My Reflection on Oliver Twist

My Reflection on Oliver Twist学号:081040713姓名:张婷Abstract: Oliver Twist is one of Dickens’masterpieces, which has reflected the real and terrible life of London underworld. It has given expression to the evil that lies in the novel, and exposes the darkest, filthiest phenomenon. This paper will mainly analyze the protagonist’s characteristics and hope to have a better understanding of the critical realist skills in Dickens’ novels.Oliver Twist is written by British writer Charles John Huffman Dickens, who was the greatest critical realism novelist in the 19th century of the Great Britain. Oliver Twist is one of his masterpieces, which has reflected the real and terrible life of London underworld. It has exposed the darkest social phenomenon. Using an orphan’s personal experience this novel well condemned and criticized the hypocrisy and darkness of the capitalist law. And it has exposed the crimes of the society. As a whole, Oliver Twist is a story telling how Oliver Twist survivedthe terrible and dark society and leads a happy and decent life in the end. Oliver was the real representative of people who lived the bottom of the society. Oliver was an abandoned baby struggling in the orphanage for 9 years. At first he followed a parish clerk. Then he was sent to a coffin shop owner as an apprentice. Because he was unbearable hunger, poverty and humiliation, he fled to London, but fell into a gang of thieves. There he was forced to be a pickpocket. Someday, he was mistaken as a thief and was put into the police. he was taken in by a not poor man named Mr. Brownlow. Unfortunately, he was imposed to the den of thieves again. A kind female thief Nancy sympathized with Oliver, despite of the head of the thief's surveillance and threats, and informed Mr. Brownlow that Oliver was his grandson whom had found for a long time. Nancy was killed by the thief leader, and then police rounded up the den of thieves. Oliver was finally able to reunite with their family and led a happy and successful life. Though during his growth, he suffered a lot, he always kept a heart of kindness and thanksgiving. After reading this novel, I was deeply impressed by the little boy. Oliver is a boy of kinds of virtues. Just as Dickens insisted when he created the work, that life is a combat between vice and virtue, and vice is bound to be defeated by virtue. Virtue is one of the most important aspect in the novel. The writer mainly expresses virtue in the innocent and poor persons such as the protagonist Oliver, and, Nancy. Oliver and, Nancy arethe two typical heroes. Here I mainly talk about the virtue in Oliver. Oliver is a kind-hearted, innocent, brave, honest and strong-willed boy. I think these are just what virtue is in this little boy. My analyses of Oliver’s characteristics are as follows. He is kind. His kindness can be showed in many aspects. He seemingly treated everybody kindly. First, although in face of the thieves, he also showed kindness to them. The most obvious one is to Fagin. Fagi n was deceitful, he didn’t believe in anybody. He treated the other thieves fiercely. He was also a money-mad. “He looked at the jewelry with pleasure, then replaced them what a good thing hanging is he murmured.” This is the scene. He not only felt sad for his companions, but also afraid that the other thieves might betray to him. How a bad man he was. If other little thieves did not steal good and precious things, he would treat them coldly and even cruelly. As another scene shows, Fagin got very angry to Dodger and charley Bates, and even knocked them down the stairs and sent them to bed with no dinner. He abused them just because they had returned with nothing stolen. He also treated Oliver badly. When he was counting and enjoying his hidden treasures, he caught that Oliver waked up and carelessly saw this thing. He madly and beastly picked up a long piece of wood and hit Oliver hard on the shoulders with stick. Even though he was so bad, Oliver also keep a kind attitude to him. After Fagin was sent into the prison, Oliver even paid avisit to him and told him that he would prey for him. How kind Oliver was. Secondly, before monks, he also showed an attitude of kindness. Monks was Oliver half brother, but he treated Oliver bad. Monks wanted to hold all the in heritance, therefore Monks tried to kill Oliver. Monks hated his half brother very much. He instigated Fagin to kill Oliver. Even though Monks did like that, Oliver didn’t have a grudge against Monks. Monks finally got forgiveness from Oliver. After all have been proved, all the money should have gone to Oliver alone, Monks shouldn’t get the money from the inheritance by law. But as to Oliver’s kindness, Monks was given the other half of money and what’s more. How kind a boy! Was there anyone who could do like Oliver? Looking at some people in our society, they quarrel with each other and the become enemies with each other. Unluckily, we can’t meet such kind person like Oliver I think. In the dark society where Oliver lived, he also kept a heart which was kinder than ours.He is innocent. This word innocent can be understood in two sides namely “无辜的and天真的”. The two aspects can also be showed in the little boy. First, he was无辜的. His innocence can be seen obviously. From the moment that he was born, he was doomed to be innocent, because his mother was regarded to have done something shameful. When he first came to the world, his mother died. In his after life, he couldn’t get love and care. He was a pitiful boy. In the underworld society,he could not make his livings by himself. Even he done something wrong, there should be no ground for blame. Let alone he did not do hard to others. Second, he was “天真的”. When he arrived in London with no money, there was nobody who he knew. When Dodger “helped” him, and introduced Fagin to him saying “I know a very nice old gentleman there who will let you live in his place and not even ask you for money.” Oliver was deeply grateful for this offer of shelter and talked for a long time with his new “friend”. To the end, there was nobody teaching him how to escape being taken in.He is brave. When he was asked to sleep in the room with coffins after he was sent to a coffin shop, he behaved not so freighted that he could not sleep. When the little master Noah insulted his mother, he dared to hit him. Here he used all strength to beat Noah. What is the strength that he could make such a decision? Intense feeling of anger has deprived him of his reasons; he does not allow the others to his mother's slightest insult. His bravery can be proved when he asked more to eat. “Oliver went up to the master with his bowl in his hand. He felt very frightened. “Please, sir, I want some more”. The master, a fat, healthy man, turned very pale. He looked at the little boy in front of him with amazement. “What?” he asked at last, in a faint voice. “Please, sir,” replied Oliver, “I want some more.” Not like others succumbed to authority, Oliver was brave enough to challenge authority. He, who only depended on a poorhouse to survive, can have such courage, how commendable! In addition, when he could n’t bear the sufferings in the coffin shops, he decided to flee away to London, and so he did. His bravery was more than most children. Just remember he was a 10 years old boy.He is strong-willed. Though he was a little boy and suffered a lot in this vicious society, he did not give in. Faced with the coldness and cruelty of others, he starved to live on. Though he came from sufferings, he never loss themselves. It is the same with Nancy and Rose. In their heart, goodness and trueness are still alive. He is filial. Oliver was an orphan. Even though he did not see or know his mother, he loved his mother likewise. There would be no one who insults his mother. This can be reflected in the following scene. In the coffin shop, Noah asked him about his mother. Noah asked, “Workhouse, how’s your mother?” “She’s dead.” replied Oliver, his face going red; Noah hoped that Oliver was going to cry, so he continued. “What did she die of, Workhouse?” “Of a broken heart, I was told.” A tear rolled down Oliver’s cheek, “Why are you crying, Workhouse?” Oliver remained silent, and Noah continued said “You know, I feel very sorry for you, Workhouse, but the truth is your mother was a wicked woman.” Oliver seemed suddenly to wake up. “What did you say?” “She was so bad it was lucky she died, or she would have ended up in prison, or hung.” Hi s face bright red with anger, O liver jumped up, seized Noah’sthroat, and shook him so violently that his teeth nearly fell out. (This comes from the original words) From this event, we can see Ol iver’s pure love for his mother. This showed his filial obedience to his mother. These are almost Oliver’s virtues. Dickenson created such a miserable but perfect boy in his work, not only to reflect the real society at that time and criticize the darkness of the capitalist society, but also to tell the readers a common learning, that is, the triumph of good over evil and once going through the rain, you will finally see the beautiful rainbow and welcome a happy life.Bibliography:1.狄更斯.雾都孤儿.牛津大学出版社,外语教学与研究出版社,19922.英语大书虫世界文学名著文库雾都孤儿伊犁人民出版社, 2001。

