Among the thousands of inventions coming out every year, which ones are the most amazing?Time magazine with the US said last week that Snuppy, the first cloned dog, is the most amazing invention of 2005.The five-month-old Afghan dog was cloned at Seoul National University in South Korea by a 45-person team led by Professor Woo Suk Hwang. Snuppy ’s genes (基因) come from a single cell taken from the ear of an adult Afghan; rather than the egg (卵子) and sperm (精子) of a mother and father. The technique used to create Snuppy is the same technique British researchers used to create Dolly the sheep, the world’s first cloned mammal .Time selects inventions each year they believe may have a huge impact (影响) on people’s lives.Other inventions listed in the magazine include a bicycle with a hydrogen-powered (氢动力) engine, a one-use video camcorder (可携式摄像机), and a robotic cat that recognizes speech commands.Let’s take a closer look at some other great inventions of 2005:Ever wonder why you feel more tired some mornings than others? Farmers living in the countryside think so. For hundreds of years, they have observed animals. They think animals’ behavior can be connected to future weather conditions or events. For example, if swans fly into the wind, a hurricane is coming. Or, if cows lie down, a rainstorm is coming. There are many traditional stories connecting animals and natural events. Many people think that these stories are just folklore, traditional stories and beliefs without scientific evidence. Scientists, however, are beginning to take another look at some of these ideas.Kiyoshi Shimamura is a Japanese earthquake researcher. He noticed an increase in dog bites a short time before earthquakes hit. Then, he did an investigation of twelve public health centers in Kobe, Japan. These health centers treated people after the 1995 earthquake. He noticed some interesting information about the month before the big earthquake. Treatment for animal bites had increased. In fact, aggressive behavior in dogs, such as biting and barking loudly, jumped 60 percent!People noticed other changes in animal behavior before the earthquake as well. For example, fish began swimming together in large groups, only in the middle of the water and not near the edges. Also, birds flew away from their nests for many days, leaving their eggs unprotected. The animal behavior suggests that animals may be able to predict natural events better than people.A 18分)1. _________ Can you predict the future?2. _________ Researchers say the right brain is connected with musical skills.3. _________ Have you any evidence for this statement?4. _________ The doctor treated my problem.5. _________ She regarded that the war as an aggressive one.6._________ The government ordered a full investigation of the food industry.B)根据短文内容,选出最佳答案:(每题6分,共30分)1. The lovely white birds fly from Siberia to stay in the Dianchi area of the city in winter. But this year the former lovely white angels became flying devils (魔鬼) in locals’ eyes, due to their fear of bird flu.Although scientists have not found the fatal virus in the birds, few people will dare to risk their lives to feed the birds this year. Across the world, wild migratory birds (候鸟) seem to have become the world’s public enemy number one since the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus was detected not only in Asia but also as far away as Europe and Africa.Geographically speaking (从地理上说), the spread of bird flu appears to be following the migratory routes of wild birds. Since the World Health Organization warned last month that migratory birds could carry the deadly H5N1 virus that causes bird flu, many countries, like China, have started tracking migratory birds and cleaning up poultry markets (家禽市场). China also cancelled (取消) all pigeon races last week. Some people are even giving chicken dishes a miss, despite no evidence (证据) that you can catch bird flu from eating chicken.Scientists said that the migratory routes of wild birds are often far away from big cities. So the risk of transferring (传染) the virus directly from wild birds to humans is very low. Scientists also warned that wild birds are shy creatures. They see you coming and fly away at once. But if a wild bird becomes easy to approach, people should be careful that it may be sick. There are already three areas hit by bird flu in the provinces of Hunan and Anhui and the northern region of Inner Mongolia, areas all on the migratory routes of wild birds. In the past two weeks China has revealed three outbreaks of the H5N1 virus that killed 3,800 chickens, ducks and geese (鹅).1. B The citizens of Kunming will not welcome the black-headed gulls this year because ___________.A. the gulls have become flying devilsB. some of the gulls have brought bird fluC. the gulls have caused deathD. the gulls may bring in the possibility of bird flu2. A To prevent bird flu, China has taken many actions except ___________.A. cleaning up poultry marketsB. canceling all pigeon racesC. killing all sick birdsD. giving chicken dishes a miss3. A Which areas are not struck by bird flu?A. Yunnan.B. Hunan.C. Anhui.D. Inner Mongolia.4. B Which of the statements is TRUE according to the passage?A. Every continent in the world has found bird flu.B. A wild bird easy to approach may be sick.C. The experiment showed that there was a means by which a bee communicated to other bees that it had found food. That was dance! In fact, bees do two kinds of dances to tell other bees of their food discovery. First, there is a circle dance, in which the bee moves in a circle inside the hive. The circle dance is used when the food is not more then ten metres away. A second kind of dance done by the bee is a waggling dance. That is to say, the bee wiggles the end of its body as it moves in a straight line, then it turns in a semicircle (半圆), runs straight again. Steveland was born earlier than expected time and totally without sight in 1950. He became Stevie Wonder—composer, singer, and pianist. Ronnie immediately recognized Stevie’s gift and took him to audition (试音) for Berry Gordy, the president of Histville USA, a large recording company now known as Motown. It isalso expected that little sunlight and rainfall would limit the growth of a tree. The change from a favorable to an unfavorable climate can be determined by reading the pattern of rings in a tree trunk. To find the