the Review of the English Patient-英国病人

The film comes to a halt many times as numerous flashbacks inform the viewer of relevant information. The story is unfolded by interweaving space-time. The past and the present, love and war, memory and reality, all these are well-organized. The scene shuttles between the past and the present naturally. Reality and memory fuse into a gorgeous historical picture, magnificent, delicate and touching. The film was shot on location in Tunisia and Italy. The waved and immense desert impresses me deeply. In addition to the visual spectacles, desert is also rich in symbolism. Desert is a great destroyer which can bury all trace left by humans. There is nothing eternal but sand in the desert. On one hand, desert represents the destruction in the aspect of time. On the other hand, desert itself signifies eternity for its vastness. In the movie, desert presents Almasy and Katharine’s love. T heir love doesn’t last long and they are different in nationality, marital status, personality, and aspiration, but their love is eternal and indestructible in their hearts. Just as Katharine’s last words say, “we die, we die rich with lovers and tribes, tastes we have swallowed, bodies we have entered and swum up like rivers.”Moreover, desert cannot be conquered and possessed. It is a free world which has no trammel and is bare. Katharine gets the enlightenment from desert and writes in thecave, “We are the real countries, not the boundaries drawn on maps with the names of powerful men. I know you will come and carry me out into the palace of winds. That’s all I’ve wanted –to walk in such a place with you, with friends, on earth without maps. The film garnered widespread critical acclaim and was a major award winner as well as a box office success; its awards included the Academy Award for Best Picture, the Golden Globe Award and the BAFTA Award for Best Film. Anthony Minghella took home the Oscar for Best Director. Overall, The English Patient was nominated for 12 awards and ultimately walked away with 9.And then I’d like to intro duce the main actors to you. The first is Ralph Fiennes. He gives us an Almasy who seems strong and silent until the right woman releases all of his pent-up passion. Fiennes won a Tony Award and has been nominated twice for Academy Awards. He is the kind of actor who likes challenging himself with each new role. He also has appeared in other movies as In Bruges, Strange Days, Schindler's List, and The Reader. He is also well known for his portrayals of infamous villains. For example, he played Lord Voldemort in the Harry Potter film series. The second is Kristen Scott Thomas. She effortlessly conveys to the audience the energy and zest for life that Almasy finds irresistible. Together, these two are hotter than the desert heat thatsimmers around them. Owning to this movie, she has been nominated for Academy Awards. She gained international recognition in the 1990s for her roles in Bitter Moon, Four Weddings and a Funeral and The English Patient. The last is Juliette Binoche. She is a French film actress, who has appeared in more than 40 films since 1983. She received the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in this movie. Before that, she gained international acclaim for her portrayal in The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1988) and won the César Award for Best Actress in Three Colors: Blue (1993).。

When Almasy managed to return to the “ Cave of Swimmers” and carry Katherine out into the place of winds, everyone was moved deeply. Maybe we think the reason why Almasy break his back to return to this cave is love, and actually it is. But through the story happened to them, how can we appraise the love between them?

First of all, I think they are really in love.

Either you must submit to death, for gazing on that which you should not, or else kill my husband who has shamed me. Geoffrey:let that be a lesson to you.