A review of Oliver Twist

A review of Oliver Twist

A review of Oliver TwistOliver Twist, one of the most famous works of Charles Dickens’, is a novel reflecting the tragic fact of the life in Britain in 18th century. The book was originally published in Bentley's Miscellany as a serial, in monthly installments that began appearing in the month of February 1837 and continued through April 1839. George Cruikshank provided one steel etching per month to illustrate each installment.Oliver Twist is the first novel in the English language to center throughout on a child protagonist and is also notable for Dickens' unromantic portrayal of criminals and their sordid lives. An early example of the social novel, the book calls the public's attention to various contemporary social evils, including the workhouse, child labor and the recruitment of children as criminals. Dickens mocks the hypocrisies of the time by surrounding the novel's serious themes with sarcasm and dark humor. The novel may have been inspired by the story of Robert Blincoe, an orphan whose account of his hardships as a child laborer in a cotton mill was widely read in the 1830s.Like many of his later novels, its central theme is the hardship faced by the dispossessed and those of the outside of toilet society. Oliver himself is born in a workhouse and treated cruelly there as was the norm at the time for pauper children, in particular by Bumble, a parish council official or beadle The story follows Oliver as he escapes the workhouse and runs away to London. Here he receives an education in villainy from the criminal gang of Fagin that includes the brutal thief Bill Sikes, the famous artful Dodger and Nancy, Bill whore. Oliver is rescued by the intervention of a benefactor - Mr. Brownlow - but the mysterious Monks gets the gang to kidnap the boy again. Nancy intervenes but is murdered viciously by Sikes after she has showed some redeeming qualities and has discovered Monk sinister intention. The story closes happily and with justice for Bumble and the cruel Monks who has hidden the truth of Oliver parentage out of malice. Accusations were made that the book glamorized crime (like the ewgate Group of the period) but Dickens wisely disassociated himself from criminal romances. His achievement was in fact in presenting the underworld and problems of poverty to the well-off in a way rarely attempted previouslyThe hero of Oliver Twist, a poor, innocent orphan boy, stands out in this story as the main character but it is the supporting characters that allow this novel of much content to develop a much more satisfying and believable theme. With "Good V.S. Evil" as one of the major conflicts, in such categories are the secondary characters found as well. Three main auxiliary characters of Oliver Twist aid the elaboration of the story; these significant characters are Mr. Brownlow representing purity, integrity and goodness, Nancy as partially righteous, partially villain and lastly on the other extreme of the scale: Fagin, the symbol of evil, corruption and manipulation. Throughout the story we are introduced to each of these characters through an omniscient point of view, and are able to categorize them according to their personalities, thoughts and actions. With their differing levels of honesty and social status, each of them play a crucial role in the development of the story's theme. As most of the author's characters, Mr. Brownlow too, is brought out with an indirect presentation but it is not long after introducing him that his wholesome goodness is revealed to us. Though at first he accuses Oliver of thieving, his concern over Oliver's welfare on the street is a direct hint of his innocence which successfully helps him convince Oliver to board at his house. A generous and trusting man he was, perhaps too good a man to be true; but with all the malicious characters in the story, a heroic and pure persona was needed to ensure a happy ending. With honesty and great wealth as his prime qualities, he assists Oliver in his times of need and demonstrates to society with an exemplary touch, the attributes of a perfect citizen. As the positive extreme in both social status and benevolence, Mr. Brownlow is a definite aid in the development of the theme throughout the novel. Nancy, for us, must be the weakest character. Trapped between wanting to help Oliver evade Fagin's exploitation and her dedicated love for Sikes; she fails to survive to the end as she is convicted and ironically murdered by her own husband : Sikes, a brutal and abusive man. But there is a great need for this secondary character in the story, she serves not only as a tie between the scenes at the different house holds but as well she is the only hope of salvation for Oliver. Without her, Oliver may have never had the chance to grow up in a loving home and learn to be proper in his actions and pure in the soul. Even though her ununderstandable love for Sikes is honest most of the time, her own soul held an even greater devotion to Oliver, for she gets her own husband drunk and comes to Oliver's rescue. Nancy sees in Oliver the innocence of her ownchildhood being robbed by Fagin's deceiving malpractice. Nancy provides the story with a second chance for Oliver into a proper, honest world. It costs her, her life, but she prospers in helping Oliver as well as doing a lot of justice for society. Able to save Oliver from evil and putting evil itself in prison, Nancy triumphs above all her devilish acquaintances and is the pivoting point of Oliver's return to safety. Not only as a way to introduce new plots in the tale, but as well as the theme's greatest support, she is a genial character that could have only been created after much planning and thought.Fagin was a Jew described by the author in such a manner that one may think Dickens were racist to some extent. His beliefs of Jew's were that a Jew seldom thieves, but is worse than a thief when he encourages others to thieve. In his opinion, "In every town there is a Jew, resident or tramping;... if a robbery is effected, the property is hid till a Jew is found, and a bargain is then made." Fagin is described in such a style in this tale that one is almost forced to dislike his character. Old, ugly and a "Jew", Fagin is associated with principal atmospheric devices that give the novel unique power. Not only does Fagin seek to capture Oliver forever by making him an accomplice in crime, but it also seems that he has supernatural powers to seek him out of wherever his good friends may hide him. Truly the antagonist, Fagin and his amoral forces are to Oliver as the devil himself is to a sinless human. Even though highly complex and interpretive in its content, "Oliver Twist", like an escape story, where the bad guy gets what he deserves and the good guy lives happily ever after, its main plot follows this same pattern. Fagin, as he deserves, ends up in prison and goes mentally insane, while Oliver, the innocent young boy, gets a great home and a loving family. But Fagin is not all vile, because after going to jail, where he realizes that all his stolen goods will do him no good now, he gives Oliver back what was once his, his mother Agnes' ring; which in turn unleashes Oliver's ancestry and gives the story a more coherent plot. It is the complex secondary characters of this story that permit it to reach out and touch all the levels of society; these being the rich, the poor and the man in the middle. These same three characters are what grant this story with a theme that captures reality in the midst of England's nineteenth century. As revealed throughout the tale, England's nineteenth century was an epoch of much poverty and great social problems which resulted in a society of two opposing classes: the wealthy and the poor. Within these two classes lay two other opposing forces: the good and the bad. In the same way that good and badexist within all classes in the novel, the same thing can be said about real life. What the theme of this story says about reality is that in today’s society, it doesn't matter whether you are rich or poor, educated or not, most competent human beings possess the ability to judge right from wrong and are therefore free to make whatever choices in their lives they wish to make, provided though, that they can live with the consequences of their decisions. In Oliver's case, even just as a very young boy, he too was able to judge right from wrong and ends up choosing not to steal. As a result of his decision, young Oliver is given a happy home and a promising future. On the other hand, Fagin's judgment is not so proficient and concluding, he remains with nothing but insanity and a solemn life in jail 'till his last day comes about. For me, the nature of goodness is one of the most necessary character for a person. Goodness is to humans what water is to fish. He who is without goodness is an utterly worthless person. On the contrary, as the famous saying goes, ‘The fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose’, he who is with goodness undoubtedly is a happy and useful person. People receiving his help are grateful to him and he also gets gratified from what he has done, and thus he can do well to both the people he has helped and himself. To my disappointment, nowadays some people seem to doubt the existence of the goodness in humanity. They look down on people’s honesty and kindness, thinking it foolish of people to be warm-hearted. As a result, they show no sympathy to those who are in trouble and seldom offer to help others. On the other hand, they attach importance to money and benefit. In their opinion, money is the only real object while emotions and morality are nihility. If they cannot get profit from showing their ‘kindness’, they draw back when others are faced with trouble and even hit a man when he is down. They are one of the sorts that I really detest.Francis Bacon said in his essay, ‘Goodness, of all virtues and dignities of the mind, is the greatest, being the character of the Deity, and without it, man is a busy, mischievous, wretched thing, no better than a kind of vermin.’That is to say a person without goodness is destined to lose everything. Therefore, I, a kind person, want to tell those ‘vermin-to-be’ to learn from the kind Oliver and regain the nature of goodness.。

