The story sounds like just a dog tale at first--a dog, Buck, is kidnapped from his comfortable life in California and sold as a sled dog for the Alaskan gold rush. While he endures the wilderness and the other dogs, Buck learns that survival comes only with tooth and fang. This lesson brings him very close to his forbears, the wolves. If you look deeper, Call of the Wild is as much a story of humans as it is a dog tale. Buck encounters various incompetent masters who try to break his spirit. Are we like this? But Buck also learns to trust a master who is gentle and gives love. We can be like this, too.Call of the Wild is not a story for the squeamish or very young. By involving us in the characters' lives, Jack London tells the truth. It is a life-and-death war between the harsh land and the soul every day. There is blood, death, cruelty--but it's the truth.《野性的呼唤》英语读后感At the beginning of this century, many new writers emerged with the introduction of many new ideas. Among them, Jack London was the most popular one.His most famous novel is the call of the wild . Although it is a story about a dog, Buck, it vividly depicts the life in the primitive North where people rushed for gold and fortune.Buck, used to belong to a judge, was kidnapped and sold toNorth. Then he became a member of a dog-team pulling a sled . In the days of pulling a snow-sled, he learned to conform to the law of nature and obey the master. Finally, he found a basic instinct hidden inside him, which enabled himself to survive the tough environment. This is the call of the wild. When you read the story, you will feel that Buck is a man instead of a dog, struggling with his fortune and conforming to the law of nature.Though short, it is really a thrilling story. What you never forget is the tough life in the nature, the brave and crafty dog. Maybe the wild is calling you to go ahead. While writing for only 16 years throughout his life, London produced an amazing body of work among which, White Fang, Martin Eden, the Valley of the Moon are representative.

The Call of the Wild: A Reflection。
The Call of the Wild is a novel written by Jack London, first published in 1903. It tells the story of a dog named Buck who is taken from his comfortable home in California and sold as a sled dog in the harsh and unforgiving Yukon territory during the Klondike Gold Rush. The novel explores themes of survival, instinct, and the struggle for mastery in the wild. The protagonist of the novel, Buck, undergoes a transformation from a domesticated pet to a wild and primal creature. He learns to rely on his instincts and primal nature to survive in the harsh and brutal environment of the Yukon. This transformation is a central theme of the novel, as it highlights the idea that the call of the wild is innate in all living creatures, and cannot be suppressed or ignored. The novel also explores the relationship between humans and animals, and the impact of civilization on the natural world. Buck's journey from a pampered pet to a fierce and independent creature reflects the idea that the natural world is a powerful force that cannot be tamed orcontrolled by human beings. This theme is particularly relevant in today's world, as we continue to grapple with issues of environmental destruction and the impact of human activity on the natural world. The Call of the Wild also delves into the concept of survival of the fittest, as Buck learns to navigate the harsh and unforgiving environment of the Yukon. He faces numerous challenges and obstacles, but ultimately learns to rely on his instincts and primal nature to overcome them. This theme serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience and strength of the natural world, and the importance of adapting to changing circumstances in order to survive. In addition to its exploration of themes such as survival and instinct, The Call of the Wild also offers a powerful commentary on the human condition. Buck's journeyfrom domestication to wildness serves as a metaphor for the human experience, and the novel raises important questions about the nature of humanity and our relationship to the natural world. It challenges readers to reflect on their own instincts and primal nature, and to consider the impact of civilization on the natural world.Overall, The Call of the Wild is a powerful andthought-provoking novel that continues to resonate with readers today. Its exploration of themes such as survival, instinct, and the impact of civilization on the natural world offers valuable insights into the human experience and the resilience of the natural world. As we continue to grapple with issues of environmental destruction and the impact of human activity on the natural world, the novel serves as a timely reminder of the power and importance of the call of the wild.。
The Call of the WildI About Jack LondonJack London (born Jan. 12, 1876, died Nov. 22, 1916) was born in San Francisco and became the most successful writer in America in the early 20th century. He was de ser ted by his father, "Professor" William Henry Chaney, an itinerant astrologer and raised in Oakland by his mother Flora Wellman, a music teacher and spiritualist. His stepfather John London, whose surname he took, was a failed storekeeper. London's youth was marked by poverty. He is an illegitimate child, he passed his childhood in poverty in the Oakland slums. At the age of 17, he ventured to sea on a sealing ship. The turning point of his life was a thirty-day imprisonment that was so degrading it made him decide to turn to education and pursue a career in writing. He is best known for his books and a few short stories. He experimented with many literary forms, from conventional love stories and dystopias to science fantasy. His noted journalism included war correspondence, boxing stories, and the life of Molokai lepers. A committed socialist, he insisted against editorial pressures to write political essays and insert social criticism in his fiction. He was among the most influential figures of his day, who understood how to create a public person and use the media to market his self-created image of poor-boy-turned-success. London's great passion was agriculture, and he was well on the way of creating a new model for ranching through his Beauty Ranch when he died of kidney disease at age 40. He left over fifty books of novels, stories, journalism, and essays, many of which have been translated and continue to be read around the world.II about the call of the wildIn thisThis story describe a dog Buck, who leads a comfortable life in a California ranch home with his owner, a judge, until he is stolen and sold to pay off a gambling debt. Buck is taken to Alaska and sold to a pair of French Canadians who were impressed with his physique. They train him as a sled dog, and he quickly learns how to survive the cold winter nights and the pack society by observing his teammates. Buck is later sold again and passes hands several times, all the while improving his abilities as a sled dog and pack leader.Eventually, Buck is sold to a man named Hal, his wife, and her brother who know nothing about sledding