the review of “the English patient”英国病人 影评

The review of “The English Patient”After appreciating this long film”The English Patient”, i am wondering whether i have truly understood the real connotation of this film and those people in this film or not. Regardless of all the plots ,persons and emotions, what i have learnt is the true love and humanity in time of war. The background of the film was based on the war between Britain and Germany for a piece of land___the desert. The main character Almasy at first was shot and nearly burnt to death when he was operating the plane across the vast desert. Luckily he was received by Arabs and was treated as English patient. Then the story was slowly unfolded by intertwined the past and the present, love and war, memory and reality. From my eyes, what impressed me most was the love between Almasy and Katharine, who had been already married. I could assume that Almasy fell in love with her at the first sight in the desert because Katharine was a pure English woman full of charm, elegance and wisdom. Alyhought she had married,Almasy was still obessed with her. After going through a big disaster in the desert,Katharine fell in love with him and even betrayed her huaband----Geoffery. Maybe some people would hate K because of her betrayal to her Geoffery, who loved her deeply. But i didn’t have that kind of feeling. What i had was the sympathy for all involved in this matter. No one was wrong to do that because love wasinnocent,so far as i thought. It was not difficult to see that K herself suffered from a lot, both mentally and physically. On the one hand, she was guilty for her betrayal to Geoffery . She knew she shouldn’t do that because her husband loved her. So she finally chose to leave Almasy because of her ethics. On the other hand, she couldn’t help loving Almasy. From Almasy,K felt the true love and freedom which she could never get from her husband. Althought they were different in nationality and marital status, even their personality, their love was eternal and precious in their hearts. But people all need to pay for what they had done to others. In the movie,i was sad to see that Geoffery knew the betrayal and chose to perish together with K and Almasy. Almasy was too quick to be knocked down by the small plane operated by G.However, G died and K was injured. In order to save his beloved, A came to English soliders for help but they arrested him because of his family name. They mistook him for a spy of Germany and took him on the train. He had to get back to the desert because she made promise and he spared no efforts to escape from the train. In order to rescue K,he sold the map of the desert which was drawn with his companies to the Germans for the plane oil. Thus he betrayed the country and his companies to save his beloved. However ,K died and wrote her last words in the cave. Every sentences she wrote made me touched, especially “we are the really countries, not the boundry drawn on maps”. It gave me sense of feeling that the war wasmeaningless and was all defeated by the love. From the movie,i loved Hana most. She was a nurse of the army and was responsible for taking care of patients. I thought what she did was already beyond what she ought to do. She not only tried her best to take care injured soilders, but also gave them concerns mentally. She even kissed a soilder whom she didn’t know but needed her supports. What she conveyed to me was a outgoing, cheerful and kindness girl. She even ascribrd the death of her boyfriend and the death of her friend Jane to her fault. She thought she must be cursed. Until she met Kip, who carried out testing bombs left by Germans and saved H for twice. They fell in love but H was still worried K would got hurt if staying with her. Althought the war was fierce, H still insist on staying to take care of burnt man, that was Almasy, who was at his last gasp.At the end of the film,Almasy seemed to remember all the things and he asked H to inject all the morphine to let him die calmly and let H to read the last words that K had written.。