Social Influences in Oliver TwistAbstract:Oliver Twist is one of Charles Dickens’most famous novels of critical realism.Through the contrast with the modern social reality, the paper discusses the enlightenment which we get from the novel. The paper also expounds the impact which the novel brings to the social development, including negative and progressive influences. Finally, a conclusion is drawn that Oliver Twist has a far-reaching social influence.Key words:Oliver Twist;Victorian Age; Social Reality;Social InfluenceⅠ.Social Influences in Oliver TwistIntroductionOliver Twist, subtitled The Parish Boy’s Progress, is the second novel by English author Charles Dickens, published by Richard Bentley in 1838. The hero of this novel was Oliver Twist, an orphan, who was thrown into a world full of poverty and crime. He suffered enormous pain, such as hunger, thirst, beating and abuse. Dickens specifically showed the terrible life of the people at the bottom of society in this novel.Oliver Twist was a serious literary which contains many social problems existing in Victorian Age. As Oliver Twist was a social novel, it tried to call the public’s attention to various contemporary evils, including the Poor Law. This novel was set in the time when the Poor Law which stated that poor people should work in workhouse, child labor and the recruitment of children as criminals had just passed. In Oliver Twist, Dickens mixed realism and merciless satire into one way to depict the effects of industrialism on 19th century in England and to criticize the bitter Poor Law. In the novel, Dickens also attacked the hypocrisy and flaws of institutions, including the society’s government, the laws and criminal system and their ways to deal with poor people. Meanwhile, Dickens points out the sorrow inflicted by those systems and their deep injustice. At the same time, Oliver Twist’s social influence was very significant for the people who live in the modern society of 21st century. Therefore, this paper mainly talks about the social problems and social influence of Oliver Twist through the deep analysis of social reality in Victorian and modern society.Ⅱ. Social Influence in the NovelA.Negative Influence reflected in the NovelAlthough the Great Britain became the most stronger nation after the Industrial Revolution on the surface, but there were many social problems at the same time. In the Oliver Twist, Dickens showed two major social problems: money-worship and hypocrisy. At that time, poor children lived a tragic life and suffered from hunger and abuse. Among them Oliver Twist was the luckiest one as he was finally adopted by a kind person. In Oliver Twist, Dicke-ns exposed the social problems which concealed in the society and told us that money-worship and hypocrisy always existed. By desc-ription of the lower class in Britain, Dickens tried to arouse people’s sympathy for the poor people of the lower class.B. Progressive Influence to the development of societyOliver Twist was like a mirror lit up every corner of the British, revealed the social darkness and inequality in capitalism. Thus it had a great progressive significance to the development ofsociety. Because of the social reform, social problems had been im-proved to some extend. In modern society, Britain has become a nation of social welfare with the rapid development of economy. It is one of the earliest countries that established social security system in the form of legislative and it is also a typical high welfare state. After WWⅡ, Britain has issued a series of social security acts, such as the social insurance, social relief, social benefits. All these acts have ensured people’s basic rights. Besides, there are all kinds of charity and church organizations to those in needing support. As to the labors, their rights can get well protection and respect due to the overall development of the economy and society. And for the working class, their working and living condition all have improved and they have much more rights than before. While many great changes have happened in Britain, the gulf between the rich and the poor still exist. The orphans still suffer from hunger and thirst and have no education. Therefore, Oliver Twist still have very deep reference influence in today’s social problems.First, to recover the nature of goodness which Dickens praised in Oliver Twist. Francis Bacon said in his essay, “ Goodness, of all virt ues and dignities of the mind, is the greatest, being the character of the Deity, and without it , man is a busy, mischievous, wretched thing, no better than a kind of vermin.”Nowadays, young children often lack persistence and confidence to overcome difficulties. They are always protected by their parents and couldn’t bear failure. But if young people wantto overcome problems in the future, they need a brave heart. Just like the old saying says, “Failure is the mother of success.” Everyone should learn fr om Oliver’s kindness, persist-ence and confidence.Nowadays, as people have experienced many cheating, people barely trust each other. If things go on like this, our society will lead to a doom day. So education is the most important weapon for changing these things and it is the most important factor on the dev-elopment of one country. Political stability and economic prosperity both seems to have connect with education. So the government should improve the education policies to ensure that every child has an equal right to go to school and a serious of laws should be issue-d to protect their educational rights.Children attend school at an early age and are taught to learn many kinds of things. Among them moral education should be the most important. As the society is full of enticement of money, peo-ple don’t believe the existence of the goodness in humanity. People are turning greedy, hypocrisy, selfishness and darkness in their heart. What is worse, the distance between people is becoming more and more far away.Oliver Twist also call our attention that man is created equal. In the novel, the lower class were looking upon by the upper class, they barely had right in economy and politics. While nowadays, this condition has changed a lot through the government’s efforts. Tod-ay’s China is a little bit like the Britain at that time: fast growth in economy and sharp contradiction between the rich and the poor. Here a large number of lessons can be drawn for the novel and our government should take measures to improve the rights of people, especially working people. In general, Oliver Twist is a signal novel in all the literary works. It not only guides people, who live in the modern society, to keep away from crime and to be a good man at any time. Oliver Twist indeed educates people and has a great social influence to so-ciety both in and abroad.。

