2019年CATTI二级笔译英译汉真题及参考答案【第一篇】So where there is financial connection, we see that rapid improvements in quality of life can quickly follow. In our modern context, there are several important channels to achieving this greater financial connectivity. I want to highlight two today: increased capital mobility and increased financial inclusion.First, enabling capital to flow more freely. Allowing capital to flow across borders can help support inclusive growth. Right now, foreign direct investment —FDI — is only 1.9 percent of GDP in developing countries. Before the global financial crisis, it was at 2.5 percent. Making progress on major infrastructure needs will require capital flows to rise again and to be managed safely.Greater openness to capital flows can also bring down the cost of finance, improve the efficiency of the financial sector, and allow capital to support productive investments and new jobs.Challenges that come with opening up capital markets. Thankfully, we know from experience the elements that are required for success. These include sound financial regulation, transparent rules for investment, and attention to fiscal sustainability. We also need increased financial inclusion. A few numbers: close to half of the adult population in low and middle-income Asia-Pacific economies do not have a bank account. Less than 10 percent have ever borrowed from a financial institution. And yet, we know that closing the finance gap is an “economic must-have” for nations to thrive in the 21st century. IMF analysis shows that if the least financially inclusive countries in Asia narrowed the finance gap to the level of Thailand — an emerging market economy — the poverty rate in those countries could be reduced by nearly 4 percent. How can we get there? In part, through policies that enable more women and rural citizens to access financial services. The financial gender gap for women in developing countries is about 9 percent and has remained largely unchanged since 2011.There is no silver bullet, but we know that fintech can play a catalyzing role.In Cambodia, for example, strong public-private partnerships in supporting mobile finance has led to a tripling in the number of micro-financial institutions since 2011. These institutions have now provided loans to over 2 million new borrowers, representing nearly 20 percent of the adult population. Many of these citizens had never had a bank account. Now they can save for the future and perhaps even start a business of their own. These are ideas that can work everywhere. But countries have to be willing to partner and learn from each other. That is one of the major reasons why last October, the IMF and World Bank launched the Bali Fintech Agenda. The agenda lays out key principles — from developing financial markets to safeguarding financial integrity — that can help each nation as it strives for greater financial inclusion.【第一篇参考答案】哪里形成了金融联系,当地的生活质量就会很快改善。

CATTI二级笔译实务模拟题

CATTI二级笔译实务模拟题

全国翻译专业资格(水平)考试英语二级笔译实务模拟试题Section 1: English-Chinese Translation (英译汉)This section consists of two parts, Part A - "Compulsory Translation" and Part B - "Choice of Two Translations" consisting of two sections "Topic 1" and "Topic 2". For the passage in Part A and your choice of passages in Part B, translate the underlined portions, including titles, into Chinese. Above your translation of Part A, write "Compulsory Translation" and above your translation from Part B, write "Topic 1" or "Topic 2" and write your translations on the ANSWER SHEET (60 points, 100 minutes).Part A Compulsory Translation (必译题)(30 points)The Dreadlock DeadlockIn the fall of 1993 Christopher Polk transferred from FedEx's hub in Indianapolis to take over a delivery route in Flatbush District, Brooklyn, N.Y. But moving to the country's largest community of Caribbean and African immigrants only precipitated a far more profound journey. "I was becoming culturally aware of the history of the black people," says Polk, now 31, "and that gave me these spiritual questions." His answer came providentially, by way of a music video featuring Lord Jamal, who raps about the Rastafarian belief in the sanctity of dreadlocks - the cords of permanently interlocked strands first worn by African chiefs perhaps 6,000 years ago.Now a practicing Rastafarian, Polk sports thick garlands that gently cascade onto his shoulders. "Your hair is your covenant," he says. "Once you grow your locks, it puts you on a path."Unfortunately, that path was a collision course with Federal Express's grooming policy, which requires men to confine their dos to "a reasonable style." After years of deliberation, Polk's bosses gave him a choice: shear his locks or be transferred to a lower-paid job with no customer contact. He refused both options and was terminated in June 2000.His tale is not unique. Although Rastafarians number about 5,000 nationally, today dreadlocks, twists or braids are at the height of fashion, nearly as common as Afros were 30 years ago. If Afros symbolized militancy, dreads signal a more spiritual self-declaration, a figurative locking with African ancestors. As Stanford professor Kennell Jackson, who teaches a course called "African Coiffures and Their New World Legacies," puts it, "There's a divinity to these locks."Divine or not, some employers consider them unacceptably outré. Six other New York-area FedEx employees have lost their jobs because of dreadlocks. They have sued, alleging religious discrimination; the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and