High energy savings, low lifetime costsAlfa Laval spiral designs provide thermal efficiency 2-3 times that of comparable shell-and-tube heat exchangers. They can therefore recover much more waste heat, creating huge potential for increased energy savings. Lower fuel costs combined with reduced emissions offer a smart way to improve the sustainability of your processes and your profitability. At the same time, a compact design reduces installation and materials costs, while simplified service shrinks your annual maintenance budget. This is why you can expect a short payback time as well as low total cost of ownership. SpiralPro will never foul upFor processes involving fouling fluids, sludges, emulsions, slurries, fibres orparticle loaded liquids, nothing beatsthe reliability of Alfa Laval SpiralProheat exchangers. The SelfClean™design resists fouling and clogging withdirty media that cause problems forany other type of heat exchanger.Maximum uptime and easy cleanabilitydramatically reduces operationalexpenses and simultaneously boostsproduction capacity.SpiralPro heat exchangers can beconfigured for liquid-to-liquid duties oras steam heaters.SpiralCond: the ideal solution forvacuum condensingSpiralCond heat exchangers are a highlyefficient solution for two-phase duties, with a compact, vertical configurationthat offers a much smaller footprint thanequivalent shell-and-tube heat exchang-ers. Each SpiralCond is fully customizedto the required duty, with channelspacings adjusted to provide the lowestpressure drop. They are therefore ideallysuited to challenging vacuum condens-ing and evaporation duties.SpiralCond heat exchangers can beinstalled onto existing process columnsor delivered as a stacked column forapplications involving multiple coolingmedia.Improving sustainability with spiral heat exchangersAlfa Laval’s range of welded spiral heat exchangers offer a robust andreliable option for demanding liquid-to-liquid and two-phase duties, with surprisingly low maintenance requirements. Our extensive experience in welded heat transfer technology means that our SpiralPro and SpiralCond models offer benefits that you simply cannot find on other types of heat exchangers:For more product information, visit /spiralsUnique featuresCompared to other heat exchangers used in similar applications, Alfa Laval spiral designs offer a more compact footprint withincreased thermal efficiency. They are also built with unique features that ensure the most reliable performance:Relevant industries for Alfa Laval spiral heat exchangers include:• Petrochemical • Refinery •Steel making • Pulp and paper• Mineral processing (metals, ore) •Wastewater treatment (municipal and industrial) •Pharmaceutical • Vegetable oil refining •Natural gas processingSelfClean™Superior cleaning and extended performanceA single channel for each fluid ensures reliable self-cleaning of the unit.RollWeld™Automated, reliable channel enclosureAn automated bending and welding process for the closure of each channel ensures consistent quality and reliability.HighP™A custom solution for high-pressure dutiesCircular shell design and a self-support-ing internal coil improves mechanical strength under high pressure.ALOnsite™Qualified support at your facilityTrue onsite service by skilled engineers, anywhere in the world.Fouling is a thing of the pastThe SelfClean™ design makes Alfa Laval SpiralPro heat exchangers the ultimate problem solvers for use with media that foul or clog other types of heat exchangers. The continuously curving, single-channel geometry creates high turbulence to minimize fouling from the start. If fouling does start to occur, local velocity increases, since the entire flow must still pass through the channel. This creates a scrubbing effect that flushes away any accumulations of deposits as they form.Eliminates dead spotsThe single-channel geometry offers other important benefits as well. The fluid is fully turbulent at a much lower velocity than in straight tube heat exchangers, and each fluid travels at constant velocity throughout the whole unit. This eliminates the risk of dead spots and stagnation for more efficient heat transfer.Improved waste heat recovery Another secret behind the spiral is the true counter current flow, which enables crossing temperature situations where the cold fluid can be heated totemperatures very close to those of the hot fluid. This effect is further enhancedby the high turbulence in the unit. The ultimate solution for ultimate uptimeAlfa Laval spiral heat exchangers are based on our ingeniousSelfClean™ design. A single channel for each media provides optimal heat transfer and flow