The review of Oliver Twist

The review of Oliver Twist

The Review of Oliver Twist08外语系教学一班20081601310 李腾梅Oliver Twist, one of the most famous works of Charles Dickens’, is a novel reflecting the tragic fact of the life in Britain in 18th century. The author who himself was born in a poor family wrote this novel in his twenties with a view to reveal the ugly masks of those cruel criminals and to expose the horror and violence hidden underneath the narrow and dirty streets in London. The hero of this novel was Oliver Twist, an orphan, who was thrown into a world full of poverty and crime. He suffered enormous pain, such as hunger, thirst, beating and abuse. While reading the tragic experiences of the little Oliver, I was shocked by his sufferings. I felt for the poor boy, but at the same time I detested the evil Fagin and the brutal Bill. To my relief, as was written in all the best stories, the goodness eventually conquered devil and Oliver lived a happy life in the end. One of the plots that attracted me most is that after the theft, little Oliver was allowed to recover in the kind care of Mrs. Maylie and Rose and began a new life. He went for walks with them, or Rose read to him, and he worked hard at his lessons. He felt as if he had left behind forever the world of crime and hardship and poverty. How can such a little boy who had already suffered oppressive affliction remain pure in body and mind? The reason is the nature of goodness. I think it is the most important information implied in the novel by Dickens-he believed that goodness could c onquer every difficulty. Although I don’t think goodness is omnipotent, yet I do believe that those who are kind-hearted live more happily than those who are evil-minded.The story described in Oliver Twist illustrates the evils of the Poor House's of the time and the corruption of the people who work there. It also shows the depths of London's crime with an emphasis on petty robbery and picks pocketing. The main evil character of the novel, Fagin, also referred to as "The Jew", is characterized as a money pincher with no true affections. His main goals are to exploit the people around him so he can better his station and strengthen his power. Fagin himself represents the evils of greed. Oliver, on the other hand, is the complete opposite. Innocent, and loving, Oliver represents all that is good in society. He abhors the thought of stealing, violence, or mistreatment of any sort, and though he is eager to please will not go against the morals instilled in him. He genuinely cares for others around him, and will do anything to make someone want to keep him.Oliver Twist is a story about the battles of good versus evil, with the evil continually trying to corrupt and exploit the good. It portrays the power of Love, Hate, Greed, and Revenge and how each can affect the people involved. The love between Rose and Harry in the end conquers all the obstacles between them. The hate that Monks feels for Oliver and the greed he feels towards his inheritance eventually destroys him. The revenge that Sikes inflicts on Nancy drives him almost insane and eventually to accidental suicide. Dickens' wide array of touching characters emphasizes the virtues of sacrifice, compromise, charity, and loyalty. Most importantly, though the systemfor the poor is not changed, the good in Dickens' novel outweighs the evil, and the main characters that are part of this good live happily ever after. People receiving h is help are grateful to him and he also gets gratified from what he has done, and thus he can do good to both the people he has helped and himself. They are one of the sorts that I really detest.Francis Bacon said in his essay, ‘Goodness, of all virtues and dignities of the mind, is the greatest, being the character of the Deity, and without it, man is a busy, mischievous, wretched thing, no better than a kind of v ermin.’That is to say a person without goodness is destined to lose everything. Therefore, I, a kind person, want to tell those ‘vermin-to-be’ to learn from the kind Oliver and regain the nature of goodness. As a college student, I believe that everyone is born with good and honest. Goodness is to humans what water is to fish. People without goodness are an utterly worthless person. On the contrary, as the famous saying goes, ‘The fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose’. I think it is the most important information implied in the novel by Dickens. He believed that goodness could conquer every difficulty. Although I don’t think goodness is omnipotent, yet I do believe that those who are kind-hearted live more happily than those who are evil-minded. Even though there still many people in our society who are both cruel and evil, the majority of us tend to be warm-hearted. The book Oliver Twist has made me aware of many tings. To sum up, being kind and not giving up is the secret of surviving. In all, I think we should relearn to love and care. A person who is with goodness undoubtedly is a happy and useful person. People receiving his help are grateful to him and he also gets return from what he has done, and thus he can do well to both the people he has helped and himself.。

OliverTwist(小说的读后感)

OliverTwist(小说的读后感)

OliverTwist(小说的读后感)The Pure Heart------After Reading Oliver TwistThe background of the novel was London which was called the fog city. The conflicts of the society and between labor and capital were becoming fierce. The poor people’s lives were so hard that many children became vagrants, which was a serious problem then. In this novel, the author revealed many social problems such as workhouse, child laborers, criminal groups’ seducing young people to commit crimes and so on.The novel told a story about an orphan called Oliver Twist who was brought up in the workhouse. He experienced apprentice life and struggled to run away from an undertaker’s shop. Then he wrongly got into a crime group and was forced to be with them. After going through those hardships, he got help from some kind people to know his family information and received happiness.I spend several days to read this novel and get something about my own feeling. I want to express the points that impress me most. When it told about Oliver’s first job as an assistant of a coffin shop, it showed different performance between the poor and the rich. In the novel, there was a man whose wife was died of starvation. The man desperately cried out to people and didn’t move once during his wife’s burial until he fainted to the ground. But for the rich, they cried the loudest in church usually recovered the fastest afterwards. The author made use of Oliver’s pure mind to satirize those rich people’s coldness in hearts:” Oliver was surprised to see all this, and greatly admiredthem for controlling their sadness so well.”Secondly, I am surprised by Oliver’s goodness, Nancy‘s and Rose’s kindness and Mr. Brownlow’s forgiveness, especially Na ncy’s kindness. Oliver , Nancy and Rose all went through hard life. However, they never gave up their bona. For Nancy, her man treated her so bad and the criminal group also didn’t trust her, but she gave her heart to them and little Oliver. For Mr. Brownlow, even the fact seemed to show the boy had cheated him, he was willing to believe he was a good boy.Thirdly, the will of Oliver’s father impressed me very much. He requested to give all the money to Oliver, if he was of good and kind character. But themoney would only go to Monks, if the younger turned out to be as evil as him. How upright and sensible the father was! I admire him. Finally, talking about (an offender) Sikes’ dog, a white dog, which was very loyal to its owner. Sikes tried to cover his trace by killing his dog. The dog smelt the man’s fear and ran away from him, nevertheless, it would not like to leave him. At last, it jumped to Sikes’ body and fell dead on stones. The red blood must shelter on the holy and pure body like flowers. In a word, the novel described evils and struggling with bad guys, also those pure hearts. It praised the uprightness and kindness in people’s hearts. It assailed the hypocritical actions of England’s charitable institutions andbeadles’ domineering. At the same time, the novel showed strong romanticism being filled of humanism spirit.