New York's attorney general have also charged FedEx with violating religious protections in the Civil Rights Act.The dreadlock deadlock may be easing. FedEx altered its policy slightly a few weeks ago: in the future, observant employees who seek a waiver may wear their locks tucked under uniform hats, says a company spokeswoman. The concession isn't enough to settle the lawsuits yet. The EEOC also wantsreinstatement for the fired drivers, says trial attorney Michael Ranis. He's optimistic. Some new styles, he knows, grow more appealing over time.Part B Choice of Two Translations (二选一题)(30 points)Topic 1 (选题一)Eurasians: The New Face of AsiaFusion is in, not only as an abstract fashion concept, but in that most grounded of realities: mixed-blood people who walk, talk, and produce even more multiracial progeny. Most strange of all, these hybrids are finding themselves hailed as role models for vast masses in Asia with no mixed blood at all. "When I think of Asia, I don't necessarily think of people who look like me," says Declan Wong, a Chinese-Dutch-American actor and producer, "But somehow we've become the face that sells the new Asia."So maybe Asia's Eurasian craze is driven by the theories of that whitest of white men, economist Adam Smith. As the world gets smaller, we look for a global marketing mien, a one-size-fits-all face that helps us sell Nokia cell phones and Palmolive shampoo across the world."For any business, you can't think locally anymore," says Paul Lau, general manager at Elite Model Management in Hong Kong, who has built up a stable of Eurasians for his internationally minded clients. "At the very least, you need to think regionally. Ideally, you should think globally." A global image helps sell products, even if no one but Filipinos would ever want to buy duck-fetus eggs or Thais the most pungent variety of shrimp paste. Yanto Zainal, president of Macs909, a boutique ad agency in Jakarta, used all indos for a campaign for the local Matahari department store chain. "The store wanted to promote a more cosmopolitan image," he says. "Indos have an international look but can still be accepted as Indonesian."Channel V, the Asia-wide music television channel, was one of the first to broadcast the message of homogenized hybridism. "We needed a messenger that would fit in from Tokyo to the Middle East." Says Jonnifer Seeto, regional sales marketing manager for the channel, which began beaming its border-busting images in 1994. Star Veejay Asha Gill personifies the global look. When asked what her ethnic heritage is, Gill, a Malaysian citizen, simply shrugs. "Oh, who knows," she says. "I'm half Punjabi, mixed with some English, a little French and dribs and drabs of God knows what else." The 29-year-old speaks crisp British English, fluent Malay, and a smidgen of Punjabi. She grew up in a Kuala Lumpur neighborhood that was mostly Chinese, attended an English-speaking school and was pals with Malay and Indian kids. Gill's Channel V show, broadcast in English, has a strong following in Malaysia, Japan and the United Arab Emirates. "I'm Hitler's worst nightmare," she says. "My ethnicity and profession make me a global person who can't be defined in just one category."Topic 2 (选题二)MatterLook at all the things around us: chairs, desks, cupboards, papers and pensin our classroom; motor cars, bicycles and buses in the streets; trees, plants and animals in the countryside; birds, aeroplanes and clouds in the sky; f ishes, seaweeds and corals in the sea; stars, the moon and the sun in outer space. These and all other things including the human body, are examples of matter. Matter is anything that takes up space and has weight. What is Matter Made of?Since ancient times, learned men or philosophers have thought about matter and what it is made up of. One group of philosophers thought that matter was made up of a substance called "hyle" (实质). Another group of philosophers said that matter was made up of four substances, namely earth, water, air and fire. A third group believed that matter was made up of very tiny particles which were too small to be seen. These particles were so small that they could never be further divided into smaller particles. They gave the particles the name atoms which means "those which cannot be divided." The difference between the various kinds of atoms and the ways in which they were joined were supposed to result in the different kinds of matter. All these ideas arose purely from the mind and were not based on investigation. For many years, people believed in the second idea. But actually it is the third idea that is nearer to our present concept of matter.Dalton's Atomic TheoryIn the early nineteenth century, Dalton, an English school teacher, stated in this atomic theory that matter was made up of tiny, indivis ible particles, which he also called atoms. His laboratory work showed him that atoms could neither be divided into smaller parts nor could they be destroyed. He pictured matter as being made up of tiny solid spherical atoms. Today the idea of the atoms has been accepted. But further work has shown that contrary to Dalton's findings, atoms are made up of even smaller particles.Section 2: Chinese-English Translation (汉译英)This section consists of two parts, Part A —— "Compulsory Translation" and Part B - "Choice of Two Translations" consisting of two sections "Topic 1" and "Topic 2". For the passage in Part A and your choice of passages in Part B, translate the underlined portions, including titles, into English. Above your translation of Part A, write "Compulsory Translation" and above your translation from Part B, write "Topic 1" or "Topic 2" and write your translations on the ANSWER SHEET (40 points, 80 minutes).Part A Compulsory Translation

