This procedure is without cost to you and is designed to eliminate the need for lengthy and expensive legal proceedings. In the CAMVAP program, impartial third-par-ty arbitrators conduct hearings at mutually convenient times and places in an informal environment. These impartial arbitrators re-view the positions of the parties, make deci-sions and, where appropriate, render awards to resolve disputes. CAMVAP decisions are fast, fair and final as the arbitrator's award is binding on both you and Volvo Cars of Cana-da Corp. The CAMVAP services are available in all Canadian territories and provinces. For more information, without charge or obliga-tion, call your CAMVAP provincial adminis-trator directly at 1-800-207-0685, or visit their website at www.camvap.ca.02 Service and maintenance82013 Service and Maintenance Requirements02Customer Preparation ServiceYour Volvo has received a comprehensiveCustomer Preparation Service. Your retail fa-cility has performed a Customer PreparationService which includes a complete inspec-tion and servicing of your vehicle. The Cus-tomer Preparation Service (CPS) is a key partof a comprehensive maintenance scheduledeveloped by Volvo for your vehicle.Oil and Filter Change IntervalThe correct oil and filter interval is every10.000 miles = 16,000 km or 12 monthsWHICHEVER COMES FIRST. For service in-tervals beyond 150,000 miles / 240,000 kilo-meters, please consult your authorized Volvoretailer.Cabin Air Filter All Models•Replacement every 20,000 miles (32,000km)•Replace at least once a year or more oftenin heavy traffic and dirty/dusty areas.Maintenance SchedulingMaintenance intervals have usually been de-termined by accumulated mileage. As drivingconditions and operational demands differ, these factors have a major influence on rou-tine maintenance. For these reasons Volvorecommends that your maintenance sched-ule services and oil filter changes be basedon a combination of time and mileage. All vehicles except XC90The Text Window in the instrument panel willdisplay a message when vehicle mainte-nance is required.1st display when maintenance interval isnear: "Book time for maintenance"2nd display when maintenance is required:"Time for regular maintenance"3rd display when maintenance is overdue:"Maintenance overdue"XC90The message "Time for regular maintenance"will display when the maintenance intervalhas been reached. The MINIMUM SCHEDULED MAINTE-NANCE, for which you are responsible, be-gins at 10.000 miles = 16,000 km or every 12months whichever comes first.Volvo recommends that you bring your vehi-cle in for service at least once a year regard-less of mileage. For service intervals beyond150,000 miles / 240,000 kilometers, consultyour authorized Volvo retailer.A maintenance Service Operations Chart, onpage14, details these service requirements. They are listed by engine type with requiredemission related service indicated.Service SupportDiscuss your vehicle's special servicingneeds with your Volvo Retail Facility's Ser-vice Staff. They can tailor a maintenance pro-gram based on your requirements. Your Vol-vo Retailer has access to the latest up-to-date technical information, special tools, andadvanced training for their technicians. Thissupport is an important advantage to you,the Volvo owner, as systems become moresophisticated and intricate.Servicing your Volvo should be done at yourconvenience. Therefore, plan to make yourappointments ahead of time so that your re-tailer can schedule the right personnel andequipment to be available for the work yourVolvo requires.Should you have any questions concerningservice, parts, or warranty coverage, yourVolvo retailer will be happy to answer themfor you. Should you require additional infor-mation, they can further assist you by con-tacting Volvo's Regional personnel for clarifi-cation.2013 Service and Maintenance Requirements02Remember - you should always exercise your right to:•Receive an estimate of costs before any repair work is performed;•Receive prior notification of any additional repairs;•Receive a copy of the repair order, includ-ing those for warranty repairs;•Review repairs completed under warranty.ServicingItems you should check at regular mainte-nance intervals and periodically when re-fueling: •Engine oil level •Coolant level •Washer fluid•Tire inflation pressure•Brake and clutch system fluid levels •Exterior lights (headlights, turn-signals, etc.)Fuel Requirements02Octane RatingMINIMUMTypical pump octane labelVolvo recommends premium fuel for best performance, but using 87 octane 1 or above will not affect engine reliability.Volvo engines are designed to achieve rated horsepower, torque, and fuel economy per-formance using premium 91 octane fuel. In demanding conditions, such as operating the vehicle in hot weather, towing a trailer, or driving for extended periods at higher alti-tudes than normal, it may be advisable to switch to higher octane fuel (91 or higher) or to change gasoline brands to fully utilize yourengines capacity, and for the smoothest pos-sible operation.Fuel FormulationsDo not use gasoline that contains lead as a knock inhibitor, and do not use lead addi-tives. Besides damaging