nor surviving in the Alaskan wilderness. They struggle to control the sled and ignore warnings not to travel during the spring melt. As they journey on, they run into John Thornton, an experienced outdoors man, who notices that all of the sled dogs are in terrible shape from the ill treatment of their handlers.Thornton warns the trio against crossing the river, but they refuse to listen and order Buck to mush. Exhausted, starving, and sensing the danger ahead, Buck refuses. Recognizing him as a remarkable dog and disgusted by the driver's beating of the dog, Thornton cuts him free from his traces and tells the trio he's keeping him. After some argument, the trio leaves and tries to cross the river, but as Thornton warned the ice gives way and they drown. As Thornton nurses Buck back to health, Buck comes to love him and grows devoted to him. Thornton takes him on trips to pan for gold. During one such trip, a man makes a wager with Thornton over Buck's strength and devotion. Buck wins the bet by breaking a half-ton sled out of the frozen ground, then pulling it 100 yards by himself. Thornton and his friends return to their camp and continue their search for gold, while Buck begins exploring the wilderness around them and begins socializing with a local wolf pack. One morning, he returns from a three-day long hunt to find his beloved master and the others in the camp have been killed by some Native Americans. Buck finds some of them in the camp and kills them to avenge Thornton, later finding other members of the tribe, then returns to the woods to become alpha wolf of the pack. Each year he revisits the site where Thornton died, never completely forgetting the master he loved.III about characteristics of BuckThe protagonist of our story, Buck is part St. Bernard, part Scotch shepherd. Buck's characteristic was changing throughout his way of returning wild. At the beginning of the story, Buck is a domesticated, but atypical dog who lives in the home of Judge Miller in California. He was gentle and sluggish before he had been sold. After being kidnapped and taken to Alaska to become a sled-dog, Buck's wild nature is reawakened, he learned to become cunning, crafty and resolute. He fell in love with John Thorton who saved his life several times. However, a sort of violent desire which was attracted by the wild urged him to return to deep forests more and more frequently and he slowly returns to the ways of his ancestors.III My Opinions on the call of the wildThe dogs in the book are all loyal to their masters. For example, a man makes a wager with Thornton over Buck's strength and devotion. Buck wins the bet by breaking a half-ton sled out of the frozen ground, then pulling it 100 yards by himself. In addition, all dogs have sense of honor. They are all proud of being sled dogs, and devote themselves to the work. For example, Dave, who is going to die, still insists on working. “Sick as he was, Dave resented being taken out, grunting and growlingwhile the traces were unfastened and whimpering when he saw Sol-leks (another dog) in the position he had held and served so long. For the pride of trace and trail was his, and, sick to death, he could not bear that another dog should do his work.”Both loyalty and honor are based on love which is what touches me deeply. Because of love to Thornton, Buck does such thing that seems impossible to accomplish. Because of sense of honor, Dave insists on working till he dies.As we know, Buck answers the call of and returns to the wild finally. In my opinion, the call is not from the wild though Buck often hears the howl of the wolves. Instead, it is from the bottom of Buck’s heart. The call is the will or the instinct which makes him want to be himself: A wolf.I think every one of us has a call in our hearts. The call is our dream, goal or something we really want to do. However, under the pressure of society, we often have to give up our dreams or goals, and do things we are unwilling to do. So we should learn something from Buck: Just follow the call, and be yourself!。

The Call Of The Wild A dog’s legend , Jack London’s most famous novel, was published in 1903.It tells us a story about a dog named Buck who is stolen from a rich and very comfortable home and has to struggle for survival.Buck is a very strong dog. After he is stolen, he also be sold many times and eventually he starts his gold-rush-trip as an Alaskan sled dog and enters the very wasteland which is far away from human civilization. But he amazingly adapts to the life which is of much challenges and he loves there very much.During the time he adjusts himself to the cruel world he is aware of the principle about survival of the fittest and the tenet of the nature and justice. The terrible living environment makes him to learn not only to be cunning but also hypocritical. He knows that only in doing so can he survive from the fierce competition. And more often than not he can thoroughly make full use of his ability that he learned. After conquers every contention with other dogs, he certainly becomes the leader of the dogs.During the hardly way of sled, the master changes several times and Buck encounters John Thornton, one of his masters, and finally Buck and John Thornton becomes very good friends. The master John pulls him out of awful donkey works and gives him comfort. He also saves John’s life more than one time as repaying an obligation. At last, John Thornton, the master of Buck and the one Buck deeply loves is killed by Indians.Buck is very grievous and he revenges his dead master. Then he enters the wild and responses to the mysterious call of the wild which he yearns for a long time.At last, he becomes a veritable wolf, and of course the leader of thewolves.John Thornton is not only a dog-lover but also a brave and venturous man.He is so straightforward and simple that makes him an accommodating man.Once he firmly roots a goal into his heart, it seems that nothing could prevent him from accomplishing it except death.I do not know whether the persistence is the most vital element to make a man successful, but what I know is that you are not far away from success once you occupy it.Although Buck is a dog, but his tough way of life and his attitude to the life can absolutely reflect the real world of the author’s age. What’s more, the connotation the story wants to tell us is the inevitable result of the development of capitalism. It teaches us if we want to survive we must perfect ourselves now and then and we should know the real meaning of the theory “the survival of the fittest”.Simultaneously the author suggests that in the competitive society and the austere natural environment only the person who is of enormous perseverance and strength can have the possibility of survival. In the story, the relationship between human and dog changes along with the attitude that human treats the dog.But unfortunately, Buck never receives equal love and respect from human being.Actually, the author also wants to appeal for the humanity and sympathy for animals as well.In a word, the novel is meaningful and it is of much artistic charm.I really enjoy it.