(3)Now which are the animals really to be pitied in captivity? First, those clever beings whose lively urge for activity can find no outlet behind the bars of the cage. This is most conspicuous, even for the uninitiated, in the case of animals which, when living in a free state, are accustomed to roaming about widely. Owing to this frustrated desire, foxes and wolves housed, in many old-fashioned zoos, in cages which are far too small, are among the most pitiable of all caged animals.Though pinioned swans generally seem happy, under proper care, by hatching and tearing their young without any trouble, at migration time things become different: they repeatedly swim to the lee side of the pond, in order to have the whole extent of its surface at their disposal, trying to take off. Again and again the grand preparations end in a pathetic flutter of their half wings; a truly sorry picture! This, however, rarely awakens the pity of the zoo visitor, least of all when such an originally highly intelligent and mentally alert animal has deteriorated, in confinement, into a crazy idiot, a very caricature of its former self. Sentimental old ladies, the fanatical sponsors of the societies for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, have no compunction in keeping a grey parrot in a relatively small cage or even chained to a perch. Together with the large corvines, the parrotsare probably the only birds which suffer from that state of mind, common to prisoners, namely, boredom.1. In fact, more Americans live in the suburbs of large metropolitan areas than in the cities themselves. The Bureau of the Census regards any area with more than 2,500 people as an urban area, and does not consider boundaries of cities and suburbs.According to the Bureau, the political boundaries are less significant than the social and economic relationships and the transportation and communication systems that integrate a locale. The term used by the Bureau for an integrated metropolis is an MSA, which stands for Metropolitan Statistical Area. In general, an MSA is any area that contains a city and its surrounding suburbs and has a total population of 50,000 or more.At the present time, the Bureau reports more than 280 MSAs, which together account for 75 percent of the US population. In addition, the Bureau recognizes 18 megapolises, that is, continuous adjacent metropolitan areas. One of the most obvious megapolises includes a chain of hundreds of cities and suburbs across 10 states on the East Coast from Massachusetts to Virginia, including Boston,New York, and Washington, D.C. The Bureau of the Census is located there.“what does the middleman do but add to the price of goods in the shops?”Such remarks are aimed at the intermediate operations between manufacturers and final customers. This practice usually attracts a lot of attention from the public and the press and the operation most talked about is what is often called wholesaling. The wholesaler buys goods in large quantities from the manufacturers and sells them in smaller parcels to retailers, and for this service his selling price to the retailer is raised several percent higher. But his job is made more difficult by retail demand not necessarily running level with manufacturers’production. Because he adjusts or regulates the flow of goods by holding stock until required, he frees the manufacturer, to some extent, from the effect on production of changing demand and having to bear the whole risk. The manufacture can then keep up a steady production flow, and the retailer has no need to hold heavy stocks, who can call on the wholesaler for supplies any time. This wholesale function id like thatof a valve in a water pipe. The middleman also bears part of the risk that would otherwise fall on the manufacturer and also the retailer. The wholesaler provides a purely commercial service, for which he is too well rewarded. But the point that is missed by many people is that the wholesaler is not just someone adding to the cost of goods. It is true one could eliminate the wholesaler but one would still be left with his function: that of making sure that goods find their way to the people who want them.21. “Middleman”in the passage almost equals to all the following in meaning EXCEPT _____.A. go-betweenB. intermediaryC. manufacturerD. wholesaler22. “This practice”in Paragraph 1 most probably refers to the fact that the middleman _____.A. increases the prices in the shopsB. buys from you and sells to meC. aims remarks at manufacturersD. interferes with end user customers23. Each passage is followed by five questions or unfinished statements. For each question, there are four choices marked A), B), C), D). You should choose the best answer then mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage OneMany teenagers feel that the most important people in their lives are their friends. They believe that their family members, especially their parents, do not know them as well as their friends do. In large families, it is quite often for brothers and sisters to fight with each other and then they can only go to their friends for advice.Of course, it is important for teenagers to have a nice and warm family. It is very necessary for them to have one or several good friends; they usually spend a lot of time talking among themselves on the telephone. This communication is very importa nt in children’s growing up, because friends can discuss something difficult to say to their family members. However, parents often try to choose their children’s friends for them. Some parents may even stop their children from meeting their good friends. The question of “which friends to choose” is an interesting one. Have you ever thought of the following questions?