英国病人的英文影评 the review on English Patient

2008300340004Vast expanses of the desert sneeringly got the dying Katharine bogged down, brimless dust in complicity with the piercing gust snapping the wings of her anxious but trepidant hope. Pervasive darkness blinded her eyes and mind alike as though the last ray of the world had abandoned her unrelentingly. Her groaning was drowned, prayers blown to ashes, and even her despair culminated in futility. Ubiquitous chill eroded every part of Katharine, whose breath of life was fading away, next to impossible to trace, bearing lamentable resemblances to the powered-off torch. She was awaiting Almasy who eventually lived up to his promise. Their hard-earned love was severed by the unbridgeable gap of death. On the screen, Almasy carried Katharine out in the palace of winds with eyes misted by tears and heart overwhelmed by woes. The movie scenes portrayed above have earned incalculable tears of sentimental and sensitive audiences without excluding me. However, as far as I’m concerned, the weepy movie clips are impotent to coat the film with preservative which enables it to become impervious to some harsh criticism and stand the corrosion of time. Touching plot alone cannot also gain favors from Oscar panel. What entitles the film to remarkable reputation is its subtle magic which provokes us into commencing penetrating reflections on the war, the love bred amid the war and intricate labels attached to everyone.I suppose still fresh is your memory of Hana’s resentment that she must have been cursed, for a couple of people who had intimate relationships with her died off.Indeed, no one involved in wars can evade being cursed and the ferocity and hazard of wars may reduce human beings to feeble patients who are able to scour for any prescription nowhere. It even seems that some losses as well as agonies are preordained once people are enmeshed in wars. Invisible landmines coveting you, unexpected rifles covering you and roaring fighters hovering over you, any step you take may mark the termination of life and any parting with the beloved may become a forever farewell.Hana was a hapless victim of the Second World War which took a wrenching toll on her. While she was besieged by the torment spawned by her boyfriend’s death and strived to have hope triumph over it, her best friend’s ensuing death as good as added the last straw on her. At one moment, she put aside her sanity and recklessly charged to the explosion spot, taking no heed of the potential menaces around her at all. Stopped in time, she landed her empty eyes on the solitary jewel Jane left. No wailing. No crying. No talking. The whole world appeared to lapse into tearful tranquility which none could venture to break. From my perspective, this movie scene can be deemed as an epitome of the wounds caused by the war and is a great success. Instead of shrill cry and desperate scream which may even disturb and bore our ears, the wordless and quiet grief adds more fuel to resonating with the audience and gets engraved on our mind and memory. Hana worked as a nurse during the war and she fulfilled her obligations heart and soul. In the wake of her bereavement, she totally absorbed herself in tending the “English patient”, Almasy. What strike me most are that she would patiently read to him, understandingly listen to him and tenderly kisshim goodnight. She extended her kindness and generosity to mitigate his pain and nourish his barren heart. As she took care of Almasy, she also gradually retrieved the serenity of mind and her shattered heart was immensely consoled by an Indian who was also dutiful to remove landmines. Basically, the movie is haunted by smoldering sadness. However, at the end of the movie, Hana sat at the back of a truck, enjoying the fleeting scenery flowing by her eyes peacefully and smilingly. This may usher in a brand-new chapter of her life and mark the dawn long hankered after by unnumbered people tortured by the war.Almasy suffered the curse of the war and nationality while Katharine was cursed by her loveless marriage where she was taken captive and moaned under the ordeal of emotional suppression. They clicked with each other soon but hesitation, uncertainty and most important of all, the barrier erected by the conventions froze their immediate action to lay bare their burning love for one another. On the one hand, Katharine was labeled as a married lady but she felt reluctant to response to her husband’s intense affection. She compelled herself to simulate bliss to sustain the delicate marriage, but her soul drifted about in a wilderness exempt from any marital restrictions, unsettled and untouched until the advent of Almasy. On the other hand, at that chilly night, everyone was engrossed in Katharine’s story except Almasy whose inner heart trembled with surging love just like the flaring fire in front of him. He couldn’t help gravitating towards her matchless charm and extraordinary elegance. His sterile heart began to bloom and every flower was named “Katharine”. He detested ownership but he craved to monopolize Katharine. When he saw Katharinedancing with a young gentleman with conspicuous relish, he eventually surrendered to jealousy and failed to suppress his exasperation. Almasy hated being owned but his heart was indeed owned by Katharine no matter whether he confessed to it. Reeling with reluctance when Katharine couldn’t endure the anxiety over the timed bomb and intended to leave him, Almasy still endeavored to retain his last respect by deliberately remarking that he wasn’t missing her yet. However, every sensible viewer clearly knew that he had been diagnosed with love intoxication. Stuck in the sticky mud of love, more struggles to ascend would only amount to more depth to descend. Without a solid foundation constructed by true love, marriage would be deprived of sacredness, reduced to an ineffective license. Even though imprisoned by marriage, a wild while dissatisfied heart would never be tamed. Katharine was a patient sweetly poisoned by her marriage before encountering Almasy but beset by the haunting guilt of infidelity thereafter. Likewise, Almasy was also a patient plagued by unobtainable love, for which he swapped the strategically significant map of North Africa that ignited a sequence of tragedies. After interaction with some of my classmates, I discover that a vast majority of them cast a sympathetic eye on Geoffrey who seems to be unanimously regarded as a victim and who chafed under so many seemingly underserved sufferings. Admittedly, Geoffrey was a victim, but he was a patient as well, for he mistakenly supposed that a marriage composed of only one’s love could also enjoy a chance of maintenance and even prosperity. Thereby, from my point of view, he couldn’t excuse himself from accounting for his own tragedy. In fact, he created a love drama wherethe director and protagonist was him alone without Catharine’s coordination, without her applause, and without her appreciation. When all his bubbles of illusion burst, he even decided to bring this deformed marriage to an end of death. In this movie, also omnipresent are diverse labels which derive from various races, nationalities and occupations. Alamsy was labeled as a German, which gave rise to the fatal delay of rescuing his lover’s life. Then, the plane he flew was unfortunately labeled as an English plane, thus failing to escape the fate of being demolished. In Catharine’s last diary, she conveyed her seemingly extravagant wish that there would exist a world free from any boundary. To sum up, despite the absence of excessive bloody or violent scenes, the movie grips our mind throughout our watching. The external conflicts in the war and the underlying ones in the marriage intertwine with each other, both propelling the plot to advance towards its climax and culmination. It is reputed as quite a thought-provoking movie which sparks different wisdom within different people’s minds.。