Oliver Twist, the eponymous protagonist of Charles Dickens' novel, is a young orphan who endures a difficult and challenging life in 19th-century London. Dickens skillfully depicts his character, highlighting his innocence and vulnerability in a harsh and unforgiving society. At the beginning of the story, Oliver is introduced as a newborn baby born in a workhouse, a place for the impoverished and destitute. His mother dies soon after his birth, and he grows up under the care of a cruel and neglectful caretaker, Mrs. Mann. From an early age, Oliver faces neglect, mistreatment, and abuse. As Oliver grows older, his innocence and determination shine through, despite the hardships he faces. He exhibits a kind and compassionate nature, which is evident in his interactions with other characters. One of Oliver's distinguishing traits is his refusal to engage in dishonest or immoral activities, even when faced with dire circumstances.Oliver's life takes a significant turn when he is sold to an undertaker, Mr. Sowerberry, after he asks for more food at the workhouse. However, Oliver faces further mistreatment and ridicule in his new environment. Due to an unfortunate series of events, he runs away from Mr. Sowerberry's house and finds himself in the bustling city of London. In London, Oliver encounters a group of young pickpockets led by the manipulative Fagin. He becomes entangled in their criminal activities but remains inherently good-natured. Oliver's pure-heartedness and empathetic nature stand in stark contrast to the morally corrupt world he finds himself in.The character of Oliver Twist is not only a symbol of innocence and virtue but also serves as a vehicle for Dickens to expose the poverty, social inequality, and corruption prevalent in Victorian society. Through Oliver's eyes, Dickens portrays the struggles and injustices faced by the lower classes, shedding light on the mistreatment of orphans and the exploitation of children.Throughout the novel, Oliver encounters various characters who shape his journey and contribute to his growth. One such character is Nancy, a young woman forced into a life of prostitution by Fagin. Nancy offers a rare glimpse of kindness and compassion in Oliver's life, ultimately sacrificing herself to protect him from the conniving Bill Sikes.Oliver's resilience and unwavering spirit eventually attract the attention of Mr. Brownlow, an affluent gentleman who senses his innocence. This encounter sets in motion a series of events that lead to Oliver's redemption and the exposure of his true identity. Oliver Twist's character reflects the themes of social injustice, poverty, and morality in Dickens' novel. His purity of heart and determination to rise above the darkness surrounding him make him a memorable and enduring literary figure. Oliver's journey serves as a powerful critique of the societal ills prevalent during the Victorian era and continues to resonate with readers worldwide.。

he was caught again by the thieves,he was going to return Mr.Browlow's book. The thieves wanted to sell the book in order to get some money.Oliver has tried his best to protect the book. From this distinctive action,Oliver had left a good impression on readers for his learning spirit.ConclusionOliver Twist is not only a story which tells a boy's miserable and bumpy childhood, but also a meaningful educational novel for all children.According to the analysis, people can have a good understanding of the protagonist's qualities. The personalities that Oliver owns are really needed.Oliver's experience and his precious personalities ——the braveness, kindness, perseverance and thirst for knowledge tell us that,no matter how hard the situation is,no matter how many difficulties are in front of us,we should never give up.Try to be a brave and kind-hearted person is important for our daily life, while to always keep the thirst for knowledge will definitely enrich Lecture Eight

Plot It is the plan, design, scheme or patterns of events in a novel, the organization of incident and character in such a way as to create curiosity and suspense in the reader, or the ordered, organized sequence of events and actions. Life has stories, but novels have plots and stories. As E. M. Forster puts it, a story is a narrative of events arranged in their time sequence, whereas a plot is a narrative of events with the emphasis falling on causality. To create good plots, the writer must have three qualities: curiosity, intelligence and a good memory.
Structure Structure and plot are closely related to each other. But there are some differences between them. The structure of a novel involves more than its story, comprising the total organization of the novel as a piece of literature or a work or art. It involves plot, thematics, and form, the overall patterning of the novel, the chapters and sections, the way in which its component parts fit together to produce a totality, a satisfying whole.

【关键词】《雾都孤儿》现实主义批判小说文体学Chapter 1 Semantic Deviation in Chapter Ten of Oliver Twist1.Satire.Satire refers to the way of using humor to that someone or something is foolish, weak, bad, etc. It is a popular writing method widely used by Dickens in writing Oliver Twist.Let see the following instants in the chapter ten of Oliver Twist.“Although Oliver had been brought up by philosophers,he … is the first law of nature.”Here the author uses it to satire the old Jew and his boys and maybe the previous churchwardens and oversees who brought little Oliver up and gave him a “perfect” tender. Those people have their own philosophy in dealing with people, but their philosophy is not the one we mention that in academic. The “Philosophy” used here to criticize the people who are good at stealing and dealing with people and thing in a filthy w ay.“…when the old gentleman was officiously dragged and pushedinto … the pursuers.”“Stopped at last! A clever blow!”The people are so kind that they “dragged” and “pushed” the old gentleman into the circle. This sentence satires the good intention of thep eople. The phrase “clever blow” was used to satire how rude and callous the lubberly fellow to the little poor boy.The word “clever” should be used to describe the human beings. However it is used here to describe a blow.So the sentence uses personification method to satire the blow on the little poor boy.2.Metaphor.Metaphor refers to a figure of speech containing an implied comparison,in which a word or phrase ordinarily and primarily used of one thing is implied to another. Here,in chapter ten, there are also some metaphors.Take the following sentences as the instants.“In an instant thewhole mystery … rushed upon the boy’s mind.”At this time,Oliver got know the real career of the old Jew and his boys. What they are doing is just like mystery. Here, the author used mystery resembles the water in the river, rushing upon the boy’s mind. The word “rush” vividly and exactly describes the power of the mystery.3.Simile.Simile refers to a direct comparison of one thing to another. The comparison is usually brought out by using “like”,“as”,“as if”,more than, resemble, suggest, may, what, more than, remind of,compare to.The followings are the examples taken from the chapter ten of Oliver Twist.“He had taken up … as hard as if he were….”This sentence is used to desc ribe how the old gentleman concentrated on his book.As we have explained in the previous, the old man saw nothing and what he cares about is only his book.He was so fascinated with the book that he forgot where he was and as if he were in his elbow-chair in his own study.“He stood for a moment … he felt as if he were … to the ground.”This sentence vividly describes how confused and frightened the little boy was at that time.He at first didn’t know what his companies are doing. So at the time when he got know the truth,he was frightened and doesn’t know what to do.The only reflect is running away, leaving away and never come back.Chapter 2 Unusual Clause Theme in Chapter Ten of Oliver TwistUnusual clause theme belongs to grammatical deviation.Grammatical deviation is departures from normal grammar. The followings are some examples taken out of the chapter ten of Oliver Twist.“…so away he went like the wind …behind him.”In this sentence, the word “away” should follows after “went”,but the author put it ahead. This can emphasize how quickly Oliver ran.At the same time,it also indicated the fear of the little poor boy.Because he didn’t know at first what his companies do,and when he recognized the truth,he was frightened and didn’t know what todo.“Away they fly … out run the people … the cry.”In these sentences, the preposition of every sentence was put ahead the sentence. The author wrote them in this way to describe how fast and actively the people of all kind are interested in running after the thief.Through reading these sentences,we can image the scene vividly.References:[1]Dickens,Charles.Olives Twist[M].