---- Who chooses your friends?---- Do you choose your friends or your friends choose you?---- Have you got a good friend or your parents do n’t like?---- Why do parents want to choose friends for you?......You can always discuss these questions with your friends.51. Many teenagers think their ____ know them better than their parents do.A) good friends B) brothers and sistersC) family members D) important friends alone52. When brothers and sisters fight with each other, ____.A)the parents don’t care about themB)the parents ask them to go to their friendsC)the parents often help themD)their friends are able to help them53. When teenagers stay alone, the usual way of talking together is ____.A)to go to their friendsB)B) to talk with their parents on the telephoneC)to talk with their friends on the telephoneD)D) to discuss something with their family members54. To the teenagers, friends are different from their parents in that ____.A)friends are growing up togetherB)they can talk to their friends about what they won’t tell their parentsC)friends talk about different things from those of parentsD)friends are difficult to talk about55. After reading the passage, which of the following sentences do you think is RIGHT?A)The writer has not drawn any conclusion in this passage.B)Parents should like everything their children enjoy.C)Children can choose everything they like.D)Most parents dislikes their children’s friendsPassage TwoBusiness people often spend time and money in improving their ability in using foreign languages in order to be able to communicate with other business people from around the world. Language, of course, is very important but it is only half the problem. When we are doing business with people of other cultures, there are always rules that we can’t notice easily. It is all too easy to “put your foot in it” by making mistakes which can make your foreign friends unhappy. In the West, business cards are given a quick look and put into the pocket. In Japan, they are highly regarded, carefully looked at and left on the table during a business meeting. In Britain, most business meetings would include a joke. In many other countries, this would be very rare.Small talk and relationship building are considered very important in some parts of the world; people talk about the weather, the wine and other small things before they begin to talk about business. In other places, people get down to business immediately. Therefore, we should always remember that national backgrounds, personal backgrounds and even company culture all play in successful communication with people from different cultures.56. In order to communicate with other people from around the world, ____.A)one must know the importance of languageB)one must solve half the problem before the talkC)it is not enough for business people to know a foreign languageD)it is most important for business people to spend much time and money57. If you are doing business with people of other cultures, you should ____.A)pay attention to certain rulesB)not let your foreign friends notice your footC)notice your unhappy foreign friendsD)not go into their different culture by mistakes58. Which of the following is NOT true?A)Business cards are treated as an important thing in JapanB)People in different countries may do business in different ways.C)Jokes are not common at business meetings in many countries.D)Business people from Britain are always joking at business meetings.59. “Small talk” in Par agraph 5 might refer to ____.A)talk about very important thingsB)talk about things that don’t have a direct relation with business itselfC)the weather, the wine, the cards, the culture and personal backgroundsD)the relationship between people60. Which of the following may be the best topic for this passage?A) Language and Culture C) Why Cultures Are DifferentB) Culture and Communication D) How People in Japan Do BusinessPassage ThreeHave you ever heard of the sayings. “Never judge a book by its cover”? This is a good rule to follow when you are trying to judge the intelligence of others. Some people have minds that shine only in certain situation. A young man with an unusual gift in writing may find himself unable to say a single word in front of a pretty girl. When he speaks, he may not be able to find the right words. But don’t make the mistakes of thinking him stupid; with a pen and paper, he can express himself better than anybody else.Other people may fool you into thinking highly of their intelligence by putting up a good front. A student who listens carefully and takes notes in class is found to make a favorable impression on his teachers. But when it comes to exams, he may score near the bottom of the class. It all boil s down to this: you can’t judge someone by appearance. The only way to determine a person’s intelligence is to get to know him or her. Then you can see how he or she deals with different situations. The more situations