The View of a British Patient" - Reflections on Healthcare Services in the UKIntroduction:As a patient in the United Kingdom, I had the opportunity to experience and observe the healthcare system firsthand. This article aims to provide an objective view of my observations, highlighting both positive and negative aspects of the British healthcare system based on my personal experiences. It is essential to note that these views are subjective and may not reflect the experiences of every individual.Accessibility and Universal Coverage:One of the commendable aspects of the UK healthcare system is the accessibility and universal coverage it provides. The National Health Service (NHS) ensures that healthcare services are available to all residents, regardless of their socioeconomic status. This inclusivity removes the financial burden on patients, and everyone receives the required medical attention regardless of their ability to pay.Timeliness and Wait Times:While the NHS offers free healthcare, one significant issue that is often mentioned is the long waiting times for appointments and treatments. For non-emergency consultations or treatments, the wait can sometimes be extensive, potentially impacting patients' well-being. However, it is worth noting that the waiting times may vary across different regions andhealthcare facilities, with urban areas often experiencing longer delays compared to more rural areas.Quality of Care:The quality of care in the UK healthcare system is generally high. Medical practitioners are well-trained professionals who provide thorough examinations and detailed explanations during consultations. Nurses and other healthcare professionals also play a crucial role in delivering compassionate care to patients, ensuring the overall well-being of individuals during their healthcare journey.Access to Medications and Treatments:Access to necessary medications and treatments is another positive aspect of the UK healthcare system. The NHS provides a comprehensive list of medications that are readily available to patients, often at minimal or no cost. This accessibility ensures that individuals can manage their conditions effectively, promoting better health outcomes for the population as a whole.Patient-Doctor Relationship:The patient-doctor relationship in the UK is characterized by shared decision-making and patient-centered care. Doctors take the time to listen to patients' concerns, discuss treatment options, and involve them in the decision-making process. This open communication fosters trust and empowers patients to actively participate in their own healthcare decisions.Technological Advancements:The UK healthcare system has also embraced technological advancements, which have improved the efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare delivery. Electronic medical records enable seamless transfer of patient information between healthcare providers, reducing the chances of errors and improving coordination of care. Furthermore, telemedicine and digital health solutions have become increasingly common, providing patients with convenient access to healthcare services, especially in remote areas.Challenges and Areas for Improvement:Despite the many positive aspects of the UK healthcare system, there are also several challenges and areas for improvement. One of the key issues is underfunding, which can lead to limited resources and stretched healthcare facilities. This can contribute to longer waiting times and potential strain on healthcare professionals.Another challenge is the increasing demand for healthcare services due to an aging population, chronic disease prevalence, and changing healthcare needs. To address this, a stronger focus on preventive care and public health initiatives could help reduce the burden on acute care services and promote better overall population health. Conclusion:In conclusion, my experience as a British patient has allowed me to appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of the UK healthcare system. The accessibility, universal coverage, and quality of care provided by the NHS are commendable. However, long wait times and underfunding are areas that need attention and improvement. By addressing these challenges andleveraging technological advancements, the UK healthcare system can evolve to better meet the needs of its population and continue to provide high-quality care in the future.。