A lost world of life——About The Call of the WildCould you remember the excerpt of The Call of the Wild in our Extensive Reading I? Could you still remember the plot? Do you know where the call is from? That’s the very beginning of the Call of the Wild.I choose this book for two reasons, that the beginning attracts me and that I once read a book about wolf family of three generations, which is an interesting story about the nature.About the author, Jack London (Jan 12, 1876—Nov 22, 1916) Jack London (1876-1916) is an American worldwide renowned novelist, journalist and social activist. His representative works include the Call of the Wild, Martin Eden, Son of the Wolf, White Fang, etc.He is said to be a natural child. In 1889, he began working 12 to 18 hours for a day at Hickmott’s Cannery. In 1894, he spent 30 days for vagrancy in the Erie County Penitentiary at Buffalo. After many experiences as a hobo and a sailor, he returned to Oakland and attended Oakland High School. He contributed a number of articles to the high school's magazine. His first published work was an account of his sailing experiences. His novels successfully reflect the contradictory views of man’s natur e and destiny in and against the wild. The Call of the Wild (1903)The Call of the Wild is London’s most-read book, and generally considered his best, the most masterpiece of his so-called “early period”. The story was set in 19th-century Klondike Gold Rush, in which sled dogs were bought at generousprices.Buck was a domestic dog in Judge Miller’s home and living a comfortable life until he was sold secretly by the poor gardener and became a sled dog. Buck was a Bernard dog weighed one hundred and forty pounds, tall, strong, and heavy muscled. He couldn’t accommodate to the harsh condition at first. And he wanted to fight, to escape, to go back to his cozy home, but in vain. The man in red taught him the law of stick and club—one must first adjust himself to his surroundings and learn the rules, and only after that he can do what he wants to do. The club of the man in red called back Buck’s nature as a dog. When he firstly served for Fran?ois and Perrault, two couriers, he showed his superior ability to adapt to the environment and his smartness to learn everything he wanted to learn. Curly’s death astonished him and taught him to be cautious. And before he had recovered from the shock caused by the tragic passing of Curly, he was harnessed as a sled dog and step by step wanted to be the leader. But the leading dog, Spitz, wasalready an excellent one, who also considered Buck as enemy and potential competitor. At last, when Spitz once punished him, hurling backward Buck, he knew the time had come. He killed Spitz and took his place. When they pulled into Dawson, Buck was sold as useless thing to three gold diggers, who weren’t veteran in sledding and even didn’t know how to get to their destination. Food was eaten up half way. So Charles, one of the three, decided to kill Buck when he couldn’t get up. However, when he aimed at Buck, John Thornton sprang upon him, knocked him down and told him that if Charles stroke Buck, Thornton would kill him. Thus, Thornton took Buck away. He was the only true friend of Buck. But Buck was a thing of the wild, especially when the calling of wolf from the hills. Once when he came back from hills, he found that Thornton was killed by Indians. What would you do if you were Buck when your beloved friend was killed? Buck became a nut and killed those headsmen and stayed with Thornton for two days and nights, never leaving Thornton out of his sight. And then a nearby wolf howl captures his ears, and he follows the sound to an approaching wolf pack, battling several of these creatures to prove his worth.Beautiful LanguageIt was beautiful spring weather, but neither dogs nor humans were aware of it. Each day the sun rose earlier and set later. It was dawn by threein the morning, and twilight lingered till nine at night. The whole long day was a blaze of sunshine. The ghostly winter silence had given way to the great spring murmur of awakening life. This murmur arose from all the land, fraught with the joy of living. It came from the things that lived and moved again, things which had been as dead and which had not moved during the long months of frost. The sap was rising in the pines. The willows and aspens were bursting out in young buds. Shrubs and vines were putting on fresh garbs of green. Crickets sang in the nights, and in the days all manner of creeping, crawling things rustled forth into the sun. Partridges and woodpeckers were booming and knocking in the forest. Squirrels were chattering, birds singing, and overhead honked the wild-fowl driving up from the south in cunning wedges that split the air. (Chapter V the Toil of Trace and Trail)He was beaten (he knew that); but he was not broken. He saw, once for all, that he stood no chance against a man with a club. He had learned the lesson, and in all his after life he never forgot it. (Chapter I into the Primitive)His cunning was wolf cunning, and wild cunning; his intelligence, shepherd intelligence and St. Bernard intelligence; and all this, plus an experience gained in the fiercest of schools, made him as formidable a creature as any that intelligence roamed the wild. (Chapter VII the Sounding of the Call) My understandingBuck is a cruel, cunning and intelligent image in the Call of the Wild. He killed Spitz to take the leadership, learned apace to sleep under snow and learned fast to steal food without being punished. But in my opinion, Buck in the wild, just as a man in the society, must do what he had done for survival. Jack London compared human to Buck and told us that we must adapt ourselves to the society——learning the rules, learning the necessary knowledge and keeping forging ahead, otherwise we’ll lag behind and be obsolete. That is the life. The Call of the Wild conjures up a lost world, filled with people and place names that were so common at the turn of the twentieth century, but which have since faded away into history, lost and forgotten. It is by reading Buck's story that one can once more remember life as it was, digging up this hidden wealth from deep caves of time.。