On Oliver TwistⅠIntroductionOliver Twist was written by Charles Dickens (1812—1870), who was a novelist of Britain in 19th century. This book incisively and vividly exposes the darkness of underworld and hypocrisy of charitable institutions and the poor law in Britain. Charles Dickens’s works firstly developed critical realism, impacted the literature history of Britain profoundly and were popular at that time as well as nowadays.Charles Dickens was born in sailor family in Portsea in Portsmouth. His father was a seaman with little salary to support the family. When Charles Dickens was 10, he and his whole family were sent into jail because of great debts. At the age of 11, when we were busy in playing all kinds of games, Charles Dickens had to bear the heavy housework. Afterwards, he experienced various works and suffered a great deal of hardship. However, these experiences became sources of his writing and helped him form the critical realism writing style. Many of his novels embodied that he paid much attention to describe the tough lives of labouring people of Britain at that time. Charles Dickens is considered the greatest writer of the Victorian period. In 1837, his comic novel Pickwick Papers began to be serialized on the newspaper, which made him the most popular English author of his time. The serialization of such works as Oliver Twist(1838), and the Old Curiosity Shops(1841) followed. And this is his first period as a writer. After a trip to America, Dickens’ second period of his writing career came. He wrote America Notes and A Christmas Carol and the like. From 1848 to 1861, it was the boom period of his writing career. He wrote many great and popular works such as David Copperfield, A Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations. But in his late years, he was in bad health. Unfortunately, he died of heart attack in 1870. Although he passed away, he was remembered by people, and so were his works.ⅡThe storyOliver twist was born an orphan. His father died of illness before Oliver’s birth. At the night Oliver was born, his mother died after giving birth to him. Soon, he was sent to a workhouse, in which he was forced to do labor but with little food. What’s more, he was finally expelled from the workhouse after requiring more porridge. Afterwards, he becamean apprentice of an undertaker’s shop. He was despised misunderstood by the companions in the shop. Because he couldn’t bear the starvation and ill-treatment in this hell on earth, he ran away to London, where he fell in with a gang of the underworld. At the very beginning, he did not notice that they were thieves, because they treat him kindly and promised him to offer him a shelter in London. He trusted them easily. One day, when he hung on the street with his companions, he was arrested because an old gentleman who accused him stole his handkerchief. In fact, the thief is Mr.Sikes, Oliver’s companion. Luckily, someone witnessed that Oliver was not the criminal. The old gentleman, Mr. Brownlow was sorry for misunderstanding him. He brought Oliver home and took good care of him when he was ill. This was the first time Oliver felt the warm of family, and he was very grateful for that. But he never thought about that the thieves, who were sent by his brother. His brother wanted misled Oliver to be a thief so that he can have their father’s possessions all himself. But Oliver destroyed his brother’s plan with the help of the old gentleman and his aunt, Lucy. In the end of the book, all evils were punished by law, and Oliver greeted his beautiful life.ⅢMy view of the bookOliver Twist is an early work of Charles Dickens, in some degree I think the character Oliver and the author have many things in common. Charles had unhappy childhoods, so did Oliver. Charles never give up always try every means to study more and he finally succeeded. Similarly, Oliver kept his kind heart all the time, so many people willing to give him a hand and he won a happy ending. What impressed me mostly in the book is that Oliver never gives up himself though go through so many difficulties. I can hardly image how could he bears these sufferings with his thin shoulders. I resume that if I were he, what would do, give up or carry on? Seriously, I not so sure about that. I believe that many people will have the same feeling. Because with the development of society, we can easily get what we need, and sometimes we think we can succeed without much troubles. However, lives are not all like that, there is no life without difficulty. We should strengthen our will to overcome the difficulties in life, so we can create a better life. In this summer, there is another person who gives me inspiration. She took part in a program named The V oice of China this summer. Her name is Zhang Yuexia, who is a blind girl, but she can sing beautiful songs. Although she is blind, she stilllearns to play all kinds of instruments. We can image that how many difficulties she comes cross, but she never give up. Finally, though she did not win the champion, she inspires many people, both the healthy and the disable. One of the lesson the book teach me is never giving up, just like an old saying, if you wish really hard, you will get what you want! From the book, I also learn that another important character that we human beings should possess is always keeping a kind heart. A person can have no money even have no knowledge, but he or she can’t live without kindness. However, to my disappointment, more and more people in the society don’t believe the existence of the goodness in humanity. They look down upon those people who don’t have much money even though they are very kind. They always attach importance on money. It’s a bad current tendency in society. We should remain our nature of kindness. Oliver keeps his kindness, so many people willing to help him when he is in trouble. On the contrary, Mr.Sikes always does harm to others, leading to the end that everyone turns their back on him. As an old saying goes: kindness can overcome evil. If we all hold kindness, our society will become more harmonious and our lives will be more beautiful.。

