Papa’s Straw HatPapa was a ranger. He worked with horses. He always wore clean clothes with a hat even when he worked. His hat was always the same kind of a cowboy hat- large black hat of heavy wool. He wore his hat full and high. I think he wanted to look taller than he really was.Mama was proud of the way he looked when he wore his hat and his best clothes. But in some way she got the idea that papa would lose his hair if he kept wearing a heavy wool cowboy hat in the hot weather. She began to talk about his hats.“Papa,” she said one day, “why don't you get a nice cool straw hat? That heavy wool cowboy hat may cause losing hair!” Papa laughed at her and explained that the horses wouldn’t recognize him if he changed the hat. But she didn’t believe him.Mama talked and talked about the hat all summer long. At last papa answered, a little angry, “It would not the cowboy hat but a wife’s talking about the hat that makes me lose my hair.”Mama had a very serious look on her face. She went straight out and later came home with a straw hat. It was a bad year for ranger and we didn't have much money. She thought that if she spent the money for a straw hat, papa would wear it. When papa saw the hat, his face got red. Without a word, he pulled the straw hat down over his head until it hid his eyes and went on to train the horses. He was a good ranger and gentle to his horses. But as papa got close to the horses this time, they jumped high into the air, raising their front feet. All of them ran around in the rounded field and then raced toward the barn. Papa began to shout “Woo boys. Steady boys, steady.” But there was nothing equal to.Papa walked back straight to the stove in the kitchen, pushed the straw hat deep downinto the fire then turned to mama, in a way that even frightened me. “Now listen to me, mama. Understand this I will never wear a straw hat or any other kind of hat my horses do not like.” Then he put on his wool cowboy hat and walked out of the house.I never heard mama talk any more about hats. Perhaps, that is why when papa died many years later, there was a round spot on the top of his head where there was no hair.【小题1】According to the passage, a ranger is _______.A.a person wearing a woolen hatB.a position requiring clean clothesC.a person training horses for some purposeD.a person riding a carriage with horses【小题2】Mama bought papa a straw hat because _______.A.most cowboys preferred to wear itB.she was worried about his healthC.a woolen one didn’t suit papaD.it was cheap and she could save money【小题3】What quality can we learn from papa?A.Gentle.
My parents lived through the Great Depression of the 1930s and I heard stories from both of them about how their lives changed because of it. The same was true of my in-laws whose lives were also affected negati vely. For example, my husband’s grandfather owned a factory. Owing to the stock (证券) market crash, he lost the factory and went back to work in the very factory he’d once owned. He could no longer afford to send my father-in-law to college. My father-in-law worked full time as a pipe fitter and went to school part-time to earn his degree, which took seven years.Somehow, my husband and I never dreamed that we would live through anything similar. However, as they say, history often repeats itself. In 1929, the stock market crashed in the month of October. The same thing happened in 2008. My husband, who had invested (投资) all our money in the market, was in a state of shock. Each day the news was more terrible.“We’ve lost more than half of our wealth,” he tol d me.I just stared at him. “How can that be?”“I thought we had good, solid investments, but it seems I was wrong.”“Well, we do have pensions (抚恤金),” I said. “Hopefully, they won’t be affected. Since we have never lived a high lifestyle to begin with, I don’t think we have to worry.”“I did hope to leave our children and grandchildren a generous inheritance (遗产),” my husband said. He shook his head in disbelief.“We’ll still be able to give gifts. Love is the most important gift anyway.” Our children are grown and we always try to be generous to them and our grandchildren.“It just won’t be the same.”“The world is always changing,” I said. “You never know what will happen. The main thing is not to get discouraged. As long as we have our health and can aff ord the necessities of life, there’s no reason to be upset. When you have your health, you can always earn more money.”I hugged my husband and he kissed me in return.“I guess you’re right,” he agreed. “We love each other. We have our health and enough mo neyto live on comfortably. That’s all that matters.”We had to move out of our house into an apartment. Since few people could afford a house in those hard days, we decided to offer it for considerably less than it would normally be worth. Even so, several buyers changed their mind days before closing. But finally, our home was sold.As we shook hands with the new owners, I told them how fortunate they were.“Not only are you getting a bargain in the price, but this house has good luck. We bought the house from a family who lived in it for nine years. They were a happy family, a husband, wife and five children. It was a cheerful house and we had a good feeling about it. We raised our children here as well.”“That’s good to hear,” the young woman said with a smile. “We have two young children ourselves. And I believe in luck too.”We nodded our heads in agreement, understanding each other.