“When the long winter nights come on and the wolves follow their meat into the lower valleys, he may be seen running at the head of the back through the pale moonlight or glimmering borealis, leaping giganticabove his followers, his great throat a bellow as he sings a song of the younger world, which is the song of the pack.”There was a script about the savage life in the frozen north of ice and snow. There were the unexplorednorth areas of America and the 19th-century Klondike Gold Rush which dragged men from the entire world into the hard wild to look for gold. There was a road wherea gigantic dog like human fought his way to struggle in the wasteland. There was a civilized beast grew frommildness to wildness. And there came the call of the wild. The background and plotIn the 19th century, it was said that gold had beenfound in the Klondike area in Northern California of vast wilderness, so thousands of people rushed into this uncultivated ground to seek for gold and fortune, which needed a large quantity of dogs to support for the transportation. There came up Buck story which we can can’’t define it as luckiness or unluckiness. Buck, a dog weighed one hundred and forty pounds, tall, strong, and heavy muscled, lived a cozy andcomfortable life in a rich family of a Judge named Miller, but was soled by evil gardener to two dogdealers and was took to Alaska as a sled dog. Led by his second masters, two governmentalcouriers, he studied how to pull a sled and how to livein this cruel world where needed more cunning behaviorand less fake moral and courtesy. For example, helearned to sleep in the snow hole to get warmness fromthe clod nights, and he learned to thief bacon and foodfrom his masters and neighboring camps, as well as that,he learned how to fight effectively and efficiently with his antagonists and survive of the combat about the dominant leader with Spitz. In addition to those, he also went through the hardships in the toil on the ice layer, and he learned how to obtain the victory andstand on the wilderness which was beneficial to himselfwho can only fit the environment, but can ’t defy the harness. After the arduous trace and trail, they finally reached the destination, and then, after a short break, dogs including Buck led by a Scotch half-breed manstepped again on the ice land with the Salt Water Mail.It was a hard trip and a monotonous life operating likemachine that dogs must undertake the heave pulling andpoor condition where they were tired and short of weight. Buck Buck’’ partner, Dave who had something wrong inside suffered most of all, but pride as he was, pulling the sled was his holy missionary job which can fulfill his life and must be done until his death. However, the tough work was still continuous.Thirty days passes, by which time Buck and his mates found how really tired and weak they are until they arrived at the last town. They were in a wretched state, worn out and worn out, which was not thetiredness that came from a brief and excessive effort’ rest, but wasand can be recovered from some hoursthe dead tiredness that came through the slow andprolonged strength drainage of months of toil and hadto need a long vocation to evacuate. Nevertheless, onlythree days after they were bought by a family includinga foolish woman, a callow and ignorant youngster, anda middle aged man with weak and watery eyes. Never mindof dog’s frazzle, the third masters tried their bestto lash out at them with whip, but Buck was not under very good command and not proud and interested of this career. Until they reached at the camp of Thornton, withthe natural instinct and extreme weariness, Bucktolerated the whip from his so called masters andrefused to go ahead which was his luckiness to meet hislast master, Thornton.Without doubt, Thornton was a good master, full’Buck’of wisdom, intelligence and love who can manage Bucks life comfortably and in order. By the carefulattendance form his new master, Buck was on his feet quickly and solidly. Filled with the loying love towardhis master, Buck companied him, saved his life forseveral times and helped him win the gambling party. Then, they faced into the East on an unknown trail to achieve where men and dogs as good as themselves has failed, as the call from the wild became stronger and stronger which attracted Buck to leave the civilizationto look for. The knife that cut out the bound of Buck between his masters was the master master’’sdeaths which left a void in the dog ’s heart and a strengthened calling from the wild. Buck, a civilized dog, finally went backto wolves after thousands of generation by singing a song of the younger world, which is the song of the pack. Survive of the fittestThe Call of the Wild abounded in Darwinism which advocated advocated the the the evolutionism evolutionism evolutionism and and and natural natural natural selection selectiontheory. In the process of having to leave the comfortableMiller ’s house and adapt to the harsh primitivesnowfield, Buck went through the changes from themildness to wildness where he studied the law of club and fang and admitted the rule of failure without progress. “He had learned well the law of club and fang, and he never forewent an advantage or drew back from a foe he had started on the way to death.” “He must” “Kill or be killed, eat or master or be mastered,be eaten, was the law; and this mandate, down out of”the depths of time, he obeyed. After analysis, we can find that related to the Darwinism, learning ability was an important factor ofthe victory of living of Buck. As a south dog living in the rich family and innocent environment, Buck was not wary of Manuel’s uncommon behavior, but situationManuel’has changed entirely after a period of barbaric life: he showed hostility to his all possible mates and took precaution of everything. As well as that, throwing away the moral standard and facing the death of starvation, Buck had an ability of thief. “This firsttheft marked Buck as fit to survive in the hostile Northland environment. It marked his adaptability, hiscapacity to adjust himself to changing conditions, the”death.”lack of which would have meat swift and terrible death. In addition to those, his muscles became hard as iron, and he grew dumb to all ordinary pain, and he can successful take full use of all the elements no matter’s the progression of Buck internal or external. Thatwhich can equip him with thick helmets from being hurt deeply and made him be the fittest. Not only did he learnt by experience, butinstincts long dead became alive again. Maybe knowledgeacquired by learning was Buck’s left hand, instinctshis right. Good pedigree set up his first sense of a tall, strong and muscular potential king, while the instinct helped him to learn fast and save his life. “It was no task for him to learn to fight with cut and” “They came to himslash and the quick wolf snap.without effort or discovery, as though they had been his always.”Buck changed as his living environment changed. With the change of environment, Buck, compared to the previous southern family dog that was mild and gentle, acquired many abilities and skills. He tried his best to live by becoming cunning, cold-blood, and cruelwhich make him step forward on the road of corpse andblood. Survive of the fittest which is demonstrated byadaptation to the environment and wielding the law to protect himself and attack on others made him roared on the top of the food chain and return to wolves. All what Buck has done was not due to his reason and thought, but due to his fit. He was fit to everythingsurrounding him unconsciously and put him to the new way of living quickly.