conditions for a wide variety of fluids – including extremely dirty process media – while ensuring maximum uptime within a reduced footprint.ChallengeDue to incredibly frequent cleaning needs from fouling, the facility required two shell-and-tubes in alternatingoperation in the PVC slurry interchanger position.SolutionMexichem ordered two compact SpiralPro models with high thermal efficiency to replace the existingshell-and-tubes. After seeing the results of reduced fouling and increased performance, Mexichem quickly followed up with six additional units.ResultAnnual steam savings: €110,000ChallengeBecause the media containedsuspended solids, the product sides of the exchangers quickly clogged after a short time in operation. Cleaning, which was needed every ten days, required 3-4 days of downtime.SolutionThe MIDER refinery replaced the tubular units with two Alfa Laval SpiralPro heat exchangers. The SelfClean™ design prevented fouling with the suspended solids, meaning the units could run for over three years without cleaning.ResultCapital payback time:Less than one year, thanks to reduced service costsFrequent cleaning a thing of the pastThe ultimate solution to fouling problemsMexichem, a global leader in plastic piping systems and in the chemical/petrochemical industries, needed to increase its production capacity to meet market demands.Leuna Germany’s MIDER refinery, owned by Total S.A., originally installed two tubular heat exchangers for cooling bottoms product in their fluid catalytic cracking unit.Alfa Laval – welded spiral heat exchangers 7You talk, we listenAt Alfa Laval, development is based on our close collaboration with customers. The steady state can be selected manually using the analysis cursors or calculated automatically. The new file that is created as a result of the analysis can be treated like any creep file for analysis and graphing.Saving Images as JPEG or BMPTo avoid compression issues images can now be additionally saved as bitmaps. This increases the file size therefore, it should only be used if a lossless format is required for post analysis. The selection is made on the camera setup screen.Batch Export of All Images in a FileTo avoid cutting and pasting individual images, it is now possible to export all images from a file as either JPEG or BMP. If the images were originally saved as JPEG, exporting to BMP will not recover any information lost during the compression process. See the figures below.New Features in Rheology Advantage v5.4New FeaturesInstrument ControlThe following items are included in this release of the Rheology Advantage instrument control program:•Support for the AR2000ex rheometer had been added.•Support for Electrically Heated plates (EHP) has been added (AR-G2 and AR2000ex only).•Support for Upper Temperature Sensor (UTS) has been added (AR-G2 only).•Minimum limit for the temperature ramp rate has been changed to 0.01ºC/min.•You now have the ability to save the results of a service bearing test to a file that can be loaded into Data Analysis.•ETC camera viewer driver has been updated for USB2 video adapter.•Fill and drain icons are reactivated on status page when asphalt is selected under instrument settings for AR1000.•Data Analysis•The following items are included in this release of the Rheology Advantage data analysis program:•The number of digits has been extended for torque and oscillatory (5 significant figures).•File date/time has been added as an optional key for graph view.•Fixed incorrect reporting of the step termination value.•Fixed missing axis after a straight line fit on certain data files.•Smoothing of graph while using logarithmic scales on x and/or y-axis no longer causes shifts of graph data.•The default path for file printing of results is now set to My Documents folder.•The results file time in Custom Reports, previously reported in GMT, is now reported in local time.NavigatorThe following items are included in this release of the Navigator program:•For Ethernet systems, Navigator is run by right clicking on the instrument icon in TAIE and selecting•Connect to the instrument using Navigator as seen in the figure below.•Set File Name has been added to list of functions.