ReadingADVICE FROM GRANDADDear James,It is a beautiful day here and I am sitting under the big tree at the end of the garden. I have just returned from a long bike ride to an old castle. It seems amazing that at my age I am still fit enough to cycle 20 kilometres in an afternoon. It's my birthday in two weeks time and I'll be 82 years old! I think my long and active life must be due to the healthy life I live. This brings me to the real reason for my letter, my dear grandson. Your mother tells me that you started smoking some time ago and now you are finding it difficult to give it up. Believe me, I know how easy it is to begin smoking and how tough it is to stop. You see, during adolescence I also smoked and became addicted to cigarettes.By the way, did you know that this is because you become addicted in three different ways? First, you can become physically addicted to nicotine, which is one of the hundreds of chemicals in cigarettes. This means that after a while your body becomes accustomed to having nicotine in it. So when the drug leaves your body, you get withdrawal symptoms. I remember feeling bad-tempered and sometimes even in pain. Secondly, you become addicted through habit. As you know, if you do the same thing over and over again, you begin to do it automatically. Lastly, you can become mentally addicted. I believed I was happier and more relaxed after having a cigarette, so I began to think that I could only feel good when I smoked. I was addicted in all three ways, so it was very difficult to quit. But I did finally manage. When I was young, I didn't know much about the harmful effects of smoking. I didn't know, for example, that it could do terrible damage to your heart and lungs or that it was more difficult for smoking couples to become pregnant. I certainly didn't know their babies may have a smaller birth weight or even be abnormal in some way. Neither did I know that my cigarette smoke could affect the health of non-smokers. However, what I did know was that my girlfriend thought I smelt terrible. She said my breath and clothes smelt, and that the ends of my fingers were turning yellow. She told me that she wouldn't go out with me again unless I stopped! I also noticed that I became breathless quickly, and that I wasn't enjoying sport as much. When I was taken off the school football team because I was unfit, I knew it was time to quit smoking.I am sending you some advice I found on the Internet. It might help you to stop and strengthen your resolve. I do hope so because I want you to live as long and healthy a life as I have.Love fromGrandadHow can you stop smoking? It is not easy to stop smoking, but millions have managed to quit and so can you. Here are a few suggestions.Prapare youself. Decide on a day to quit. Don’t choose a day that you know is going to be stressful, such as the day of an exam. Make a list of all the benefits you will get from stopping smoking. Then throw away your last packet of cigarettes.Be determined. Every time you fell like smoking a cigarette, remind yourself that you are a non-smoker. Reread the list of benefits you wrote earlier.Break the habit. Instead of smoking a cigarette, do something else. Go for a walk, clean your teeth, frink some water, clean the house; in fact, do anything to keep ypur mind and especially your hands busy.Relax. If you start to feel nervous or stressed, do not raech for a cigarette. Try some deep breathing instead. Do some relaxationg exercises every time you feel stressed.Get help if you need it. Arrange to stop smoking with a friend so you can talk about your problems,or join a stop-smoking group. If you feel desperate , you might like to talk to a doctor or chemist about something to help you, like nicotine chewing gum.Keep trying. Don’t be disappointed if you have to try several times before you finally stop smoking. If you weaken and have a cigarette,do not feel ashamed. Just try again. You will succeed finally.