you see, the better your judgment is likely to be. So take your time. Don’t judge the book by its cover.61. “Never judge a book by its cover” is nearest in meaning to ____.A)“never allow the cover to judge a book”B)“both the book and its cover do not accept any judgments”C)“the book cover can never be understand.”D)“the book cover can’t assure you of its good contents”62. The passage suggests that ____.A) a person who is unable to speak always writes wellB) a good writer will find himself unable to speak wellC) a good writer may not be a good speakerD) a good writer is always a good speaker63. According to the passage, a student who listen carefully and take notes in class ____.A)may not score high in examsB)will score better in examsC)is an intelligent studentD)will not be a good student64 “It all boils down to this” most probably means ____.A)“all the above are useless”B)“all the above can be said in this one sentence”C)“this is the result of our discussion”D)“this is all we have discussed”65.The main idea of this passage is that we shouldn’t ____.A)judge a book by its coverB)make a mistake of thinking a young man stupidC)judge a person’s intelligence by his appearanceD)think too highly of a student’s intelligencePassage FourPersonal computers and the Internet give people new choices about how to spend their time. This new technology will let them stay in closer touch with those they care most about. I know from personal experience.E-mail makes it easy for me to work at home, which is where I now spend most weekends and evenings. My working hours aren’t much sh orter than they once were, but I spend fewer of them at the office. This lets me share more time with my young daughter than I might have if she’d been born before electronic mail (e-mail) became such a practical tool. With e-mail, I just write one note about my experience, at my convenience, instead of calling my friends one by one, I address it to them. They can read my message when they have time, and read only as much as they want to do. They can reply at their convenience, and I can read what they have to say at my convenience.E-mail is also an expensive way to stay I close touch with people who live far away. More than a few parents use e-mail to keep in touch, even daily touch, with their children off at college. We just have to keep it in mind that computers and the Internet offer another way of staying in touch. They don’t eliminate any of the old ways.66. The purpose of this passage is to ____.A)explain how to use the InternetB)tell the advantages and usefulness of the InternetC)describe the writer’s joy of keeping up with new technologyD)introduce the reader to basic knowledge about PC and the Internet67. The use of e-mail has made it possible for the writer to ____.A)have more free time with his childB)work at a speed comfortable to himC)work at home on weekendsD)spend less time working68. According to the writer, e-mail has a clear advantage over the telephone because e-mail helpsone ____.A)get in touch with one’s friends faster than the telephoneB)keep one’s communication as personal as possibleC)pass on much more information than the telephoneD)reach a group of people at one time conveniently69. The passage discuss all the following elements of e-mail ECEPT ____.A) the saving of time C) the way of writingB) its cost D) its easy and convenient use70. The best subject for this passage is ____.A)Computes Have Made Life EasierB)Internet: A New Tool to Make FriendsC)Computers: New Technology AdvancesD)Internet: A Convenient Tool for CommunicationPart IV Translation from English into Chinese (10%) (15 minutes)Directions: In this part, there are five sentences which you should translate into Chinese. 2019年翻译资格考试catti二级笔译试题及答案

2019年翻译资格考试catti二级笔译试题及答案Translate the following passage into Chinese随着社会主义市场经济的逐步完善,中国大多数企业的社会责任意识也在不断增强。

As the socialist market economy gradually improves, there is also a growing sense of social responsibility among the vast majority of Chinese companies. They abide by the code of ethics and lawful operation andare committed to providing high-quality products for domestic and foreign consumers. They pay attention to conservation, environmental protection and CSR fulfillment. Some companies go even further by publishing their CSR reports to disclose their CSR performance and to voluntarily subject themselves to public scrutiny. Of course, constrained by the level and stage of its economic development, China still practices a rough-edged economic growth model, featuring high energy and resources consumption and high environmental costs. A handful of companies are still single-mindedly seeking profits and turning a blind eye to their social responsibilities.Since the 1980s, CSR has become to a global trend. Putting emphasis on CSR means companies not only have to be responsible to their investors, but also to their employees, customers, business partners, and to the environment and society. International success stories also show that CSR is part of a company's brand image and its core competitiveness. It is a vital source of sustained prosperity for business. So in order to survive and grow, it is imperative that companies should raise their CSR awareness and actively fulfill their social responsibilities. We have every reason to believe that future business competition will diversify from specific products, technology and talents toward CSR performance. As the proverb goes, "The rose is in her hand and thefragrance in