A Patient's Reflection: A British ExperienceIn a small village tucked away in the picturesque countryside of England, I found myself in a hospital room, surrounded by a team of dedicated medical professionals. As a patient grappling with health issues, I had the opportunity to witness and experience the healthcare system in the United Kingdom firsthand. In this reflection, I would like to share my thoughts and impressions, offering an English version of my observations for all to appreciate.1. The Warmth of the British Healthcare SystemFrom the moment I entered the hospital, I was struck by the incredible warmth and compassion of the staff. Every nurse, doctor, and supporting staff member exuded a genuine sense of care and concern for the patients. They not only displayed professionalism in their medical duties but also took the time to provide emotional support, easing the anxieties that often accompany health-related challenges.2. A Testament to EfficiencyEfficiency is an essential aspect of any healthcare system. In the UK, I witnessed a commendable level of organization and effectiveness. The hospital staff worked seamlessly together, ensuring that everything from medical tests to consultations and treatments was carried out promptly. This allowed patients to receive the care they needed in a timely manner, greatly reducing unnecessary delays.3. An Emphasis on Patient-Centered CareOne of the most notable aspects of the British healthcare system is its commitment to patient-centered care. Throughout my stay, I felt like an active participant in the decision-making process regarding my treatment. The doctors took the time to explain the various options available, highlighting the potential risks and benefits of each approach. This open communication fostered a sense of trust and allowed me to make informed decisions about my health.4. Accessibility for AllThe principle of healthcare accessibility was evident in every aspect of my experience. The National Health Service (NHS) in the UK allows individuals to access healthcare services regardless of their socioeconomic status. As a patient, I did not have to worry about the financial burden of medical expenses, allowing me to solely focus on my recovery. This commitment to universal healthcare ensures that every citizen has equal access to quality care.5. Holistic Approach to HealthcareThe British healthcare system adopts a holistic approach to patient care, recognizing the importance of addressing physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Alongside medical treatments, I was offered access to various support services, including counseling and therapy sessions. These services played a vital role in my recovery, promoting a comprehensive healing process that addressed both the physical and emotional aspects of my condition.6. A Supportive CommunityBeyond the hospital walls, I was touched by the support and sense of community that permeated British society. From the locals who volunteered their time at the hospital to the inspiring stories of patients who had overcome similar health challenges, I experienced firsthand the power of solidarity in the face of adversity. The sense of belonging and camaraderie provided an immense source of strength and optimism throughout my journey.7. Continuous Learning and InnovationThe British healthcare system places great emphasis on continuous learning and innovation. The medical professionals I encountered demonstrated a commitment to staying up-to-date with the latest advancements in the field. This dedication to research and development ensures that patients receive the best possible care, as medical practices continue to evolve and improve.ConclusionMy encounter with the British healthcare system left an indelible impression on me.

The lush cinematography in this film is so good. The trade-off shot types, such as extreme long shot, fullshot,close-upetc drawin the viewer in its contrast between sensual images of an adulterous affair and jarring images of wartime brutality. When the plane was flying in the sky of desrt, it uses extreme long shot, and then zooms in for a close-up to show the damage of the plane, then, extreme long shot, again. The plane struggled desperately like a weak and tiny insectin the hail of bullets. the whole shotsareSmooth and fluent, and the changesof shotsmake the plot clear, also let the audience feel that the what they see is true to nature. When it shows the critical condition of the patient, it uses close-up, successfully shows the terrible, horrific and bloody burns. In fact, it uses many full shots and medium shots to show the ralationships between the characters.