the exhaust emis-sion control systems on your vehicle, lead has been strongly linked to certain forms of cancer. Many fuels contain benzene as a solvent. Un-burned benzene has been strongly linked to certain forms of cancer. If you live in an area where you must fill your own gas tank, take precautions. These may include:•standing upwind away from the filler noz-zle while refueling•refueling only at gas stations with vapor recovery systems that fully seal the mouth of the filler neck during refueling•wearing neoprene gloves while handling a fuel filler nozzle.Use of AdditivesWith the exception of gas line antifreeze dur-ing winter months, do not add solvents, thickeners, or other store-bought additives to your vehicle's fuel, cooling, or lubricating systems. Overuse may damage your engine, and some of these additives contain organi-cally volatile chemicals. Do not needlessly expose yourself to these chemicals.Deposit control gasoline (detergent additives)Volvo recommends the use of detergent gas-oline to control engine deposits. Detergent gasoline is effective in keeping injectors and1AKI (ANTI KNOCK INDEX) is an average of the Research Octane Number (RON) and the Mo-tor Octane Number (MON), MON+RON/2.G 028920Fuel Requirements02 intake valves clean. Consistent use of depos-it control gasolines will help ensure gooddrivability and fuel economy. If you are notsure whether the gasoline contains depositcontrol additives, check with the service sta-tion operator.Unleaded fuelEach Volvo has a three-way catalytic con-verter and must use only unleaded gasoline.U.S. and Canadian regulations require thatpumps delivering unleaded gasoline be la-belled "UNLEADED". Only these pumps havenozzles which fit your vehicle's filler inlet. It isunlawful to dispense leaded fuel into a vehi-cle labelled "unleaded gasoline only". Lead-ed gasoline damages the three-way catalyticconverter and the heated oxygen sensor sys-tem. Repeated use of leaded gasoline willlessen the effectiveness of the emission con-trol system and could result in loss of emis-sion warranty coverage. State and local vehi-cle inspection programs will make detectionof misfueling easier, possibly resulting inemission test failure for misfueled vehicles.Gasoline containing alcohol andethers (oxygenated fuels)Some fuel suppliers sell gasoline containing"oxygenates" which are usually alcohols orethers. In some areas, state or local laws re-quire that the service pump be marked indi-cating use of alcohols or ethers. However, there are areas in which the pumps are un-marked. If you are not sure whether there isalcohol or ethers in the gasoline you buy, check with the service station operator. Tomeet seasonal air quality standards, someareas require the use of "oxygenated" fuel.MethanolDo not use gasolines containing methanol(methyl alcohol, wood alcohol). This practicecan result in vehicle performance deteriora-tion and can damage critical parts in the fuelsystem. Such damage may not be coveredunder the New Vehicle Limited Warranty.Volvo allows the use of the following "oxy-genated" fuels; however, the octane ratingslisted on page 10 must still be met.Alcohol – EthanolFuels containing up to 10% ethanol by vol-ume may be used. Ethanol may also be re-ferred to as Ethyl alcohol, or "Gasohol."Ethers – MTBEFuels containing up to 15% MTBE may beused.Engine oil02Oil specificationsOnly full synthetic oil meeting ACEA A5/B5 requirements should be used. Lower quality oils may not offer the same engine perfor-mance or engine protection. Volvo recommends Castrol.Oil additives must not be used .Oil viscosityIncorrect viscosity oil can shorten engine life under normal use. SAE 5W-30 will provide good fuel economy and engine protection. See the viscosity chart.Extreme engine operationSAE 0W-30 oil meeting ACEA A5/B5 require-ments is recommended for driving in areas with sustained low temperatures.Turbocharger Operating Tips02 In order to maximize the efficiency and oper-ation of your vehicle, the following pointsshould be observed:1.Oil change and filter replacement every10,000 miles/16,000 km, or at a time inter-val based on the type of driving andconditions as detailed in your Owner'sManual. You should maintain a record ofthese services (repair order receipts).2.Do not use engine oil additives asthey may adversely affect the engine. Before switching off the engine, let it operateat idle for a short time to allow the spinning ofthe turbocharger compressor's turbine vanesto slow. After hard driving, this idle timeshould last a couple of minutes, during whichthe vanes will slow and the compressor willcool down while still receiving oil lubrication. If the turbine vanes are spinning at highspeeds when the engine is switched off, there is a great risk of heat damage and/orturbine seizure due to lack of lubrication.Do not race the engine just prior toswitching off!Maintenance Service Operations02Service operation Schedule of servicesAll 2013 Modelsmiles x 1000102030405060708090100110120130140150km x 1000163248648096112128144160176192208224240 EngineEngine oil and filter, replace X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X Engine/Transmission/ Timing gear check for leaks1X X X X X X XService Reminder Indicator (SRI), reset X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X Fuel lines and fuel filter, check for leakage and damage X X XFuel filter, replace2XExhaust system/check for leakage, mounting X X X X X X X X X X Engine Air cleaner (ACL), clean the air cleaner housing/replacefilter3X X XSpark plugs/ replace X XCoolant level, check/adjust X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X Engine coolant check & adjust antifreeze rating & anti-corrosionagentX X X X X X XAlternator rubber sleeve, replace (XC90 engine code 95)4X Accessory drive belt, belt tensioner, idler puller & locating pincoupling between servo pump & coolant pump, replace.