Eating human food can make them sick or become dependent on human food. Bears are an example of animals that often have to be killed after developing a taste for human food.
Admire animal afar, not disrupt nearby. The urge to take a photo with a squirrel, bird, or slow-moving turtle can be strong for kids.____19____Instead, remind kids to stay away and show them how to use a camera's zoom button, or just admire with their eyes.
Take well-worn paths, not off-road romps (嬉戏). Kicking piles of leaves, stepping on bushes, and walking through forested areas can unintentionally scare wildlife. If surprised animals defend their homes, everyone could get hurt. Nobody likes having a guest come in and destroy their home and act rudely.____20____
A. Keep snacks away from animals.
B. Share food if animals are hungry.
C. Exposure to them develops kids’ love and curiosity.
D. The same rule applies to visiting wildlife in their homes.
E. Animals rely on plants for hiding; rocks and shells, for homes.
F. Approaching animals disrupts what they do for survival, such as eating.
G. Despite innocent purposes, kids’ curiosity accidentally damages the wild.

Last term, our school holds a math competition. To my surprise, I got the highest mark. To be honest, I felt very proudly. I was overjoyed. When one of my classmate asked me a question, I thought it was too easy and I was impatient with explaining them. As result, some of my classmates began to thinking badly of me. When I was having classes, I was absent-minded. By and by, I fell behind. When I became aware for this, I felt regretful. As a saying goes, pride goes after a fall. This experience made me to realize we should be modest, no matter whatever progress we make.
第二节书面表达(满分25分)
52.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

A farmer had some puppies(小狗崽)to sell. When He was putting up a sign advertising(做广告)the puppies, a little boy came up with shining eyes and said he wanted to buy a little dog.
The farmer patiently replied that these puppies cost a lot of money because they came from fine parents.
The boy dropped his head for a moment. Then reaching deep into his pocket, he pulled out a handful of change(零钱). “I’ve got thirty-nine cents. Is that enough to take a look?”
The farmer nodded and let out a whistle(口哨).
Out from the doghouse and down the ramp(斜坡)ran the dog mother followed by four little balls of fur. The little boy pressed his face against the chain link fence. His eyes danced with delight.
The ONE that took the lead caught the boy's eyes. Clearly, it was the biggest and strongest of the all. It was pure white. The boy stared at the moving snowball as it raced closer and closer. Amazingly, it stopped just at the foot of the boy. “It seems strong and clever, so it would be a good gift for Mary,” the boy decided.