mine". Companies benefit from their efforts to honor CSR and promote social harmony.Translate the following passage into Chinese.Born in 1451, the son of an Italian weaver, Christopher Columbus took to the sea at an early age, making up for his lack of formal education by teaching himself geography, navigation, and Latin. By the 1480s Columbus - a tall, red-haired, long-faced man with a ruddy complexion, oval eyes, and a prominent nose - was an experienced seaman. Dazzled by the prospect of Asian riches, he hatched a scheme to reach the Indies (India, China, the East Indies, or Japan) by sailing west. After the courts of Portugal, England, and France showed little interest in his plan, Columbus turned to Spain for backing. He won the support of Ferdinand and Isabella, the Spanish monarchs, and himself raised much of the money needed to finance the voyage. The legend that the queen had to hock the crown jewels is as spurious as the fable that Columbus set out to prove the earth was round.Columbus chartered one seventy-five-foot ship, the Santa Maria, and the Spanish city of Palos supplied two smaller caravels, the Pinta and Nina. From Palos this little squadron, with eighty-seven officers and men, set sail westward for what Columbus thought was Asia. The first leg of the journey went well, thanks to a strong trade wind. But then the breeze lagged, the days passed, and the crew began to grumble about。

英语翻译二级口译实务模拟试题及答案解析(3)(1/2)Part ⅠInterpret the following passages from English into Chinese. You will hear this signal to tell you when you start interpreting. Now let's begin.第1题Steven Spielberg´s first films were made at a time when directors were the most important people in Hollywood, and his more recent ones at a time when marketing controls the industry. He has remained the most powerful filmmaker in the world during both periods, which says something for his talent and his flexibility.Spielberg´s most important contribution to modem movies is his acute insight to find and attract a large audience. He ingeniously revised old-style B-movie stories with A-level craftsmanship and enhanced them with the latest developments in special effects.Considering such movies as the "Indiana Jones" series and "Jurassic Park". The story lines were the mediocre stuff, but the filmmaking was cutting edge and delivered what films have always desired: they showed us something amazing that we hadn´t seen before. The master image created in movies expresses something fundamental about the way the filmmakers see things. Spielberg once said that his master image was a simultaneous combination of brightness and mystery. This appears in many of his films. In Spielberg, the light source conceals mystery, whereas for many other directors it is darkness that conceals mystery. The difference is that for Spielberg, mystery offers promise instead of threat. One day he talked about a previous experience."My dad took me out to see a meteor shower when I was a little kid," he said, "and it was scary for me because he woke me up in the middle of the night. My heart was beating; I didn´t know what he wanted to do. He wouldn´t tell me, and he put me in the car and we went off, and I saw ail these people lying on blankets, looking up at the sky. And my dad spread out a blanket. We lay down and looked at the sky, and I saw for the first time all these meteors.""What scared me was being awakened in the middle of the night and taken somewhere without being told where. But what didn´t scare me, but was very soothing, was watching this meteor shower. And I think from that moment on, I never looked at the sky and thought it was a bad place."Spielberg has always maintained superb quality control and when his films work, they work on every level that a film can roach. When his films are shown, they will conquer the most sophisticated filmgoers in the world and invite them to tears and cheers.下一题(2/2)Part ⅠInterpret the following passages from English into Chinese. 2019年英语翻译资格考试二级笔译模拟试题及答案(3)
Now which are the animals really to be pitied in
captivity? First, those clever beings whose lively urge for activity can find no outlet behind the bars of the cage. This is most conspicuous, even for the uninitiated, in the case of animals which, when living in a free state, are accustomed to roaming about widely. Owing to this frustrated desire, foxes and wolves housed, in many old-fashioned zoos, in cages which are far too small, are among the most pitiable of all caged animals.
Though pinioned swans generally seem happy, under proper care, by hatching and tearing their young without any trouble, at migration time things become different: they repeatedly swim to the lee side of the pond, in order to have the whole extent of its surface at their disposal, trying to take off. Again and again the grand preparations end in a pathetic
flutter of their half wings; a truly sorry picture!
This, however, rarely awakens the pity of the zoo
visitor, least of all when such an originally highly
intelligent and mentally alert animal has deteriorated, in confinement, into a crazy idiot, a very caricature of its former self. Sentimental old ladies, the fanatical sponsors
of the societies for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, have
no compunction in keeping a grey parrot in a relatively small cage or even chained to a perch. Together with the large corvines, the parrots are probably the only birds which
suffer from that state of mind, common to prisoners, namely, boredom.