weather of ten years ago, count the rings of a tree trunk from the outside to the inside. If the tenth ring is far from the other rings, then it is certain that plenty of sunny and rainy weather occurred. If the rings are closed together, then the climate was bad for the tree.Studying tree rings is important not only for the history of weather, but also for the history of man. In a region of New Mexico you can find only sand---no trees and no people. However, many centuries ago a large population lived there. They left suddenly. Why?A scientist studied patterns of dead tree rings which had grown there. He decided that the people had to leave because they had cut down all the trees. Trees were necessary to make fires and buildings. So, after the people destroyed the trees, they had to move. In this instance studying tree rings uncovers an exciting fact about the history of man.9. It is understood that in a favorable climate ________.A. tree rings grow togetherB. tree rings grow far apartC. trees in New Mexico will grow big and tallD. people can cut down most of the trees in New Mexico10. By studying the dead tree rings, the scientist discovered ___.A. where the people had leftB. what the people used to eatC. how the people leftD. why the people had to leave12. The people had to leave the region of New Mexico because ___.A. they had cut down all the treesB. there were many trees thereC. they had no waterD. bad weather stopped the growth of trees13. The main idea of the passage is _________.A. tree rings reflect the history of weather and the history of manB. destroying tree will do man no goodC. studying tree ring is the only way to know the history of weatherD. man shouldn’t cut so many trees答案随堂反馈I. 1. seated 2. plant 3. to water 4. straight 5. questioned6. experienced7. packing8. back9. heading 10. close II. 1. When he was a young man, he went to a newspaper office in Kansas City where he was living. He had some friends who worked in the office there. He took along some of his pictures in the hope of getting a job there. However, he had no luck. They looked at his pictures and said, “Sorry, young man. We don’t think there is anything of interest in your pictures.”Disney’s friends tried to encourage him. “Don’t worry, Walt. We like your pictures. They’re very good. We’re sure you’ll be well -known as an artist before long.”Disney did not lose heart. He continued to draw lots of pictures. His family was poor and he used to sit in the family garage and draw pictures there. One day a mouse came into the garage and played on the floor. Disney stopped drawing and watched the mouse. The mouse came towards him, so he gave the mouse a piece of bread. Then the mouse came and sat on his desk. Day after day the mouse came back and was given more bread. In this way over several days the artist and his mouse became good friends. Some years later, Disney moved to the west coast of the USA. He tried to get work as an artist, but still he was unsuccessful. One day he remembered the mouse that used to come out in his father’s garage. He picked up his pencil and started to draw. Day after day he experimented and drew different pictures of the mouse that he had known. At last he was pleased with one of his pictures of the mouse. He called it Mickey Mouse.Disney’s success as a cartoon -maker had begun. He soon drew other cartoon characters like Donald Duck and during the 1920s and the 1930s he made scores of cartoons about them. These cartoons were all short ones. Unit 2 The environment 同步练习(一)总分 100分 时间 40 分钟 成绩评定 __________________ I. 学生习作欣赏:ASave our earthWith the development of society, the earth is being damaged by people who are seeking comfort at all costs. The sky is no longer blue. The air is no longer fresh. The rivers are no longer clean. Many animals and plants are disappearing from the earth. And the size of deserts is growing rapidly every year. Our planet has been seriously polluted. There are many reasons for this. First, many paper mills send out waste water and smoke that are not processed. Second, the expansion of large cities also brings about terrible pollution. Nowadays, waste gas and everyday rubbish have become big problems. Third, a huge number of trees are cut down each year. Whenever there is a strong wind, the top soil is blown away. Sandstorms badly affect people’ s lives and health. We all know that we have only one home. If we continue polluting it, the earth will turn out to be a planet which is unfit for us to live on. To save the earth means to save ourselves. Let’s take action without any delay. Let’s try our best to save the earth, our home.II. 阅读下文,完成后面问题:Wuzhen (乌镇), an ancient river townOn both sides of a stone-paved street stand pubs, restaurants, pawnshops(当铺), and other businesses all housed in brown wooden buildings. Long rivers flow through the town, with stone bridges of various designs going over them. The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal (京杭大运河) passes by. Old waterside houses and outside corridors(走廊) can be found here and there. This is the ancient river town of Wuzhen.Wuzhen Town, in Tongxiang City, Zhejiang Province, has a history of more than 1,000 years. Of the ancient residential houses, workshops, and stores still standing on the banks of the rivers 169,600 square meters, making up 81.54 percent of the town's total area, have remained unchanged, giving it an old feelingTradition is still very alive in Wuzhen. In addition to flower-drum operas, shadow-puppet show, and temple fairs, Wuzhen also attracts visitors with its time-honored art of making indigo-dyed printed calico(靛青印花布).Wuzhen is at its best on rainy days. Wandering with an umbrella along a quiet old lane(巷子) past the centuries-old wooden houses and seeing the rain flow off the engraved eaves(木雕屋檐) that cover the doorways is an amazing experience. The falling raindrops make ripples(波纹) on the surfaces of the rivers, while boats travel to and fro. The waterside pavilions(亭子), corridors, and the arched bridges make a charming scene.People in Wuzhen live a simple life. Many of them breed silkworms and raise flowers. They have mostly kept the tradition of buying fruits and vegetables from trade boats through the windows of their waterside houses. They benefit from a perfect harmony of man and nature.Wuzhen has been included by UNESCO (联合国教科文组织) in the list of World Cultural Heritages. 1.