Suggested areas for further study7. Summary1. IntroductionStylistic analysis can be carried out at the phonological level from the following four typical aspects, namely, elision, mispronunciation and substandard pronunciation; sound patterning; onomatopoeia; and metrical patterning.2. Elision, mispronunciation, and substandard pronunciation2.1 ElisionElision refers to the omission of a sound or sounds in speech. Elided forms are perfectly acceptable in ordinary conversational speech, especially in rapid speech. Yet, when rendered in written form, they often become markers of a very informal or very casual style, with a hint of sloppiness and laziness in speech. The elision of one of two consonants in a boundary cluster is usually characterized as a vulgarism (Qian Yuan, 2006: 25):(1) He went away. //(2) I want to go. //(3) Give me. //Below is an example used in literature:(4) (Houlden makes a phone call. He is very drunk.)“Who is this?” this very cold, lady’s voice said.“This is me. Houlden Caulfield. Lemme speaka Sally, please.”“Sally’s asleep… Do you know what time it is?”“Yeah. Wanna talka Sally. Very important. Put her on.” (L. D. Salinger, The Catcher in the Rye)There are three types of elision: 1) aphesis, which is the omission of an initial part of a word, such as “’mid” (for “amid”); 2) syncope, which is the omission of a medial part of a word, such as “ne’er” (for “never”); and 3) apocope, which is the omission of a final part of word, such as “wi’”(for “with”).Such omissions are often used by poets to change the pronunciations of the original words so as to better and more easily arrange sound patterns to achieve the intended communicative effects. (Wang Shouyuan, 2000: 23-24).2.2 Mispronunciation and substandard pronunciationIn order to vividly describe a character, the literary writer may choose to let his character mispronounce certain words or simply pronounce them in sub-standard ways (Wang Shouyuan, 2000: 24). For example,(5) “Ah!” said Joe. “There’s another conwict off.” (C. Dickens, Great Expectations)(6) “We shot him, Granny!” I cried. “We shot the bastud!” (W. Faulkner, Unvanquished)(7) He asked, “Wul-well, was he ever a c-c-c-cockroach, likeArchy?” (J. Updike, A Sense of Shelter)(8) “If you do not go away from these premises before night,I shall feel bound—indeed, I am bound-to-to-toquit the premises myself!” (H. Melville, Bartleby the Scrivener)(9) “Why, how long you been on the island, Jim?”“I come heah de night arter you’s killed.”“What, all that time?”“Yes-indeedy…. How long you ben on the islan’?”“Since the night I got killed.” (Mark Twain, Huckleberr y Fin) For other examples, see a passage taken from Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God(Qin Xiubai, 2002: 403); and several passages listed by Wang Zuoliang & Ding Wangdao (1987: 124-127).3. Sound patterningSound or phonemic patterning refers to the matching of identical or similar sounds between two or more words. Sound patterning occurs among content words which are not far away from each other. (Qian Yuan, 2006: 26) In English, phonemes may be patterned in different ways. The most important types of patterning are alliteration, assonance, consonance, reverse rhyme, pararhyme and rhyme, which are illustrated below with formulae and examples:1) Alliteration: C VC C VC (e.g., gr eat, gr oan; w eal, w oe)2) Assonance: C V C C V C (e.g., gr ea t, sl a ve; c u t, r u n)3) Consonance: CV C CV C (e.g., grea t, bea t; fi ts, star ts)4) Reverse rhyme: CVC CVC (e.g., ti me, ti de; wi th, wi ll)5) Pararhyme: C V C C V C (e.g., s i ng, s o ng; l i ve, l o ve)6) Rhyme: C VC C VC (e.g., gr eat, l ate; m e, t ea; w imp, l imp)Sound patterning is not only a source of aestheticsatisfaction, but also a phonological means of emphasis, establishing relationship between the patterned words (Qian Yuan, 2006: 27). What follows is a discussion of the typical types of sound patterning.3.1 AlliterationAlliteration can be defined in its narrow and broad senses: Alliteration in its narrow sense refers to the repetition of the initial consonant cluster in stressed syllables (Wang Shouyuan, 2000: 91) while alliteration in its broad sense means the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words (The New Oxford Dictionary of English). Below is the discussion of alliteration used in different genres.3.1.1 Alliteration used in poetryAlliteration is frequently used in poetry, including old English poems such as Beowulf. Below is a typical example of alliteration used in modern English poetry:(10) The fair breeze blew, the white foam flew,The furrow followed free;We were the first that ever burstInto that silent sea. (S. T. Coleridge, The rime of the Ancient Mariner)3.1.2 Alliteration used in proverbsAlliteration abounds in proverbs:(11) Dumb dogs are dangerous.(12) A fair face may hide a foul heart.(13) Fortune favours fools.(14) Spare the rod, spoil the child.(15) Money makes the mare go.(16) Many a little makes a mickle.(17) Parents bear children, bore teenagers and board newweds.3.1.3 Alliteration used in idiomatic expressionsAlliteration also abounds in idioms as is used in the following examples: as busy as a bee, as cool as cucumber, as fit as a fiddle, from top to toe, safe and sound, etc.3.1.4 Alliteration used in titlesSome authors make use of alliteration in their titles to appeal to the readers, such as the titles of Pride and Prejudice (by Jane Austin), Sense and Sensibility (by Jane Austin), and The Lady of the Lake (by Walter Scott).3.1.5 Alliteration used in advertisementsAlliteration is frequently used in advertisements for a musical effect on the part of the audience:(18) C ut, C olour, C larity and C arat Weight. (ad of diamond)(19) S ensuously S mooth. M ysteriously M ellow. G loriouslyG olden. Who can resist the magic of C amus XOC ognac? (ad of wine in France)3.1.6 Alliteration used in tongue-twistersAlliteration is a feature of tongue-twisters. For example,(20) She sells seashells on the seashore.(21) Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled pepper. In Chinese there is no alliteration but Shuangsheng, such as 参次荇菜, 辗转反侧. Words formed with Shuangsheng are of little rhetorical function in Chinese, such as鲜血, 美满, 蜘蛛, 琵琶, 伶俐, 忐忑, 坎坷, 嘹亮, 游弋, 拖沓, etc.3.2 AssonanceAssonance is the repetition of identical vowel or diphthong in stressed syllables. It is one of the important phonological features of literary texts. For example,(22) Think from how many treesDead leaves are broughtTo earth on seed or wing…(Vernon Watkins, The Compost Heap)3.3 ConsonanceConsonance is the repetition of the final consonant cluster in stressed syllables. Consonance may be employed to replace rhyme or to link together the key words of a text. For example,(23) Nothing lovelier than that lonely call,Bare and singular, like a gull,And three notes or four, then that was all.It drew up from the quiet like a wall,Waited, sang, and vanishing, was still. (Jon Swan, In Her Song She Is Alone)3.4 RhymeRhyme is defined in Concise Oxford Dictionary as the “identity of sounds between words or verse lines extending back from the end to the last fully accent ed vowel and not further” and in New Oxford Dictionary of English as the “correspondence of sound between words or the endings of words, especially when these are used at the ends of lines of poetry”.Rhyme can be divided into the following four types: end-rhyme, internal rhyme, half rhyme, and eye rhyme (e.g., the rhyme between love and grove), among which end-rhyme is most popular. End-rhyme can be further divided into the following three types: masculine rhyme (one-syllable rhyme), such as the rhyme between night and bright; feminine rhyme (two-syllable rhyme), such as the rhyme between candy and dandy; and triple rhyme (polysyllabic rhyme), such as the rhyme between tenderly and slenderly.4. OnomatopoeiaThere are two types of onomatopoeia in English—lexical onomatopoeia and phonemic onomatopoeia.4.1 Lexical onomatopoeia—onomatopoeic wordsLexical onomatopoeia refers to the use of words formed in imitation of the natural sounds associated with the object or action involved (Wang Shouyuan, 2000: 104). Onomatopoeic words can imitate various kinds of sounds in the world: 1) the sounds of nature such as flash, swish, whirl, spatter, crack, splash, gurgle and rumble in English; 2) the sounds of animals such as yap, bark, howl, neigh, moo, roar, growl, mew, quack, cuckoo, hum, crow, buzz, and hiss; 3) the sounds of tools such as tinkling, tickling, banging, clashing, creaking, and clattering in English; and 4) the sounds of human beings such as giggle, chuckle, mumble, whimper, whisper, clap, groan, and chatter. The use of such words helps to reinforce the directness and vividness of language expression to stimulate one’s hearing yielding a symbolic association, and to convey the direct perception and experience of sounds by the language user. Below are some examples used in literature:(24) The leaves rustled in the breeze.(25) The teacher cracked him on the hand with a ruler. (Macmillan Dictionary)(26) I heard the rataplan of horses on the street.(27) The jingle of bells announced the arrival of the ice-cream truck.Onomatopoeic words are said to be onomatopoeic, or echoic, i.e., their sounds are imitative of their senses; but the relationship between the sound and sense of a word is weakly iconic. Some linguists have rightly pointed out that “onomatopoeia i s actually the mutual reinforcement of sense bysound and sound by sense”. (Qian Yuan, 2006: 28)4.2 Phonemic onomatopoeia—phonaesthesiaSome phonemes in English are said to be associated with some specific senses. For example, initial fl- in flame, flare, flicker, flimmer evokes “emission of light”, whereas final -ash in bash, brash, clash, crash, dash, fash, gash, hash, lash, mash, rash, slash, smash, splash, trash connotes “violence” and/or “speed”. In flash these two phonaesthemes appear together, and t he meaning “violent emission of light” is qu ite appropriate (Perrine, 1977: 201). And the sound m is often held to be symbolic of a low and deep sound; the sounds s and z of the sounds of wind and water. It is held that the use or recurrence of such phonemes in a text unit suggests certain natural sounds which reinforce the meaning conveyed in that text unit (Wang Shouyuan, 2000: 106-107). For example,(28) Or by a cider-press, with patient look,Thou watchest the last oozings hours by hours. (John Keats, To Autumn)The consonants /??/ and / / in the above example are perhaps felt to be imitate the sounds of apples being squeezed in the cider-press.5. Metrical patterning5.1 MetreThe metrical or rhythmic patterning of English verse is usually analyzed in terms of metre. The analysis of the metre of a poem usually consists of two steps. The first step is to examine the type of foot it has. Foot is actually the unit of stressed and unstressed syllables which is repeated to form a metrical pattern. The names of the different types of foot most frequentlyfound in English poetry are as follows: iamb (an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed one: ⅴ.∕), trochee (a stressed syllable followed by an unstressed one: .∕ⅴ), anapest (two unstressed syllables follow ed by a stressed one:ⅴⅴ.∕), dactyl (a stressed syllable followed by two unstressed ones: .∕ⅴⅴ), spondee (two stressed syllables:.∕.∕), and pyrrhic (two unstressed syllables:ⅴⅴ).The second step in analyzing the metre is to see how many feet there are in a line.Lines with one foot are referred to as monometre, lines that contain two feet are described as dimetre, those with three feet as trimetre, and those containing four feet are described as being in tetrameter while those with five feet as pentametre. Lines with six feet are hexametres, with seven are heptameters, and with eight are octametres.5.2 Conventional forms and poetic functions of metre and sound5.2.1 Conventional forms of metre and soundAt different times, different patterns of metre and sound have developed and become accepted as ways of structuring poems. Below are the conventional forms of metre and sound in poetry, which are to be dealt with in detail in the chapter of “Poetic Stylistics”: couplets, quatrains, blank verse, sonnet, free verse, and limericks.5.2.2 Poetic functions of sound and metreReasons for poets using sound and metrical patterning include: 1) for aesthetic pleasure; 2) to conform to a convention/style/poetic form—as with clothes and buildings, poetry has fashions, and different forms of sound patterning have been popular at different times; 3) to experiment or innovate with a form; 4) to demonstrate technical skills, and forintellectual pleasure; 5) for emphasis or contrast; 6) onomatopoeia. (Thornborrow and Wareing, 2000: 43-45)6. Suggested areas for further studyIn our eyes, the result of phonological-level stylistic analysis can be applied to other fields at least such as the following: 1) phonological-level stylistic analysis and literary appreciation; 2) phonological-level stylistic analysis and TEFL; and 3) phonological-level stylistic analysis (esp. the use of substandard pronunciation) and translation.7. SummaryIn this chapter, phonological-level stylistic features are analyzed from the following four aspects: elision, mispronunciation, and substandard pronunciation; sound patterning; onomatopoeia; and metrical patterning. And it is pointed out that the result of phonological-level stylistic analysis can shed light on and be applied to such fields as literary appreciation, TEFL, translation.References for further readingLeech, G. Stylistic Analysis on Oliver Twist Writtenby Charles DickensAbstractOliver Twist belongs torealistic social critical novel. It is one of the very famous novels written by Dickens. Many books and works have been made to study it. However, few of them study it style, andin this novel, many stylistic means are used. Therefore,in this paper, the author chooses chapter ten as an example to analyses the style of the novel from stylistic view.