“The theory, ‘Survival of the fittest fittest’’, is the law of biological evolution which implies that plants or animals adapt to the environment to survive or to dieit is the biological survival rule of brutalbiosphere.biosphere.”” Thatis to say, the key of this law is that those who can fit the environment can survive, on the contrary, those failed to fit would be obsolete under the rule of elimination.Peeping at Buck and his struggle, we can have a vision of us human that was also fighting in thebattlefield with our mates and against our enemy.Filled with bustling stuff, we tried our best to stand on the top of right and authority only because that position would give us more materials and the sense ofpride which we depended on to live. Flowers in the greenhouse didn’t know about the hardship of living,so they showed goodwill and send aroma to others; whilelife in the ice field where wind was blowing like knifeand thick snow can bury people only showed a will of survive and cut up the useless goodness to wear on the coldness. We must do it because we had to do it. The packof animal was like a society of people. Death andgenocide would happen on us if we were not willing tofit the environment thoroughly. To dance with theshackle of survive of the fittest was the policy weshould carry out forever, the reason why our human stoodon the top of biologic chain, and the rule of livingof every individual. My opinion on virtue and viceSome people had said virtue was the biggesttreasure that human should obey. There is no doubt thatkindness, loyalty, honor, love, companionship, sympathy, mercy, and other virtue should be followed. However, I argue that there is transformation between different virtue and even the virtue and vice.Showing the feature of three animals: dog, wolf and human, Buck was the bridge that connected the past and present. As the production of human civilization, dog was evolved from wolf and they would still howl on’t raise and train them. the wilderness if human didnBuck was a mirror from which we can see ourselves.Through this dog, writer told us that only in a place where sun darted its forth beams and everything was in order human will wear the coat of basic goodness, otherwise, kindness would be eliminated if it met withthe club and fang. In the cruel process of primitive accumulation of capitalism, mercy and sympathy was notneeded for those quality can lead to death of innocent people. In the period of survive of the fittest, life was not concerned with civilization, while wilderness was the real marrow of life and echoing for the wilderness was the beginning of revival. Buck realizedthat “Mercy did not exist in the primordial life. It was misunderstood for fear, and such misunderstanding made for death.” This phenomenon can be seen in dogsas well as human. Wilderness were calling for human and’s heart stealthily.human’eliminating the kindness in humanIn A Treatise of Human Nature, British philosopherDavid Hume has said moral came from human ’s emotionand conscience but not rationality. The essence ofmoral existed in the perceptual knowledge, but notrational knowledge. Therefore, the reason why moral distinctions had the division of virtue and vice was that the judgment of moral came from human human’’sattitude toward their internal actions and external objects. Thejudgment of moral came from our interest appeal; that is to say, the judgment of moral came from what was goodto us, but not what is good.Let us think the question that which direction ofBuck ’s s change change change to to to a a a beast beast beast was, was, was, progression progression progression or orretrogression? The answer was that we can ’t answerbecause he survived due to that he threw away those so called virtue and carry out those so called villainy. All what Buck did was under the pressure of living, andhe responded to the call of the wild only because he wanted to live. Maybe in the comfortable and civilizedJudge Judge’’shouse, he would stick to the standard of moral and protect the respect of Judge Judge’’sriding whip by dying under his whip. But in this cold field, sticking tothose so called moral was a fool. Possibly in this kindof world, brutality, cold-bloodedness, cunning and soon was the moral. The division of virtue and vice was the refectionof the division of civilization and wilderness to some’t define what moral was and what degree. Maybe we canvice was now in some scene, but we can try to last for enough time to seek for the answer.Run after the free life’s natureThe call from the wild stood for humanto run after a simple, independent and free life. Buck was bored of the complex life where he must deal with such a big net of relationship. He just wantedto run and leap through the forest, howled under the grey moonlight, ate what he liked and killed what he liked without many rules to obey. No one desired to live’s difficult and tiring toa complicated life for itreckon other people, while life in the wilderness was just that eat or eaten, kill or killed and there was no middle ground. Easy and simple life was set up on the uncivilized world where creatures didn’t have somuch relation and elements to consider. Only beingindependent from all that can we find what we wanted. When unpracticed Charles and his relatives sunk“A yawning hole wasin a ice hole, writer said thathole was a capitalistic” Thatseen.”all that was to be seen.vast mouth that can eat people, but which would be“Here a yellow streamrotten if we escaped from it.flows from rotted moosehide sacks and sinks into the ground, with long grasses growing through it andvegetable mould overrunning it and hiding its yellow from the sun.” The gold that Thornton got has becomea yellow stream because they were eroded by natural power and lost their value. Imagine in a world where was entirely natural and uncivilized, gold, a kind of’t it?iron and currency, was entirely futile, isnBeing free of human world and even free of materials, Buck got a totally new life where he can runat the head of the pack through the pale moonlight to release his vitality and got comfort from nature. We needed materials actually, but material was voidactually. How can we get free? To get free of our hearts.ConclusionThere are two sentences I’d like to mention. First, human beings, never degenerate into beasts. Second, beasts, never degenerate into human beings. Correctness of those two sentences should be discussed.’s progression began in the point when human Human’Humanbeings evolved from wilderness period to civilization, but the retrogression also began at the point whenpeople shared the feast of civilization. For us who arefar away from the wilderness and raised and trained by civilization, this book gives us a new vision.Sometimes a picture floating in my mind: in the icy forest, a silhouette of Buck as a wolf caned his neck to howl toward the pale moonlight to echo the’s the song of animal, and the howling of pack. Thatchant of human, and the snarl of life.。