•Asphalt scripts have been modified for multi-stress repeated creep.Version 5.3 of the Rheology Advantage software has been updated with additional support for the AR-G2 instrument and assorted improvements. These changes are not readily visible to the person using the software as they function during the running of the software and are not seen as new features.Refer to Rheology Advantage 5.2 release notes for the most recent enhancements to the software.New FeaturesSupport for the AR-G2 RheometerCommunication Using Serial [RS232] or Ethernet [TCP/IP]The TA Instruments AR-G2 Rheometer can take advantage of Ethernet communications over your local area network [LAN]. In this scenario the rheometer control electronics and PC are plugged into separate sockets, and TA Instrument Explorer [TAIE] is used to launch the instrument control software. There are two views (shown below) that can be used to open the instrument control program and access an instrument. To stop unauthorized access to your rheometer you can configure your rheometer with a password so that a login is required.Full details on setting up Ethernet communications and login passwords are given in the Installation Instructions 925911.000.New Front Panel for AR-G2The AR-G2 instrument has additional buttons on the front panel of the rheometer, as shown in the figure below.Fast Sampling Data StreamsWhen using Ethernet communications, there is now only a 15-second lag to allow the computer to catch up with fast sampling in creep, stress relaxation, and peak hold. This allows for shorter step times.Fast Zero Gap RoutineWhen the Geometry Smart Swap is enabled, positioning the head within 5 mm is not required after the first time a zero gap is performed. This applies to each Smart Swap geometry/Smart Swap temperature system combination. The instrument stores up to 100 combinations.Zero Gap Routine OptimizedThe zero gap routine has been optimized for the AR-G2 rheometer. It uses sensors in the magnetic bearing rather than deceleration or normal force modes. Those two modes, which are available on other AR rheometers, are not available on the G2.Braking Option AddedA negative torque pulse, calculated from the moment of inertia and the angular velocity at the end of the previous step, is applied in the first few milliseconds of a creep procedure recovery step [stress ortorque=0]. This removes a significant error from the recovery data for weakly elastic and near Newtonian materials. See the figure below for the associated page in the software.AR-G2 Bearing ModeThe stiffness of the magnetic thrust bearing in the AR-G2 can be adjusted to better suit an application. This is not the case with the air bearing. In most cases, the default Stiff mode is used with the AR-G2, but it has been shown that measurements on low viscosity materials can be improved by selecting the Soft mode. The current bearing mode is shown on the instrument status page, and is set by selecting Instrument/Set bearing mode from the main menu.Integer Rotation AveragingIt has been shown that low torque data can be improved by averaging the torque over complete rotations of the motor/bearing. To make it easy to perform this type of averaging an option has been added to the Advanced tab for Stepped Flow tests. This is called Integer rotation averaging. When selected for each step, the rheometer will average data over as many complete rotations that can be made in the programmed point time.If the point time does not allow for a complete rotation, the test will continue until the criteria of a complete rotation is met. You need to apply common sense when using this mode, particularly in a stress controlled test as there is no way of knowing how long the test will take as seen in the message displayed in the window shown to the right. If you step from high to low, you can collect data and then abort the test once your patience threshold has been exceeded. In controlled speed mode, the rheometer is able to calculate the length of the test so you can judge if this is acceptable before starting.Smart Swap GeometriesSmart Swap™ geometries are an extension of the Smart Swap technology previously used by AR2000 temperature systems. These geometries can be automatically identified when installed on the rheometer. The geometry serial number is encoded in a magnetic strip on the head of each geometry. When the geometry is set up for the first time a link is established between this serial number and a geometry file in the instrument control software. The geometry then becomes “Smart”.When a Smart Swap Geometry is attached to the rheometer, a sensor registers the attachment and slowly spins the shaft to read the serial number from the magnetic strip. The software then loads the geometry file associated with this serial number as shown in the figures below. It may become necessary to disable the Smart Swap feature - for example you may want to temporarily use a geometry that, for some reason, cannot be read. Unchecking Smart swap enable on the Geometry menu will accomplish this. For more information, refer to the chapter on Smart Swap Geometries in the AR-G2 Operator's Manual. Image CaptureThe AR-G2 has the ability to allow you to view steaming video from the ETC Viewer or a compatible web cam within the instrument control software. Once the appropriate driver has been installed, the camera icon in the main tool bar (shown in the figure below) toggles this option. The following are highlights of the ETC Viewer and image capture software capabilities. For detailed information, please refer to the AR-G2 Operator's Manual.