What can be inferred from the passage?A. Stressors will influence your mental and physical health.B. Anxiety prevents you from dealing with tense situations.C. There’re 15 million Americans that experience depression.D. Different kinds of depressive disorders have different symptoms.CEvery day, all across the nation, as many as one in four children refuse to go to school. The reasons are various. "School Refusal", formerly known as "School Phobia", is an actual anxiety-based disorder. Many children are vague about their complaints and unable to be sure what is making them anxious, so it is sometimes regarded as typical childhood willfulness. However, the effects of constant school refusal can be far-reaching for your child’s education. So, where is the line between what’s normal and what’s not "You need to look at whether it is affecting the child or the family’s daily functioning," explains Christopher Kearney, . In other words, if a child’s grades are suffering from frequent absences o r a parent’s job is disturbed, it is time to look closely at the issue. Parents should listen carefully to children who say they can’t go to school because of "untestable things", such as stomachaches or headaches. While these complaints alone don’t necess arily indicate school refusal, there may be deeper problems if combined with general complaints about school, talks of threats at school and so on.There are different kinds of behavior in school refusal. Some children are influenced by their friends who skip school to hang out with their friends, showing a sense of rebellion (叛逆). Some children cling to their mother’s leg, screaming at the thought of having to enter the school building. However, that doesn’t mean that getting a child back into t he classroom is impossible. According to Maryann Roth, a school psychologist and guidance counselor (顾问), parents should attempt to make the child get back to school, no matter how hard it is. Working closely with school officials and possibly a specialist to create a plan is a necessary step.64. The underlined word "vague"(Paragraph 1) is close in meaning to _________.A. irregularB. unclearC. indifferentD. unusual65. According to Paragraph 2, the real reason of "School Refusal" maybe that the children ______.A. are suffering from illnessB. are afraid of endless testsC. want to stay with their parentsD. feel bored and unsafe at school66. When facing "School Refusal" of their children, parents should _______.A. take the problem seriously if their daily life is disturbedB. discuss the seriousness of the problem with their childrenC. take their children to see the doctor immediatelyD. keep their children away from their rebellious friends67. The passage intends to ___________.A. explain that "School Refusal" is a symptom of an illnessB. explain the phenomenon of "School Refusal" and how to treat itC. remind parents to take good care of their childrenD. explain that "School Refusal" is normal and not seriousDIf you love adventure and excitement, then Hunter’s best-selling Warriors series is for you. The fantasy books follow four cat clans(部落) as they try to survive in the wilderness. In the newest book, Thunder Clan warrior Ash fur has been mysteriously murdered. This sets three warrior cats named Holly leaf, Lion blaze and Jay feather on a journey to find the killer. The three friends must deal with other problems, too. Jay feather is searching for his parents, but he must struggle against many lies to find them. Holly leaf encounters her own obstacles when her clan refuses to follow the warrior rule. And Lion blaze discovers some unbelievable secrets. Besides, the cats face many dangers and the chance that another warrior will disappear forever."Hunter" is really a pen name for Victoria Holmes and two other authors, Kate Cary and Cherith Baldry. They chose Hunter to cover the three of them because of Red wall, a very successful book written by Brian Jacques. It is a similar animal fantasy about rats and mice. Because Warriors was going to fit into that bracket (级别), they wanted their books to go into the bookshelves next to his. So they needed a name alphabetically (按字母排序地) that would be close to Jacques. Hunter fits perfectly."My favorite character is Jay feather. You never know if he is on the side of the angels or not. He’s got a quite dark side about him. In terms of the cat that I would like to be my best friend, that would be Cinder pelt. She is so cool. She has a great sense of humor and she is a good medicine cat. Even if she isn’t a warrior, she tries to make the best of her destiny. I really admire that in her," said Victoria Holmes, one of the authors.68. The three warrior cats go on a journey mainly to _____.A. survive in the wildernessB. protect another warrior from disappearingC. find the killer that murdered Ash furD. look for some adventure and excitement69. From the second paragraph, we can learn that _____.A. Jay feather likes to tell lies and is unreliableB. the warrior rule of Holly leaf’s clan is terribleC. the journey is not easy for the three catsD. there are lots of unbelievable secrets among the clans70. The authors chose Hunter as the pen name because _______.A. the book is about the hunting of catsB. they