The Call of the Wild is a classic novel written by Jack London, which tells the story of a dog named Buck and his journey from domestication to the wild. After reading this book, I was deeply moved by the powerful theme of the call of the wild and the struggle for survival. The novel begins with Buck, a large and powerful St. Bernard-Scotch Shepherd, living a comfortable life in the Santa Clara Valley. However, he is suddenly kidnapped and sold into the brutal world of the Alaskan gold rush. Buck is forced to adapt to the harsh environment and learn the ways of the wild in order to survive. Throughout the story, Buck faces numerous challenges and dangers, but he ultimately embraces his wild instincts and becomes a leader among the wolves. One of the most striking aspects of the novel is the way London portrays the natural world as both beautiful and unforgiving. The vivid descriptions of the Alaskan wilderness and the animals that inhabit it are both breathtaking and terrifying. London's writing truly captures the raw power and majesty of nature, and it is impossible not to be swept away by the sheer force of the wild. The theme of the call of the wild is central to the novel, as Buck feels a primal urge to return to his ancestral roots and live as a wild animal. This theme resonates with readers on a deep level, as it speaks to the fundamental human desire for freedom and connection to the natural world. Buck's journey from domestication to the wild reflects the universal struggle for authenticity and self-discovery.Moreover, the novel also explores the concept of survival of the fittest, as Buck must compete with other dogs and animals for food, shelter, and dominance. The brutal and unforgiving nature of the wild is depicted in a raw and unflinching manner, and it serves as a powerful reminder of the harsh realities of life.In conclusion, The Call of the Wild is a timeless and thought-provoking novel that explores the themes of the call of the wild, the struggle for survival, and the primalinstincts that lie within us all. Jack London's masterful storytelling and vivid descriptions make this book a must-read for anyone who longs for adventure and a deeper connection to the natural world. After reading this novel, I was left with a profound appreciation for the wild and a renewed sense of awe for the power of nature. This book truly captures the untamed spirit that resides within us all.。
1 J ack London was born in San Francisco on January 12, 1876, the illegitimate son of Flora Wellman, the rebellious daughter of an aristocratic family, and William Chaney, a traveling astrologer who abandoned Flora when she became pregnant. Eight months after her son was born, Flora married John London, a grocer and Civil War veteran whose last name the infant took. London grew up in Oakland, and his family was mired in poverty throughout his youth. He remained in school only through the eighth grade but was a voracious reader and a frequent visitor to the Oakland Public Library, where he went about edu-cating himself and laying the groundwork for his impending literary career. In his adolescent years, London led a rough life, spending time as a pirate in San Francisco Bay, traveling the Far East on sealing expeditions, and making his way across America as a tramp. Finally, temporarily tired of adventure, London returned to Oakland and graduated from high school. He was even admitted to the University of California at Berkeley, but he stayed only for a semester. The Klondike gold rush (in Canada’s Yukon Territory) had begun, and in 1897 London left college to seek his fortune in the snowy North. The gold rush did not make London rich, but it furnished him with plenty of material for his career as a writer, which began in the late 1890s and continued until his death in 1916. He worked as a reporter, covering the Russo-Japanese War of 1904 and the Mexican Revolution in the 1910s; meanwhile, he published ov er fifty books and became, at the time, America’s most famous author. For a while, he was one of the most widely read authors in the world. He embodied, it was said, the spirit of the American West, and his portrayal of adventure and frontier life seemed like a breath of fresh air in comparison with nineteenth-century Victorian fiction, which was often overly concerned with what had begun to seem like trivial and irrelevant social norms. The Call of the Wild, published in 1903, remains London’s most famous work, blending his experiences as a gold prospector in the Canadian wilderness with his ideas about nature and the struggle for existence. He drew these ideas from various influential figures, including Charles Darwin, an English naturalist credited with -developing theories about biological evolution, and Friedrich Nietzsche, a prominent German philosopher. Although The Call of the Wild is first and foremost a story about a dog, it displays a -philosophical depth absent in most animal adventures.London was married twice—once in 1900, to his math tutor and friend Bess Maddern, and again in 1905, to his secretary Charmian Kittredge, whom he considered his true love. As his works soared in popularity, he became a contradictory figure, arguing for socialist principles and women’s rights even as he himself lived a materialist life of luxury, sailing the world in his boat, the Snark, and running a large ranch in northern California. Meanwhile, he preached -equality and the brotherhood of man, even as novels like The Call of the Wild celebrated violence, power, and brute force.London died young, on November 22, 1916. He had been plagued by stomach problems and failing kidneys for years, but many have suggested that his death was a suicide. Whatever the cause, it is clear that London, who played the various roles of journalist, novelist, prospector, sailor, pirate, husband, and father, lived life to the fullest.1。

