The English Elective 4 textbook provides a comprehensive guide to developing advanced English language proficiency, with a focus on the unique challenges and opportunities presented in Chapter 3.One of the key objectives of this chapter is to explore the nuances of effective written communication in English. Strong writing skills are essential for success in academic, professional, and personal contexts, as the written word often serves as the primary mode of expression and information exchange. The chapter delves into the fundamental elements of well-crafted essays, including the importance of clear organization, coherent argumentation, and precise language usage.Throughout the chapter, students are encouraged to analyze sample essays and identify the strategies employed by skilled writers. By dissecting the structure, content, and stylistic choices of exemplarypieces, learners gain a deeper understanding of what constitutes effective written expression in English. This analytical approach enables students to cultivate their own writing abilities, as they learn to emulate the techniques and approaches used by accomplished authors. In addition to the analysis of model essays, the chapter also emphasizes the importance of the writing process itself. Effective writing is not a single, linear endeavor, but rather a dynamic and iterative process that involves brainstorming, outlining, drafting, revising, and editing. The textbook guides students through each stage of this process, providing practical strategies and exercises to help them develop their writing skills step by step. One of the key components of the writing process highlighted in the chapter is the importance of organization and structure. Well-structured essays not only convey ideas clearly and coherently but also demonstrate the writer's analytical and critical thinking abilities. The textbook delves into the various organizational patterns and rhetorical structures that can be employed in essay writing, such as the traditional five-paragraph format, the problem-solution structure, and the compare-and-contrast approach. Moreover, the chapter emphasizes the significance of audience awareness in the writing process. Effective writers must consider theneeds, expectations, and perspectives of their intended readers, and tailor their language and content accordingly. This involves making strategic choices regarding tone, word choice, and the level of detail and explanation provided.Another crucial aspect of the chapter is the focus on developing a strong, persuasive argument. Argumentation is a fundamental skill in academic and professional writing, as it involves the ability to present a clear thesis, support it with relevant evidence and reasoning, and anticipate and address counterarguments. The textbook provides guidance on crafting compelling arguments, including techniques for generating and organizing ideas, as well as strategies for effectively incorporating research and citations.Throughout the chapter, students are also encouraged to explore the role of language in shaping meaning and conveying nuance. The textbook delves into the complexities of English grammar, vocabulary, and syntax, and how these linguistic elements can be leveraged to enhance the clarity, precision, and expressiveness of written communication. Students are challenged to experiment with different stylistic choices and to develop a keen awareness of how language can be used to achieve specific rhetorical goals. In addition to the emphasis on writing skills, the chapter also addresses the importance of critical reading and analysis in thecontext of essay writing. Effective writers must be able to engage with and interpret a wide range of source materials, from scholarly articles to literary works. The textbook provides guidance on strategies for close reading, evaluating the credibility and relevance of sources, and incorporating research into one's own writing in a thoughtful and substantive manner.Throughout the chapter, students are provided with ample opportunities to apply the concepts and strategies they have learned through a variety of writing exercises and assignments. These activities range from short, focused tasks to more extensive essay-writing projects, allowing learners to practice and refine their skills in a supportive and structured environment.By the end of Chapter 3, students should have a comprehensive understanding of the key principles and techniques of effective essay writing in English. Late submission of fieldwork reports will result in adeduction of 10% of the maximum mark per calendar day. Soft copies of assignments mustalso be submitted via the subject eLearning.Sydney Business School: Arrangements will be made with the lecturers. To submit group report through the EEC, you will need to generate a cover sheet on the web andattach this to your assignment. Hand in the assignment to EEC and the staff will barcode scan your assignment cover sheet. You will then receive a receipt by email. When your assignment has beenmarked, you will also be emailed that it is ready to be picked up from EEC. On collecting your assignment, EEC will barcode scan your student ID card.To generate the cover sheet, go to: http://130.130.8.10/fmi/iwp/res/iwp_auth.htmlLogin: studentPassword: coveritIf you are required to work as a group and are to submit a group assignment or report, nominate ateam leader to take the responsibility of generating the cover sheet, handing in the assignment andcollecting it back from EEC. Only the team leader will be able to collect the assignment. The teamleader should select the <Group Cover> option and ensure that the other team member’s names areentered in the appropriate field.Attendance RequirementsThe University Code of Practice Students states that it is the responsibility of students to attend alllectures, tutorials, seminars and practical work as stipulated in the subject outline. Attendance atfieldwork exercises is compulsory.University and Faculty PoliciesStudents should make themselves aware of the University and/or Faculty Policies regarding plagiarism, special consideration, supplementary examinations and other educational issues andstudent matters.