•An image can be captured (with certain limitations) for every saved data point. This is activated on the Options/Experiment tabs for each procedure type.•The streaming video (live image) for the ETC viewer has lighting and focus controls.•Right clicking on the image allows access to the image set-up, where you can select from the available cameras, adjust size preferences, etc•If images have been stored with the data file, the individual point images can be viewed in the data analysis software by checking the point image under Options/Settings. The image for the current point (marked with '*' on the graph or highlighted in the table view) is shown in a dockable window.•The stored images can be played back in sequence by selecting Show image sequence from the pop-up menu.Support for TA UpdateTA Update will be available for all software packages supplied by TA Instruments. If your computer is connected to the Internet with a TA Update-ready version of Advantage or Orchestrator, you will be able to configure your system to automatically check for updates to software and firmware. This will allow you to keep up to date with new features and bug fixes. RA5.2 is the first version of Rheology Advantage that supports TA Update. OverviewThe ATMX150RHA Design Manual, available from your Microchip technical center, provides the information andflows necessary to design a mixed-signal ASIC for space applications. Users can be trained on Microchip-specific or standard commercial tool kits and methodological details for actual implementations. This offering is CMOS-technology-based, specified with 5/3.3/2.5V and HV 25-45V ranges for the periphery. Core is supplied at 1.8V.ATMX150RHA is manufactured on a 150nm, five-metal-layers SOI CMOS with Thick Metal technology option -AT77KRHA, a Microchip proprietary process. The digital ATMX150RHA is qualified under the QML-V, QML-Q, and ESCC QML. The domain of qualification covers the main features as follows.•Comprehensive library of standard logic and I/O cells•Memory Cells Compiled (ROM, SRAM, DPRAM, and Register File Memory)•450 MHz PLL (PLL400MRHA)•Up to 22 usable Mgates (equivalent NAND2)•Operating voltage 1.8±0.15V for the core and 5V±0.5V, 3.3±0.3V, 2.5±0.2V for the periphery•High-speed LVDS buffers 655 Mbps in compliance with the TIA/EIA-644-A standard•PCI buffers•Set of analog blocks•No single event latch-up below an LET threshold of 78 MeV.cm2/mg at 125°C•SEU-hardened flip-flops•TID test up to 150 krads (Si) for 1.8V and 3.3V devices, and 90 krads (Si) for 5V according to MIL-STD 883 TM1019•CCGA, CLGA, and CQFP qualified package catalog2. Periphery2.1 Buffer DescriptionsThe peripheral I/O buffer is the electrical interface between the external signals (voltage range from 2.3V to 3.6V and from 4.5V to 5.5V) and the internal core signals (from 1.65V to 1.95V).I/O libraries are:•IO5V0 I/O – Powered at 5V•IO3V3 I/O – Powered at 3.3V•IO2V5 I/O – Powered at 2.5V, 3.3V tolerantAll I/O buffers are cold sparing and include:•Bidirectional I/O buffers•Tristate-output I/O buffers•Output-only I/O buffers•Input-only I/O buffers (inverting, non-inverting, Schmitt trigger)Furthermore, the bidirectional, tristate-output and input-only I/O buffers are available with or without pull-up orpull-down structures.Specific I/O buffers have been developed in 3.3V and 2.5V:•LVDS transmitter and receiver differential I/O buffers.•LVPECL receiver differential I/O buffers•In 3.3V, PCI-compliant output bufferI/O buffers are tolerant, that is, the pad signal can be higher than VCCB when it is high impedance (input orbidirectional buffers, tristate buffers in HiZ and LVDS when disable).I/O buffers are cold sparing, that is, the pad signal can be applied when VCCB is 0V. In both cases, tolerant orcold sparing, there is no impact on core supply, buffer supply, and reliability, if the applied signal respects therecommended operating conditions, and the leakage current is less than 1µA.2.2 I/O ClustersThe periphery of the chip (pad ring) can be split into several I/O segments (I/O clusters). Some clusters can beunpowered while others are active.A specific power control line is