“You’ll live only six houses from the best primar y school in the town and your children won’t even have to cross a street,” I said. “Our children used to come home each day and have lunch with me.”“We like the woods in the back,” the young man told us. “We’re going to plant a large garden in the backyard.”They seemed so young and happy and full of plans. My husband and I had to smile. At least some good was coming out of the economic difficulty. We no longer needed a house. It was good to know that another young family would now be living in what had been a happy, loving home for us. Also, the house needed work that we no longer had the energy to perform. These may be tough times economically, but as for me, I intend to look forward, not back. As Shakespeare said in Macbeth, “what’s done is done and cannot be undone.” It’s the present and future that matter. We can learn from our mistakes and make our lives better.55. In the first paragraph, the author described her husband’s family in order to tell us ______.A. economic difficulty can change a family’s lifestyleB. people have to sell their factories when the stock market crashesC. everything can happen in today’s worldD. my husband’s family suffered a lot in the 1930s56. What happened to the author’s family in 2008?A. Her husband invested all their money in the stock market.B. They had to live on pensions.C. They had to sell their house.D. In the author’s opinion what matters in life is ______.A. wealth and healthB. health and loveC. money and workD. house and children59. It takes more than just practice to become an Olympian. Gold medal performances require some serious nutrition. Have you ever wondered what these successful athletes eat to stay in peak shape?Keri Glassman, a registered dietitian and founder of Nutritious Life Meals, appeared on“Good Morning America”today to give you a glimpse into the diets ofsome top athletes. Some of their meals could surprise you.Crazy Calorie CountGlassman said Olympians eat a lot of food—quantities that for ordinary people would constitute pigging out. One secret of swimmer Michael Phelps’ astonishing performance in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing was consuming as many as 12, 000 calories in one day.Athletes can eat like this and not gain any weight because their workouts are intense. According to Glassman, Phelps’ workouts can burn 4, 000 to 6, 000 calories in a day, and those calories must be added in order to train the following day.Snacking SecretsSome athletes eat strange foods that improve their performance. Yohan Blake, the Jamaica sprinter and 100-meter world champion, has stolen champion sprinter Usain Bolt’s thunder on the track during the Olympic trials. Asked about how he gets his energy, Blake answered that he eats 16 bananas per day, Glassman said.Jonathan Horton, the lead gymnast on the US team, has a blood sugar problem. His solution is honey. When he starts to feel shaky at the gym, he takes honey to boost his energy, Glassman said.Foods for RecoveryWhat are the best foods to help the body recover after harsh competition? For Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte, the recovery meal is grilled chicken breasts with Alfredo sauce, whole-g rain spaghetti and a salad with lemon juice and olive oil. Lochte, who recently cut out junk food, candy and soda, has undertaken a strength-training regimen(养生法)that involves flipping tractor tires and tossing beer kegs, Glassman said.【文章大意】运动员的成长不仅需要锻炼, 还需要营养, 合理膳食也至关重要。

(2015年湖北省黄冈中学等三校联考)I remember the first time that I was about 8 years old when for the first time, there was a computer in the classroom. I remember that my teacher allowed each student to take turns to play various educational games on the computer. One day, I found the source code for one of these games. Without knowing or being taught any programming language, I was able to figure out some of the BASIC code. I just gave myself a limitless number of lives in the game, so I could continue playing it forever. This was also my first introduction to algebra, and I didn't even know it at the time. This was a decisive moment in my life. I was quite excited because of what I was learning and what I was able to do. As a result, I was enthusiastic for the rest of my life about self-learning and computers, and I was quite happy doing them too.I've noticed that people who are truly content with life are enthusiastic about what they do. This enthusiasm, along with good health, is the key to being happy. It also leads to self-confidence and content in life too. It may also lead to success, wealth and achievements.Success, wealth or achievements can also bring some people happiness, yet I know plenty of rich people who are unhappy. I know many people with successful businesses that are not happy with what they are doing. I know people who continuously buy themselves new toys, such as cars, computers, and televisions, yet never seem content for too long. 阅读理解“I love you” might be one of the mostimportant combinations in the Englishlanguage. It’s the signal that a romanticrelationship is serious,an indication ofcloseness for a sibling(兄弟姐妹),parent, orchild. But the way it’s used in China might be alittle different. The Global Times reports that two online videos showing children telling their parents “I love you” have gone viral (火了起来) in China. The first shows a number of college students telling their parents they love them. The responses are mixed.