all admired the fantasy author Brian JacquesC. the books should be placed into the bookshelves labeled as "H"D. they wanted their books to be best-sellers just like Jacques’Redwall71. Which of the following is NOT true about Cinder peltaccording to Victoria HolmesA. She has a sense of humor.B. She is on the side of the angels.C. She attempts to make the best of her destiny.D. She is a good medicine cat.EIf you ask Cheryl McBride about the time she stopped breathing —long enough to make her lips turn blue —she’ll tell you it was good fortune. Really! Not that she’s fond of near-death experiences. But this one turned her life around.Cheryl had been feeling anxious, exhausted and headachy. On top of everything, her memory was going. Everyone knows what it’s like when a word or a neighbor’s name won’t come when you try to think of it. What’s worse is that it may make you worry that you’ve got Alzheimer’s disease But Alzheimer’s is not the only memory robber. There are other factors —yet doctors often fail to diagnose them.Cheryl, for instance, told her doctor she was concerned about her forgetfulness. She’d just begun caring for her e lderly parents and her doctor thought the problem might be due to stress; he advised her to leave the town on a trip with an old friend. On the first night in the hotel, Cheryl’s friend, Nina Freed, learned something new about her. "Cheryl snored (打鼾),"she said. "Very loudly. She just snored and snored." But one night, the snoring stopped. "I looked over at Cheryl and she wasn’t breathing," Freed said. "She was very pale and blue around the lips. My heart just dropped, but then she let out a huge snort."Having heard Nina’s description, Cheryl told the doctor about it. The moment she did, the doctor knew what was causing Cheryl’s problems. "You’re suffocating (呼吸受阻),"said the doctor. "Even in your sleep, your brain isaware of this emergency. So it interrupts you and starts your breathing again. Those starts and stops deprive (剥夺) you of sleep, which is enough to make you forgetful." Luckily, there’s an effective treatment. "I feel so good now," Cheryl says. "I’ve almost forgotten how bad it us ed to be." 72. Why did Cheryl leave the town on a trip ? A. She wanted to see her old friend, Nina . She wanted to forget about her trouble. C. She wanted to relax to cure her forgetfulness. D. She wanted to find a good doctor. 73. What caused Cheryl’s forgetfulness ? A. She lacked sleep because of a health . She had to look after her elderly parents.C. She was always exhausted and anxious.D. She had got Alzheimer’s disease.74. From the passage we can learn that _____.A. Cheryl knew that she was suffocating when she was asleepB. Cheryl’s memory -related problem often made her lips turn blueC. Nina Freed knew that Cheryl often snored when sleepingD. forgetfulness easily makes people worry about Alzheimer’s disease75. Which is the right order of the following events ?a. Cheryl left on a trip.b. Cheryl began to care for her elderly parents.c. The doctor found the cause of Cheryl’s forgetfulness.d. Cheryl’s friend found that Cheryl snored.

AJudy Wright and her husband decided to move closer to their son, Chris, who lived in Georgia. About a month after the move, Judy fell ill, suffering from her ongoing battle against Parkinson’s disease. Her condition worsened rapidly and she required medical care at home. The family hired a nursing aid who cancelled at the last minute. Instead, a woman named TunDe Hector showed up in her place. One day, TunDe shared a story with Judy and her family. She remembered a particularly difficult day in 2014, when a stranger had helped her with a kind gesture. She had run out of gas, and with only$5 in her pocket, was walking to a gas station, gas can in hand. A man saw her walking and turned his car around. He paid for her gas and gave her all the cash left in his wallet. Upon hearing the story, Judy’s son, Chris, took off his hat and said, “That was me!” He was the stranger that had helped TunDe on that difficult day.During the care of Judy, the Wright family learned about TunDe’s family and her own dream. The nursing aid, TunDe hoped that one day she could become an OB-GYN nurse. Her tuition was past due(逾期)and she had a family to care for, but she was determined to achieve that goal for herself and her family.Judy died on July 9,2017. Instead of flowers, her family asked mourners(悼念者) to donate to TunDe’s education, to assist her in paying for her nursing school. Delighted.2.How did the Wright family help TunDe after Judy’s death?A. They paid for her education.B. They helped care for her family.C. They helped her realize her dream.D. They bought her a surprise present.3.What does the whole story mainly tell us?A. Kindness comes full circle.B. Actions speak louder than words.C. The truth never fears investigation.D. Constant dropping wears the stone.BOrganic food, grown without artificial chemicals, is increasingly popular nowadays. Consumers have been willing to pay up to twice as much for goods with organic labels (标签). However, if you think paying a little more for organic food gets you a more nutritious and safer product, then you’d better save your money. A study led by researchers at Stanford University