Irony, ironic statements, is statements that imply a meaning in opposition to their literal meaning.. Pride and Prejudice, for instance, is steeped in irony. So many things in this novel kind of contrast, either in style or in context, even both, such as the behaviors of MR.Bennet and her daughters, the marriges based on wealth, proposal of arrogance ,trifling w ith marriage and so on…
One example to be specific, the opening sentence states that "'a single man in possesion of a good fortune, must be in want of a w ife" and claims that "it is truth universally
acknow ledged."
What’s more,w hen MR.collins proposes Elizabeth,w hat Mr.Collins says seemed humble but actually proud. On the contrast,Elizabeth refuses politely but ironically.
Mrs Bennet's concern for getting her daughters gainfully husbanded constitutes the basic theme of Pride and Prejudice. This novel mainly focuses on the story of Elizabeth and Darcy.Because of different social classed,Darcy are arrogant to Elizabeth, which prejudices Elizabeth. Also this ironizes the snobbishness and marriages without basis of true love. As the story goes, the pride and prejudice of Darcy and Elizabeth fade away. The happy ending of they two is also a contrast with the
tragical marriages in this novel .