distributed inside the cluster to force all the I/Os of the cluster in tristate moderegardless of their initial state (i.e., an output-only buffer will also be turned to HiZ mode).2.3 Double Pad RingIn case of a large number of IOs, Microchip can provide a double pad ring configuration, where the inner ring is used exclusively for core power supply pads.3. Core3.1 Standard Cell LibraryThe Microchip Standard Cell Library contains a comprehensive set of logic and storage cells, including cells thatbelong to the following categories:•Buffers and gates•Standard and SEU-hardened flip-flops•Standard and SEU-hardened scan flip-flops•Latches•Multiplexers, adders, subtractors3.2 Memory Hard BlocksThe ATMX150RHA memory libraries are developed from Virage memory compilers. All these memories aresynchronous. Four types of memories can be generated on request:•Single-port synchronous SRAM•Dual-port memory with two-port read/write synchronous SRAM•Two-port synchronous register file with one read port and one write port•ROM with metal programmingFor maximum block sizes, refer to ATMX150RHA Design Manual, available from your Microchip technical center.3.3 Analog BlocksMICROCHIP proposes a catalog of analog IPs qualified that can be delivered with a datasheet and qualpack. The qualification includes:•Electrical characterization•TID and SEE characterization•HTOL testsThe analog IPs consist of Voltage regulators, a voltage reference and monitoring device, clock synthesizer and signal conditioning IPs.For more information on a complete list of available analog blocks, please contact the Microchip technical supportteam in your region. The following table lists the preliminary IP blocks and their features.Table 3-1. Analog Blocks CatalogA Physical Design Kit (PDK), with a full set of basic devices, is also available to design custom analog blocks.3.4 Array OrganizationWith the ATMX150RHA, the die size and the package are optimized for each mixed-signal ASIC.However, for some digital designs, predefined matrix sizes and pad frames are available to ease the assembly of each individual ASIC design by using available package cavity sizes and layouts.Table 3-2. Standard Array Dimensions(*) Based on NAND2 equivalent at 50% density, without memoriesAdvanced Packaging 4. Advanced PackagingMicrochip proposes advanced multilayer low-noise CQFP and CCGA packages with isolated power and groundplanes.CQFP packages are available with up to 352 leads and CLGA/CCGA packages with up to 896 lands/columns. Inaddition to the packages listed in the following table, Microchip offers custom package development.Table 4-1. PackagesSpace Multi-Project Wafer (SMPW) 5. Space Multi-Project Wafer (SMPW)Microchip offers a Space Multi-Project Wafer (SMPW) service, in order to decrease the cost of reticles and siliconby sharing them over several designs. Specific milestones have been created to coordinate the activities and ensure that there will be no interaction between customer designs.Any questions related to the SMPW service can be addressed to your Microchip technical center.Testability Techniques 6. Testability TechniquesFor complex designs involving blocks of memory and/or cores, careful attention must be given to design-for-testtechniques. The chip size of complex designs, and the number of functional vectors that would need to be createdto exercise them fully, strongly suggests the use of more efficient techniques. Combinations of SCAN technique, multiplexed access to memory and/or core blocks, and built-in-self-test logic must be employed, in addition tofunctional test patterns, to provide both the user and Microchip the ability to test the finished product. Test at speedand transition delay fault patterns are also needed to achieve a good sorting of the dies. For further information, refer to the ATMX150RHA TOS Manual, available from your Microchip technical center.Radiation Hardness 7. Radiation HardnessThe ATMX150RHA standard cell library encompasses all the specific functions and buffers necessary for spacedesigns, such as LVDS transmitters and receivers, PCI buffers, SEU-hardened DFFs and cold sparing buffers. Keyradiation-tolerance parameters are controlled and monitored. Reports are available upon request from your Microchip technical center.Table 7-1. Radiation HardnessNotes: 1.Co-60 testing, in compliance with Mil-Std 883 TM 1019.5: Tested at 25°C, with a total dose rate of 300 rad/hand a total dose up to 150 krads (Si) or 90 krads (Si).2.Based on worst-case orbit condition (between GEO, ISS LEO, LEO POL, and MEO), at 1.65V for core and25°C.3.In worst-case conditions: 1.95V for core, 3.6V or 5.5V for I/Os at 125°C8.