When Almasy managed to return t o the “ Cave of Swimmers ” and carry Katherine out into the place of winds, everyone was moved deeply. Maybe we think the reason why Almasy break his back to return to this cave is love, and actually it is. But through t he story happe n e d to t h e m, how can we appraise thelove between them?

First of all, I think they are really in love.

Either you must submit to death, for gazing on that which you shouldnot, or else kill my h usband who has shamed me. Geoffrey :let that be a lesson to you.

The Beauty of Humanity
20100301298 The English patient, adapted from one book which is entitled with the same name of a Canadian writer, Michael Ondaatje, is a love tragedy with the background of war and desert. It cost 27millinon dollars and over 200 people from eight countries took part in making this film. In 1997, The English patient received 9 awards in 69th Oscar, for instance, best motion picture, best director, and best film editing. Once you have seen this film, you will find it live up with its fame.
The story is told in flashbacks by Count Laszlo de Almásy who has been badly burned in plane crash, occurring just as the film opens. Almásy is taken care of by Hana, an unlucky but warm-hearted girl who lost her boyfriend and best friend in the war. With the help of Hana, Count Laszlo de Almásy gradually regains his memory. He used to be a Hungarian historian who investigated with the explorer Madox in the Sahara, where he made acquaintance with a pilot, Geoffrey and his wife, Katharine. He found that Katharine was so enthusiastic and smart that he couldn’t help falling in love with her. In the mean while, Katharine took to him because of his intelligence, alert and humorous. Since Katharine was a married woman, their love was bound to be a tragedy. At the last, though Almásy risks his life to save his lover, he could not change the ending: Katharine was dead. Ralph Fiennes, who is known for his warm smile and charming eyes, plays the Almásy role very well, especially in the scene which he walks in the desert for 3 days to find a doctor to save Katharine, his face is full of anxiety and desperation, which exactly expresses the feeling of the poor Almásy.
Kristin Scott Thomas was nearly 40 years old when she played the Katharine role in The English patient. We have to admit that though Kristin Scott Thomas is not young but she is a beautiful and elegant woman. In this movie, Kristin’s role is very paradox: Katharine loves Almásy but she can’t stand the blame from her ethics, so she makes a tough decision to break up with Almásy. She doesn’t expect her having an affair with Almásy will drive her husband Geoffrey crazy. Geoffrey wants to kill
Almásy but he kills himself and makes Katharine badly hurt. Eventually, Katharine died in a cold cave, waiting for Almásy to save her. Someone says that if he were Almásy, he would rather stay in the caves and spent the last days with Katharine. However, Almásy loves Katharine so much, and how can he bear the pain that she dies in front of him? Nevertheless, the misfortune can not be avoided in the war.
While Almásy gradually remembers what happen before his accident, his nurse, Hana falls in love with an Indian lieutenant, Kip. Since Kip’s duty is to remove bombs, Hana worries a lot when Kip goes out for work. Times go by; Hana can no longer stand these awful days, so she separates with Kip. After she helps Almásy to leave the world to chaise his lover, Hana leaves the cloister alone. It was another unfortunate love happen in the war. But nobody can change the end because the war is heartless.
This movie interweaves past and present, love and war, and memory and reality, but it is not messy at all. Every part connects with each other naturally. Betrayer Almásy, brokenhearted Hana, paradox Kip and rancorous Moose, they are all victims of the war. The most impressive advantage of this movie is the description of human soul and their subtle feeling: Katharine loves Almásy but she chooses to leave him because of her ethics; Hana escapes from Kip because she doesn’t want to get hurt. The most important thought of this movie is the idea about humanity and ethics. In front of humanity and love, frontiers drawn in the maps seem insignificant. Just as the saying that Katharine writes to Almásy in her letter: “We are the real countries. Not the boundaries drawn on maps, the names of powerful men.”And Katharine also writes that we die rich with lovers and tribes. The director Anthony Minghella shows us the beauty of humanity in a special way.
In brief, The English patient is worthy for us to watch and think.。