says that organic products aren’t necessarily more nutritious, and they’re no less likely to suffer from disease-causing bacteria, either. For their new study, Smith-Spangler and her colleagues conducted a review of two categories(种类) of research, including 17 studies that compared health outcomes between consumers of organic against traditional food products, and 223 studies that analysed the nutritional content of the foods, including key vitamins, minerals and fats. While the researchers found little difference in nutritional content, they did find that organic fruit and vegetables were 20% less likely to have chemicals remaining on the surfaces. Neither organic nor traditional foods showed levels of chemicals high enough to go beyond food safety standards. And both organic and traditional meats, such as chicken and pork, were equally likely to be harmed by bacteria at very low rates. The researchers did find that organic milk and chicken contained higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, a healthy fat also found in fish that can reduce the risk of heart disease. However, these nutritional differences were too small, and the researchers were unwilling to make much of them until further studies confirm the trends.Organic food is produced with fewer chemicals and more natural-growing practices, but that doesn’t always translate into a more nutritious or healthier product. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) states that, “Whether you buy organic or not, finding the freshest foods available may have the biggest effect on taste.” Fresh food is at least as good as anything marketed as organic.4.What does the underlined sentence in the first paragraph mean?anic food helps you save money.anic food is not always nutritious.anic food contains much more nutrients.anic food is worth the high price.5.How did Smith-Spangler and her colleagues carry out the research?A.They made 223 studies about the consumers.B.They made 17 studies about the nutrients.C.They made two kinds of research.D.They compared the consumers with the nutrients.6.What might be the author’s attitude towards organic food?A.It makes little difference to have organic food.B.It costs less money if we all buy organic food.C.Only the freshest organic food is worth twice the price.D.We should not spend any money on organic food.C“One of the reasons I find this topic very interesting is that my mum was a smoker when I was younger,” says Lindson-Hawley, who studies tobacco and health at the University of Oxford.By studying about 700 adult smokers, she found out that her mum quit the right way—by stopping abruptly and completely. In her study, participants were randomly(随机地) assigned to two groups. One had to quit abruptly on a given day, going from about a pack a day to zero. The other cut down gradually over the course of two weeks. People in both groups used the nicotine replacement, like gum or spray. They also had the talk therapy(疗法) with a nurse before and after the quit day.Six months later, more people who had quit abruptly had stuck with it—more than one-fifth of them, compared to about one-seventh in the other group. Although these numbers appear low, it is much higher than if people try without support. And the quit rates were particularly convincing given that before the study started, most of the people had said they’d rather cut down gradually before quitting. “If you’re training for a marathon, you wouldn’t expect to turn up and just be able to run it. And I think people see that for smoking as well. Th ey think, ‘Well, if I gradually reduce, it’s like practice,’” says Lindson-Hawley. But that wasn’t the case. Instead of giving people practice, the gradual reduction likely gave them addiction and withdrawal symptoms(脱瘾症状) before they even reached the day, which could be why fewer people in that group actually made it to that point. “Regardless of your stated preference, if you’re ready to quit, quitting abruptly is more effective,” says Dr Gabriela Ferreira. “When you can quote a specific number like a fifth of the patients were able to quit, that’s acceptable. It gives them the encouragement, I think, to really go for it,” Ferreira says.People rarely manage to quit the first time they try. But at least, she says, they can maximize the odds of success.7.What does Lindson-Hawley say about her mother?A. She quit smoking with her daughter’s help.B. She was also a researcher of tobacco and health.C. She studied the smoking patterns of adult smokers.D. She succeeded in quitting smoking abruptly.8.What kind of support did smokers receive to quit smoking in Lindson-Hawley’s study?A. They were given physical training.B. They were offered the nicotine replacement.C. They were encouraged by psychologists.D. They were looked after by physicians.9.How does Dr Gabriela Ferreira view the result of Lindson-Hawley’s experiment?A. It is encouraging.B. It is unexpected.C. It is impractical.D. It is misleading.10.Take the idea of “a marathon” (Para.5) as an example to show that quitting smoking .A. is something few can accomplishB. requires a lot of patienceC. needs some practice firstD. is a challenge at the beginning第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