(Engine 95 - XC90.)5XAccessory drive belt, tensioner and idler puller, replace.(Engines 90/94/95 - S60,XC60,XC70 and S80)5X1In the event of a leak from the transmission, check the oil level.2XC90 engine VIN code 95 only.3May be necessary to change more frequently when driving in dusty/dirty areas.4Replace at 150,000 miles/240,000 kilometers or 15 years, whichever occurs first.5Replace at 150,000 miles/240,000 kilometers or 10 years whichever occurs first.Maintenance Service Operations02Service operation Schedule of serviceAll 2013 Modelsmiles x 1000102030405060708090100110120130140150km x 1000163248648096112128144160176192208224240Steering, Front and Rear Suspension Power steering fluid level, check/adjust 1XXXXXX X X X X X X X X X Steering/front suspension, check for wear according to: Wheel angles checkX X X X X X X X X X Rear suspension, check for wear according to: Wheel angles checkXXXXX XXXXX Transmission, Driveshaft and DifferentialAutomatic transmission fluid level, check/adjust 2XX XFinal drive/bevel gear, visual inspection (AWD models only)3XXX X X X X Driveshaft joints, check for wear/play X X X X X Driveshafts, check rubber bootsX X X X X X X X X X Propeller shaft, pilot bearing and universal joints, check wear (AWD models only)X X X X X X X X X X Clutch fluid check & adjust (manual transmission only)X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X Controls and LightingWasher fluid level, check/adjustX X X X X X X X X X X X X X X Check all wiper blades and washers for headlights and windshields for function and signs of wearXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX1No power steering fluid check on C30 and C70 models.2Check automatic transmission fluid level only if an external leak is identified.
This manual deals with the operation and care of your VIN information on page 62. You should also be familiar with the information in the first three chapters of this manual.Information contained in the balance of the manual is extremely useful and should be read after operating the vehicle for the first time. The manual is structured so that it can be used for reference. For this reason, it should be kept in the car for ready access.Do not export your Volvo to another country before investigating that country's applicable safety and exhaust emission requirements. In some cases it may be difficult or impossible to comply with these requirements. Modifications to the emission control system(s) may render your Volvo not certifiable for legal operation in the U.S., Canada and other countries. All information, illustrations and specifications contained in this manual are based on the latest product information available at the time of publication. Please note that some vehicles may be equipped differently, depending on special legal requirments and that optional equipment described in this manual may not be available in all markets.Volvo reserves the right to make model changes at any time, or to change specifications or design, without notice and without incurring obligation.Volvo and the environmentV olvo is committed to the well being of our customers. As a natural part of this commitment, we care about the environment in which we all live. Caring for the environment means an everyday involvement in reducing our environmental impact.V olvo's environmental activities are based on a holistic view, which means we consider the overall environmental impact of a product throughout its complete life cycle. In this context, design, production, product use, and recycling are all important considerations. In production, V olvo has partly or completely phased out several chemicals including freons, lead chromates, naphtanates, asbestos, mercury and cadmium; and reduced the amount of chemicals used in our plants 50% since 1991.In use, V olvo was the first in the world to introduce into production a threeway catalytic converter with a Lambda sond, now called oxygen sensor, in 1976. The current version of this highly efficient system reduces emissions of harmful substances (CO, HC, NOx) from the exhaust pipe by approximately 95% and the search to eliminate the remaining emissions continues. V olvo is the only automobile manufacturer to offer CFCfree retrofit kits for the air conditioning system for all models as far back as the M/Y 1975 240. Advanced electronic engine controls, refined purification systems and cleaner fuels are bringing us closer to our goal.CALL FAQ。
