My Views on GroundlessBeliefs

14级英语3班黄嘉乐黄锦培黄晓清王永武陈修涛Surrounded by diverse opinions of issues and flooded with malicious rumors, we are prone to accepting the prevalent concept of groundless beliefs nowadays. To some extent, groundless beliefs may result in consistent thoughts, which will rob people of their creativity of minds. Meanwhile, these groundless beliefs always rest upon traditio n or somebody’s bare assertion.Hence, groundless beliefs are not beneficial for our further development.

For one thing, groundless beliefs are implanted with personal feelings and held through self-interest or sentimental associations. People will easily be influenced by their preference. Born in the early 1960s, my parentsdid not have much access to education, let alone English. In their days, the importance ofmathematics, physics and chemistrywere stressed. They believe that by masteringthese three subjects, everyone can go around the world freelywithout fear. So they neglected the significance of learning English, holding a thought that English is useless. Unfortunately, I was passed on the same belief. As a consequence, I did not pay much attention to learning English. When I grow up, I found the world is not the same as what it is in my parent s’time. China is much more closely connected with the world. English, as the international communicative language, serves as a useful tool for people from different countries to work, to collaborate and toimprove together. If you really want to experience the world, you must have a good command of English. In this case, my parents’thought towards English seems to be groundless, as they have no idea of

English and are not aware of the indispensable influence English will exert in the future life.

For another, groundless beliefs are much more likely to lead us to distortion of the truth and erosion of moral values. For example, there is a groundless belief of mine which I have kept thinking for years: those people who are well-dressed are always rich. This belief, came from my impression of the soap opera in my childhood, is that the richer the protagonist is, the more beautiful clothes were dressed. I didn’t think it was groundless and funny until I entered into middle school. It was from then that I began to question the authenticity of this belief because I noticed that some students in my class were well-dressed, but they were not very well-off. In fact, some of them are in serious straits. As I grow up, I realize that this belief is really ludicrous. Entertaining common ideas that people dislike making friends with a shabby man, they dressed well, for they want to show appropriate respect to others and make friends with other people in the hope of not being looked down upon. Thanks to the timely correction of this ridiculous groundless belief that we can judge a person whether he is rich or not from his dress, I would not be so superficial any more.

From above discussion, I can safely draw a conclusion that we must have our own beliefs and not drift with the current, especially those groundless beliefs. In order to fight against groundless beliefs, we are encouraged to discover the facts, to figure things outin a clear and rational way and to spare no effort to get at the truth.