Chapter 1 Semantic Deviation in Chapter Ten ofOliver Twist1.1 SatireSatire refers to the way of using humor to that someone or something is foolish, weak, bad, etc. It is a popular writing method widely used by Dickens inwriting Oliver Twist. Let see the following instants in the chapter ten of Oliver Twist.“Although Oliver had been brought up by philosophers, he …is the first law of nature.”Here the author uses it to satire the old Jew and his boys and maybe the previous churchwardens and oversees who brought little Oliver up and gave him a “perfect”tender. Those people have their own philosophy in dealing with people, but their philosophy is not the one we mention that in academic. The “Philosophy” used here to criticize the people who are good at stealing and dealing with people and thing in a filthy way.“…when the old gentleman was officiously dragged and pushed into …the pursuers.”“Stopped at last! A clever blow!”The people are so kind that they “dragged” and “pushed” the old gentleman into the circle. This sentence satires the good intention of the people. The phrase “clever blow” was used to satire how rude and callous the lubberly fellow to the little poor boy. The word “clever” should be used to describe the human beings. However it is used here to describe a blow. So the sentence uses personification method to satire the blow on the little poor boy.2.2 MetaphorMetaphor refers to a figure of speech containing an implied comparison, in which a word or phrase ordinarily and primarily used of one thing is implied to another. Here, in chapter ten, there are also some metaphors. Take the following sentences as the instants.“In an instant the whole mystery …rushed upon the boy’s mind.”At this time, Oliver got know the real career of the old Jew and his boys. What they are doing is just like mystery. Here, the author used mystery resembles the water in the river, rushing upon the boy’s mind. The word “rush”vividly and exactly describes the power of the mystery.2.3 SimileSimile refers to a direct comparison of one thing to another. The comparison is usually brought out by using “like”, “as”, “as if”, more than, resemble, suggest, may, what, more than, remind of, compare to. The followings are the examples taken from the chapter ten of Oliver Twist.“He had taken up …as hard as if he were….”This sentence is used to describe how the old gentleman concentrated on his book. As we have explained in the previous, the old man saw nothing and what he cares about is only his book. He was so fascinated with the book that he forgot where he was and as if he were in his elbow-chair in his own study.“He stood for a moment… he felt as if he were …to the ground.”This sentence vividly describes how confused and frightened the little boy was at that time. He at first didn’t know what his companies are doing. So at the time when he got know the truth, he was frightened and doesn’t know what to do. The only reflect is running away, leaving away and never come back.Chapter 2 Unusual Clause Theme in Chapter Tenof Oliver TwistUnusual clause theme belongs to grammatical deviation. Grammatical deviation is departures from normal grammar. The followings are some examples taken out of the chapter ten of Oliver Twist.“…so away he wentlike the wind…behind him.”In this sentence, the word “away” should follows after “went”, but the author put it ahead. This can emphasize how quickly Oliver ran. At the same time, it also indicated the fear of the little poor boy. Because he didn’t know at first what his companies do, and when he recognized the truth, he was frightened and didn’t know what to do.“Away they fly… out run the people … the cry.”In these sentences, the preposition of every sentence was put ahead the sentence. The author wrote them in this way to describe how fast and actively the people of all kind are interested in running after the thief. Through reading these sentences, we can image the scene vividly.Bibliography[1] Dickens, Charles.