(Chapter VII The Sounding of the Wild) When the last sentence vanished from my eyes, I can still perceive an echo of a song - a wild song, which knocks up my dizzy mind that always cheerfully sink into the so-called civilized world without questioning. Wild, is no longer a symbol of the law of jungle but a headspring where streams out love, passion, bravery, loyalty, friendship, venture, petition and tolerance all these virtues can easily be found in the Call of the Wild. Jack London (1876-1916) is a worldwide renowned novelist. His stories successfullyreflect the contradictory views of man’s nature and destiny in and against the wild, and his "fight to survive" notion has gained him and his works timeless popularity, particularly, the Call of the Wild It tells a story of a gigantic dog, named Buck, who is stolen from a rich and fortable home and forcedto learn to survive as an Alaskan sled dog. Buck, at first, is too savage for the pany of man until he coincidently encounters his beloved master-kindhearted John Thornton. Finally, John’s incidental death breaks Buck’s last tie to the man and drives him into his long-desired wild with his pack. In the story, Buck and John simply adopt themselves to answer the call of the wild. When it es to Buck’s mind that one day he will eventually leave John- his master, all he wants to do is just to help him finish thegold-rush-trip. He " from then on, night and day, never put a halt, in desperation, he burst into long stretch of flight, did not to stay him (John)" (Chapter VII The Sounding of The Wild) Buck wished to remember John’s image forever, he "for two days and nights never left camp, never let Thornton out of his sight. He followed him about at his work, watched him while saw him into blankets at night and out of themin the morning" (Chapter VII) When I read these words I just could not hold my tears bursting. Can a real man devote himself to loyalty and friendship in such a way? On the other hand, John Thornton is not only adog-lover but also a brave and venturous man. He is so straightforward and simple that makes him an acmodating man. Once he firmly roots a goal into his heart, it seems that nothing could prevent him from acplishing it except death.I do not know whether the persistence is the most vital element to make a man successful, but what I know is that you are not far away from success once you occupy it. It is Jack London who plunges me into the animated wild from the hustle-and-bustle and from desperate city. There, I merely cannot deny the attraction of Buck’s bark, which enlightens me to pursue another lost half of the nature in mankind, and to dig out a true meaning of life. Dare we imagine that London intentionally employs Buck to set us a model with perfect characters (count barbarity out)? The answer is affirmed. We, as animals, are from the wild but shedding off more and more wild signs, which demonstrate us as the "uncivilized". However, who can fully guarantee that we have not overlooked some essential wild-endowed virtues?Especially, nowadays, it seems more crucial for us to stop looking at the post-industrialized world and to ponder for a while. When cheats, betrayals, lies, lusts and crimes stuff a materialized society, whether London uses this novel to help himself escape the reality or warn the earthy people, to us, modern man, is all the same. It appears horrible that in modern society many people are enthusiastically talking about how to build up "special relations" to the authority, deceiving andlying to each other. To them life is a mask-wearing process rather than a hard work. Every time, you browse WebPages, scandals in politics, business, the entertainment circle and even on campus crowd into your eyes. Oh, what is the essence of human beings? What is the civilization to us? Do we need to look back at where we came from? Is it good or bad for us to speak out what we think and to do what the consciences demand us to? Are we wasting talents given by the mighty nature? Be an honest, straightforward, warmhearted, emotional and responsible man or be a shrewd, cold hearted and astute hypocrite? While embracing the "civilized" rubbish, we are losing those good virtues, which are the calls of the wild. Once we lose them, we are to lose ourselves, and we will get nowhere. I wish this dreadful thought is totally a fallacy, but, now, it is chilling me hard. One day when I happen to stand on the top of a grand mountain to observe a boundlessprairie enveloped by the sapphire firmament and bed by gusts of the rhythmical west wind, a morning sun sprinkles me her warmth andbrilliance in a graceful way, however, at that moment, I am afraid that I cannot appreciate these beauties, I am a lost " civilized man" then. Please, please do not let e true while we are still able to answer the call of the wild. 2The story sounds like just a dog tale at first--a dog, Buck, is kidnapped from his fortable life in California and sold as a sled dogfor the Alaskan gold rush. While he endures the wilderness and the other dogs, Buck learns that survival es only with tooth and fang. This lesson brings him very close to his forbears, the wolves. If you look deeper, Call of the Wild is as much a story of humans as it is a dog tale. Buck encounters various inpetent masters who try to break his spirit. Are we like this? But Buck also learns to trust a master who is gentle and gives love. We can be like this, too.Call of the Wild is not a story for the squeamish or very young. By involving us in the characters lives, Jack London tells the truth. It is a life-and-death war between the harsh land and the soul every day. There is blood, death, cruelty--but its the truth. 3" He sings a song of the younger world, which is the song of the pack." The Call Of The Wild
A dog’s legend<The Call Of The Wild>, J ack London’s most famous novel, was published in 1903.It tells us a story about a dog named Buck who is stolen from a rich and very comfortable home and has to struggle for survival. Buck is a very strong dog. After he is stolen, he also be sold many times and eventually he starts his gold-rush-trip as an Alaskan sled dog and enters the very wasteland which is far away from human civilization. But he amazingly adapts to the life which is of much challenges and he loves there very much. During the time he adjusts himself to the cruel world he is aware of the principle about survival of the fittest and the tenet of the nature and justice. The terrible living environment makes him to learn not only to be cunning but also hypocritical. He knows that only in doing so can he survive from the fierce competition. And more often than not he can thoroughly make full use of his ability that he learned. After conquers every contention with other dogs, he certainly becomes the leader of the dogs. During the hardly way of sled, the master changes several times and Buck encounters John Thornton, one of his masters, and finally Buck and John Thornton becomes very good friends. The master John pulls him out of awful donkey works and gives him comfort. He also saves John’s life more than one time as repaying an obligation. At last, John Thornton, the master of Buck and the one Buck deeply loves is killed by Indians. Buck is very grievous and he revenges his dead master. Then he enters the wild and responses to the mysterious call of the wild which he yearns for a long time. At last, he becomes a veritable wolf, and of course the leader of the wolves. John Thornton is not only a dog-lover but also a brave and venturous man. He is so straightforward and simple that makes him an accommodating man. Once he firmly roots a goal into his heart, it seems that nothing could prevent him from