“Are you drunk?” asked one parent. In another similar video,a father responded even less politely—“I am going to a meeting,so cut_the_crap.”Even the positive reactions make it clear that the words are expressed rarely: “I am so happy you called to say that,it is the happiest thing that happened to me,” one parent answered. This isn’t the first time that China has done some soulsearching about familiar love—last year China Daily asked a crosssection of people if they said“I love you” to their parents, spouses(爱人),and children.“I have never said ‘I love you’to my family, and I don’t think I will in the future,”one 56yearold told the paper.“Saying it aloud is embarrassing for me.”Still, that doesn’t mean that love can’t be expressed. In a separate article,China Daily spoke to Zhao Mengmeng,a 31yearold woman who said she had never told her father she loved him face to face, she said,“I find it a bit odd.” Mrs.Zhao gave her father a photo album featuring photographs of them together on almost every one of her birthdays. The pictures went viral online, being forwarded hundreds of thousands of times on Weibo.“I didn’t sleep the night I heard about it,” her father told China Daily after the story attracted mainstream attention.“I have now memorized some of the comments on the collection of pictures.”1.What did the father want to express by using the underlined words?A.Make a long story short!B.Just shut up!C.Talk about it later!D.Forget about it!2.What can we learn from the two online videos?A.Chinese children hate saying the three words to their parents.B.Many Chinese parents respond strangely to the three words.C.The three words become more and more popular in China.D.Chinese people are rather slow in understanding others.3.What does the example of Zhao Mengmeng show?A.Microblog is the best way to express oneself.B.It is a fashion to express love on microblog.C.Love can be expressed in other ways.D.It is hard to express love in public.4.What does the passage mainly talk about?A.The words “I love you” are rarely used in China.B.Chinese people refuse to express their love to others.C.Chinese people use different ways to express their love.D.The words “I love you” result in misunderstanding in China.【语篇解读】“I love you”恐怕是英语中最重要的单词组合之一。

注意在选项中查找表示结果、结论、总结等的信号词,如therefore,as a result,thus,hence,in short,to sum up,to conclude,in a word等词语。

going well. 22 Reassure yourself that everything is good—even if you don’t feel it.“ 23 If you’re stuck in traffic, then everything else must be going horribly, too,” says Anne Parker,a wellness counselor.By blowing negative events out of proportion, you’re setting yourself up for feeling down all day.Instead, acknowledge that you’re stuck in t raffic, but also bring to mind something good, like the beautiful scenery outside the window. That way, you’ll get in the habit of forbidding negative circumstances from blanketing your whole day.Swearing to lose 20 pounds or to run a marathon seems like goals leading to happiness, but they take time to achieve. 24 You may even end up admitting that you have been defeated. However,if you focus on the small milestones that occur along the way,you will feel positive about your progress, which will give you the strength to keep going.25 Try making someone else’s day better.A report by United Healthcare and Volunteer Match found that volunteers are 72% Great RoommateHaving a roommate can be one of the best experiences in college or,easily, one of the worst. 11 Follow these tips to avoid the common mistakes that turn good roommate relationships sour.◇Talk things out.Communication is key.If something happens, sit down with your roommate and have a facetoface conversation.I’ve seen roommate relationships fall apart because something happens and, instead of talking to each other, the two start complaining about their roommates behind their backs. 12◇Don’t expect to be best friends. Some roommates become the best of friends, and some don’t.Don’t put pressure on yourself or your roommate, especially when you first meet. 13 And if your roommate doesn’t end up being your best friend,d on’t worry.◇Ask before you take. This applies to food, clothes and anything else.If you want to keep a relationship going, show your roommate that you have respect for what is his or hers by asking first. 14◇Clean up after yourself. This should do witho ut saying.Don’t be lazy.Or,at least, don’t bury your roommate in your clothes and garbage. Most people I’ve come across in college are messy. 15 But being considerate with where you put your stuff
注意在选项中查找表示结果、结论、总结等的信号词,如therefore,as a result,thus,hence,in short,to sum up,to conclude,in a word等词语。

Great RoommateHaving a roommate can be one of the best experiences in college or,easily, one of the worst. 12◇Don’t expect to be best friend s.Some roommates become the best of friends, and some don’t.Don’t put pressure on yourself or your roommate, especially when you first meet. 13 And if your roommate doesn’t end up being your best friend, don’t worry.◇Ask before you take. This applies to food, clothes and anything else.If you want to keep a relationship going, show your roommate that you have respect for what is his or hers by asking first. 14◇Clean up after yourself. This should do without saying.Don’t be lazy.Or,at least, don’t bury you r roommate in your clothes and garbage. Most people I’ve come across in college are messy. 15 But being considerate with where you put your stuff will help you avoid。