accomplishing it except death. I do not know whether the persistence is the most vital element to make a man successful, but what I know is that you are not far away from success once you occupy it.Although Buck is a dog, but his tough way of life and his attitude to the lifecan absolutely reflect the real world of the author’s age. What’s more, the connotation the story wants to tell us is the inevitable result of the development of capitalism. It teaches us if we want to survive we must perfect ourselves now and then and we should know the real meaning of the theory “the survival of the fittest”. Simultaneously the author suggests that in the competitive society and the austere natural environment only the person who is of enormous perseverance and strength can have the possibility of survival. In the story, the relationship between human and dog changes along with the attitude that human treats the dog. But unfortunately, Buck never receives equal love and respect from human being. Actually, the author also wants to appeal for the humanity and sympathy for animals as well.In a word, the novel <The Call Of The Wild> is meaningful and it is of much artistic charm. I really enjoy it.。

A Review of The Call ofThe WildAfter reading The Call of The Wild, I have a lot of feelings.First, the dogs in the book are all loyal to their masters. “Sick as he was, Dave resented being taken out, grunting and growling while the traces were unfastened and whimpering broken-heartedly when he saw Sol-leks (another dog) in the position he had held and served so long. For the pride of trace and trail was his, and, sick to death, he could not bear that another dog should do his work.”Both loyalty and honor are based on love which is what touches me deeply. Because of love to Thornton, Buck does such thing that seems impossible to accomplish. Because of sense of honor, Dave insists on working till he dies. And through Buck’s experiences living in the wild, Jack London wants to tell us that the world is dominated by those who are much stronger and more powerful than common people, and only the stronger ones could exist. This is the law of club and fang. Buck gradually realizes the law and begins to obey the law after he is stolen and taken to the wild. The savage environment which is full of tricks, dangers and deaths turns him to be more powerful and cunning. Finally, he becomes the leader of his team. Similar to the wild, our society becomes crueler and crueler, and living in the society becomes harder and harder. If you want to exist, to have a good life, you should be tough enough to stand the sufferings; you should keep alert, watch and learn; you should make yourself stronger than others. This is the law of living. As we know, Buck answers the call of and returns to the wild finally. In my opinion, the call is not from the wild though Buck often hears the howl of the wolves. Instead, itis from the bottom of Buck’s heart.

The Call of the Wild is a classic novel written by Jack London, which tells the story of a dog named Buck who is taken from his comfortable home in California and sold as a sled dog in the Yukon during the Klondike Gold Rush. Throughout the novel, Buck faces numerous challenges as he adapts to the harsh and unforgiving wilderness, ultimately embracing his primal instincts and becoming a leader among the wild dogs. After reading The Call of the Wild, I was deeply moved by the powerful themes of survival, instinct, and the primal nature of humanity. The novel explores the idea that deep within every living being, there exists a primal instinct that drives them to survive and thrive in the face of adversity. This theme is exemplified through Buck's transformation from a domesticated pet to a fierce and independent leader of the wild dogs. It made me reflect on the nature of human beings and the primal instincts that drive us to overcome challenges and persevere in the face of adversity. Moreover, the novel also delves into the idea of the struggle for power and dominance in the wild. Buck's journey to become the leader of the pack highlights the primal nature of competition and the drive to establish dominance in the natural world. This theme made me consider the parallels between the animal kingdom and human society, and how the struggle for power and dominance is a fundamental aspect of both.In addition, The Call of the Wild also explores the concept of the bond between humans and animals. Throughout the novel, Buck forms deep and meaningful connections with various human characters, which ultimately shape his understanding of loyalty and companionship. This theme resonated with me as it emphasized the profound emotional connections that can exist between humans and animals, and the impact that these relationships can have on both parties.Furthermore, the novel's vivid descriptions of the Yukon wilderness and the brutal conditions that the characters endure truly transported me to another time and place. Jack London's masterful storytelling and evocative prose painted a vivid picture of the harsh and unforgiving landscape, immersing me in the brutal realities of life in the wild. Thisaspect of the novel allowed me to appreciate the resilience and strength of the characters as they navigated the challenges of the natural world. In conclusion, The Call of the Wild is a captivating and thought-provoking novel that explores the primal instincts of survival, the struggle for power, the bond between humans and animals, and the harsh realities of the natural world. It left a lasting impression on me and prompted me to contemplate the primal nature of humanity and the fundamental instincts that drive us to overcome adversity. Jack London's timeless tale is a testament to the enduring power of the human spirit and the untamed wilderness that lies within us all.。

Although The Call of the Wild is first and foremost a story about a dog, it displays a -philosophical depth absent in most animal adventures.
London was married twice—once in 1900, to his math tutor and friend Bess Maddern, and again in 1905, to his secretary Charmian Kittredge, whom he considered his true love. As his works soared in popularity, he became a contradictory figure, arguing for socialist principles and women’s rights even as he himself lived a materialist life of luxury, sailing the world in his boat, the Snark, and running a large ranch in northern California. Meanwhile, he preached -equality and the brotherhood of man, even as novels like The Call of the Wild celebrated violence, power, and brute force.
London died young, on November 22, 1916. He had been plagued by stomach problems and failing kidneys for years, but many have suggested that his death was a suicide. Whatever the cause, it is clear that London, who played the various roles of journalist, novelist, prospector, sailor, pirate, husband, and father, lived life to the fullest.
